Enviromental Studies

This edited volume introduces highlights of the academic interests and research activities of a number of staff at Unitec’s Department of Communication Studies, demonstrating the breadth and scope of the engagement of this academic collective with contemporary communication issues.  Edited by Giles Dodson and Evangelia Papoutsaki, it is clear from the work that communication in Aotearoa New Zealand remains complex and continually under negotiation, as this country continues to be formed and reformed by processes of cultural encounter, by political and institutional change and by voices seeking to assert, to contest and to claim their presence – to represent and to be represented within contemporary New Zealand.

Resumo: A partir das lentes da joint discipline que transpassa categorias de análise das disciplinas do Direito Internacional e das Relações Internacionais, a presente pesquisa radiografa a geografia e a arquitetura institucional da cooperação ambiental brasileira na América do Sul. Para radiografar a geografia, a pesquisa indaga onde esta cooperação está localizada, o que ela estabelece e quais são os atores cujos interesses a envolvem. Ao investigar a arquitetura, foca-se em entender como ela operacionaliza o seu conteúdo normativo, o que envolve compreender o papel do direito internacional em operar políticas públicas ambientais transversais a diversos Estados. A exploração documental analisa os regimes bilaterais na matéria, e, através de levantamento, sugere que esta cooperação é descentralizada e difusa, ao mesmo tempo que inova no seu modus operandi.

Abstract: From the lenses of the joint discipline that cuts across categories of analysis of the disciplines of International Law and International Relations, this investigation radiographs the geography and the institutional architecture of the Brazilian environmental cooperation in South America. By analyzing its geography, the study inquires where this cooperation is situated, what it establishes and which are the actors whose interests involve it. By investigating its architecture, it focuses on understanding how it operationalizes its normative content, which involves understanding the role of international law in operating environmental public policies that are transversal to different States. The documentary exploration analyzes bilateral regimes in this sector, and, through survey, suggests that this cooperation is decentralized and diffuse, while innovating in its modus operandi.

Resumen: Con  base  en  los  lentes  de  la  joint  discipline  que  atraviesa  categorías  de  análisis  de  las  disciplinas  del  Derecho  Internacional  y  Relaciones  Internacionales,  esta  investigación  examina la geografía y la arquitectura institucional de la cooperación ambiental brasileña en América del Sur. Para radiografiar la geografía, la investigación se pregunta dónde se ubica esta cooperación, qué establece y cuáles son los actores cuyos intereses la involucran. Al investigar la arquitectura, se enfoca en comprender cómo opera su contenido normativo, lo que implica comprender el papel del derecho internacional en la operación de políticas públicas ambientales en varios Estados. La exploración documental analiza los regímenes bilaterales en la materia y, a través de un levantamiento, sugiere que esta cooperación es descentralizada y difusa, al mismo tiempo que innova en su modus operandi.

Bu çalışmanın amacı fen bilimleri öğretim programında yer alan “enerji kaynakları ve geri dönüşüm” konusunun öğretiminde, jigsaw tekniği kullanılmasının öğrencilerin akademik başarıları ve fene yönelik tutumlarına etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden eşitlenmemiş gruplara ön test-son test uygulamasına dayalı yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemi 8. Sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 70 öğrenciden (28 kız-42 erkek) oluşmaktadır Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Akademik Başarı Testi, Fen Bilimlerine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ve Fen Öğrenme Yaklaşımlarına Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler, MANCOVA ve  ANCOVA  teknikleri  ile  analiz  edilmiştir. Araştırmanın  sonucunda;  jigsaw tekniğini içeren  tasarımın öğrencilerin akademik başarılarını olumlu yönde etkilediği, fen bilimleri dersi ve fen öğrenme yaklaşımlarına yönelik tutum son testleri üzerinde ise anlamlı bir etkisi olmadığı belirlenmiştir.

Industrial development in the State of Qatar is taking place at an unprecedented rate. Such development is putting the environment at the risk, threatening ecosystem services and biological diversity. While Qatar is currently developing the legislation, regulatory bodies, and management agencies for successful ecosystem management and conservation efforts, the full implementation of these protective measures has yet to be achieved. This is in part due to a lack of scientific expertise and trained personnel as well as the early stage of environmental development in the country. While strides have been taken by the State of Qatar, the question remains whether they can be implemented in a timely fashion to ensure that current and future development projects support the country’s goal of sustainable development.

La presente práctica sobre potencial maderable de la especie Maquira coriácea “capinuri” se realizó en la comunidad nativa Yahuma I zona, en la provincia Mariscal Ramón Castilla, Loreto-Perú. El objetivo fue determinar el número de árboles y el potencial maderable por clase diamétrica de la especie M. coriácea. En el censo forestal se tomó información biométrica de todos los árboles comerciales con  ≥ a 40 cm de DAP de la especie M. coriácea. Se evaluaron en total 10 parcelas de muestreo de 0,5 ha (10 m x 500 m).
La distribución del número de árboles por clase diamétrica indica que el mayor número de árboles se presenta en la clase diamétrica de 80 a 89 cm con 73 árboles (19,11%); mientras que el menor valor muestra la clase diamétrica comprendido entre 130 a 139 cm y 140 a 149 cm ambos con un árbol por clase (1,22%). La distribución del volumen de árboles por clase diamétrica señala que la mayor concentración de volumen muestra la clase diamétrica de 90 a 99 cm con 459,35 m3 (21,60%); mientras que el menor valor reporta la clase diamétrica de 40 a 49 cm con 3,48 m3 (0,16%).
