Gdańsk

Nicholas of Hohenstein (1350-1420) - he studied in Vienna. From around 1370, he was in Gdańsk. Here, as the first chaplain, he founded Elendenhof (refuge for the poor). In 1390 he made a pilgrimage with Dorothea of Montau to Rome. After the transformation of Elendenhof in Elisabethhospital (St. Elizabeth's Hospital), Nicholas joined the Teutonic Order and became the first hospitalist. This is confirmed by the sources from 1416.

Records from Gdańsk and Kwidzyn districts and the Chief Administrative Committee of the Province of West Prussia concerning the dissolution of monasteries carried out in the first half of the 19th century

Summary

The current paper presents the documentation concerning the monastery dissolution executed by the Prussian authorities in the first half of the 19th century in the territory of the contemporary Province of West Prussia (Provinz Westpreußen). The basic dissolution documentation was kept by the administrative district offices in Kwidzyn and Gdańsk (Regierung Marienwerder, Regierung Danzig). More general data was stored in the office of the Chief Administrative Committee of the Province of West Prussia at Gdańsk (later Province of Prussia), while the most general information was collected by the Ministry of Religious, Educational and Medical Affairs in Berlin (Ministerium der Geistlichen, Unterrichts- und Medicinalangelegenheiten), later Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kultusministerium). The material documenting the dissolution encompasses general records (acta generalia), which include directives and instructions for the enforcement of the suppression, as well as detailed records (acta specialia), which present the process of dissolution of particular monasteries. The documentation of monastery dissolutions offers extremely valuable data since it does not describe only the dissolution process itself, but also comprises records from the period following the formal suppression of monasteries, presenting – among other issues – the subsequent fates of their buildings and churches.
The most extensive documentation was produced in administrative district offices. It comprises not only regular correspondence between officials responsible for the preparation and execution of the dissolution of a given monastery, but also original suppression reports, inventories of property, church furnishings and equipment, and sometimes library catalogues. The state of preservation of dissolution records concerning particular monasteries varies, and not infrequently the only extant sources are the cardboard-bound archival units stored in the records of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, held at Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. Hence, full information on the originally produced dissolution documentation at particular administrative levels can only be provided by old inventories of the mentioned in the article fonds. Drawing on the information they contain and on present inventories helped to compile data concerning the archival units created as a result of that. In this way, it was possible to reconstruct a register of records documenting the dissolution process in the first half of the 19th century in the territory of the contemporary Province of West Prussia, taking into account also the sources that have been lost.

Jeremias Falck (c. 1605/09–1677) is considered to be the greatest engraver of early modern times working in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Graphical representa- tions of  ower forms constitute a signi cant part of his oeuvre. So far they have not been of special interest to researchers, therefore it is worth giving them more attention now. It seems necessary to look at the existing attributions to estimate the real number of Falck’s works on this subject, and to formally analyse various prints. It is also necessary to critically approach the questions of the original prints, later editions, and copies.
Up to date researchers have recorded selected  ower representations, without referring to the information in the only catalogue raisonné of Falck’s works by Block, who attributed to him up to 98 compositions on the subject. Only by compar- ing prints from the Polish museums with various collections abroad the answer to the question how many  ower arrangements were actually created by Jeremias Falck can be provided.
Falck’s authorship of the series Novae et exquisitae FLORUM ICONES has been con rmed. It is also highly likely that he elaborated most of the plates of the series Verscheyde Nieuwe TULPEN.

conclude that Falck was not only the engraver, but also the author of the composition (inventor). Flowers in his works do not map a particular set of a botanical collection, but are a recommendation for an artistic representation of the plant.  ey could have been a kind of a template for painters, and at the same time objects d’art for collectors.  anks to their artistic qualities, perfect workmanship, and attention to the highest editorial standards, Falck’s  ower engravings became desirable works in the art mar- ket, copied by other designers and reprinted by other publishers.
e analysis of the preserved prints linked to Falck can also lead to a number of general conclusions on the functioning of the market for graphic art in the 17th cen- tury. Florilegia were usually formed in series containing a few to a dozen composi- tions. Herbaria’s cards could circulate in the form of a compact collection of a few series together, but also in smaller folders or even as loose cards.  e study shows that they were particularly popular in 17th-century France and the Netherlands.  e increase in production, mainly of the copies of previous cycles, occurred in the 1670s and lasted until the early 18th century. Falck and Vauquer were copied by Gerard Valck, Nicolaes Visscher and many others.

Ale portrety to nie tylko wierna rejestracja rysów – to także narzędzie kreacji wizerunku, gloryfikacji, autopromocji i walki politycznej. Potencjał sztuki portretowej dobrze rozumieli gdańszczanie zamawiający swoje podobizny u najwybitniejszych artystów swego czasu.
Książka prezentuje portrety tworzone od ok. 1420 r. po koniec XVII w., będącego
apogeum dokonań gdańskich portrecistów z Danielem Schultzem i Andreasem Stechem na czele. Gdańskie portrety zostały ukazane na szerokim tle kulturowo-społecznym. Szczegółowe omówienie renesansowej filozofii człowieka pozwoliło na prześledzenie obecności idei ramowych w gdańskiej twórczości artystycznej i analizę skomplikowanej ikonografii portretów.
Zakres tematyczny obejmuje związki portretu i przyjaźni oraz zagadnienie portretów-podarunków, odniesienia portretów do kwestii władzy oraz do pożądanej w omawianym okresie wizji rodziny, wpływ ideału dworzanina na sposób prezentacji modela, obecność wątków wskazujących na identyfikację modeli z filozofią neostoicką, portrety, w których podkreślono melancholię portretowanych, wreszcie zrekonstruowano „galerie portretowe”, które ozdabiały m.in.
Ratusz Głównomiejski, Bibliotekę Rady Miejskiej oraz zakrystie gdańskich kościołów.

PL: Artykuł omawia historię kościoła grodowego (2 poł. XII/XIII w.) w Gdańsku i relikty architektoniczne, odkryte w Gdańsku po II wojnie światowej, które łączono z tą budowlą. Wskazano na niejednorodność zachowanych detali kamiennych (baz) oraz rozbieżności w ich chronologii. Poparto tezę K. Jasińskiego łączącego kościół grodowy z wezwaniem mariackim, wskazując przy tym, że rozbiórka świątyni w trakcie wznoszenia przez krzyżaków zamku konwentualnego (lata 30. XIV w.) zbiegła się z nadaniem patrocinium Najświętszej Marii Panny farze zakładanego wówczas Głównego Miasta (1343).

EN:The article discusses the history of the burg church (2nd half of the 12th / 13th centuries) in Gdańsk and the architectural relics discovered in Gdańsk after World War II, which were connected with this building. The heterogeneity of the preserved stone details (bases) and discrepancies in their chronology was indicated. There was supported The thesis of prof. K. Jasiński, linking the castle church with the invocation of St. Mary, which stated that the demolition of the temple during the construction of the conventual castle by the Teutonic Knights (1330s) coincided with the granting of the patrocinium of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the parish church of the then established Main Town (1343).

St. Nicholas Church in Elbląg, next to St. Mary's Church, was one of the most important music centers of this city. As a result of the great fire of the church on April 26, 1777, the parish organ was also damaged. After many adventures related to the reconstruction of the great temple, the instrument worthy of this place was built only in the years 1819-1821 by the organ builder Christian Ephraim Ahrendt from Gdańsk. It was the last great monument to the organ building of the Gdansk school. Despite the financial difficulties of the Old Town parish, it was renovated and rebuilt during the 19th century. On the occasion of the construction of a new church tower in 1906-1907, the construction of new organs was also planned. The projects prepared by the Wittek organ company from Elbląg were not implemented also due to financial reasons. It was only in 1926 that Bruno Goebel's organ-building workshop from Königsberg built a new instrument with the Ahrendt'case, with 53 stops, distributed between three manual and one pedal sections. Until their destruction on February 2, 1945, they were the largest organs in the Diocese od Ermland.

Chapels or A Chapel?
On the Complex History of the Chapel(s) of St. Bartholomew and St. Hedwig in St. Mary’s Church in Gdańsk and their Significance for Research on Medieval Decorative Elements

According to the findings of the research into the history of St. Mary’s Church in Gdańsk, in its eastern part, behind the main altar, three liturgical centres operated in the Middle Ages: the Chapels of the Holy Sepulchre and of St. Bartholomew, which divided the wide architectural space on the axis of the temple, as well as the Chapel of St. Hedwig, located to the south of them. In the latter, a set of wall paintings and a reredos have survived to the present day, the aspects of which have been analysed mainly in relation to the scanty information on the history of this chapel. The example of the decoration of a chapel referred to as ‘Chapel of St. Hedwig’ shows how important, from the point of view of historical and artistic research, it is to use written sources, both those contemporary to the created works of art, and those from a later period. An in-depth analysis of various source materials related to the history of the chapels
mentioned above, especially documents related to the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, founded in 1451, has made it possible to establish that in fact there were formerly only two chapels behind the main altar: The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre (later also called the Chapel of St. Gertrude) and – on the southern side – the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, which as early as at the beginning of the 16th century was commonly referred to
as the Chapel of St. Hedwig. Putting this issue in order will make it easier to analyse the objects found in the Chapel of St. Bartholomew/Hedwig in a more comprehensive manner – as a group of works that are the effect of a more uniform concept, and it will enable a more precise dating of the works, which in turn may serve as a starting point for further research into the artistic environment of mid-15th century Gdańsk.

Streszczenie: Druga połowa XVIII w. to czas wzmożonego zainteresowania historią naturalną w Koronie i na Litwie, w tym zainteresowania florą i fauną rodzimą. Należy jednak pamiętać, że historia naturalna rozwijała się znacznie wcześniej w niemieckojęzycznych prowincjach dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Jednym z najważniejszych botaników drugiej połowy XVII w. był gdańszczanin Jacob Breyne, który opracowywał niewydany drukiem 'Wirydarz roślin kaszubskich i pomorskich'. Na podstawie zachowanych exsiccatów z kolekcji zachodnioeuropejskich zostanie odtworzona częściowa lista roślin, które miały zostać omówione w 'Wirydarzu'. Pokażemy także, jak obiekty naturalistyczne z Pomorza i Kaszub krążyły między Europą Środkową a Zachodnią.

Summary

The late medieval wills of Gdańsk’s and Elbląg’s ruling elites

The paper presents the closer discussion of last will documents drawn up by representatives of the ruling elites in Gdańsk (German: Danzig) Main City and Elbląg (German: Elbing) Old Town in the late Middle Ages, mostly in the second half of the 15th c. In determining membership among the city’s ruling elites, the formal criterion will be used, related to the city offices held by the respective persons: the commune head (German: Vogt), city court head (German: Schulz), treasury administrator (German: Kämmerer), juror (German: Schöffe), and, finally, the mayor (German: Bürgermeister). The background for this presentation were previous analyses of historians, devoted to the image of the communities and ruling groups of both cities, in the first place based on other urban provenance sources, depicting their activity in the public and private spheres.
Detailed analyses concerned with the problem formulated in this manner need to be prefixed with a characteristic of the source base which is at pour disposal nowadays.
An important circumstance, severely limiting the results of analyses presented here, is the fact that the obligation of writing one’s testament did not yet exist at that time. Usually there was even no such need, since the rules for inheriting property were specified in the appropriate articles of Chełmno law (Gdańsk Main City) and Lübeck law (Elbląg Old Town).
The largest bequests were usually made for one’s parochial church, significantly smaller ones for numerous monasteries and hospitals within the city and outside of it, and the least went for the poor. The behaviour patterns of testators from Gdańsk and Elbląg do not deviate in this regard from those observed also in other European cities. In some testaments dispositions for religious purposes are absent altogether. This does not, however, mean that such burghers did not earmarked some of their wealth for that purpose. Probably they made such donations in another form than testament disposal.

W artykule skupiono uwagę na bliższym omówieniu dokumentów ostatniej woli spisanych przez przedstawicieli elit rządzących w Głównym Mieście Gdańsku i Starym Mieście Elblągu w późnym średniowieczu, przede wszystkim w drugiej połowie XV wieku. Określając przynależność do elit rządzących miastem, odwołano się do kryterium formalnego, związanego z piastowaniem przez poszczególne osoby urzędów miejskich: wójta, sołtysa miejskiego, kamlarza, ławnika, rajcy i burmistrza. Tłem dla tej prezentacji były wcześniejsze analizy historyków poświęcone obrazowi społeczności i grup rządzących obu miast, oparte przede wszystkim na innych źródłach proweniencji miejskiej, ukazujących ich aktywność w sferze publicznej i prywatnej.
Z przytoczonych przykładów widać wyraźnie, że postanowienia zawarte w testamentach członków elity miejskiej Gdańska i Elbląga wykazują wiele podobieństw, jeśli idzie o sposób podziału majątku, jak i w dyspozycjach ad pias causas. Co ciekawe, pomimo dysponowania przez mieszczan bardzo różnymi sumami w gotówce, od kilkuset do nawet dwudziestu tysięcy małych grzywien pruskich, to zarówno liczba, jak i wysokości legatów na rzecz konkretnych instytucji sakralnych były bardzo podobne. Najbogatsi finansowali również pielgrzymów, którzy w ich intencji odwiedzali najważniejsze ośrodki pielgrzymkowe. Czynili tak czasem również przedstawiciele elity władzy. Sumy przeznaczane na ten cel były podobne w obu miastach i zapewne odpowiadały realnym kosztom i przyjętemu zwyczajowi. Legaty dewocyjne stanowiły w wypadku bogatych mieszczan, kupców i członków elity władzy zazwyczaj niewielki procent posiadanego przez nich majątku, chyba że ofiarodawca nie miał spadkobierców. W części testamentów brak w ogóle dyspozycji na cele pobożne. Nie oznacza to jednak, że mieszczanie ci nie przeznaczali części swego majątku na ten cel. Prawdopodobnie ofiary te przekazywali w innej formie niż dyspozycja testamentowa.

Danziger Klöster im 16. Jahrhundert

Im Artikel werden Veränderungen geschildert, die im Funktionieren der Klöster in Danzig im 16. Jahrhundert stattfanden. Das Phänomen wird sowohl aus dem Standpunkt der Stadtbehörden als auch der einzelnen Klöster gezeigt. Berücksichtigt werden alle Kongregationen, die im damaligen Siedlungskomplex Danzig existierten. Zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts funktionierten hier vier Klöster. Außer den drei Bettelorden – Dominikaner–, Karmeliter‑ und Franziskanerorden – auch das doppelte Kloster des Erlöserordens, in dem neben den zahlenmäßig dominierenden Birgittenschwestern auch eine Gruppe von Mönchen dieser Kongregation lebte. Zu den mit diesen Klöstern verbundenen Kreisen können auch die Gemeinschaften der Terziaren und Terziarinnen gezahlt werden, die von den Bettelmönchen geleitet wurden. Dazu gehörten vor allem die Beginenhäuser, die mit den Dominikanern verbunden waren, und die Gemeinschaft der Karmeliterschwestern, die unter der Obhut des hiesigen Klosters standen, sowie auch das Büßerinnenhaus beim Birgittenkloster.
Einer der wichtigsten Faktoren, die im 16. Jahrhundert einen Einfluss auf den Wandel in Danzig hatten, waren Ereignisse rund um die Entwicklung der Reformation. Eine grundsätzliche Bedeutung hatten sie vor allem für die Organisation der kirchlichen Strukturen in der Stadt, darunter auch für die hier befindlichen Klöster. In der erörterten Periode konnten drei der vier Danziger Klöster die Organisationskrise überstehen, die mit der Entwicklung der Reformation verbunden war. Nur das Franziskanerkloster erlebte seinen Untergang. Die restlichen drei verdankten ihr Überleben vor allem der Unterstützung des Königshofes und des Bischofs von Leslau (Włocławek), die Dominikaner und die Karmeliter hingegen – auch ihren eigenen Behörden. In den gewandelten äußeren Bedingungen mussten sich alle drei Gemeinschaften einen neuen Tätigkeitsmodus ausarbeiten, auch was die Organisation der materiellen Grundlagen ihrer Existenz anbelangt.
In den erhaltenen Quellen bildete der Stadtrat einen Bezugspunkt für die Klöster, der zumindest eine Beschränkung ihrer Einflüsse und unter günstigen Umstanden – ihre gänzliche Beseitigung aus dem städtischen Raum anstrebte: Letzteres gelang ihm nur im Falle der Franziskaner. Viel weniger wissen wir leider über die Beziehungen der Klöster mit der sozialen Basis. Zum Beispiel war die während der Exzesse in den 70er Jahren des 16. Jahrhunderts manifestierte Feindschaft des Pöbels sowohl durch konfessionelle Faktoren als auch durch die aktuelle Situation in der Stadt motiviert. Infolge der Veränderungen beschränkten sich die seelsorgerischen Einflüsse der Klöster im ausgehenden 16. Jahrhundert auf die katholische Minderheit. Dies bedeutete, dass sie vorwiegend mit den niedrigsten Gesellschaftsschichten arbeiteten, die im hohen Prozentsatz aus dem ethnisch polnischen Element bestanden. Interessant ist, dass eine gewisse Kontinuität der Kontakte mit den Zunftorganisationen in der Stadt vermerkt werden kann. Das alle weist auf die Komplexität des Wandels hin, dem die Bevölkerung von Danzig im 16. Jahrhundert – und in der Folge auch ihr Verhältnis zu den in der Stadt verbliebenen katholischen Institutionen, also vor allem zu den Klöstern – unterzogen wurde.

Klasztory w Gdańsku w XVI w.

W artykule przedstawiono zmiany zachodzące w warunkach funkcjonowania klasztorów w Gdańsku w XVI w. Ukazując to zjawisko zarówno z perspektywy władz miasta, jak i poszczególnych klasztorów. Pod uwagę wzięto wszystkie zgromadzenia, działające w ówczesnym kompleksie osadniczym Gdańska. W początkach XVI w. istniały tu cztery klasztory. Obok trzech wspólnot mendykanckich: dominikanów, karmelitów i franciszkanów, także klasztor podwójny zakonu św. Brygidy, w którym obok dominujących liczebnie sióstr, istniała także grupa zakonników tego zgromadzenia. Do kręgów związanych ze wspomnianymi klasztorami można jeszcze zaliczyć wspólnoty tercjarzy i tercjarek prowadzone przez mendykantów. W tym przede wszystkim domy beginek, związane z dominikanami i wspólnotę sióstr karmelitanek, działającą pod opieką tutejszego klasztoru karmelitów oraz dom pokutnic przy klasztorze brygidek.
Jednym z najważniejszych czynników, mających wpływ na zmiany dokonujące się w Gdańsku w XVI w., były wydarzenia związane z rozwojem reformacji. Zasadnicze znaczenie miały one przede wszystkim w wypadku organizacji struktur kościelnych w mieście, w tym szczególnie istniejących w nim klasztorów. W omawianym okresie kryzys organizacyjny związany z rozwojem reformacji przetrwały trzy z czterech gdańskich klasztorów. Upadł jedynie klasztor franciszkanów. Pozostałe zaś swoje przetrwanie zawdzięczały głównie wsparciu dworu królewskiego oraz biskupa włocławskiego, a dominikanie i karmelici również władzom własnych zgromadzeń zakonnych. W zmienionych warunkach zewnętrznych wszystkie trzy wspólnoty musiały wypracować nowy sposób działania, w tym także odnośnie organizacji podstaw materialnych swojej egzystencji.
W zachowanych źródłach punktem odniesienia dla klasztorów była rada miasta, która dążyła do ograniczenia ich wpływów, a w sprzyjających okolicznościach do całkowitego usunięcia z przestrzeni miejskiej, co udało się jej zrealizować jedynie w wypadku franciszkanów. Niestety znacznie mniej wiemy na temat relacji klasztorów z zapleczem społecznym. Przykładowo niechęć pospólstwa manifestowana w ekscesach z lat 70-tych XVI w. motywowana była zarówno czynnikami konfesyjnymi, jak i bieżącą sytuacją polityczną miasta. W efekcie zachodzących zmian, pod koniec XVI w. oddziaływanie duszpasterskie klasztorów ograniczone było do mniejszości katolickiej. Oznaczało to pracę przeważnie wśród najniższych warstw społecznych, które w dużym procencie składały się z elementu etnicznie polskiego. Co ciekawe, równocześnie widoczna jest pewna ciągłość w kontaktach z organizacjami cechowymi w mieście. Wszystko to wskazuje na złożoność przemian jakim podlegała sama społeczność Gdańska w XVI w., a w konsekwencji i jej stosunek do pozostałych w mieście instytucji katolickich, w tym przede wszystkim do klasztorów.

Franciscan Friars in Gdańsk in the Fifteenth and the Sixteenth Centuries

The monastery of Franciscans (i.e., the Order of Friars Minor – Ordo Fratrum Minorum) in Gdańsk was the order’s ultimate foundation in the State of the Teutonic Order in Prussia (1419). It was realised with the assistance of the Teutonic Order and the municipal authorities. However, the intention behind the involvement of the Teutonic Order was to emphasise their own role, and – considering the activity of the Franciscans – they proved unable to fully accomplish it. The monastery was situated in the Suburb (Przedmieście, Ger. Vorstadt) district, south west of the Main City with its largest parish church, St Mary’s Basilica. At that time, SS Peter and Paul’s Church had already been established in the Suburb, while the local inhabitants represented the lower social strata, incl. craftsmen in various trades. Thus, the location and the social surroundings were typical for a mendicant order. Concurrently, the new monastery constituted a significant complement to the sacral topography of more than just that urban complex. The Franciscan Convent in Gdańsk was the third establishment of mendicant orders in the city, following the Order of Preachers active there from the first half of the thirteenth century (from the mid fourteenth century in the Main Town of Gdańsk), and the Carmelites, who arrived in the Young City of Gdańsk at the end of the fourteenth century (in the latter half of the fifteenth century they moved to the Old City of Gdańsk). Much like other friaries of Conventual Franciscans in these territories, the monastery in Gdańsk was a part of the Saxon province, which among other regions encompassed Silesia, and Western Pomerania. Alongside the houses in Chełmno, Toruń, Nowe over the Vistula, Braniewo, Barczewo, and Welawa, it constituted the lower unit of administration of the Saxon province, known as the Prussian custody. Owing to the fact that the new outpost was established in the largest city of the State of the Teutonic Order in Prussia, it soon came to play a major role both in the religious life of the city, and among the Franciscan friaries comprising the aforementioned custody.

Książka analizuje ponad czterdzieści lat współpracy między Gdańskiem i Bremą. Od pierwszych rozmów politycznych na początku lat siedemdziesiątych aż do obchodów jubileuszu czterdziestolecia partnerstwa miast w 2016 roku. Jej celem było wskazanie, w jaki sposób możliwe było przejście od stosunków oficjalnych, w początkowym okresie współpracy, do licznych niezależnych od władz miejskich kontaktów między obywatelami obu miast.

The present dissertation is the result of many years of genealogical and historical research and studies conducted by the author aimed at collecting as much information as possible about a fallen soldier Percy Mac Lean, buried in the war cemetery in Dybki, Ostrów Mazowiecka municipality, and his family. Percy Mac Lean came from a Scottish Mac Lean clan from the island of Coll and his descendants settled in Royal Prussia in the 18th century. The collected material is the result of field studies, archival written and material sources, literature as well as the memoirs of the Mac Lean family members.

The authorship of The Book of Margery Kempe has been the subject of much debate ever since the sole manuscript copy of the text was identified by Hope Emily Allen in 1934. My paper presents two pieces of new evidence relating to Margery Kempe’s son and to Robert Spryngolde, her confessor. The first item, a letter prepared for her son in Danzig (modern Gdańsk) in 1431, discloses the son’s name and the reasons for his journey to Lynn. This information, in turn, sheds new light on the account of The Book’s production as given in the Proem. As a result, the discovery of the letter corroborates the theory that the son was Kempe’s first scribe. A second previously unknown document shows the extent of Robert Spryngolde’s ties to Margery Kempe’s family, strengthening his role as the clerical scribe behind much of The Book. Both findings help to anchor the supposedly autobiographical narrative in its immediate historical situation, thereby strengthening the historicity of the work. Finally, I offer a revised explanation for the collaborative model behind the production of this text.

Abstract
Gdansk was located in Royal Prussia on the south coast of the Baltic Sea and was one of the most important
trade centres in the 16th and the 17th centuries. A Gdansk stove tile collection with heraldic motifs
is especially interesting. It includes, among other things, tiles from the main stove bodies featuring the
Gdansk coat of arms surrounded by mythological figures and a small heraldic tile supported by two lions.
One of the most unique artefacts is the tile presenting the coat of arms of the Sforza family. Also identified
is, a tile with the Royal Prussia coat of arms and the Kingdom of Poland, tiles with a double-headed
eagle motif and with the shield bearer motif. Theses tiles types demonstrate the strong connections that
existed between Gdansk and other trade centres of Northern and Western Europe.

"Some remarks to the significance of the so-called Beautiful
Madonnas in the art and religiosity of the Teutonic State
in Prussia"

The so-called Beautiful Madonnas belong among the most interesting and the most complex groups in gothic sculpture, being still subject to vivid discussions – despite the apparent depletion of the discourse. Time and again new attempts of defining those sculptures emerge, both in terms of their message and their visual structure; new attempts to approach their systematics and attribution. Having a crucial significance for the artistic evolution of Central Europe at the dawn of 15th century, they became an axis of one of more important discussions in Mediaeval studies of that region: the dispute on the genesis of International Style, which keeps reappearing and arising controversies. In Prussia the circle of Beautiful Madonnas has been represented by three figures – the missing Beautiful Madonna on the Moses-console from St. John’s church in Toruń, the Gdańsk Beautiful Madonna in the Rosary Retable in Holy Virgin Church in Gdańsk and located in the same church Virgin with The Child in the Priestly Brotherhood Retable. Despite the previously proposed systematics, none of them seems to be of local creation in the land of former Teutonic State. It also seems that there is no direct relation between them. In this paper a question is being asked about artistic significance of those sculpture for the art of the region (the creativity of local environment) and about their functional sense. After the period of numerous polemics – especially in context of Clasen’s work – presently it is accepted that Beautiful Madonnas are the efflorescence of the experience of Bohemian art. The figure from Toruń not only originated from the Bohemian tradition (which had been repeatedly underlined), but most probably it had been made in one of Prague workshops and found its way to Prussia by import. It has been confirmed by its typological isolation (the lack of similar images of Virgin Mary, that would suggest assimilation of the formula) and artistic alienation in the art of the region. One can not find any justification for most of the so far attributions, relating other eminent works to the Toruń master: Christ in Gethsemane made of marly limestone (Planer Kalkstein) is an import from Prague, as well as a different in form, missing Mary of Good Hope. Also the attribution of a relief Assumption of Mary Magdalene does not seem convincing. The circle of the supposed followers of the master is also disputable. One can not find justification especially for the proposal to relate much younger (ca. 1430) figure of the so-called Gdańsk Beautiful Madonna with the one from Toruń. The Gdańsk sculpture originates from different, French tradition and reveals North-Netherland workshop affiliations (the Ankeveen Madonna). Due to its large dimensions one can assume, that is was made on site. Perhaps the same workshop produced also the so far omitted, partly damaged Madonna in the Frombork Cathedral, that underwent conservation treatment in 2008-2009. It is hard to determine, whether the Netherland master brought to Gdańsk an already formed topos of western art, or whether he worked it out in Gdańsk (in relation with the model of Beautiful Madonna from Toruń). The further development of his art took place most probably not in Pomerania, but in the North Netherlands. And finally the sculpture in the Holy Virgin Brotherhood Retable – another example of an import from Prague, in terms of form reaching for the patterns of late 14th century, in terms of type belonging to the times after 1400. Only this one became a subject of local reception, most probably due to its cult (indulgence) function and the miraculous air. Thus Prussian Beautiful Madonnas were imports from abroad, and not the efflorescence of local artistic tendencies. As a typological and stylistic group they remained an isolated phenomenon in Orderly State. They emerged in a specific religious climate, on the verge of traditional cult of Virgin Mary and devotio moderna, giving witness to the transformations of religious life in Prussia. However, since their artistic impact – as a type, a model, a stylistic source – was not very big, the question of their real significance as a testimony of religious devotion remains open.

Amber Metamorphoses | Bursztynowe przemiany is a book published on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the International Amber Association. My idea was  to launch the book, that includes a brief history of the IAA and presents objects by twenty remarkable artists connected with the Association. We endeavoured to make it a comprehensive catalogue, showing the work of both individual artists and larger companies employing designers. To capture the metamorphoses which took place in the work of each person over the past twenty years, we publish an older and the most recent piece, the well known, as well as unknown examples of jewellery and objects. Hence the title of this publication—to focus your attention on the change which Baltic amber and the design of amber items have undergone since the final years of the 20th century until the present.

The following text concerns the collection of the Gdansk family Breyne, assemblet since the second half of the 17th century, thanks to Jacob Breyne (1637–1607). The father’s passion was continued by Johann Philipp Breyne (1680–1764). In his youth, the junior Breyne lived in an impressive house at ul. Długa 30, and, since 1707, in a house at Brabank 7, which was brought in dowry by his wife, Johanna Constantia. The dwelling had a gar- den, in which many plants, often exotic ones, such as bananas and pineapples, were grown. Although Johann Philipp himself was a doctor, he inherited his father’s fascination with botany; he also supplemented his collection of naturalia and the family book collection, which included the most important compendia on natural history, as well as many drawings and prints.
A portion of the Breynes’ collections, including their amber collection, was purchased by Catherine II in 1766. The other objects, including the numerous drawings, unknown to a broader public, by Johann Philipp’s three daughters: Constantia Philip- pina (1708–?), Anna Renata (1713–1759) and Johanna Henrietta (1714–1797), made their way, together with the book collection, to the castle in Gotha.
Each sister specialised in slightly different topics. The largest number of drawings of plants and birds were left by Anna Rena- ta, and many fewer by Constantia Philippina. Johanna Henrietta specialised in the images of marine creatures. The sisters were inspired by works by Samuel Niedenthal, Andreas Stech and Ma- ria Sybilla Merian, which were available in Gdansk collections. They also had their teacher of drawing – David Schultz. Some of the Breyne sisters’ drawings are marked by a good level of execution, considering they were amateurs. They were also used in contemporary scientific publications. The works surviving in Gotha are testimony to attempts at women’s emancipation in Gdansk in the period of the Enlightenment, in particular in families with scholarly and collectorship traditions (the Breynes, the Kleins), where they received support, including in the area of artistic education.
The collections of Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha include an extensive legacy of the Breyne family from Gdansk, which was acquired by way of purchase in 1799. The first scholar and collector in the dynasty was Jacob Breyne (1637–1697), a botanist recognised throughout Europe, who considerably contributed to the development of knowledge on exotic plants. Jacob’s son, Johann Philipp (1680–1764), continued the family’s scientific and collectorship traditions. He developed his inherited collection, conducted his own paleontological and botanical research, and made sure his father’s works were popularised. Until recently, the activity of the younger Breyne’s daughters, who considerably diversified the family’s collections, remained largely unknown. It is the artistic activity of the three sisters: Constantia Philippina (1708–?), Anna Renata (1713–1759) and Johanna Henrietta (1714– 1797), which will be the main topic of this paper.

Pierwszym w dynastii uczonym i zbieraczem był Jacob Breyne (1637–1697), ceniony w całej Europie botanik, który znacząco przyczynił się do rozwoju wiedzy na temat roślin egzotycznych". Badaczem kontynuującym rodzinne tradycje naukowe i kolekcjonerskie był syn Jacoba – Johann Philipp (1680–1764). Rozwijał on odziedziczoną kolekcję, prowadził własne badania paleontologiczne i botaniczne, jak również dbał o upowszechnianie prac ojca. Dotąd bliżej nieznana pozostawała działalność córek młodszego z Breynów, które w sposób znaczący urozmaiciły rodzinne zbiory. To właśnie omówienie artystycznej aktywności trzech sióstr: Constantii Philippiny (1708–?), Anny Re- naty (1713–1759) i Johanny Henrietty (1714–1797) będą głównym tematem niniejszego artykułu.
Rodzina Breynów pochodziła z Brabancji i osiadła w Gdańsku pod koniec XVI w. Ojciec Jacoba był kupcem, a pozycja społeczna i sytuacja finansowa rodziny były w połowie XVII w. na tyle dobre, że mógł on wysłać syna na praktyki kupieckie do Lejdy, gdzie ten jako wolny słuchacz uczęszczał na zajęcia z botaniki. Po powrocie do rodzinnego miasta Jacob poślubił córkę medaliera – Sarę Rogge i prowadził swą działalność naukową, współpracując z artystami, zakładając także prywatną oficynę wydawniczą.
Johann Philipp po studiach w Królewcu wybrał się w 1699 r. do Lejdy, gdzie w 1702 r. uzyskał tytuł doktora medycyny. Po obronie odbył dwuletnią peregrynację po Euro- pie#. W młodości mieszkał w reprezentacyjnej kamienicy przy ul. Długiej 30, gdzie z pewnością znajdowała się przynajmniej część kolekcji jego ojca. W roku 1707 wszedł w posiadanie posesji z rozległym ogrodem na Brabanku 7 (obecnie Stara Stocznia), którą w wianie wniosła jego żona Johanna Constan- tia, z domu Ludewig (1687–1742)$. Para miała ośmioro dzieci, z których większość nie przeżyła rodziców. W jego posiadaniu było także kilka innych domów na terenie Głównego Miasta.
