Documenti pittorici nei papiri di età tolemaica: l'affresco e l'encausto nell'archivio di Zenone di Cauno.
I rinvenimenti di papiri e gli ostraka (frammenti di terracotta usati come supporto scrittorio), principalmente in greco, demotico e latino, sono considerati i più interessanti e importanti reperti dell’Egitto di epoca greco-romana, poiché ci tramandano documenti di prima mano, di natura economica, sociale culturale e religiosa di un periodo compreso tra il IV secolo a.C. e il VII secolo d.C. Le collezioni si sono formate soprattutto tra la fine dell’Ottocento e la prima metà del Novecento, periodo in cui i ritrovamenti sono avvenuti fortuitamente o a seguito di scavi più o meno leciti, e una fiorente compravendita di papiri si riversò sul mercato antiquario del Cairo. Un primo cospicua lotto proveniva della antiche città di Krokodilopolis, capitale del Fayyum (l’odierna Medinet El-fayyum) ed Herakleopolis Magna (oggi Ihnasya el-Medina), nel Medio Egitto a sud del Fayyum.

The material evidence for the wax finish on ancient marble statues, known as ganosis, is scarce and controversial, although Greek and Latin sources describe the recipes and cultural value of this treatment. The surface treatment of a colossal Roman head from the Roman theatre of Dougga (Tunisia), dated to the end of the second century CE, is studied by a multi-analytical protocol (video-microscope, cross section, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry of one sample). The results of this physico-chemical analysis and the comparison with ancient recipes, prove the use of ganosis on a Roman statue and explore, for the first time, the application of the recipes described in ancient sources. This result shows the potential of the Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry analysis, detecting at the same time organic and inorganic materials and their stratigraphy, to study the ancient recipes.

Subject of my work are the techniques of ancient Greek painting, in other words the materials and methods employed by ancient painters to produce their works of art. I attempt a brief inspection of the information available on painting techniques, gained through the study of the written sources, the investigation of the extant monuments, the number of which has significantly grew over the last decades, and the modern documentation and analysis methods, which are applied on them to ensure their fullest examination. The structure of my work is the following: In the introductory chapter, general information about ancient Greek painting and its study are given. The first chapter is devoted to ancient pigments, which today are divided into inorganic, organic (dyes) and synthetic. Information about these pigments is mainly derived from ancient written sources and contemporary analysis. In the second chapter the three painting techniques, through which an ancient painting could be produced, are presented: These are tempera (painting on a dry substrate, using an organic binding material), fresco (painting on wet substrate, without a binding material) and encaustic (painting with wax as a binding material). Emphasis is given to the special characteristics of each technique, along with its range of application in ancient painting. Furthermore, a brief reference in the possible protective methods of the painting surface is made. In the third and more extensive chapter, the examined monuments are presented, in the form of a catalogue. My research is confined in the area of Greek mainland. The majority of monuments derives from Macedonia and is dated to late Classic - early Hellenistic period. These are mural painting of macedonian and cist tombs, as well as houses, works on stone (painted grave stele, thrones, klinai etc. with painted decoration) and works on wooden substrate. Their examination is done in a uniform way: at first general information about the monument is given and its painted decoration is briefly described, and then the technical characteristics of this decoration are investigated, regarding the substrate and its preparation, the use of painted or incised preliminary drawing, the pigments used, the stages and special characteristics of the painting procedure and the subject of the painting technique. In the final chapter of my work, a synopsis of the information presented in the previous chapters is attempted, as long as the drawing of some general conclusions and some proposals about some open issues. The presentation of these conclusions follows the way the monuments are examined (1. Substrate and its preparation 2. Preliminary drawing 3. Pigments 4. Painting procedure 5. Painting technique) and in some instances a connection with the paintings of other areas and the sculptural polychromy is seeked.

The paper is dedicated to the icon of the Mother of God in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome. The panel was executed in the encaustic technique, which, together with the characteristics of style, allowed scholars to date the image from the late 6th to the early 8th century. The icon represents the Virgin as Queen, which is conveyed through her vestments that reproduce the dress of a Byzantine Empress. This iconography, generally known as Maria Regina, was widespread in early medieval Rome. For this reason it came to be regarded as a specific Western variant of Marian imagery, which emerged under the direct influence of the popes and served as an expression of their political aspirations. My research is dedicated to the analysis of the icon in the context of Early Byzantine culture. This paper concerns only one of a wide range of issues related to the topic. The iconographic peculiarities of the icon are considered from a new angle, suggesting that the Roman context alone cannot explain its origin. The analysis of the contemporary female imagery and Marian theology indicates that the Trastevere icon was created under the influence of ideas that belonged to a common religious heritage shared by the entire Christian world – ideas that determined the perception of the image of the Mother of God in the Roman icon as Empress, Virgin and Ecclesia.

Roma e il monastero di Santa Caterina sul monte Sinai in Egitto sono i principali centri in cui si conservano le più antiche icone precedenti il periodo iconoclasta, iniziato con l'imperatore bizantino Leone III Isaurico nel 730, durante il quale le immagini sacre furono osteggiate e proibite, richiamando il divieto biblico. Sebbene vengano considerate come testimonianze appartenenti a due diverse aree culturali-esempi di pittura occidentale quelle presenti nelle chiese romane ed espressione della cultura altomedievale di Costantinopoli quelle del Sinai-molti elementi fanno pensare a unica origine. Sono immagini ancora legate alla tradizione e l'influenza ellenistico-romana in quanto, ancora non plasmate e codificate dalle regole iconografiche successive alla fine della contesa iconoclasta nell'843. Appartengono alla tradizione delle icone acheropite, il cui significato letterale equivale a "non dipinte da mano umana", si diffondono all'epoca dell'imperatore Giustiniano (483-565) e sarebbero state create o per un contatto diretto, come ad esempio il volto di Cristo, o per ierofania, manifestazione divina. Le sperimentazioni nel campo delle tecniche artistiche sono uno dei temi più frequentati da quanti hanno commentato i luoghi e le opere legate a Raimondo di Sangro, partecipi di quell'aura di arcano che circonda il personaggio. Realtà storica e fantasia diventano difficili da discernere, e così pure sfug-gono la natura e l'entità delle 'scoperte' realizzate dal Principe. È per questo che acquista importanza il dipinto del museo Cappella Sansevero raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino del pittore romano Giuseppe Pesce (firmato e datato 1757). Il quadro, già donato dal Principe a Carlo di Borbone come saggio della «dipintura colle cere colorate a tempera» di cui si dice «primo inventore», è un raro documento di cultura materiale, nella cui analisi i ritrovati del Sansevero rivelano un'aggiornata parte-cipazione alle ricerche che in quegli anni coinvolgono artisti ed eruditi in tutt'Europa.

Experiments in the field of artistic techniques are one of the favorite themes by those who have commented on the places and works related to Raimondo di Sangro, participating in that aura of arcane that surrounds the character. Historical reality and fantasy become difficult to discern, and so do the nature and the extent of the "discoveries" made by the Prince. This is why the painting of the Museo Cappella Sansevero depicting the Madonna and Child by the Roman painter Giuseppe Pesce (signed and dated 1757) gains importance. The painting, once given by the Prince to Charles of Bourbon as an essay on the «painting with colored waxes in tempera» of which he is called «first inventor», is a rare document of material culture; through its analysis the Sansevero findings reveal a updated participation in research involving artists and scholars throughout Europe in those years.

Art has substance, literally. This substance, or medium,
can take any form, including products manufactured by
fellow animals. Of the world’s animal-derived media, it is
the wax of honey bees (Apis spp.) that has most
profoundly impacted artists, particularly those creating
encaustics. The honey bee is a builder and an architect,
and the wax comb constructed by a society of honey bees
transcends a bodily product; it serves as the substrate
that houses and shelters brood and food, and the platform
for all of the nest activities, including dancing, which can
communicate the location of food to nestmates.

Morto da Feltre pittore di grottesche

Racconta il Vasari: "Morto, pittore da Feltro, il quale fu astratto nella vita come era nel cervello e nelle novità nelle grottesche ch’egli faceva, le quali furono cagione di farlo molto stimare, si condusse a Roma nella sua giovanezza in quel tempo che il Pinturicchio per Alessandro VI dipigneva le camere papali, et in Castel Sant’Angelo, le logge e stanze da basso nel torrione e sopra altre camere".



Morto, così detto per l’abitudine che aveva di esplorare cunicoli e calarsi negli ipogei delle antiche rovine romane dove studiò, disegnò e riprese i motivi delle grottesche, fu uno dei primi divulgatori di questa singolare e stravagante decorazione dalle tinte ardite a cui, Vitruvio nel VII libro del suo famoso trattato De Achitectura si era opposto in maniera energica condannandola come assurda e incoerente.

The phenomenon of combining Egyptian, Greek and Roman elements in the funerary rite of Roman Egypt shows the significant difference between new and old Dynastic burial tradition. Providing new forms of expressions of traditional religious beliefs — vividly painted portraits and shrouds attached to the mummy — the new enriched artistic tradition contributed significantly to native Egyptian culture. The six burial shrouds examined in this paper are typical of the Roman Period in that they exhibit both Greek and Egyptian visual forms conjoined. Most of these shrouds derive from Saqqara necropolis; though the source of the others is unknown, their style and iconography have strong resemblance with those found in Saqqara.

Plinio il Vecchio nella Naturalis Historia afferma categorico: "Non c'è gloria se non per i pittori che hanno dipinto su tavola" (N.H. XXXV, 118). Segue l'elenco degli artisti celebri nelle due tecniche utilizzate nella pittura da cavalletto nel mondo antico: la tempera (a base di sostanze proteiche come uovo, colle, caseina ecc.) e l'encausto; vale a dire cera d'api mescolata con pigmenti e stesa sul supporto pittorico. L'encausto classico, come hanno rivelato le analisi scientifiche, prevedeva l'uso di cera d'api vergine o cera punica; cioè di un sapone di cera ottenuto mediante trattamento: la cera d'api veniva resa solubile e miscibile con l'acqua grazie all'aggiunta di potassa o carbonato di sodio (il natron di cui parla Plinio nella N.H.). "Prendi acqua di alto mare e aggiungila alla cera con un po' di natrom, poi falla bollire, quindi estrai con una spatola la parte più bianca della cera che affiora e versala in un altro vaso che ne contenga una parte fredda e ponila nuovamente sul fuoco. Quando il vaso si raffredderà, ripeti l'azione per tre volte, e infine mettila ad asciugare sui graticci all'aperto sino a quando il sole e la luna la renderà candida" (N.H.lib. XXI, 83). Il composto ottenuto e mescolato ai colori poteva e può essere usato a freddo e successivamente fissato a caldo accostandolo a una fonte di calore per ottenere effetti fluidi, densi e pastosi o in rilievo. Le origini dell'encausto e le relazioni con le botteghe dei pittori-bronzisti del V secolo a.C.. secondo  la Naturalis Historia di Plinio il Vecchio.
I recenti restauri dei bronzi di Riace hanno permesso di ottenere dati certi sulla tecnica di fusione antica delle due celebri statue. Una goccia di bronzo, causata dalla colatura della cera utilizzata per la fusione all’interno della coscia del bronzo B, ha permesso di stabilire con certezza che l’antico guerriero è stato realizzato con la tecnica indiretta a cera persa. Questa conferma può far luce su un argomento assai dibattuto e controverso, su cui pende ancora un velo di mistero: le origini della pittura a encausto.

El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico presenta la exhibición René Santos: el grado cero de la imagen, con el propósito de comprender el trasfondo intelectual y el método de trabajo de este artista. Son escasas las obras de Santos en colecciones privadas y en museos, y su figura no ha sido suficientemente reconocida, por lo que esta exhibición pone de relieve la importancia de su legado y de su particular iconografía.
Abstract: The Museo de Arte de Puerto presents the exhibition René Santos: el grado cero de la imagen [René Santos: the degree zero of the image], with the purpose of understanding the intellectual background and working method of this artist. The works of Santos in private collections and museums are scarce, and his figure has not been sufficiently recognized, so this exhibition highlights the importance of his legacy and his particular iconography.

Deforestation in Thailand results not only in the loss of a complex ecological system but also in a reduced visual aesthetic due to a less complex landscape, for example, the dense labyrinth of the forest compared with the open simplicity of an orchard. Increasingly forests are being replaced by vast plantations of a very limited number of plant species. These plantations also require intervention in order to sustain the cropping compared with the natural health of forest soils. The land was abstracted, the landscape became absence of the labyrinth of the forest, introduced instead orchards. "Under Erasure" is a method of creating visual language that can be used for encoding. A technique of erasing of existing work and replacing it with new context is not a new method, often use in literature to shown in writing methods as mistakes of the author, but nevertheless it needs to be in the sentence in order to complete the thought but still prevail the rule of grammar. The author attempt to use "Under Erasure" to create and new visual vocabularies by usage of the imaginary and unorthodox materials and preexisting image/form/information to create paintings with landscape content.

El proyecto artístico ‘El lugar de la Beca de Pintores Pensionados del de Paisaje de Segovia ante la crisis ecológico-social.’ es una investigación sobre el arte ecológico con la pintura de paisaje como técnica para investigar las cuestiones del paisaje cultural y su relación con la crisis ecológico-social a través de la Beca de Los Pintores Pensionados del Paisaje de Segovia de la Real Academia de Historia y Arte de San Quirce. This paper is concerned with Early Byzantine practice of complementing icons with frames bearing extensive inscriptions. Many surviving panel paintings (6th–8th c.) preserve indications of a frame once set around the rim. The surviving examples from Sinai and Rome represent unique evidence for the use of epigraphy on portable religious objects in the Early Byzantine period. The presence of textual frames transformed the earliest icons into ‘speaking images’, a feature often omitted in our discussions of Early Byzantine imagery. The comprehensive study of these phenomena reveal that the use of the written word in concomitance with religious imagery was from the beginning one of the fundamental characteristics of Byzantine art.

Nel vasto mare del Fayyum, lo storico dell’arte può riflettere e indagare non solo i rapporti culturali e la pittura greco-romana con quella dell’antico Egitto attraverso i ritratti di mummie; ma ripercorrere le origini delle più antiche icone cristiane. “Eikon” è un termine greco che indica in senso storico-artistico un pannello di legno con un soggetto sacro destinato al culto.

This essay traces the significance of American artist Jasper Johns' (*1930) choice of the wax-based medium of encaustic for the creation of "Flag" (1954-55). More specifically, it demonstrates how the alleged switch to this unusual technique exactly at the time when he set out to produce this major work also served a rhetorical function, underlining the importance of "Flag" as a completely fresh start in his practice.
