The concept of the gentleman amateur was, and remains, an important aspect of upper and middle-class Victorian and Edwardian male identity. Although he remains a significant literary presence, the form and length of time the gentleman amateur remained a cultural influence in society is contested.                                                     

This article examines one realm of this social constructs influence - sport - in terms of the social and philosophical origins of these titles, what they meant in practice and the repercussions their use had on class cultures, British (English) sporting values and success. It proposes that the gentleman amateur - despite the long-term damage inflicted by such men - remains a major philosophical, ideological and physical influence upon British sport today.

Background: Sport is covered with the messed up dreams of the individuals who faltered when they generally should have been in charge of themselves and to be centered around the job needing to be done.The the study's main objective was to find out the difference between the psychological, physiological, and various psychomotor variables of pace and spin bowlers.To the best of the knowledge, none of the studies has dealt with the psycho-physiological, psychomotor, and psychological variables of bowlers in cricket.Methods:In psychological variables, it was emotional expressivity & state and trait anxiety scale; in physiological variables, it was heart rate & skin conductance; in psychomotor variables, it was reaction test, sustained attention, time movement anticipation, & sensomotor coordination (Vienna Test System.) and the bowling performance. Results:The studies results show that there was a significant difference in the three physiological variables of skin conductance, bowling performance, and heart rate; and the scores showed an upward trend for both the fast bowlers and spinners while facing three different kinds of batsmen(attacking, balance and defensive based on strike rate) while it was found that the mean scores of spinners were higher than pacers while facing attacking batsmen and balanced batsmen. In the psychomotor variables, only the Mean Motor Time was found to have significant difference and the spin bowlers had a higher mean than the pace bowlers. While there was no significant difference between the psychological variables of state and trait anxiety and Berkley's expressivity.Conclusion:This study may help coaches and trainees to train bowlers in the mental aspect as per the challenges of the game. When subjected to the simulated experimental protocol of super over, the spin bowlers compared to pace bowlers demonstrated more arousal while facing attacking batsmen followed by balanced and then defensive batsmen.

Racial inequalities in sport resulting from apartheid in South Africa are well documented, and they are evident in the participation (or non-participation) levels in the various sports. More than a quarter of a century after the end of apartheid, inequality still exists to some extent in sports such as rugby and cricket where historically, people of colour were excluded from participation at any representative level. However, there has been comparatively limited work conducted in recent years on the place and role of sport in post-apartheid South Africa. This systematic review examines articles published on the history of sport in South Africa since 1994 and the transformation process required for inclusivity. This forms the criterion for the inclusion and exclusion of articles. The bulk of the literature was been retrieved from searches on Google Scholar and SCOPUS' databases, and complemented with comprehensive sports-related documentary reviews. This review is focused on professional sport in South Africa, with a particular focus on the three most popular ones, i.e. soccer (football), rugby and cricket. The main aim of transformation in sport has been to develop a unified and successful nation that competes internationally with teams that are accepted by the whole nation and representative of the demographics of South Africa. Sport (rugby and cricket in particular) needs to implement tangible solutions in response to the transformation trajectory, not because government imposes quotas on teams or threatens to ban a federation from international competition, but rather because transformed sport, both on and off the field, will make the 'rainbow nation' a force to be reckoned with in the international sporting fraternity.

Using 2008-2009 data, we identify winning input combinations for the game of cricket in two different formats: 50-over one-day internationals and 20-over games from Twenty20 internationals and the Indian Premier League. We find that attacking batting and bowling are the best determinants of the winning probability in both formats in an international setting despite their 30-over difference. Interestingly, attacking batting and defensive bowling are the optimal input combinations in the league version of the 20-over format. Finally, we speculate about their implications for the future of cricket, especially for the popularity of formats, choices of players, and player development.

Cricket is now a game of enchantment, refreshing and physical strength of 22 players. As the popularity of one-day international (ODI) games increases, it is essential to understand the game results' potential predictors. The advantage at home ground, coin-toss result, decision on first batting or fielding first, and day-today games are such popular cricket literature variables. The Indian subcontinent is like a game of thrill, war, friendship, and finally, and the best fighting teams are India and Pakistan. This study emphases a comprehensive analysis of the importance of these important predictors by various statistical calculations. For all ODI matches played by India & Pakistan from 1978 to 2019, information was manually collected from the website, www.espncricinfo.com. For purposes of model-building, logistic regression is applied retrospectively to data already obtained from previously played matches. Univariate, bivariate, binary and skewed logistic regression on the multivariate context are considered. In bivariate analysis, only the day/day-night format match is statistically significant at a 5% level of significance in favor of winning the Indian team. In binary logistic regression, the odds of winning team India was 70.6% times more for home ground and 2.28 times more for data compared to day-night times match. For skewed logistic, the odds of conquering for both teams increase, but the model performs comparatively worse than binary logistic regression.

The current study uses an econometric model called GARCH methodology for analyzing the One day international match effect and least square method for T20 international match effect. Results shows that the win or loss of ODI matches have impact on the BSE on the next day after the match is played and it also found that the win effect of T20 match has more effect on the BSE on the day of the match played. Likely the T20 matches played outside India has more impact on BSE on the day of the match whereas the ODI matches played in India has effect on BSE after the day of the match.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the acute effects of suryanamaskar and dynamic stretching on the motor performances of Club Level Cricket Players. Thirty players competing in the Club level Leagues took part in the study. The training protocols consisted of 10 mins suryanamaskar and Dynamic Stretching protocol was a series of specific progressive exercises lasting a total of 10 minutes over a distance of 20m with a jog recovery (Young, 2007). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of corrective exercise programmes on the foot condition. The research was attended by 66 subjects (students of the Jovan Cvijić elementary school, Banja Luka) aged 11-12 years. Of the total number of subjects on initial testing, 44 subjects (72.7%) had flat foot deformity (first, second and third degree) and they participated in further research. The Footplate currex platform was used to assess the arch of the foot. The programme of flat foot corrective exercises lasted a total of 4 months. Exercises were performed twice a week for 20 minutes. The programme included a total of 13 exercises and each exercise was repeated 20 times. The purpose of this study was to investigate Pakistani fans in the context of athlete branding regarding foreign cricketers in the country's first ever cricket league. Athlete brand attributes and athlete brand implication discussed with 15 fans of foreign cricketers via semi-structured interview. The components of athlete brand are related with on-field attributes (behavior, team, achievements, style of play and skills) and off-field attributes (physical attraction, lifestyle, personal appeal, ethnicity and entertainment). In turn, implication of athlete branding contributed in the domain of athlete loyalty (media following, creating their own narratives, positive word-of-mouth, resistance to change and commitment), athlete's team loyalty (team substitution, supporting multiple teams and revenue generation) and athlete's sponsors loyalty. The implications of these findings for building and managing an athlete's brand are also discussed.

The Indian Premier League - IPL launched in 2008 has achieved a very high level of popularity with more than 140 million TV audiences and a brand valuation of more than 4 billion USD. The high publicity and glamour filled, franchisee owned cricketing event has also seen unprecedented money paid as franchisee fees, players fees and through advertisement revenue along with scandals of match fixing. The business model needs appreciation for integrating a number of complex processes such as entertainment, glamour, marketing, pricing and hard-hitting cricket. However, the recent couple of seasons indicate a decreasing trend in TV Ratings, reduced audience, fall in advertising rates and a withdrawal of franchises. This paper conducts a detailed analysis of the IPL case and examines 10 key issues that threaten the viability of the IPL strategy, the revenue model and if the event can sustain itself. The results indicate that the very high cost burden for franchisee owners means that they undergo losses making their ventures unprofitable. Thus, there is a danger that the event would be forced to shut down or forced to radically alter its avatar. The paper provides some strategic recommendations to overcome these issues and ensure that rational cost structures and expenditures are implemented to make the event viable.

During 2021, long-standing concerns about racism in English cricket rose to the surface to become very public, political questions. For the purposes of clarity, this article begins by drawing a distinction between racism on the one hand and 'racial thinking' on the other. It suggests that racial thinking is related to, but analytically distinct from, and in fact prior to racism. It then goes on to develop a wider analysis of the historical connections between cricket, Englishness and racial thinking. With this in mind, the final section of the article draws on the preceding historical analysis to explore some of the more recent examples of racial thinking in cricket, and their implications for how we might approach the problem of racism in English cricket today.

The main aim of this study was to evaluating the various relationships of the identified biomechanical variables towards the performance of spin bowling and evaluating the contribution of identified biomechanical variables and construction of predictive model. Five interuniversity level leg-spin bowlers were recruited from LNIPE, India, and their bowling actions were captured by three video cameras, in a field setting. A value of α = 0.05 was used for all tests as the criterion to determine the presence or absence of significance. The total viewership of IPL has reached to 462 million in the 2019 season.To investigate the impact of Indian Premier League (IPL) on Test Cricket in India. Methods: This article is an attempt to find out any influence of IPL on Test cricket, popularity, and the importance of both the formats of the game using a questionnaire for the collection of data. Conclusion:The results indicated that the high induction of money and involvement of glamour in IPL has adversely affected the popularity of Test cricket and skills execution in the game. Also, there is a need to form adequate policies for the sustainable development of Test cricket and its declining popularity.

Anthropometric characteristics and somatotype profile give information about basic foundations of an individual concerning the tools of motor ability. Cricket is most popular sports in India yet very few studies have been caried out on specific anthropometric characteristics of the cricketers. Hence, the present study was carried out to explore the specific anthropometric and somatotype characteristics of the cricket players according to their areas of specialization. A total 60 male cricketers with the mean age of 17.58±2.09 yrs were classified into three categories and total 13 Anthropometric components including somatotype profile have been evaluated. Bowlers have greater height, greater arm span for beneficial at time of bowling delivery. The somatotype characteristics of the batsmen are 2.8-3.9-3.3, followed by bowlers (2.8-3.8-3.4) and all-rounders (2.9-3.8-3.5). Overall, these somatotype characteristics of the cricketers possess a meso-ectomorphic physique (2.8-3.8-3.4). The present study highlights that the district level cricketers of West Bengal possess mesomorph physique followed by ectomorph.

Objective: To establish if consistent concepts exist amongst sports medicine professionals working within elite cricket when developing a multi-disciplinary performance team.   
Design: An exploratory research design was adopted and the findings were coded using a thematic analysis approach. 
Method: 6 semi structured interviews were conducted: England and Wales Cricket Board (n=3) Board of Control for Cricket in India (n=3). Each board comprised of Head of Physiotherapy, Head of Strength and Conditioning Coach and Head Coach. Data sets were analysed utilising thematic analysis.
Results: Thematic analysis generated 226 codes, 9 sub-themes and 3 main overarching themes. Each theme was defined. The main themes were: ‘communication’, ‘performance parameter’ and ‘structure and
governance’.
Conclusion: Communication is key to collaborative work within a multidisciplinary team.  However, several other factors must be considered when developing an MDT, which include innovation and strong structural, philosophical, strategical and governance policies to enhance team performance.

Sport is an integral part of both Australian culture and identity. However, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities (LGBT+) face extra barriers and challenges to engagement and participation in sport. This study, formed through a partnership between Western Sydney University and Cricket Victoria, aimed to better understand how LGBT+ supporter/ coterie groups could be initiated and supported in the Big Bash League. Twenty-Four key stakeholders and informants drawn from Australian Football League (AFL) LGBT+ supporter groups, AFL administrators, cricket administrators, and LGBT+ cricket fans were interviewed to collect comprehensive data on the requirements for successful LGBT+ supporter group formation in cricket and the Big Bash League. Our results reveal a strong desire to include more LGBT+ communities in cricket, with the Big Bash League identified as an ideal opportunity due to its family-oriented nature. However, it was felt by participants that there was a lack of understanding and education of LGBT+-related issues within the cricket community. The experiences of those involved in AFL support groups have been overwhelmingly positive and provide a compelling case for the introduction of LGBT+ supporter groups in cricket, from both a social inclusion and financial management perspective. We conclude that the introduction of LGBT+ supporter groups in cricket has the potential to impact positively the lives of LGBT+ communities, providing a platform for them to engage with sport in a meaningful and positive way. Three key messages were identified for those wishing to set up LGBT+ supporter groups: 1. Groups should be developed from the bottom up, being driven by LGBT+ fans and members rather than purely from the organisation. A partnership approach between Cricket Victoria/Big Bash League clubs and local LGBT+ communities also provides an avenue to facilitate training and education on LGBT+-related issues for staff and players. 2. Institutional support is crucial for such an initiative to succeed; 3. Clear policies are needed to support supporter groups and to address any negative responses. This policy should also address behaviour by players and staff to ensure that the institutional commitment to inclusion is not undermined.

Cricket is the most popular sport in south Asian countries and the second most popular sport globally. And T20 cricket is the most attractive version of this game. Businesses have grown enormously based on cricketing sports events from the last decade. A large number of research have been done to predict the winner of cricket matches or to analyze game statistics. These studies are helping investors and franchisees to decide on which team they can invest in to gain more profit. Also, coaches, sports analysts, and technicians get game facts and ideas about other teams, which help them make decisions and change plans accordingly. In this study, we have shown a comparative analysis of different non-ensemble and ensemble machine learning classifiers. We have collected data of all seasons of the Bangladesh Premier League(BPL) T20 tournament. We have prepared two datasets: one contains only pre-match information, and the second includes post-match information. We have applied five base classifiers and five ensemble classifiers for the analysis. We found that K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN) performed best compared to other algorithms while predicting match results before starting the game. The Gradient Boosting classifier seemed more robust than the different classifiers for predicting match outcomes considering all features.

The introduction of the shorter match formats in cricket (i.e. Twenty20 cricket) has led to a greater emphasis placed upon the successful performance of a quick single in match play. Therefore, the study aim was to investigate the kinematic variables between batsmen and fast bowlers when completing a quick single. Eighteen male cricketers completed 17.68-meter (m) sprints utilizing a match-specific start (walking start, bat dragged through crease and leg guards worn). Timing gates recorded 0-5 and 0-17.68 m time. Joint and step kinematics were analyzed through the first and second steps via motion analysis. Participants were split into batsmen and fast bowler groups based on their primary role within a team. A one-way analysis of variance determined significant (p< 0.05) differences between the batsmen and fast bowler groups. Effect sizes (Cohen's d) were also calculated. Selected between-group kinematic differences were found. Fast bowlers had a significantly greater non-dominant elbow flexion, and second step swing leg ankle dorsi flexion. The requirements of fast bowling may have resulted in a cross-training effect, as increased range of motion in the bowling arm, and increased dorsi flexion on front and back foot landing, is associated with fast bowling technique. Nevertheless, there were no differences between the groups regarding quick single sprint performance. All cricket players should be proficient in the mechanisms of quick single sprint acceleration, regardless of their primary role in the team.

This article briefs about the factors that cricket game depends on and discusses various researches which predicted the winning of a team with an advent of statistical modeling in sports. With this article, we embark on predicting the outcome of Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match using a supervised learning approach from a team composition perspective. Our work suggests that the relative team strength between the competing teams forms a distinctive feature for predicting the winner. Modeling the team strength boils down to modeling individual player‘s batting and bowling performances, forming the basis of our approach. We use statistics and recent performance of a player to model him. Player independent factors have also been considered in order to predict the outcome of a match. Machine learning is used in predicting the outcome of a cricket match before and during a match.

Cricket is one of the most popular games worldwide. The aim of this paper is to predict bowlers' performance from publicly available data. Team management follows different strategies to win in the tournaments. They anticipate bowlers' performance of the opposite team in diverse conditions and prepare their batsmen accordingly. Similarly, they also foresee the strength and weakness of opponent teams' batsmen and suggest their bowlers to perform different tricks in various environments. In this paper, we build a machine learning based approach to predict bowler's performance in varying conditions by using 6,031 bowling instances of One day International (ODI) matches. Hence, the success or failure of any team lies in the skills and abilities of the players that comprise the team.This paper proposed a new tool based on Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to evaluate the performance of a cricket player. FIS is a process to formulate the mapping from given input to an output using fuzzy logic. Various new parameters are used in this tool which can make affect on the performances of players and can improve the quality of performance evaluation in cricket. This tool will be useful to make the ranking of players and for the selection of players based on performances.

The Aboriginal cricket team of 1868 was the first tour of an Australian cricket team to England.  They were seen, not just as cricketers, but as a curious example of colonised indigenous people of the British empire who had been “civilised” by adopting the game of cricket.  The tour was moderately successful, but the team’s legacy did not pave the way for other Aboriginal people to forge successful careers in what was to remain essentially a white man’s game.  Players who followed them, such as Gilbert, Henry, and Marsh, were unable to break through the racism and discrimination they faced at the hands of white umpires and selectors.  It was not until the 1990s when Jason Gillespie was selected to play for Australia, leading to discussion about race and conservatism within the game.  It has only been during the last few decades that organisations such as Cricket Australia have sought to address the issue of why indigenous people don’t play cricket and what can be done about it.
