Epitalamio

The Helen portrayed in Seneca's Troades is a character marked by a limited dramatic prominence and by an inconstant psychology. Despite of this, she presents herself as a figure especially aware of her long ‘literary history’. The oxymoron ‘hymen funestus’ seems to display and summarize the paradoxical complexity that affects the myth of Helen and, on other hand, it formally highlights the paradox, which is stressed by Helen’s role as an auspex of a false marriage. The insistence on the vocabulary of the marriage rite recalls the Greek tragedy, in particular the topic of marriage-to-death. Nevertheless, what most distinguishes the Helen depicted by Seneca is the sentiment of exclusion and painful isolation. It is the perception of the hostility of both Trojan and Greeks, in her impossibility to take part in the fate of the conquerers as much as in that of the conquered people.
L'Elena delle Troades senecane, anche se figura caratterizzata da  non ampio rilievo drammatico e da una psicologia non sempre coerente, si presenta come un personaggio consapevole soprattutto della sua lunga 'storia letteraria': la iunctura ossimorica hymen funestus sembra voler enucleare da subito e in estrema sintesi tutta la paradossale complessità del mito di Elena, che arriva a Seneca dal teatro greco attraverso le riscritture romane, sottolineandone anche formalmente il paradosso concettuale, che si esalta con il suo ruolo di auspex di false nozze. La presenza insistita del lessico del rito matrimoniale sembra sottintendere una fitta rete di rimandi alla tragedia greca, in particolare testimoniando la precisa volontà di suggerire il tema topico delle "nozze di morte". La cifra interpretativa che comunque maggiormente caratterizza l'Elena senecana è il sentimento di esclusione e di doloroso isolamento, è l'ostilità che essa percepisce da parte dei Troiani e dei Greci nella sua impossibilità di condividere il destino dei vincitori come dei vinti.

Estudio de dos Cadernos de diversas curiosidades donde se acumulan elementos dispares que sólo se articulan en su relación con la reina Catarina de Bragança (1638-1705): sus bodas con Carlos II de Inglaterra explican el componente epitalámico (que amalgama a su vez poemas celebratorios de la dimensión política del casamiento con abundante poesía erótica y escatológica); documentos sobre la destitución de su hermano Afonso VI de Portugal; poesía y documentos sobre el apoyo de la reina a los judeoconversos portugueses; recetas de interés para las artes decorativas, reglas para pasatiempos y juegos de palabras. La yuxtaposición de estos elementos se hace de modo que entran en diálogo, produciendo lecturas distintas de las que tienen por separado.

A study of two Curiosity chapbooks that bring together most disparate elements articulated only in relation to Queen Catherine of Bragança (1638-1705): her wedding to Charles II of England justify the presence of the epitalamic components (celebratory poems on the political dimensions of the event, erotic and eschatologic poetry); documents relative to the destitution of her brother, Afonso VI of Portugal; poetry and documents on the queen's support for Portuguese Jews and converts; formulae and instructions of interest to decorative arts, pastimes and plays with words. By been yuxtaposed, all these elements engage in a dialogue that allow readings different from the meanings each entry has separately.

Fernando Pessoa's objective, in writing the five main English books of poems, is to represent the part of Orpheus which promises the reader the salvation of its soul and eternal life; he takes the reader by the hand and rescues him from Hell and sin; journeying through a catharsis of love and Hermetic philosophy, we reach Divinity with him.
The five poems are linked together through layers of subtext; themes and structures that follow through, from one poem to the next, on the piggy-back of the reader's subconcious ego and the author's masterly intention. Sin and taboo form the essential elements of a metaphysical game, which Pessoa uses to play with us, to move us into a different reality, which will elevate our souls onto the divine plane.
Pessoa sees himself as the teacher of Humanity, the Messiah of Portuguese culture, into which the ignorant peasant will shed his armour of prejudice and will bask in the nakedness of his soul and the glory of knowledge.
This Portuguese Orpheus begins his phylosophical instruction by forcing us, the reader and the voyeur, into the spotlight of our own childish hypocresy and iniquity. Epithalamium is the stage for voyaristic pleasure in the sorroundings of Sacred Comunion and Holy Sacrament. Thus caught red-handed in his private fantasy, the reader recoils in shame and embarrassment, which Pessoa then uses as positive energy to carry the reader into the deeper realms of love and alternative thought. Thus encountering the distant, but no less poignant, homosexual love story in Antinous, the reader further recoils into his own soul before a blushing act of borderline necrophilia. Newly confused and ashamed, but having experienced the most beautiful and heart-rendering example of selfless love, the reader is presented with the only real alternative to emotion, i.e. the equalizer of all men, Death, in Inscriptions. With Mad Fiddler, the reader experiences music and faith through the playfulness and rythym of modernist verse. Through layers and sublayers of meaning, we encounter the Hermetic Philosophy that will finally take us onto the metaphysics of 35 Sonnets and, ultimateley, our soul's growth and maturity.

Título: "Hoy es el sacro y venturoso día": un centón epitalámico de Vera Tassis. Title: "Hoy es el sacro y venturoso día": a Epitalamic Centon of Vera Tassis. Resumen: Este artículo estudia la hibridación entre el epitalamio y la técnica centonaria apreciable en un poema laudatorio de Diego Juan de Vera Tassis dedicado a las nupcias de Carlos II y María Luisa de Borbón (1679).

Este artículo analiza un pasaje inserto en el epitalamio de las Soledades de Luis de Góngora (I, 815-817), atendiendo a la recepción de motivos literarios greco-latinos en la literatura neolatina y vernácula. La mención de la figura mítica de Níobe en un fragmento del coro nupcial asume la función oratoria de un exemplum a contrario, ya que si bien exalta la fecundidad de la reina de Tebas, al mismo tiempo previene a la novia contra los riesgos de la soberbia, la impiedad y la jactancia. Para iluminar el sentido ejemplar que asume aquel personaje femenino, se examinan de cerca varios epigramas y emblemas sobre el mismo motivo, atendiendo a la advertencia moral que portan.

IX), by ClaudianRobson Rodrigues ClaudinoUniversidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Recife, Pernambuco / Brasilrobbiehashi@gmail.comhttps://orcid.org/0000-0001-8951-6465Resumo: O  presente  trabalho  apresenta  uma  tradução  realizada  em  versos  livres  do  prefácio  de  um  epitalâmio  do  poeta  alexandrino  Cláudio  Claudiano.  O  texto,  encontrado  no  grupo  dos  poemas  maiores,  que  antecede  o  epitalâmio  propriamente  dito, foi composto para celebrar a união entre o imperador Honório, filho de Teodósio, o Grande, que governava a parte ocidental do Império Romano na metade do século IV d.C, e Maria, filha do general Estilicão, tutor de Honório. No texto, temos uma forma de alegoria, com a qual o poeta irá estabelecer uma relação entre o matrimônio do imperador e as bodas de Peleu e Tétis, pais do herói Aquiles. Além da tradução, acompanhada  de  seu  texto  original,  o  trabalho  contém  uma  breve  contextualização  histórica  acerca  do  autor  e  notas  explicativas,  que  nortearão  o  leitor  ao  explicar  as  diversas figuras mitológicas e locais que são mencionados ao longo do poema.

Durante los siglos XVII y XVIII se compusieron en las cortes europeas los conocidos como epitalamios o himeneos, un género de literatura nupcial realizado en el contexto de las grandes bodas regias con un propósito claramente propagandístico. Con este fina las imágenes grabadas e incluso literarias fueron clave a la hora de difundir las ideas de prosperidad, abundancia y fertilidad que conllevaba la unión de dos dinastías regias a través del vínculo conyugal. Entre las imágenes que remitían a esa idea de la riqueza y de la abundancia varias son recurrentes en estos epitalamios, que serán el hilo conductor de nuestro análisis.
