This article first provides some background from the settlement history of Canada and defines some helpful terms for talking about Canadian English (CE). Next, it outlines some features of CE vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and speech. Finally, it introduces some helpful resources that ESL/EFL teachers and their students may wish to consult for further information about CE and English usage in Canada.

Eric Wittkower founded McGill University’s transcultural psychiatry unit in 1955. One year later, he started the first international newsletter in this academic field, which became (and remains) the main journal today: Transcultural Psychiatry. However, at the beginning of his career Wittkower gave no signs that he would be interested in social sciences and psychiatry; he originally trained as a specialist in internal medicine in Berlin. This paper describes the historical context of the post-war period, when Wittkower founded a research unit at McGill University with an American anthropologist, Jacob Fried. Using archival material from McGill, I focus on the history of scientific networks and the circulation of knowledge, particularly on the exchanges between the French- and English-speaking academic cultures in North America and Europe. Because the history of transcultural psychiatry is a transnational history par excellence, but also a literature of exile, this leads necessarily to the important question of the reception of this academic field abroad.

Infrastructure threatens to lock-in societies to fossil fuels, unless something is done about it now. This is because infrastructure lasts for such a long-time, meaning that any infrastructure built or rebuilt now will last well into the 21st century – even until the end of the century in some cases. Consequently, there is a need to integrate climate change, especially adaptation, into infrastructure now or societies will be left with infrastructure designed around an unsustainable socio-technical system (e.g. combustion engines, roads, suburbanization, etc.). Such change is conceptualized in the literature as a sustainability transition. However, any attempts at such transitions have to address the materialities of infrastructure systems (e.g. physical form, environmental context, etc.). In this paper I develop the concept of socio-material systems and apply it to transport infrastructure in Ontario, Canada.

Essay included in the the anthology The Genius of Language, edited by Wendy Lesser. Fifteen bilingual authors address about the subject of language - the one they grew up with and the English in which they write. This essay looks at the author's bilingual education in English and Greek, providing a sense of self that is sometimes uncertain, other times humorous and finally liberating.

That is, until Watch Magazine exploded onto the streets of Toronto and into the halls of the city’s high schools. I was hired by Youth Culture to be the Editor-in-Chief for this unique business: a magazine staffed by high school students but covering the wider worlds of pop music, culture, fashion, politics and the arts.

American revolutionary break, under the influence of 18 th century political ideas of natural right, and the consequent influence that this revolution has had on all new world nations, has meant that Canadian political culture has often been articulated in contrast to the pervasive enlightenment individualism and a-historism of the United States. It has been commonplace to describe the different character of Canadian identity from the United States with reference to the greater communitarian component of Canadian political culture. Whether this communitarianism is attributed to the influence of a nonrevolutionary political tradition, Loyalism, a harsh winter climate, French-English accomodation, it is widely accepted that, "America reflects the influence of its classically liberal, Whig, individualistic, antistatist, populist, ideological origins. Canada … can still be seen as Tory-mercantilist, group-oriented, statist, deferential to authority-a 'socialist monarchy,' to use Robertson Davies' phrase"(Lipset, 1989: 212). The communitarian emphasis has been matched by a particular manner of dealing with cultural diversity. Canadian philosophy has been characterized by what Leslie Armour has called a "rationalist pluralism" in which "either a plurality of views can be justified or a new synthesis of apparently conflicting views can be found" (1997: 4). Este artigo tem como objetivo iniciar uma discussão a respeito da imigração sul-norte a partir do exemplo do recente fluxo de brasileiros para o Canadá, mais especificamente, para Toronto. Um país formado por imigrantes e ainda sem uma identidade consolidada, o Canadá acolhe, na única cidade do planeta onde a maioria dos moradores são estrangeiros e não dominam fluentemente a língua nacional, a maior comunidade brasileira do mundo, fora de países de língua portuguesa, em números proporcionaia população. Quem são esses brasileiros e porque escolheram o Canadá? Essas perguntam começam a ser respondidas neste artigo.

In 1996 Id Magazine, an Ontario, Canada biweekly, was expanding and needed to improve the quality of its journalism, while making the difficult shift to being a more consistently professional offering. I was hired as Features Editor and set about quickly assembling a team of investigative journalists. My strategy involved targetting stories overlooked by Canadian newspapers and TV news. This led to a number of firsts, including an extensive investigation into Canada’s flourishing sex industry, the government’s addiction to casinos, unearthing a plot by neo-nazis to infiltrate Ontario high schools with hate rock, university students' catastrophic debt culture, reporting from the streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Canada’s UN mission, and probing the government’s public services privatisation plans (including being invited to debate this topic on CBC TV’s programme, Face Off).

Le présent article propose une réflexion sur le rapport contemporain qu’entretiennent les Anglo-Québécois avec les Églises unie et anglicane. Les principaux résultats d’une série d’analyses quantitatives concernant l’évolution d’indicateurs de religiosité depuis les années 1970 (l’appartenance religieuse et les baptêmes) sont détaillés pour la population à l’étude. Ces résultats sont aussi mis en parallèle avec des recherches similaires portant sur les Franco-Québécois ainsi que sur les Anglo-Canadiens à l’extérieur du Québec. Il s’agit d’interpréter le tout à l’aide d’un cadre théorique admettant l’existence de voies différentielles de la sécularisation en dialogue, notamment avec les travaux de David Martin, expert international de la question religio-identitaire.

Parce qu’il conteste une ribambelle d’idées reçues, ce livre sera discuté. À l’encontre de ce que l’on dit, les jeunes Québécois s’intéressent à l’histoire de leur société. Ils sont capables de visions d’ensemble du parcours de leur collectivité – visions politiques soit dit en passant! Et ils se montrent fiduciaires de l’expérience historique du Nous – ou plutôt des Nous québécois, selon qu’ils sont «anglos» ou «francos».

Il y a plus : le nouveau cours Histoire et éducation à la citoyenneté ne dépolitise pas les élèves. Les grandes références nationales continuent d’agir sur la raison historique des jeunes. Et l’histoire du destin tragique du peuple québécois, chez les francophones tout au moins, n’est pas en voie d’être remplacée par une vision déconflictualisée et multiculturaliste du passé collectif.

Tirant profit d’un corpus original amassé sur une dizaine d’années et formé de près de 3500 phrases produites par de jeunes Québécois invités à résumer l’histoire du Québec dans une brève formule, l’auteur nous entraîne au coeur d’une fascinante enquête sur la conscience historique de la nouvelle génération. De ce travail pionnier, il tire des préceptes revivifiants pour l’avenir de l’enseignement de l’histoire au Québec ou ailleurs.
