Dramatic Theory and Criticism

Ce travail s’intéresse à la poétique de la dissociation mise en œuvre par Helen Cooper dans sa pièce Three Women and a Piano Tuner (2004). Réunies pour mettre en commun leurs talents respectifs de compositrice, pianiste et productrice autour d’un projet de concert, les trois femmes de la pièce font émerger à la surface un trauma enfoui : en constant désaccord, Ella (figure de la mère), Liz (figure de l’amazone), et Beth (figure de la prostituée) matérialisent en réalité trois versions possibles du personnage unique mais intimement divisé d’Elisabeth, dont le fils possible est accordeur de piano. Dans cette pièce marquée par la prolifération du même – non pas idem, mais ipse – comme figure du clivage, où la métaphore musicale sert à évoquer le phénomène de dissonance cognitive, chacune incarne un mécanisme de défense spécifique en réaction à l’inceste subi à l’adolescence par la protagoniste. A la minimisation (Ella), au refoulement (Beth) et à l’exagération (Liz), s’articulent ainsi trois chemins de vie éventuels ou fantasmés mis en dialogue. Cette concurrence permet de dramatiser un conflit intérieur en quête de résolution, en mettant en scène les forces psychiques contradictoires, conscientes et inconscientes, qui animent ce personnage féminin, dont le choix ultime entre plusieurs options – garder l’enfant de l’inceste, le donner à adopter ou bien avorter – semble simultanément avoir déjà été fait et se reporter à l’infini. C’est autour de cette décision laissée hors du temps, qui se cristallise en creux sur la figure du fils reléguée en arrière-plan, dans l’espace du hors-scène, alors qu’il travaille sur l’instrument désaccordé, que s’élaborent les versions multiples du drame originel et d’un personnage féminin dissocié qui vise sa propre réconciliation. Redonnant symboliquement voix à un drame passé sous silence, le seul personnage masculin de la pièce illustre, par son travail, le patient processus de réparation du trauma, alors même que son existence à lui se révèle incertaine, terriblement « optionnelle ». Figure de hantise, l’accordeur de piano apparaît donc comme le maillon central qui à la fois œuvre à cette intime harmonie et l’empêche, invitant par ailleurs à réfléchir sur le processus d’écriture dramatique et le statut du personnage de théâtre, toujours en attente d’incarnation, jamais pleinement actualisé, suspendu entre la page et la scène. La métaphore musicale qui parcourt la pièce, depuis la présence en filigrane de l’accordeur jusqu’à la scène finale du concert, permet ainsi de travailler la figure du rhapsode conceptualisée par Jean-Pierre Sarrazac, qui traduit ici le travail de réintégration psychologique du Réel dans l’ordre Symbolique (Lacan). À la fin de la pièce, l’apparition de Harold, qui répète les gestes d’un père incestueux qu’il n’a pas connu, offre la vision d’un mimétisme impossible : cette coïncidence signifiante, ou « synchronicité » (Jung), évoque la dimension transgénérationnelle du trauma et laisse présager le retour du même. Elle renouvelle ainsi le sens du tragique sur la scène contemporaine en ouvrant l’espace du doute, des probabilités et du malaise. Dès lors, l’incertitude se donne comme la modalité ultime d’un réalisme traumatique de la scène qui, en interrogeant la vérité impossible du sujet, relocalise le drame de l’humain dans l’indéterminé, ce dont l’accordeur de piano, œuvrant dans l’ombre des dissonances, se fait l’image.

The theatrical design process is rooted in a deep and careful examination of a "text", be it traditional script or a devised process.  This paper examines the importance of a dramaturgical analysis of that text, one which allows for an immersion into the material, and it's relationship to the designer's process which requires a designer to dwell within that text and be "baptized" by the process.

There are three main East Asian approaches to interpreting Ophelia. The first is informed by the fascination with and reaction against the Victorian pictorialization of Ophelia, especially John Everett Millais’s famous Ophelia (1851), that emphasized, as Kimberly Rhodes describes, her “pathos, innocence, and beauty rather than the unseemly detail of her death.”  Despite having lived through negative experiences, Ophelia retains a childlike innocence in these rewritings. For example, New Hamlet by Lao She (penname of Shu Qingchun, 1899-1966) parodies China’s “Hamlet complex” (the inability to act at a time of national crisis) and the fascination with an Ophelia submerged in water. Both Ophelia and Millais’s painting are featured in two of Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki’s early twentieth-century novels. A second approach emphasizes the local context. Adapters used local values to engage with and even critique the Victorian narrative tradition of moralization. Late nineteenth-century translator Lin Shu (1852-1924), for example, tones down the sentimentalization of Ophelia in his classical Chinese rewriting of Charles and Mary Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare, showcasing the conflict between Victorian and Confucian moral codes. The third approach focuses upon an objectified and sexualized Ophelia. As other chapters in this volume demonstrate, this is not exclusively an Asian phenomenon. However, the eroticism associated with the Ophelia figure in a number of Asian stage and screen versions of Hamlet, such as Sherwood Hu’s film Prince of the Himalayas (2006), aligns Ophelia with East Asian ideals of femininity, but also brings out the sexuality that is latent or suppressed in Victorian interpretations. They do so by aligning Ophelia with East Asian ideals of femininity.

In examining the notion of entelechy – defined by Aristotle as the ‘final cause’ in drama – Zornitsa Dimitrova shows that depictions of ‘unsavoury’ content are only justified insofar as they are part of larger networks of aesthetic codification. The unsavoury cannot be an end in itself; neither can it function as an aesthetic category in its own right. Rather, it is a means related to pathos, or suffering, in Greek tragedy and bībhatsa, the ‘odious sentiment’ of the Sanskrit drama. Within such networks of codification, the purpose of the unsavoury is to carry forward the drama to an emotionally uplifting end: katharsis in the Poetics and ananda in Nāṭyaśāstra. This purposiveness – already visible in the entelechial nature of the dramatic plot – relates to a concept of mimesis implicitly understood as a term actional and interactionist in character. But only with the emergence of postdramatic theatre and the dissolution of plot does the unsavoury begin to function as an aesthetic category in its own right.

ABSTRACT
Femi Osofisan’s oeuvre has given him international respect and accolades. This paper gives attention to some of his works as they relate to his immediate society, his theoretical postulations and his ideological bent. It also tries to review some of his works as they affect the African society in general and the Nigerian society in particular. The paper therefore gives clarification to the ideological difference that exists between the first generation and the second generation of writers in Nigeria. It provides a brief outlook on the critical and theoretical essays, postulations, ideological outputs of Femi Osofisan as well as providing brief interpretation of his innovative and indigenous plays like Esu and Vagabond Minstrel (1982), Restless Run of Locusts (1977) and Once Upon Four Robbers (1980).  This paper equally takes a look at various influences of Osofisan’s works, with respect to his use of language, setting, technical ingenuity and dramatic adaptations. It is our hope that this paper provides a humble addition to existing critical works on Femi Osofisan’s works.

Qu’est-ce que lire le théâtre ? Les quelques chercheurs qui se sont penchés sur cette question distinguent en général deux lectures, attentives pour l’une au statut théâtral des textes, pour l’autre à leur statut littéraire. Cet article propose l’hypothèse qu’il existe en fait trois lectures : une lecture littéraire, une lecture scénique et une lecture opératoire. Il s’agit de les caractériser, en comprenant la lecture scénique comme suit : lire la scène s’apparente à une mise en tension, entre le fait de lire une scène et de lire (un) sur scène. Cette lecture scénique mobilise les instructions destinées à la lecture opératoire dans le cadre d’une lecture privée prenant appui sur les mêmes ressorts qu’une lecture littéraire, mais dont les enjeux sont spécifiques. À l’instar des lectures littéraire et opératoire qui peuvent s’exercer sur plusieurs types de textes, la lecture scénique n’est pas réservée aux textes de théâtre.

Εκτεταμένη μελέτη που εξετάζει εξονυχιστικά όλο το έργο του Λασκαράτου από μια θεατρική οπτική. Προηγείται μια βιογραφική παρουσίαση, εστιασμένη στα γεγονότα που συνδέουν τον συγγραφέα με τη θεατρική δραστηριότητα της εποχής του: μαθητικά και φοιτητικά χρόνια στην Κεφαλονιά, την Κέρκυρα, στο Παρίσι και στην Πίζα, συμμετοχή σε θίασο, συγγραφή θεατρικών έργων και σχετική αρθρογραφία. Τα στοιχεία που συγκεντρώνονται δείχνουν ότι ο Λασκαράτος  δεν ήταν άσχετος από τη θεατρική ζωή του νησιού του, αλλά προσηλωμένος περισσότερο στην κοινωνική σάτιρα της καθημερινής ζωής. Διατυπώνονται κάποιες γενικές εκτιμήσεις για το πεζογραφικό και ποιητικό του έργο, για την αρθρογραφία του, καθώς και για τη μεγάλη του συμβολή στη διαμόρφωση του δημοτικιστικού κινήματος.. Αναζητούνται οι πηγές του σατιρικού του πνεύματος και ερμηνεύεται η αντίθεσή του προς το ριζοσπαστικό κίνημα των Επτανήσων, ως αντίδραση στη δημαγωγία. Εξετάζονται στη συνέχεια ορισμένα άρθρα του που σχετίζονται με τη χρησιμότητα του θεάτρου στην κεφαλονίτικη κοινωνία ή με ορισμένα θεατρόμορφα έθιμα (Άρατε πύλας, νεκρικές πομπές κ.ά.). Η σκέψη του κινείται γύρω από μια κοινωνική και ηθική δεοντολογία: θα απορρίψει κάποιες θρησκευτικές τελετές επειδή θυμίζουν παγανιστικά έθιμα, ενώ θα υποστηρίξει τις θεατρικές παραστάσεις που προσφέρουν μιαν αθώα διασκέδαση, καθώς ξεκουράζουν το πνεύμα του θεατή ή αναπτύσσουν τις νοητικές και συναισθηματικές του δυνάμεις και ενισχύουν την ηθική του συνείδηση με δύο συμπληρωματικούς τρόπους έναν θετικό και έναν αρνητικό: από τη μια μεριά, καταπραΰνοντας τα πάθη και αμβλύνοντας τις μικρότητές του μέσα στο ευρύτερο ευγενές περιβάλλον της καλλιτεχνίας και, από την άλλη, παριστώντας του επί σκηνής τα παραστρατήματα και τις αδυναμίες των ανθρώπων.  Στη συνέχεια εξετάζονται οι θεατρικές αναφορές, οι σύντομες θεατρικές μεταφορές που βρίσκονται διασκορπισμένες στα Άπαντα του συγγραφέα, καθώς και η χρήση συναφών γλωσσικών τύπων («θεατρινίζω», «θεατρίσματα» κ.ά.), περιγράφονται οι εικόνες της θεατρικής ζωής και οι σατιρικές αιχμές του στις κοσμικότητες της εποχής, εκτίθενται όλες οι πτυχές του παιδαγωγικού προβληματισμού του. Διαπιστώνεται ότι οι αρνητικές χρήσεις της θεατρικής μεταφοράς, που υποσκάπτουν το κύρος μιας τέχνης διαδεδομένης ευρύτατα στον επτανησιακό χώρο, κατέχουν πράγματι το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό των θεατρικών του αναφορών. Πλην όμως, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν στοχεύουν τη δραματική ποίηση, ενώ ακόμα και όταν σκοπεύουν να πλήξουν το θέατρο γενικά, συχνά δεν αναφέρονται σε μια οργανωμένη θεατρική παράσταση δράματος ή όπερας, αλλά σε εκδηλώσεις επιδεικτικής δεξιότητας, σε ταχυδακτυλουργούς, εγγαστρίμυθους, χορευτές ή τραγουδιστές. Ακολουθεί η ανάλυση των δύο θεατρικών του έργων: Πτώσις της Τρωάδος και Δικανικές κατάχρησες. Στο πρώτο περιγράφεται ο διάλογος του Οδυσσέα με τον Πρίαμο, λίγο προτού καταστραφεί η Τροία και χαρακτηρίζεται από μια μοντέρνα ρεαλιστική ματιά. Ο λόγος του Πριάμου απομακρύνεται για λίγο από τις φλόγες της Τροίας για να έρθει εγγύτερα προς την Κεφαλονιά της «αγγλικής προστασίας» και την Ελλάδα. Στο δεύτερο σατιρίζονται σκληρά οι ατασθαλίες στον δικηγορικό χώρο. Και τα δύο κείμενα λειτουργούν ως παραδείγματα της αισθητικής σκέψης του Λασκαράτου, που χαρακτηρίζεται από τις αριστοτελικές καταβολές της. Το θέατρο έχει πάντα μπροστά του ηθικοδιδακτικούς στόχους και γι’ αυτό πρέπει να παρουσιάζει μόνο ό,τι θεμελιώνει τις ηθικές αρχές και συμβάλλει στη βελτίωση της κοινωνίας. Οι επιδράσεις του Διαφωτισμού, ελληνικού και ευρωπαϊκού είναι εδώ εμφανείς. Ακολουθούν αναλύσεις των θεατρικών στοιχείων σε τρεις σατιρικούς  διαλόγους του συγγραφέα, το εκτενές παρωδιακό ποίημα Καυγάς μεταξύ Αγαμέμνονος και Αχιλέως, καθώς και οι δύο μεγάλες σατιρικές συνθέσεις του Κολιατσιάδα και Μετά την Κολιατσιάδα. Η μελέτη καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι κάτω από το βαρύ κείμενο της αυστηρής λασκαρατικής σάτιρας λανθάνει η ειρωνική ύπαρξη ενός θεάτρου απραγματοποίητου.

Αναπτύσσεται με ένα λεπτομερές «ερωτηματολόγιο ανάλυσης» για έλεγχο και αυτοέλεγχο της θεατρικής κριτικής (πού γράφει, για ποιον γράφει, πώς αρθρώνει την κριτική του, με ποιο ύφος, με ποια ιδεολογία, με ποιες επιστημονικές ή μεθοδολογικές βάσεις, με ποια φιλοσοφικά στοιχεία, με ποιες εγκυκλοπαιδικές γνώσεις, με ποιες παραμέτρους πραγματολογικές, δεοντολογικές, και ακόμα και 40 «ανοιχτά ερωτήματα»).

This definition of dramaturgy as a comprehensive theory of dramatic structure is
the cornerstone of modern dramaturgical practice. This is also how the concept of
dramaturgy is viewed in popular culture. In the February 2013 episode of the hit TV
series Smash, titled “The Dramaturg,” a dramaturg is referred to as “the book
doctor.” His job is to fix the structural errors afflicting the script of the new musical.
This particular example of the pop culture use of the word “dramaturg” reflects a
broader understanding of the concept of dramaturgy to mean any purposeful
arrangement of events, as in the dramaturgy of one’s life, war, or political campaign.

εξετάζονται οι δύο σημαντικοί πόλοι κάθε παράστασης: ο μυθοπλαστικός πόλος της αναφορικότητας (fictum) και ο πραξιακός πόλος της γεγονότητας (factum). Η σχέση των δύο πόλων τροφοδότησε για πολλές δεκαετίες την αντιπαράθεση των υποστηρικτών της κειμενικής αφ’ ενός και αφ’ ετέρου της σκηνικής διάστασης του θεάτρου. Η συζήτηση εδώ αρχίζει από την παραστασιακή στροφή (performative turn) στη δεκαετία του ’60 στις ΗΠΑ (με τα «6 αξιώματα για το περιβαλλοντικό θέατρο» του Richard Schechner) και συνεχίζεται μέχρι τις μέρες μας, όπου διατυπώνονται διάφορες κριτικές προσεγγίσεις στον επεκτατισμό των παραστασιακών σπουδών (Jon McKenzie). Στο πλαίσιο αυτό αναλύονται ορισμένα εννοιολογικά δίπολα, όπως η πραγματικότητα και δραστικότητα (έννοιες που αποδίδονται στις performances) έναντι της φαντασίας και της διασκέδασης (που αποδίδονται στις θεατρικές παραστάσεις) ή το αρχείο vs ρεπερτόριο ή η αφήγηση vs επιτέλεση, ενδεχομενικότητα vs παρουσία, για να δειχθεί σε κάθε περίπτωση ότι οι έννοιες αυτές δεν μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν ως αποκλειστικές ετικέτες σε μία θεατρική παράσταση. Διαπιστώνεται ότι το δραματικό θέατρο ουδέποτε έπαψε να πρωταγωνιστεί στις σκηνές των τελευταίων δεκαετιών, καθώς ούτε μπορεί να διαχωριστεί από τη γενικότερη θεατρική δραστηριότητα, ούτε έπαψε να προσφέρει πολλά και σημαντικά έργα σε πολλές ευρωπαϊκές χώρες.

This brief study of Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman stems from my conception of Nigeria’s literary drama as a conjunction of dramatic literature and performance. I am interested in a method of criticism which will be adequate to the textual basis of this drama and provide an analysis of those key social referents which underscore dramatic action and character. Μελετάται η τακτική και μεθοδευμένη χρήση των διδασκαλιών από τον Ξενόπουλο, αλλά και των παρακειμενικών στοιχείων των έργων του, όπως οι τίτλοι και οι υπότιτλοι, οι πρόλογοι και τα ειδικά προλογικά σημειώματα, με ειδικότερη αναφορά στα έργα Ακτίνες Ν, Κοντέσσα Βαλέραινα, Ψυχοπατέρας και Φοιτηταί. Παρουσιάζονται επιπλέον το στικτικό σύστημα, οι παύσεις, τα αποσιωπητικά, καθώς και η λειτουργία της δείξεως. Η μελέτη εστιάζει στο έργο Δεν είμ’ εγώ ή Η Λογική και εξετάζει το προλογικό σημείωμα τις εισόδους και εξόδους των προσώπων, την πυκνότητα του λόγου και τις συνεμφανίσεις των προσώπων, τα αποσιωπητικά, τη λειτουργία της δείξεως και τις ρητές σκηνικές οδηγίες, το κρυφάκουσμα τις στιχομυθίες παρεξηγήσεως (qui pro quo), τα μονολογικά εδάφια (solilogue), και τα κατ’ ιδίαν μέρη του λόγου (aparté). Το Δεν είμ’ εγώ προτείνεται ως ένα κείμενο ενδεικτικό για την αφομοίωση των τεχνικών της κλασικίζουσας δραματουργίας από το «καλοφτιαγμένο» έργο του γαλλικού θεάτρου κατά τον 19ο αιώνα στη φαρσική κωμωδία του αστικού ρεαλισμού στις πρώτες δεκαετίες του 20ού αιώνα. 
Διαπιστώνεται ότι η μελέτη των σκηνικών οδηγιών και των προλόγων, ως ένα ζωτικό τμήμα της ευρύτερης περικειμενικής, αλλά και της παρακειμενικής εργασίας, παρουσιάζει ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία στην περίπτωση του δραματουργού Ξενόπουλου. Συμβάλλει σε σημαντικό βαθμό στην κατανόηση της συνήθως άψογης τεχνικής του, του διακειμενικού του ορίζοντα, της τεράστιας θεατρικής του εμπειρίας από το πρακτικό θέατρο, του μόνιμου προσανατολισμού του προς τη σκηνική πράξη. Βοηθά όμως και τους ερευνητές στην πληρέστερη τοποθέτηση του συγγραφέα στην κοινωνία και στην εποχή του, αποκαλύπτοντας μερικές φορές, κάποιες σκοτεινές πλευρές της σκέψης και της προσωπικότητάς του.

Nous parlons régulièrement de « textes dramatiques ». Mais quels textes veut-on au juste désigner en recourant à ce terme de « dramatique » ? S'agit-il des textes de théâtre, ou des textes ressortissant à une certaine manière de structurer l'intrigue, ou encore des textes dialogués ? Les trois usages coexistent de nos jours, le plus souvent de manière indifférenciée, dans le monde du théâtre comme dans celui de la littérature, chez les praticiens comme chez les chercheurs. Or il faut le constater : les trois ensembles des textes de l'art dramatique (le théâtre), des genres dramatiques (types de récits et registres de thèmes) et du mode dramatique (le dialogue) ne se superposent qu'en partie. La confusion qui règne à cet égard joue un rôle important dans la manière dont ces textes sont reçus — c'est-à-dire perçus, lus et utilisés. Dès lors, cartographier le territoire des textes « dramatiques » permettrait non seulement d'avoir les idées plus claires, mais encore de réfléchir à la manière dont ces textes sont aujourd'hui susceptibles de fonctionner.
Nous proposons la partition suivante : un texte dramatique est un texte qui relève tantôt de l’art dramatique, tantôt d’un genre dramatique, tantôt encore du mode dramatique — tantôt, c’est-à-dire de l’un de ces trois ensembles, ou de deux d’entre eux, ou encore des trois.

The playwright as a social commentator is both a critic and a prophet. Often times he plays a non-conformist role as he takes a radical stance on the issues affecting the society. The playwright through his art mirrors the society and gives direction on the desirable social pattern to guide society out of its quagmire, at times charting the course of a revolution or revolt. This essay examines revolutionary violence in Esiaba Irobi's Hangmen Also Die. The role of the artist as a prophet, a critic and as an advocate for change is analyzed. Hangmen Also Die portrays the issues and the use of violence as a tool of revolution. Intertwined in the play are the themes of corruption, greed, abuse of power and terrorism. The essay scrutinizes the use of terrorism as a tool against oppressive government and unfavorable politics. Adopting the analytical approach of methodology, this essay seeks to analyze the circumstance that births a violent revolution as the most attractive option. It is discovered that violence holds a performative and transformative element as it can serve as an alternative means in achieving consensus especially in a society riddled with massive corruption and exploitation.

The Niger Delta environmental issue has attracted local and international attention. This is due to the ongoing environmental degradation and pollution caused by oil exploration and exploitation in that region for decades now. Unfortunately, this has led to squalor with variant subsumable imbroglio such as extreme poverty, health hazard, destruction of high magnitude, area boy syndrome, prostitution, high cost of living, youth restiveness, loss of lives kidnapping and other hardships. The people, especially the youths, protested the neglect of the region by causing mayhem through militancy in order to force the government to solve their environmental problems but all to no avail. This paper’s objective is to assess the Niger Delta environmental problems through the binoculars of ecocriticism and the two primary materials from Niger Delta playwrights. These plays are Arnold Udoka’s Inyene: A Dance Drama and Ben Ejiofor’s “Floods against the Crown” within which it is possible for the research to probe into liable entities (the government and its multi-national cohorts) in the despicable conditions of the Niger Delta. The objectivist standpoint of the study enables the researcher to draw a conclusion that might turn out as a lasting panacea for the Niger Delta imbroglio. The paper is not out to absolve the government and multinationals of blame but to properly situate the argument that the political and traditional leaders are culpable in the traumatic situation in which the region has found itself. The paper equally takes a brief look at attempts made by the Niger Delta people to resolve the imbroglio before it escalated into insurgency. Suggestions are offered on how to partner and gear the people towards development that will culminate in a better living and how to address the present pockets of unrest going on in the region presently since the Amnesty program has failed, due to mismanagement, to solve the Niger Delta problem.

The extremism of power has become very worrisome in our contemporary society. This, Ahmed Yerima presents in the play Mojagbe. Man’s ego is beclouded, and because it is beclouded, man’s reasoning psychic is blurred. This study interrogates sit-tight leaders whom after getting to power easily forget their godfather because they do not want them around anymore. This study investigates the psychological context of the character, Oba Mojagbe, thereby examining the use of the unconscious as the playwright’s dramatic technique. The major focus is to examine ritual sacrifice and despotism as a trait of Oba Mojagbe through the concept of the unconscious in the play and critically relate them to our contemporary society. In the course of this research, it was discovered that the instinctive drive ‘Id’ operates at the unconscious level of the human mind and that dreams can only be uncovered between the manifest content and the latent content and also that, some psychological elements are capable of changing the human mind, thereby making man to behave in an unpleasant manner. It concludes that man should know that when he gets to power, he gets there to serve the people and not to be despotic. This study is subjected to a qualitative approach and contextual analysis based on the psychoanalytic criticism as its methodology. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis serves as the theoretical framework of this study.

Les textes de théâtre peuvent-ils être considérés comme des textes littéraires ? Pour répondre à une telle question, il faut d’abord s’entendre sur ce que peuvent bien être « le théâtre » et « la littérature ». Puis, plutôt que de se demander à quel art « appartient » tel texte, ou de quel art « relève » tel autre texte, il s’avère primordial de réfléchir à la manière dont les textes et les spectacles sont publiés et reçus, c’est-à-dire de s’interroger sur la manière dont les objets « littéraires » et « théâtraux » fonctionnent. D’abord, le fonctionnement opéral des textes et des spectacles (la façon dont ils « font œuvre ») complexifie considérablement les deux relations posées habituellement comme allant de soi, d’une part entre l’objet « texte » et l’art littéraire, d’autre part entre l’objet « spectacle » et l’art de la mise en scène. Il importe ensuite de remarquer que le fonctionnement des objets dévie fréquemment de celui qu’on estime conforme : de la même manière que des textes littéraires peuvent fonctionner comme théâtre, des textes théâtraux (et même des spectacles) peuvent fonctionner comme littérature.

Emeka Nwabueze's When the Arrow Rebounds is a dramatic recreation of Chinua Achebe's Arrow of God. The play was written for and premiered at a symposium organised to celebrate Chinua Achebe's 60 th birthday by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Possibly as a result of its affinity with Achebe's classic novel, Nwabueze's play has generated considerable interest among scholars and this has resulted in a lot of significant opinions. But most of these opinions appear to be predominantly formalistic. They hardly go beyond the apparent issues of theme, structure, and characterization. Most of them also focus on the intercultural clash between the Umuaro community and the British colonial authority. These are important, but they hardly explain the various dimensions to the tragedy of Ezeulu, despite his dedication to Ulu, the patron god of Umuaro. This is an identifiable gap in the body of critical opinions on the play. It provides a justification for the adoption of a phenomenological approach in this study to interrogate the relationship between Ezeulu and the Umuaro community beside that between the community and the colonial administration. The result of this enquiry informs the conclusion of this paper that Ezeulu's violation of the ethical code of communal relationship, which is anchored on mutual respect and the supremacy of communal interest over individual considerations, and the need for universal regulation to ensure cosmic balance, more than the clash of cultures is a cogent explanation for the tragedy of Ezeulu.

Εξετάζεται η εφαρμοσιμότητα της φουκωικής έννοιας της ετεροτοπίας στη θεατρική πραγματικότητα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, μελετάται η θεωρία του Michel Foucault για τους συγκεκριμένους ουτοπικούς τόπους, που είναι οι ετεροτοπίες και η δυνατότητα να μελετηθεί η θεατρική σκηνή ως μία ετεροτοπία. Υποστηρίζεται ότι θα μπορούσαμε να σκεφτούμε το θέατρο με έναν γενικό τρόπο, όχι με τη δύσχρηστη πλέον έννοια του καθρέφτη που αναπαράγει ένα οπτικό είδωλο της κοινωνίας, αλλά ως μία ετεροτοπία που, ενώ διαφοροποιείται από τον υπόλοιπο κοινωνικό χώρο, ως ένας τόπος εντός και δια του οποίου δημιουργούνται μυθοπλαστικοί τόποι και μυθοπλαστικές σχέσεις, επιτρέπει στους θεατές να αναγνωρίσουν τον εαυτό τους μέσα στον κοινωνικό χώρο ή ακόμα και να ανακατασκευάσουν αυτό που πίστευαν μέχρι αυτήν τη στιγμή ότι αντιπροσωπεύουν: με δυο λόγια, να συνειδητοποιήσουν ποιοι είναι εντός του χώρου και ποιες δυνατότητες έχουν να μετασχηματίσουν αυτό που είναι.
Το μελέτημα καταλήγει στη διαπίστωση ότι η αναφορά στην ετεροτοπία συνεπάγεται πάντα τη θεατρική σχέση, έτσι ώστε η σκηνή να μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως η κατ’ εξοχήν ετεροτοπία, η ετεροτοπία όλων των άλλων κοινωνικών τόπων. Αλλά ισχύει και το αντίστροφο: όπως φαίνεται από την προσεκτική εξέταση των πέντε φουκωικών αρχών, οι ετεροτοπικές σχέσεις πάντα αποκαλύπτουν μια λανθάνουσα σκηνή, δηλαδή έναν τόπο πέραν του αληθούς και του ψευδούς, έναν τόπο που υπερβαίνει την αντιθετική σχέση μεταξύ πραγματικότητας και ψευδαίσθησης, έναν τόπο όπου όλοι οι κοινωνικοί χώροι θα μπορούσαν να εν-τοπιστούν και να μετασχηματιστούν ─ έστω και για λίγο. Με την έννοια αυτήν, η ετεροτοπία είναι η σκηνή όλων των άλλων κοινωνικών τόπων.

In agreement with Frederick Jameson’s “Form itself is but the working out of content in the realm of the superstructure,” this initial paper is concerned with a critical assessment of the confluence of art and revolution in Kole Omotoso’s two published plays The Curse and Shadows in the Horizon; concerned with the artistic mediation of the revolutionary will, its expression in specific theatrical experiments, or, merely, its adjuncts in the verb and the visual within or outside the mainstream aesthetics and social vision of the “committed” dramatist.

Saying that Africa is bedeviled by myriads of sociopolitical and economic problems is stating the obvious. There is crass neglect of the masses by the government; thus widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots and aggravation in exploitation and corruption in this continent. This, no doubt is part of the attendant problems of capitalism. Obviously, this shows that capitalism has done more harm than good to the African society. No wonder then that many African writers, most especially dramatists have responded overwhelmingly to the various manifestations of capitalist manipulations. The Leftists are not left out in this fight for justice and decorum within the polity and they also clamour for an egalitarian, classless, corruption-free society. The Marxists came to the fore in this paper and their postulations for such society is given adequate attention. The Marxist doctrine of historical materialism and the recommendation of revolution to stop all injustices are addressed. Two plays of Femi Osofisan, Once Upon Four Robbers (1980) and Red is the Freedom Road (1982) are used to press in our points. It is our belief that this piece of writing will extend the frontier of knowledge in the field of literary criticism.

Plimoth Plantation, a Massachusetts living history museum depicting the year 1627 in Plymouth Colony, advertises itself as a place where "history comes alive." The site uses costumed Pilgrims, who speak to visitors in a first-personpresentvoice, in order to create a total living environment. Reenactment practices like this offer possibilities to teach history in a dynamic manner by immersing visitors in a space that allows them to suspend disbelief and encounter museum exhibits on an affective level. However, whether or not history actually "comes alive"at Plimoth Plantation needs to be addressed, especially in the face of new or postmodem historiography. No longer is it so simple to say the past can "come alive," given that in the last thirty years it has been shown that the "past" is contestable. Caryl Churchill's plays thematically embody elements of many-isms such as feminism, sexism, capitalism, and socialism, labeling her dramaturgy as an eclectic combination of social philosophies and political ideologies. Although genuinely creative and original in her writing and theatrical practices, Caryl Churchill does not refrain from making use of preceding European theatrical theory, practice, and culture. In this sense, she is a playwright who benefits considerably from the thematic and technical aspects of the Brechtian epic theatre, which can be observed in her Mad Forest. Sarah Kane, on the other hand, with her experimental dramaturgy that stretches and twists features of realism and naturalism into new post-dramatic forms, is no less different from her predecessor Caryl Churchill in terms of embracing challenging, confrontational ideas and reflecting them in her plays. Notwithstanding with her openness to novel dramatic styles, Sarah Kane, too, acknowledges earlier dramatic aesthetics as seen in her Phaedra's Love, which is an adaptation of the classical Roman playwright Seneca's Phaedra. Likewise, it can be observed that Sarah Kane utilizes certain features of the Brechtian epic theater in her Cleansed. Considering these, this article studies how and to what extent Caryl Churchill and Sarah Kane maintain the Brechtian dramatic elements in their Mad Forest and Cleansed, respectively. By examining this tripartite interaction among Bertolt Brecht, Caryl Churchill and Sarah Kane, the study also tries to reinterpret the dramatic relations among these seemingly distant playwrights of different generations.

Θεατρολογικό μελέτημα για τους όρους και τα όρια της κριτικής του Θεάτρου. Διακρίνεται αρχικώς η κριτική θεάτρου από τη γενική θεωρία περί θεάτρου. Σημειώνεται πως ο θεωρητικός του θεάτρου εξετάζει είτε τα εφικτά στο θέατρο σημειακά συστήματα είτε και τις πραγματοποιημένες θεατρικές μορφές, οι οποίες, υπακούοντας σε κοινά αισθητικά κριτήρια ή σε κοινές ιδεολογικές επιταγές, συγκροτούν μια κοινή νόρμα και εγγράφονται στον ίδιο ειδολογικό, κοινωνικό και πολιτισμικό ορίζοντα. Aντιθέτως, ο κριτικός του θεάτρου ενδιαφέρεται πρωτίστως για τη μεμονωμένη παράσταση ενός έργου, αποτιμώντας όλες τις παραμέτρους της (κείμενο, σκηνική ερμηνεία, κοινωνικό περιβάλλον). Eννοείται βεβαίως πως ούτε ο θεωρητικός μπορεί να επιτύχει στο έργο του χωρίς το πλούσιο εμπειρικό υλικό των μεμονωμένων παραστάσεων, αλλά ούτε και ο κριτικός μπορεί να προβαίνει σε ασφαλείς και έγκυρε αποτιμήσεις εάν δε διαθέτει πλήρη θεωρητική κατάρτιση περί της ουσίας και της ιστορίας του θεάτρου. H αλληλεπίδραση αυτή μεταξύ θεωρίας και κριτικής έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία για τη δεύτερη, ως προς τον προσδιορισμό τού ερμηνευτικού της χαρακτήρα και την εγγραφή της στα πλαίσια μιας επικοινωνιακής δράσης. Στη συνέχεια υπογραμμίζεται η διφυία της θεατρικής τέχνης, στην οποία αναφέρεται η κριτική. Mια θεατρική παράσταση δεν είναι ένα θέαμα με σταθερή δομή και τυποποιημένη μορφή, αλλά αποτελεί μια ιδιαίτερη μορφή τέχνης που ενσαρκώνει επί σκηνής ένα δραματικό κείμενο• με άλλους λόγους, είναι η σκηνική εκπλήρωση του κειμένου αυτού. Aπό την άλλη μεριά, το δραματικό κείμενο δεν είναι απλώς ένα λογοτεχνικό κείμενο, προορισμένο να αναγνωστεί• είναι ένα κείμενο που έχει γραφτεί προκειμένου να «παιχτεί» επί σκηνής. H δυναμική αυτή σχέση κειμένου και παράστασης συνεπάγεται ότι, αφ’ ενός το κείμενο εκκρεμεί συνεχώς προς τις επικείμενες σκηνικές εκπληρώσεις του και, αφ’ ετέρου η παράσταση δεν μπορεί να εννοηθεί αποκομμένη και ανεξάρτητη από το κείμενο. Στην προοπτική αυτή, ο σύγχρονος κριτικός οφείλει πριν απ’ όλα να εντοπίσει και να αξιολογήσει τον σύνδεσμο κειμένου και παράστασης. Mεταξύ κειμένου και παράστασης ο κριτικός επωμίζεται να συλλάβει τους παλμούς του παρόντος μέσα από τα ζωτικά στοιχεία του παρελθόντος• επωμίζεται όμως να ανιχνεύσει και μια βαθύτερη συμβολική σχέση που συνδέει τα δύο επίπεδα της παράστασης που κρίνει: οφείλει να συλλάβει αφ’ ενός το κείμενο ως μια εν σπέρματι παράσταση ενός φαντασιακού κόσμου και, αφ’ ετέρου, την παράσταση ως μια δυνατή ενσαρκωμένη ανάπτυξη και μετουσίωση της αρχικής αυτής παράστασης. Aκολούθως προσεγγίζεται το μεθοδολογικό πρόβλημα της εξήγησης και της κατανόησης. Kαι οι δύο αυτές έννοιες εκλαμβάνονται ως δύο διακεκριμένες συμπληρωματικές λειτουργίες του ίδιου ερμηνευτικού εγχειρήματος. H εξήγηση θεωρείται ως ο πόλος της εκλογίκευσης, της πειθούς και της γενικευτικής αναγωγής μέσα στο ερμηνευτικό εγχείρημα• η κατανόηση αντιθέτως εστιάζεται στην ειδική συνθήκη και ερείδεται στη βιωματική σύλληψη του εκάστοτε αντικειμένου. H συλλειτουργία εξήγησης και κατανόησης τείνει να εντάξει το προς μελέτη αντικείμενο σε τύπους και κατηγορίες της επιστημονικής παράδοσης και της ιστορίας χωρίς να απολέσει την αυτοτέλειά του και, παράλληλα, να προσδιορίσει τους όρους της ιδιαιτερότητάς του με τη βοήθεια γενικών αρχών. Tο γένος και το είδος, η συνομοταξία και η ανεξάρτητη εκδοχή, η αντικειμενική αξίωση του κειμένου ως τέτοιου και η υποκειμενική συνθήκη της πρόσληψής του συνιστούν εδώ τους όρους μιας αμοιβαίας σύγκλισης, ενός αμφίπλευρου συσχετισμού, κοντολογίς μιας διαλεκτικής σχέσης, που ονομάζουμε ερμηνεία και την οποία ο κριτικός πρέπει να διατηρεί πάντα ζωντανή στη σκέψη του. Aφού μελετηθούν στη συνέχεια η δημοσιογραφική και η ερευνητική κριτική, επιχειρείται ο προσδιορισμός του κριτικού λόγου ως επικοινωνιακής δράσης ―  όπως περίπου τον οριοθετεί ο Habermas ―  δηλαδή ενός λόγου αυτοκριτικού που αποβλέπει στην κοινωνικοποίηση των αισθητικών προβλημάτων, στην άμεση συνειδητοποίηση του κοινωνικού και ιστορικού ρόλου της θεατρικής τέχνης για μια κοινότητα ανθρώπων, στη συνέχιση πολιτιστικών παραδόσεων και στη μέσω αυτών δημιουργία νέων αυθεντικών καλλιτεχνικών μορφωμάτων. Yπογραμμίζεται πως ο κριτικός λόγος ως επικοινωνιακή δράση δεν εκλαμβάνει την επικοινωνία ως απλή ενημέρωση και μετάδοση πληροφοριών, αλλά ως μια βαθύτερη διαπροσωπική σχέση, κατά την οποία το σκεπτόμενο υποκείμενο μπορεί να αναφέρεται στον εαυτό του ως φορέα του λόγου, ως συμμετέχοντα σε μια διάδραση από τη σκοπιά του άλλου και ως άλλον  από τη σκοπιά ενός τρίτου για τον οποίον ή χάρη στον οποίο τελείται η διάδραση. Στην περίπτωσή μας, οι τρεις όροι της επικοινωνιακής σχέσης είναι ο δημιουργός του έργου (συγγραφέας και σκηνικοί συντελεστές), ο κριτικός και ο εκάστοτε αναγνώστης-θεατής. Aυτοί οι τρεις εισέρχονται σε μια διαδικασία συνεννόησης, η οποία συντονίζει και τη μεταξύ τους δράση. O κριτικός δε «μεταφράζει» απλώς τον λόγο του ενός προς τον άλλον, αλλά εκφέρει και ο ίδιος τον δικό του λόγο, που είναι απορητικός, ελεγκτικός, καταφατικός, απαιτητικός. H διαδικασία αυτή είναι η προέκταση του ερμηνευτικού κύκλου στο επίπεδο της διάδρασης όσων συμμετέχουν σ’ ένα θεατρικό γεγονός. Σύμφωνα με αυτήν, ένα νέο θεατρικό έργο δημιουργεί, και με τη μεσολάβηση του κριτικού,  μια νέα συνείδηση, έναν νέο κόσμο στον θεατή, που σημαίνει ότι ο θεατής δεν είναι πλέον ο ίδιος• είναι ένας νέος θεατής που παροτρύνεται από τον κριτικό να γίνει κι ένας νέος ηθοποιός στο μεγάλο θέατρο του κοινωνικού βίου μόλις πέσει η αυλαία.

Es mediante la apelación a algunos críticos relevantes de la modernidad – Freud, Simmel, Adorno, Horkheimer, Shestov, Müller-Hill, Kafka, etc.– que Bauman se esfuerza por construir una auténtica ontología de la modernidad, así como una fenomenología crítica de sus implicaciones culturales, morales y políticas, y de sus límites –perfilados por la presencia infranqueable de la ambivalencia–, con las que su texto adquiere el rango de una aportación señera a esta misma tradición moderna de la sospecha.2 Bauman, apoyado en autores como Horkheimer y Adorno, quienes realizan una crítica demoledora de la Ilustración y dejan entrever un influjo de desconfianza y pesimismo sobre buena parte de la literatura filosófica europea de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Es Horkheimer, uno de los miembros fundadores de la Escuela de Frankfurt, quien desarrolla la “teoría critica”3, a partir del predominio de una racionalidad procedimental a partir de la cual el conocimiento humano no opera según presupuestos jerárquicos-metafísicos (teoría tradicional) sino pragmático-procedimentales (teoría crítica) al interior de las comunidades científicas y de los contextos socio-culturales del mundo. Esto significa que todo modo de conocer es interesado y, que sólo conocemos por el interés. Con lo que sienta las bases de la Ecuela de la Sospecha. De allí que Bauman en Modernidad y ambivalencia4 pretendiera, como bien lo apunta Wellmer, complementar la tarea emprendida por los pensadores más destacados de la primera generación de la Escuela de Frankfurt. Bauman “intenta envolver con carne histórica y sociológica el esqueleto de la Dialéctica de la Ilustración”.6 Lo que dota a Bauman de una particular originalidad a la vez que de una filiciación a tradiciones filosóficas reconocibles y contrapuestas: “por un lado, la que originándose en Schopenhauer, pasa por Nietzsche para acabar alcanzando a Klages y, por otro, la que desde Hegel, pasando por Marx y Weber, arriba hasta el joven Lukács”.

The Influence of the Frankfurt School in Zygmunt Bauman and Richard Rorty: From Theory Criticism of Liquid Modernity and Pragmatism

Abstract
It is by appealing to some important critics of Freud, Simmel, Adorno, Horkheimer, Shestov, Müller-Hill, Kafka, etc. Bauman strives to build a real ontology of modernity modernity, and a critical phenomenology cultural, moral and political implications, and its limits -perfilados by the impassable presence of ambivalence with which the text acquires the status of a landmark to this very modern tradition of sospecha.1 Bauman contribution, based on authors as Horkheimer and Adorno, who made a devastating critique of the Enlightenment and glimpse an influx of mistrust and pessimism over much of European philosophical literature in the second half of the twentieth century. It Horkheimer, one of the founding members of the Frankfurt School, who developed the "critical theory" from the predominance of a procedural rationality from which human knowledge does not operate as hierarchical-metaphysical assumptions (traditional theory) but pragmatic-procedural (critical theory) within scientific communities and socio-cultural contexts of the world. This means that every mode of knowing is concerned, and we know only the interest. Thus the basis of Ecuela of Suspicion. Hence Bauman in Modernity and ambivalencia pretend, as well as pointing Wellmer, complement the work undertaken by the leading thinkers of the first generation of the Frankfurt School. Bauman "try wrapping with historical and sociological flesh the skeleton of the Dialectic of Enlightenment". What Bauman gives a particular originality while a filiciación a recognizable and competing philosophical traditions: "first, which originating from Schopenhauer, passes Nietzsche6 to finish reaching Klages and, secondly, that from Hegel, Marx and Weber through, up until the young Lukács".

Introducción:

El influjo del pensamiento de Nietzsche, en los varios niveles de la cultura occidental, se insertó en un ambiente espiritual acompañado de otros movimientos, enraizados en el proyecto de una nueva moralidad y religiosidad postcristianas. Movimientos contemporáneos y ligados muchas veces al nietzscheanismo han sido el wagnerismo, el espiritismo y el ocultismo, las sectas antroposóficas y teosóficas, algunas formas de socialismo o de anarquismo, y grupos análogos, que buscaban en este tipo de filosofías, y en las ciencias contemporáneas, la justificación de su visión del mundo y de sus prácticas heterodoxas neopaganas. En este contexto Nietzsche influyó de modo notable en la praxis de la psicología en sus mismos orígenes, aún antes y más fuertemente que en filosofía. Un ejemplo claro de ello es Ludwig Klages, uno de los fundadores de la caracterología y de la grafología. La psicología klagesiana se funda en su pensamiento filosófico nietzscheano que inspiró su militancia en círculos teosóficos y ocultistas pro-arios y antisemitas -algunos lo consideran como uno de los fundamentos teóricos del nacionalsocialismo-. La "psicología del futuro", si quiere ser fecunda, afirma Klages, debe inspirarse en las intuiciones nietzscheanas. Sobre todo, el psicólogo debe, como Nietzsche, superar su misma humanidad, poniéndose más allá del bien y del mal, descubriendo la malicia esencial del corazón humano. Para Klages, finalmente, el psicoanálisis es una versión vulgarizada de la psicología de Nietzsche. Klages es hoy un autor casi olvidado, tal vez por su vinculación con el nacionalsocialismo, y fue vencido por el psicoanálisis. Sin embargo, su influjo fue grande en sus contemporáneos, sobre todo en aquellos dedicados al estudio del carácter. Además de su discípulo Hans Prinzhorn, podemos nombrar entre los autores que se inspiran enormemente en el caracterólogo alemán a Philipp Lersch, tercer sucesor de Wundt en Leipzig, y después profesor en Munich.

Nigeria has witnessed a steady development in modern drama consciousness and practice. As Johnson (2001) accurately opines, this is self-evident in the plethora of published and unpublished dramatic works that presently adumbrate the literary, dramatic and theatrical landscape of the country, and also in the innumerable stage, radio, television and video productions of these and other play scripts and dramatic creations by professionals, academic and amateur groups.

Πρέπει να ομολογήσουμε ότι το τοπίο δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο. άνάμεσα σε δύο ακραίες θέσεις, όπου οι κριτικές είτε ασκούν μεγάλη επιρροή στα κριτήρια επιλογής του κοινού, (η ιδανική συνθήκη για τους φιλόδοξους κριτικούς) είτε, αντιθέτως, η επίδρασή τους είναι ισχνή (η ιδανική συνθήκη για πολλούς «αδικημένους» καλλιτέχνες), αναπτύσσονται από μακρού χρόνου διάφορες τεχνικές ενίσχυσης των παραστά-σεων στη συνείδηση του κοινού, έως ότου αρχίσει να λειτουργεί ο σχεδόν πάντα αποτελεσματικός μηχανισμός της «από στόμα σε στόμα» διάδοσης των θετικών σχολίων και των προτροπών.

Wrestling is one of the most celebrated cultures of the Ikwerre people, especially in Elimgbu community of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State of Nigeria. Wrestling is dialectically known as " Egelege " both in Elimgbu and Otah and other parts of the Ikwerre communities. It is one of the physical calisthenics that tend to foster unity amongst the people. The idea is to situate the (Egelege) wrestling contest as a typical traditional theatre. This work goes into the study of rituals and wrestling festival in Ikwerre land, but with a focus on the theatrical dimension in Elimgbu wrestling festival in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The work looks at such relevant aspects as the performer and performing styles, dialogues, music, dance, movement, and performance area. The study identifies the problems and prospects of wrestling festival in Ikwerre clan and its attraction to tourists. The work concludes that there is a mutual relationship between ancestors and performers, and that ritual and performance are in harmony before metamorphosing into entertainment. Finally, it is recommended that the festival be given greater relevance as a tourist based project.

Εξετάζονται τα στοιχεία που διέπουν τον σατιρικό λόγο του συγγραφέα. Στην περίπτωση του Χουρμούζη έναν σπάνιο συνδυασμό υψηλής ηθικής κρίσης και καυστικής κωμικής εμπειρίας: κοινωνικό πρόταγμα αφ΄ ενός, θεατρικός λόγος αφ΄ ετέρου, συντίθενται προκειμένου να δημιουργηθεί η χουρμουζική σάτιρα. Ως χαρακτηριστικά της γραφής του εντοπίζονται τα εξής: αμηχάνευτο πνεύμα, βαθύτατα λαϊκός χαρακτήρας, εκτεταμένες ρήσεις που αποκαλύπτουν την ασυδοσία και τη σαπρία του δημοσίου βίου, σύντομες σαρκαστικές αντιφωνήσεις, αυθόρμητες επαναλήψεις καυστικών σχολίων, λιτότητα, παρατακτικότητα και αυθορμητισμός, αβίαστος βηματισμός της καθημερινής γλώσσας, πρωτοφανής δύναμη και αμεσότητα, ώστε η σατιρική στάση να προσλαμβάνει χαρακτήρα σχεδόν επιθετικό απέναντι στην κοινωνική πραγματικότητα. Tο καλό και το κακό γίνονται κατανοητά από τον θεατή με ευχέρεια, δεν μπορούν όμως να διαφοροποιηθούν μεταξύ τους  ριζικά, ενώ σε κάποιες πολύ ευτυχείς περιπτώσεις, συμφύρεται σκόπιμα το ένα με το άλλο, έτσι που να ενισχύεται η σατιρική επίθεση και, παράλληλα, να αμβλύνονται οι διπολικές σχέσεις. H σατιρική φόρμα επηρεάζεται από τη λιτή και παρατακτική δομή της σύνολης δραματουργίας του, αλλά και από την αμεσότητα και την ευθυβολία της γλώσσας. Από τις τεχνικές της σάτιρας διακρίνονται τέσσερις κατηγορίες: η ασυμφωνία, η έκπληξη, η υποκρισία και η υπεροχή, καθώς και αρκετές υποκατηγορίες: η υπερβολή, η καρικατούρα, η αναγωγή στο παράλογο, η αντίθεση, οι κυνικές επιγραμματικές φράσεις, τα απροσδόκητα γεγονότα, η λεκτική ειρωνεία, η παρωδία, οι μεταμφιέσεις και τα προσωπεία, η αλληγορία κ.ά.

Το βιβλίο, που αποτελείται από έξι κεφάλαια και είναι το πρώτο χρονολογικά που γράφεται για τον Ιάκωβο Καμπανέλλη, επιχειρεί μια συστηματική ανάλυση της δραματουργίας του μεγάλου έλληνα συγγραφέα στο σύνολό της, εφαρμόζοντας διαφορετικές μεθόδους ανάλυσης και κριτικής προσέγγισης. Το πρώτο κεφάλαιο («Μικρό οδοιπορικό στη χώρα Καμπανέλλη») συνδυάζει στοιχεία μίας σύνθετης εργοβιογραφίας, μιας ιστορικής περιγραφής και μιας διακειμενικής προσέγγισης των κειμένων. Ο απολογισμός αυτός καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι εάν τα έργα του είχαν γραφτεί στα αγγλικά, ο συγγραφέας του θα θεωρείτο σήμερα παγκοσμίως κορυφαίος.
Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο ασχολείται με τους πρωτεϊσμούς του δραματικού χώρου, χρησιμοποιώντας χωρικές συντεταγμένες του άνω/κάτω, μέσα/έξω κ.ά. για να διαφανούν οι οριζόντιες και κάθετες διατάξεις του χώρου, οι διαστάσεις της εσωτερικότητας και της εξωτερικότητας, οι ιεραρχικές σχέσεις, η σφαίρα του ιδιωτικού και του δημοσίου, του ατομικού και του διυποκειμενικού. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο εξετάζονται οι τροπικότητες του χρόνου. Αναλύονται οι χρόνοι της ιστορίας και εκείνοι του μύθου, οι ονειρικοί χρόνοι, ο παρελθοντικός χρόνος που συμπυκνώνεται στα πρόσωπα, αλλά και στα πράγματα (Ο δρόμος περνά από μέσα), ο μεταφυσικός χρόνος που επιτρέπει τη συμβίωση νεκρών και ζωντανών (Ο Δείπνος), αλλά και τη ζωή στον κάτω κόσμο (Μια κωμωδία) σε μια εντυπωσιακή άρση του έσχατου ορίου που είναι ο θάνατος, ο χρόνος του θεάτρου σε αντίστιξη, αλλά και σε συνδυασμό με τον χρόνο της καθημερινής ζωής (Τελευταία πράξη), ο πολυεπίπεδος χρόνος με τις εγκιβωτισμένες χρονικότητες που συνδυάζεται με τον πολυεδρικό εαυτό (Μια συνάντηση κάπου αλλού) και με την χαϊντεγγεριανή βιομέριμνα.
Το τέταρτο κεφάλαιο σκιαγραφεί τους διακειμενικούς ιστούς στη δραματουργία του Καμπανέλλη και ειδικά εκείνους που σχετίζονται με την αρχαία ελληνική λογοτεχνία. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στους Νεκρικούς διαλόγους του Λουκιανού (Μια κωμωδία), στις μυθικές και λογοτεχνικές αφηγήσεις για τα πρόσωπα του Οδυσσέα και της Πηνελόπης, του Ελπήνορα και του Τηλέμαχου, αλλά και στην τυπολογία των προσώπων (είρων, αλαζόνας, βωμολόχος κ.ά.) και τη θεματολογία των αριστοφανικών κειμένων. Είναι η πρώτη φορά στην ελληνική θεατρολογία που εξετάζεται μεθοδικά η σχέση του Καμπανέλλη με τον Αριστοφάνη. Το κεφάλαιο κλείνει με μια ανάλυση των μονοπράκτων Ο Δείπνος, Γράμμα στον Ορέστη και Πάροδο Θηβών που ανανεώνουν τη θεματολογία του Θηβαϊκού κύκλου και του κύκλου των Ατρειδών. Το πέμπτο κεφάλαιο εξετάζει το παιχνίδι της ειρωνείας, τις πολλαπλές χρήσεις και εφαρμογές της στο έργο του Καμπανέλλη και ειδικότερα σε δύο επίπεδα: στο γλωσσικό και σε αυτό των δραματικών καταστάσεων. Στο γλωσσικό επίπεδο, τα ίχνη της ειρωνείας εντοπίζονται ήδη στους τίτλους των κειμένων, όπως και στα ονόματα των προσώπων, στις παρωδιακές μορφές, στην αυτοειρωνεία, την υπερβολή, τον υποτονισμό, τον υπερτονισμό, το burlesque, το υφολογικό πλασάρισμα, τις αταίριαστες λέξεις κ.ά. Στην ειρωνεία των καταστάσεων αναφέρονται οι διαφορετικές γωνίες αφήγησης που δημιουργούν πολύπλευρες, ενίοτε δε και αντινομικές καταστάσεις, οι δισημίες και οι αμφιθυμίες, οι ψευδαισθήσεις και οι αυταπάτες που θολώνουν την ανθρώπινη κρίση και συμπεριφορά. Η ειρωνεία των γεγονότων περιλαμβάνει τις απρόσμενες εκβάσεις και τις απροσδόκητες εξελίξεις. Διαπιστώνεται ότι ο ειρωνικός λόγος είναι εγγενής στο καμπανελλικό θέατρο, καθώς δηλώνει την πάροδο της ψευδαίσθησης δίπλα στην οδό της αντίληψης και υπαινίσσεται τη ζωντανή αντίφαση που διέπει την ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη.
Στο έκτο και τελευταίο κεφάλαιο του βιβλίου μελετώνται ορισμένες βασικές πτυχές του καμπανελλικού δραματικού λόγου, όπως οι σκηνικές οδηγίες, το στικτικό σύστημα, οι τίτλοι και οι υπότιτλοι, οι παύσεις και οι σιωπές, οι αφηγηματικές ρήσεις και το montage, η τεχνική των μονολόγων (προτείνεται μάλιστα μια πρωτότυπη ανάλυση του έργου Γράμμα στον Ορέστη βάσει των μονολογικών και διαλογικών διανυσμάτων), ποσοτικές διαστάσεις των διαλόγων, η επεξεργασία των θεμάτων, των μοτίβων και των επιμέρους θεματικών αντικειμένων, οι ομιλιακές πράξεις, η εκκρεμότητα και ελλειπτικότητα των διαλόγων (qui pro quo, απροσδόκητη επικοινωνία, συνεκδοχικός λόγος. Επιχειρείται έτσι μια ανατομία και μια συστηματική ανάλυση του δραματικού λόγου ως τέτοιου, προκειμένου να φανεί η τέχνη και η τεχνική του.
Το βιβλίο ολοκληρώνεται με βιβλιογραφία 28 σελίδων, ευρετήρια έργων, συγγραφέων και μελετητών.

"Les études de l’allégorie dans la littérature française du XVIIe siècle se sont focalisées, pour l’heure, sur la dimension politique, malgré la présence de plusieurs autres « strates » allégoriques interdépendantes (Couton, Écritures Codées, 1990). Cet article est donc une tentative de relier les strates politique et thématique, bien connues, à un discours sur le genre élaboré pendant le troisième quart du XVIIe siècle par l’entremise de prologues allégoriques. Notre objectif est de souligner les applications théoriques de ces prologues ainsi que les enjeux du genre pendant cette période.

The dramatic prologue and generic allegory in 17th century France

Studies on allegory in the French Grand Siècle to date have tended to focus on the political dimension, despite our awareness that allegory functions through the interplay of different “strata” (Couton, Écritures Codées, 1990). This article therefore aims to relate the more overt political and thematic strata of allegory to an allegorical discourse on genre that takes place in the prologues to operas, comédies-ballets and machine plays in the third quarter of the 17th century, highlighting the theoretical applications of such prologues, as well as the stakes of genre during this period."
