Early modern Paris

The article is dedicated to the series of works created by the artist of the Second school of Fontainebleau Toussaint Dubreuil on the theme of the poem «Franciade» of Pierre de Ronsard. The paintings were created during the period 1594-1604 for the Chateau-Neuf de Saint-Germain-en-Laye and became an important part of the epoch of Henri IV. The most eminent examples of works concerned the affirmation of the king’s of France authority (who desired to show himself as a legitimate governor) are examined in the article.Статья посвящена серии работ, созданных художником Второй школы Фонтенбло Туссеном Дюбреем на сюжет поэмы «Франсиада» Пьера Ронсара. В статье рассматриваются наиболее яркие работы, которые отражают утверждение авторитета короля Франции, желавшего показать себя легитимным правителем

Sir Edward Ford, a member of the West Sussex gentry and inventor, who fought for the Royalists in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, was employed, with Oliver Cromwell's encouragement, and at the request of the Corporation of London, in devising an engine for raising the River Thames water into all the higher streets of the city, a height of ninetythree feet. This enterprise has been largely neglected by historians, even though it seems to have been a technological success.

British acquaintance with Russia and formation of descriptive models takes place in the second half of the 16th century. It is the time of the first trade and diplomatic visits as well as the first reports and notes about Russia. In addition to business reports, European travelers publish fiction travelogues, upon which the image of Russia is also being constructed. Maps supplement the image of the Moscow kingdom with a visual range – images of flora and fauna. The article discusses the main motives found in travelogues, and gives an overview of the representative strategies used by the authors in describing the space. At that time, stable descriptive models and stereotypes were just being formed, and their analysis allows us to understand the techniques of interaction between England and Russia over the next centuries.

HISTORIOGRAPHY
The events of early 14th century – the struggle between Philip IV and
Gui de Dampier, count of Flanders, the capture of the county by French
as well as the Flemish uprising against the French governor (the Matins
of Bruges and the Battle of Courtrai) – turned to be very convenient for
the “instrumentalisation of history” and had been studied for a long time
as a national conflict (the opposition of Belgium and France, Flemish and
“francocised” Belgian state). There were also some different interpretations including the Soviet historiography. Nevetheless the federalisation of
Belgium strongly supported the turn to more critical and complex analysis of the events in modern historiography that focuses mostly on the internal contradictions in the Flemish society of late 13th – early 14th century.

This article is about the represantion of the brigands – mercenaries of the Hundred Years’ War – in the historiographical sources created during the period of the war. After analysing the sources, we can set up several principal character traits attributed to the brigands by the authors. For the most part they are negative as for example сunning, pitiless, lack of discipline, desire for personal enrichment. The positive ones are generally shown only to emphasize on this background their typical negative features.

Review of book  written by Nadine Nieszawer, with Claude Lanzmann (pref.), and Deborah Princ, Arthur Princ, Boris Princ, Marie Boyé Taillan, and Paul Fogel. Artistes Juifs de l'Ecole de Paris 1905-1939 is the second edition of a book intended, from the onset, to catalogue each and ever Jewish artist with any contact to the School of Paris.

In this paper I describe the relationship between the methodological possibilities and limitations of mental maps and the size of urban communities where the method is used. To illustrate my findings, I compare three Russian cities: Moscow, Kimry, and Myshkin. From this analysis I conclude that generalized elements of cities’ mental images must be supplemented with their exogenous descriptions (out-descriptions, brand images) that allow to delineate territorial boundaries and a semantic form of imaginary city.

Статья посвящена проблеме описания средневековых политических ритуалов в нарративных источниках Оттоновской эпохи. Лиутпранд Кремонский, один из выдающихся сочинителей X в., нарисовал образ короля Оттона I как «гневающегося властителя» в контексте ритуала примирения государя и непокорного вассала (т.н. ритуал deditio). Задача работы – сравнить описания этих символических сцен у Лиутпранда со свидетельствами других современных ему авторов. Это сопоставление позволяет выявить некоторые существенные особенности подхода Лиутпранда и проанализировать, как субъективность автора могла трансформировать его описание ритуала.

The article is dedicated to the problem of description of medieval political rituals in narrative sources of the Ottonian age. Liutprand of Cremona, one of the eminent writers of the 10th century, depicted the image of king Otto I. as a “harsh ruler” in context of the ritual of reconciliation between ruler and rebellious vassal (the so-called deditio). The object of the work is to compare Liutprand’s descriptions of such symbolic scenes with testimonies of other contemporary writers; this comparison allows to reveal some significant peculiarities of Liutprand’s approach and to analyze how the subjectivity of author could transform his description of ritual.

The paper considers the problem of the reception of Boccaccio’s “Decameron” in French literature of XV-XVI centuries. Considering early French translations of «Decameron» as well as Marguerite de Navarre’s «Heptameron», it may be concluded that Boccaccio’s popularity in French literature was partly due to the possibility the moral interpretation of his writing.

The edition of Susan Schulten’s monography devoted to the history of American thematical mapping of 19th century, gives an impulse to turn to the general history of historical atlases. This is a young branch of historiography: the works of 1997-2013 outlined the basic chronology of the genre and defined the range of problems related to further studies. The essential themes in the field are the early works on history of the genre (vetus geography, “ancient geography’’), and the history of the school historical atlases in XIX-XX centuries as the instruments of propaganda, applied to reinforcement of national consent. The researchers of the genre are moderate in assessing the present state of the genre, which has recently been influenced by ever changing information technologies. The essential factors are the increase of the speed and the low cost of digital mapping production. From this point of view, the historical mapping is an experimental graphic part of a historical narrative, using the possibilities of the rapid correction of data, playing with scales, projections and perspectives.
