Etudes Celtiques

Abstract : The personnal archives of Joseph Vendryes (1975-1960) kept in Collège de France are an important source for the history of linguistic and Celtic studies in France. Put in order and listed recently, these archives contain work notes by the scholar about Celtic languages dating from the late 19th century to 1960. This article is an introduction to the reading of these archives, with a sketch of their history and of their main specificities. The inventory of Joseph Vendryes' archives, published in this article, will enable interested scholars to orientate themselves amongst these documents.

Résumé : Les archives privées de Joseph Vendryes (1875-1960) conservées au Collège de France constituent une source importante pour l’histoire de la linguistique et des études celtiques en France. Classé depuis peu, ce fonds d’archives contient des notes de travail du savant sur les langues celtiques datant de la fin du XIXe siècle à 1960. Cet article constitue une introduction à la lecture de ces archives : il donne une esquisse de leur histoire et présente leurs principales spécificités. L’inventaire du fonds Joseph Vendryes, publié dans cet article, permet aux chercheurs intéressés de s’orienter parmi ces documents.

Did druids really exist? Did Celts perform human sacrifice? The aim of this paper is to scrutinise our sources on Celtic religion. We can see that our sources are not only unreliable, but they were also consciously used to manipulate the readers’ image of Celts. Rome’s long-standing fear of the Galli had made way for a fear of the druids by the 1st century A.D. The Romans were increasingly interested in the Celts/Galli in the 1st century B.C., catalysed by Caesar campaigning in Gaul and Britain. But despite first-hand knowledge, authors used obsolete topoi. The reasons for this changed through time and the ‘Celts’ became increasingly instrumentalised. This leads us to another important question: can we use these Graeco-Roman sources for the study of Celtic religion? Are the information on deities, rituals, priesthoods, re-incarnation and Pythagoreanism reliable? These are some of the questions addressed in this paper.

The ‘Celtic episode’ of the prehistoric Sanok region should be associated with a group of
colonists from the south who, during phase LT C, used the local brine springs to produce salt and
supply it to the population of the Upper Tisa River basin. For now, no finds definitely associated
with phases LT B or LT D have been discovered in the region. The settlers probably relied on
both agriculture and animal husbandry to sustain their communities. It seems unlikely they were
able to produce any food surpluses, considering the unfavourable climate and poor soil conditions.
When the expansion of Dacian tribes to the south of the Carpathians began to cause shifts in the
political landscape and the trade routes’ network, the San River Valley cultural centre lost its
economic significance and entered a period of decline. Presumably, some of the population may have
migrated north into the more fertile lands, while others might have returned to the areas of their
origin. According to the available data, there seems to be no clear continuity between the La Tène
occupation and the oldest Przeworsk culture finds dated to the end of the early pre-Roman period.

À l'Ouest de l'Europe, dans la mer celtique et plus loin dans l'Atlantique, une géographie celte de l'Autre Monde peut être identifiée. Dans cette géographie l'île Brasil est un élément de mythologie celte passé à un folklore chrétien. Nous essayons de comprendre comment le mythe d'une île de la mythologie celte, en l'occurrence l'île Brasil, ait passé, probablement, d'une littérature orale ou écrite perdue à la littérature et à la cartographie médiévales. Pour cela il nous faut travailler dans le champ difficile de l'hagiographie celtique et celto-latine en ayant aussi comme matériau d'analyse et comparaison les récits mythologiques, plus particulièrement les immarama: narratives de circunavegation des héros celtiques.
