This paper aims to illustrate the preliminary results of a research project on the dome of Pisa Cathedral (Italy). The final objective of the present research is to achieve a deep understanding of the structural behaviour of the dome, through a detailed knowledge of its geometry and constituent materials, and by taking into account historical and architectural aspects as well. A reliable survey of the dome is the essential starting point for any further investigation and adequate structural modelling. Examination of the status quo on the surveys of the Cathedral dome shows that a detailed survey suitable for structural analysis is in fact lacking. For this reason, high-density and high-precision surveys have been planned, by considering that a different survey output is needed, according both to the type of structural model chosen and purposes to be achieved. Thus, both range-based (laser scanning) and image-based (3D Photogrammetry) survey methodologies have been used. This contribution introduces the first results concerning the shape of the dome derived from surveys. Furthermore, a comparison is made between such survey outputs and those available in the literature.

Mimari bir üst örtü biçimi olarak kubbe tarih öncesi dönemden itibaren kullanılmaktadır. Günümüze kadar, farklı coğrafyalarda farklı kültürlerin etkisi ile gelişerek gelmiştir. Kubbenin izlediği gelişim süreci içerisinde İslamiyet’in doğuşu ile birlikte ortaya çıkan cami mimarlığı önemli bir etkiye sahiptir. Aynı şekilde cami mimarisinin günümüze kadar geçirdiği gelişmelerde kubbeli yapı tipinin etkisi büyüktür. Gerek yapısal özellikleri, gerekse simgesel özellikleri ile kubbe elemanı diğer mimari kültürlerde olduğu gibi İslam mimarisinde de güçlü bir etkiye sahip olmuştur. Günümüzdeki teknolojik gelişmeler ile kubbe, yapısal gereklilikler anlamında eski önemini korumuyor olsa da, bu güne kadar sahip olduğu simgesel özellikleri açısından günümüzdeki önemini sürdürmektedir. Türkiye’de cami mimarisine yönelik toplumsal kabuller bu durumun en somut göstergesidir. Bu sebeple, çağımızda yapılan cami örneklerinin büyük çoğunluğunda, klasik Osmanlı dönemi camilerine öykünme çabası gözlemlenmektedir. Diğer yandan, günümüzde cami inşa süreçleri kapsamlı bir denetimden geçmemekte, yapılan camiler, caminin potansiyel kullanıcılarının beğenileri ve inşaatı yapan usta ve kalfaların bilgi ve becerileri doğrultusunda şekillenmektedir. Bu sebeple, günümüzde yapılan camilerin çoğu, öykünme çabası içinde oldukları klasik camilerin bağlam ile ilişki, kütlesel denge, oran ve iç mekan kalitesi gibi mimari niteliklerini yakalayamamaktadır. Bununla birlikte, cami mimarisine yönelik toplumsal kabuller, bu konuda çağdaş arayışlara gidilmesini ve yeni denemelerin yapılmasını kısıtlamaktadır. Bu anlamda cami mimarisi konusunda mimarlara verilen yetki ve sorumluluklar uygulama pratiğinde devre dışı kalmaktadır. Türkiye’deki mimarlık eğitiminin içeriğine göz atıldığı zaman, mimarlık öğrencilerinin belli bir oranda İslam mimarisi, ibadet mekânları, algı ve biçimsel kavrayış konularında eğitim aldıkları gözlemlenmektedir. Bu durum, mimarlık eğitimi alanların, konuyu toplum genelinde yer alan cami mimarisine yönelik kalıplaşmış fikirlerden sıyrılarak algılayacağı düşüncesini doğurmaktadır. Bu yaklaşım ile, bu tezde çağdaş cami mimarisinde kubbe ögesinin algısal etkisinin mimari eğitim seviyesine göre farklılaşmasının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Çalışma kapsamında çağdaş cami mimarisine yönelik algı araştırması yapılmış ve alan çalışmasındaki algısal inceleme kubbe ögesi ile sınırlı tutulmuştur. Yöntem olarak anket tekniği kullanılmıştır. Farklı işlevlere sahip yapılardan üst örtü elemanları seçilmiş ve bu elemanlar fonksiyon, biçim ve üslup ilişkilerinin çeşitli varyasyonları ile altı gruba ayrılmıştır. Seçilen örneklerden faydalanılarak, katılımcıların algılama biçimlerini ölçmeye yönelik soruların olduğu anket formu oluşturulmuştur. Mimarlık eğitimine yeni başlamış ve eğitimlerini tamamlamak üzere olan iki farklı öğrenci grubu ile anket uygulaması yapılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda mimari eğitim seviyesine göre kubbenin algısal etkisinin farklılaşma biçimi incelenmiştir.
Çalışma sonucunda, katılımcıların cami mimarisi konusundaki üslup tercihlerinin ve bir caminin sahip olması gereken özellikleri konusundaki fikirlerinin, mimari eğitim seviyesine göre farklılaştığı tespit edilmiştir. Katılımcılar farklı işlevlere sahip yapılardaki kubbelerin biçimsel olarak ayrışmaları konusunda belli oranlarda farkındalık göstermişlerdir. Söz konusu farkındalığın mimari eğitim seviyesine paralel olarak arttığı gözlemlenmiştir. Bahsi geçen orijinal bulgular doğrultusunda, mimari eğitim seviyesi arttıkça çağdaş cami mimarisinde kolektif imgenin baskın rolünün azaldığı tezi ileri sürülmüştür.

The dome, as an architectural roofing system, has been used since the prehistoric time. It has reached today after a process of development under the influence of different cultures in different geographies. During the development process of the dome, the mosque architecture, which has come up with the birth of Islam, had a significant effect and vice versa. The domed structure types had a crucial influence on mosque architecture development stages. Consequently, the dome with its structural and symbolic features became a crucial element in the Islamic architecture as well as the other architectural cultures. Even if the dome has lost its structural importance by the development of building technology, it still maintains its importance today due to, its symbolic features. The current public acceptance of the mosque architecture in Turkey is the most concrete indication of this situation. It is noticeable that, the majority of the mosques, built in this era, have a tendency to emulate the classical Ottoman mosques. Moreover, the mosque construction process does not go through a comprehensive inspection, rather the mosques are shaped according to the appreciation perceptions of the user group and the knowledge and the skills of the foremen. Therefore, the majority of the mosques today cannot reach a successful architectural quality comparing to the imitated classical mosques in terms of the relationship with the context, the balances of the masses, the proportions and quality of the interior space. In addition, the public acceptances of the mosque architecture, restricts the contemporary quests of trying new experiments. In this sense, the authority and responsibility that should be given to the architects in mosque architecture, became out of order in practice . When the content of architectural education in Turkey has been analyzed, it was observed that the students of architecture are adequately educated in the fields of the Islamic architecture, places of worship, perception and formal understanding. This situation makes think that, the people with an architecture education, will be freed of the stereotyped ideas of the mosque architecture. With this approach, this thesis aims to examine the differentiation of perceptual effect of the dome in contemporary architecture according to architectural education level.
In the content of the study, perception research towards contemporary mosque architecture has done, perceptual analysis of field study is limited to the dome item. Survey technique were used as the method of the study. Roofing systems were selected from different functions and divided into six groups representing the variations of function, form and stylistic relations. Using the selected samples, questionnaires were prepared to measure the forms of perceptions of participants. A survey was conducted with two different groups; the first was the students who have just started their architectural education and the second was those who are about to complete their education. Through analyzing their responses, the differentiation of the perceptual effect of dome has been examined.
As a results of the study, it has been found that, the comprehension and the style preferences of the mosque architecture are effected by the architectural education level. It has been also observed that the architectural education level affects the awareness of the participants in terms of the formal decompositions of domes used in several buildings of different functions. In other words, it has been clarified that as the level of the architectural education increases, the dominant role of collective imagination of the dome decreases in contemporary mosque architecture.

Kadim bir geçmişi olan çarkıfelek (fırıldak) sembolü dünyanın ve evrenin devinimini, kaderi, sonsuzluğu ve ölümsüzlüğü simgelemektedir. El sanatları ve mimari plastik süslemelerde görülen çarkıfelek motifi, kubbelerde de kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışmada Türk-İslam yapılarında karşımıza çıkan çarkıfelek süslemeli kubbeler ele alınmıştır. Çeşitli coğrafyalarda bulunan otuz dokuz adet çarkıfelek süslemeli kubbe, sanat tarihi açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bizim saptayamadığımız veya günümüze gelememiş örneklerin olabileceği düşünülürse bu sayının daha da fazla olduğu belirtilebilir. Örneklerden on yedisi İran’da, ikisi Mısır’da, biri Özbekistan’da, biri Bulgaristan’da geriye kalan kısmı ise Türkiye sınırları içerisinde yer almaktadır. Bunlardan en erken tarihlisi 11-12. yüzyıla kadar gitmektedir. Tespit ettiğimiz ilk örnek İran coğrafyasında yer almaktadır. Çarkıfelek süslemeli kubbe Türklerle birlikte Mısır, Türkiye ve Balkan coğrafyasına taşınmıştır. Konu kapsamındaki çarkıfelek süslemeli kubbeler, yazılı ve görsel kaynaklar taranarak tespit edilmiş ve belirlenen örneklerin çizimleri fotoğraflar üzerinden yapılmıştır. Çarkıfelek formlu kubbeler kronolojik olarak katalog halinde tanıtılmıştır. Çarkıfelek sembolünün mekanı örten yarım küre biçimli üst örtülerde kullanılmasının ikonografik anlamları irdelenmiştir. Türk-İslam sanatı içerisindeki yeri ve önemi üzerinde durularak genel bir değerlendirilmeye gidilmiştir. Çarkıfelek süslemeli kubbelerin başka mimarilerde görülen örneklerine değinilmiş, sadece geçmişteki yapılarda değil yakın dönemdeki yapılarda da kullanıldığı saptanmıştır.

Las tradicionales estructuras nervadas a compresión habían permitido levantar, sobre pilares y arcos torales, soluciones de carácter turricular como los cimborrios, que, además de proporcionar luz natural sobre las encrucijadas de los transeptos de los templos, adoptaron, en algunos casos, perfiles escalonados de muy difícil resolución desde el punto de vista constructivo. Sin embargo, estas estructuras no pudieron emplearse para la materialización de las nuevas tipologías arquitectónicas que trataron de introducirse en el contexto artístico aragonés de mediados del Quinientos, como la cúpula sobre pechinas y tambor, en esencia, porque generaban unos estados tensionales en las fábricas que podían tornarlas inseguras.
No obstante, al margen de otras vías, las cúpulas terminarán resolviéndose desde una tradición constructiva local habituada al empleo del ladrillo, la madera y el yeso, pero, sobre todo, gracias a un nuevo sistema constructivo que contemplaba la incorporación de elementos de madera en el seno de las propias fábricas.

The traditional ribbed structures had allowed to build, on pillars and chancel archs, tower-shaped solutions such as the cimborrios –lantern towers–, which provided natural light over the crossing and, in some cases, adopted stepped profiles that were very difficult to perform in building terms.
However, these structures couldn’t be used to perform the new architectonical typologies coming from Italy in the Aragonese artistic context of the middle of the 16th century, such as the dome on pendentives and drum, essentially because they generated such tensions in the constructions that could make them unsafe.
In any case, besides some other solutions, the domes were finally executed starting from the local construction tradition in brick, wood and plaster but, above all, thanks to a new construction system which included wooden elements in the constructions themselves.

Mt. Merapi, Indonesia, is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the Torrid Zone. This volcano has erupted frequently and has produced pyroclastic flows following the collapse of the summit lava dome. We used Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data acquired by JERS-1 and RADARSAT-1 satellites from April 1996 to July 2006 to clarify the distribution patterns of the pyroclastic flow deposits. The extent of the deposits, termed P-zones, was accurately extracted by ratio operation and low-level feature extraction from SAR intensity images. These images highlighted temporal changes of the distribution area, perimeter, flow distance, included angle, and collapse direction. To validate the image-processing results, reflectance spectra of the rock samples collected after the eruption in June 2006 were measured in a laboratory. The reflectance spectra of all samples showed similar characteristics to the reference spectra, which were derived from atmospheric correction of Hyperion sensor image data covering the lava dome at the summit. Therefore, P-zones were confirmed to be the pyroclastic flow deposits originating from destruction of the lava dome at the summit. The image-processing results clarified that the extent of the distribution areas, perimeter, flow distances, and included angle of the P-zones were variable among the eruptions, while the collapse direction had a constant pattern. The collapse pattern followed a clockwise change from the south toward the west. By comparing the ratio maps of Bouguer gravity anomaly data in two periods, the change was interpreted to originate from the inclination of the conduit and the formation of shallow and deep magma reservoirs.

Návrhy konstrukcí vznikali v zájmu investora, s kterým byli obě varianty konzultovány a mají sloužit jako ideový návrh pro budoucí projekční činnost. Varianty se liší druhem použitého materiálu a geometrií nosné konstrukce.This bachelor thesis is dedicated to designing of two different versions of the construction for a spherical house. The design was developed upon an interest of the investor, with whom were both versions also consulted and is supposed to lead to an actual project and realization. The two versions will differ in usage of building materials and the construction geometry.

This paper presents a comparison study between the simulations of SkyVision and measurements made in a scale model. SkyVision is a computer tool to calculate the overall optical characteristics, indoor daylight availability and energy saving potential of projecting and tubular skylights. The measurements included the overall visible transmittance and indoor daylight illuminance of the skylight. A rectangular wooden box was used as a scale model of a simple commercial building. The top surface of the box was fitted with a curbed opening to accommodate the skylights to be tested. Seven skylight shapes were tested: two circular dome models, one with clear and one with white acrylic glazing; two rectangular bubble dome models, one with clear and one with white acrylic glazing; a clear acrylic hexagonal pyramid model; a clear polycarbonate barrel vault model; and a tubular skylight model. Geniş açıklıklı yapı ihtiyacına yönelik tasarım anlayışının, 20. yy’ın başlarından itibaren  kendini gösterdiği söylenebilir. Bu anlayışta, malzeme, biçim ve taşıyıcı sistem bir bütün halinde değerlendirilir ve tasarıma katılır. 20.yy’ın ikinci yarısından itibaren gelişen lamine ahşap kompozit eleman (glulam) üretim teknolojileri, geniş açıklıklı ahşap yapı tasarımını mümkün kılmıştır. Bu çalışmada çubuk ağı kabuk sistemler genelinde; önemli bir uygulama alanı bulan tek tabakalı ahşap kubbeler incelenmektedir. Malzeme, form ve taşıyıcı sistemin verimliliği, bilinen en geniş açıklıklı ahşap kubbe örnekleri üzerinden karşılaştırmalı olarak irdelenmektedir. Kubbe maliyetine etki eden parametrelerden biri taşıyıcı sistemin tipi ve basıklığıdır, jeodezik sistem ekonomikliği ile tercih edilmektedir. Birleşimlerin teşkil biçimi ve yükleri taşıma kapasitesinin yanısıra; kubbe yüklerinin zemine aktarılma biçimi de önemlidir. İncelenen örneklerden, yüklerin payandadan çekme çemberine aktarım biçiminin en uygun çözüm olduğu görülmektedir.
It can be said that the concept of design for the needs of the wide-span structure has emerged from the beginning of the 20th century. In this approach, the material, form and structural system are evaluated as a whole and are included in the design. Since the second half of the 20th century, the production of glue-laminated members (glulam) has made possible to design wide-span wooden structures. In this study, single-layer reticulated wooden domes which have an important position in the application area are addressed. The efficiency of the material, form, and structural system is investigated on the well-known largest-span timber domes. One of the parameters affecting the cost of the dome is the type and aspect ratio of the structural system, geodesic system is economically preferred. In addition to the load-carrying capacity of nodes and connections, transferring of the loads on domes to the ground is also important. The load transfer from buttresses to the tension ring seems the most appropriate solution.
