The placement of virtual machines is a permanent routine that determines both performance and energy efficiency within Datacenters. Unfortunately, it is a task whose complexity is fully supported by the common sense of the system administrators who must try different scenarios in order to detect the one that best satisfies the constraints imposed by the environment. Bin packing techniques have been used to address similar issues in other areas such as transportation and mass distribution. We try to apply these methods to the problem of placing virtual machines on the physical servers within Datacenters. Our aim is to evaluate the efficiency of this technique at the optimum distribution of the VM while using the minimum number of physical machines and consequently reduce the amount of energy required for their power supply. The results obtained in comparison with the so called brute force method makes it possible to conclude that the Bin packing techniques could help possible to rationalize the use of the physical resources allocated to the operation of the applications in the Datacenters while preserving the SLA imposed by the clients

Servers and other IT devices inside datacenters have hardware component and other software or virtual component. Some programs are required to create and secure everything related to the virtual environment on IT devices. These programs can be free or require a prepaid license to be accessed .Most of the proposed datacenter total cost of ownership (TCO) models focus only on calculating the costs of the hardware component of IT devices and they ignore the costs of the other virtual component.In this paper, we present a cost model for building a datacenter and provide through it an analysis way to calculate the IT software license cost. Our model helps in solving a real problem in faculty of computers and information which plans to establish a datacenter. Our model can help the faculty administrators to know how much money they need to buy the IT devices and how much IT software license cost. We also calculate the cost of the power distribution equipment(PDU) and the uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems which are required for operating the IT devices. The cost of the cooling systems that take the heat away once the power is consumed from IT devices, PDU devices and UPS systems is also calculated in our model.

—Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently. Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve datacenter network performance. In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties, general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing, multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper, we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently and pose interesting and novel research problems. To measure the performance of datacenter networks, different performance metrics have been used such as flow completion times, deadline miss rate, throughput and fairness. Depending on the application and user requirements, some metrics may need more attention. While investigating different traffic control techniques, we point out the trade-offs involved in terms of costs, complexity and performance. We find that a combination of different traffic control techniques may be necessary at particular entities and layers in the network to improve the variety of performance metrics. We also find that despite significant research efforts, there are still open problems that demand further attention from the research community.

This paper discusses the design of a modern Enterprise-grade Software-defined datacenter network (DCN). The work begins with the identification of the high level and domain-specific requirements and constraints of modern DCNs, then introduces some design principles and technical solutions (mainly, network virtualization, software-defined networking, network function virtualization and network function chaining) to overcome the constraints and to implement the requirements presented earlier. Then, a distributed service delivery model for the Enterprise DCN and three high-level designs (HLDs) using different platforms are introduced and compared to each other and to a theoretical model, and against a well-known Datacenter Market report. The last chapter, using some guidelines, best practices and lessons learned by the early adopters of SDN (Facebook, Google, and Microsoft), briefly presents a possible design for a future Software-Defined Enterprise Global network able to face the challenges posed to a worldwide Enterprise company.

—Large inter-datacenter transfers are crucial for cloud service efficiency and are increasingly used by organizations that have dedicated wide area networks between datacen-ters. A recent work uses multicast forwarding trees to reduce the bandwidth needs and improve completion times of point-to-multipoint transfers. Using a single forwarding tree per transfer, however, leads to poor performance because the slowest receiver dictates the completion time for all receivers. Using multiple forwarding trees per transfer alleviates this concern–the average receiver could finish early; however, if done naively, bandwidth usage would also increase and it is apriori unclear how best to partition receivers, how to construct the multiple trees and how to determine the rate and schedule of flows on these trees. This paper presents QuickCast, a first solution to these problems. Using simulations on real-world network topologies, we see that QuickCast can speed up the average receiver's completion time by as much as 10× while only using 1.04× more bandwidth; further, the completion time for all receivers also improves by as much as 1.6× faster at high loads.

This paper presents a solution to respond to the increasing management needs of complex networks and applications in datacenters. It presents a way to describe QoS needs at both application and hardware platform levels within an autonomous management tool called TUNe. High level graphical languages are introduced to describe autonomous management policies. The provided extension allows dynamic reconfiguration of both application QoS profiles and network hardware QoS classes depending on the global environment state. Experiments are being conducted with a P2P system called Azureus on a set of Cisco 7600 routers.
