Gifted underachievement

Academic achievement of learners is an important indicator of the academic success in school. However, some high-ability learners who show great academic potential fail to perform at a level commensurate with their previously displayed abilities. Meanwhile, it has been largely discovered that these discrepancies resulted from some affective and psychological factors. Depression and Stress are linked to lower academic performance. It is proposed that academic performance is reduced in young people with high levels of stress or depression as a function of increased test-specific worry that impinges on working memory central executive processes. Thus, this study investigated depression and stress as determinants of academic underachievement of high-ability learners in selected secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria.

The Social Cognitive Model of Achievement, Beck’s Cognitive Theory of Depression and Cognitive Activation Theory of stress provided the framework while the descriptive survey research design was adopted. Simple random sampling technique was used to select five secondary schools in Ibadan to cover for the research scope in Oyo State. However, purposive sampling was adopted to select 94 high-ability learners from SS1 and SS2 classes in the selected secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State. To screen for their eligibility as high-ability learners, students’ academic records were obtained from their class teachers in the various schools used in this study and those whose scores are above 70 on the scale of 100 in the key subjects like English and Mathematics were selected; about 8-10 students were selected from each class in the schools. 

The respondents’ age was dominated by the age bracket of 13-16 which represents 84% of the total number of the respondents. Out of the 94 respondents, 55 were females (58.5%) while 39 were males representing 41.5%. likewise, those from the SS2 class were 55 (58.4%) while SS1 were 39 (41.5%). The study found out that depression (r=0.150) and stress (r=0.025) had negative contribution to academic achievement of high-ability learners. It was revealed that a unit increase in depression and stress will cause a decline in academic performance of high-ability learners- academic underachievement by 0.148. The findings from this study also revealed that gender has a significant influence on the effect of depression and stress among high-ability learners’ academic underachievement, even though gender in this study is a moderator variable. This was predominant in the Beck’s depression scale which showed that female high-ability learners are more prone to having mild mood disturbance, moderate depression, and borderline clinical depression than their male counterparts.   
Depression and stress determined academic underachievement among high-ability learners in Oyo State. Therefore, it is recommended that Educators, Counselors, Psychologists, Parents, Researchers and Policy Makers should develop strategies to reduce psychological problems like depression and stress among students and organize intervention programs to enhance high-ability learners’ psychological well-being which helps to increase their academic performance.

This paper addresses the issue of identification of gifted and talented children, discusses the two commonly used procedures for identification, namely, screening and nomination, and illustrates the author’s personal experiences regarding identification issues in China and Hong Kong.

Although they have the potential to excel, twice-exceptional (2e) students of mathematics do not usually have this opportunity as their special educational abilities, and special needs, are often misdiagnosed or “missed” diagnosed in schools due to the teachers’ lack of knowledge. The study explored this issue using an electronic survey for primary school teachers in four local authorities in England. It was planned as a pilot study to gather insights from a small number of schools aiming to identify areas for further study and larger-scale research. When comparing responses from teachers with gifted-related training and those without, the study found some knowledge of specific types of 2e students among both groups of teachers, but no significant difference between them. This raised concerns about the effectiveness of the training, as well as identifying areas that need further and more systematic research.

Educational differentiation and student problems in the Netherlands, 1916-2015: Review of problem analyses, research, and effects of policy measures
This review concentrates on problem analyses and research concerning educational differentiation and student problems carried out in the Nether-lands between 1916 and 2015. The goal is to examine systemic educational causes of student achievement and motivation problems, to evaluate educational proposals to reduce these problems, and to check the effects of measures to reduce the problems in school practice. Results demonstrate the existence of four categories of educational differentiation and student problems: 1) age-based differentiation and systemic measures to reduce student problems; 2) age-based differentiation and non-systemic measures to reduce student problems; 3) special education for students with specific educational needs; 4) individualized education in specific schools. Review outcomes indicate a lack of permanent problem reduction in the first three categories in particular. It is suggested to systemically develop 'Optimal Education' for each student.

In dit artikel staat het onderpresteren van leerlingen in het basisonderwijs centraal. Onderpresteren is opgevat als de discrepantie tussen intelligentie en schools presteren op het gebied van taal en rekenen. Met behulp van secundaire analyse van longitudinale
gegevens uit de grootschalige PRIMA-cohort:studie zijn drie vragen beantwoord: 1) Hoe groot is de groep onderpresteerders? 2) Op welk moment begint (en eventueel eindigt) het onderpresteren? 3) Met welke leerling-en klaskenmerken hangt het onderpresteren samen? De analyse heeft betrekking op bijna 5800 leerlingen die in de jaren 2000, 2002 en 2004 in de groepen 4, 6 en 8 zaten. De resultaten laten zien dat er qua taal bij circa 20% en wat betreft rekenen bij 16% van de leerlingen sprake is van onderpresteren. Met name hoogbegaafde leerlingen gaan in de loop van hun schoolloopbaan onderpresteren. Tevens is er een aantal relaties tussen onderpresteren en andere leerlingkenmerken vastgesteld. De bevindingen maken duidelijk dat er zich nog een reservoir aan verborgen talent bevindt in het basisonderwijs.

The main reasons for continuing the use of the term "gifted are: There is no need to "fix" what is not broken; "Gifted" is well understood non-offensive term; The gifted label helps the double-exceptional and the disadvantaged; "Giftedness" or its translation is successfully used in many language-families; Changing a term is often perceived as a substitute to a needed substantial change; Are there any advantages of replacing "gifted/ness"? Are we ready for the perception changes resulting of the "gifted" term? There is no proof of potential harm at the school level and peer relations. This article offers new directions aiming to increase equity in gifted education without replacing the term "gifted/ness".

Een casus van een cognitief hoogbegaafde leerlinge illustreert sociaal-emotionele, cognitieve, somatische en gedragsproblemen in een reguliere basisschool. Haar recht op ononderbroken ontwikkelingsprocessen wordt niet gerealiseerd. De niet eerder beantwoorde onderzoeksvraag luidt: hoe wordt juridisch en onderwijswetenschappelijk bewezen dat cognitieve hoogbegaafdheid in regulier onderwijs een ‘handicap’ is? Juridisch zijn relevant: wet gelijke behandeling op grond van handicap of chronische ziekte; Verdrag inzake rechten van personen met een handicap; eerste protocol Europees Verdrag Rechten van de Mens; Wet Primair Onderwijs; Internationaal Verdrag Rechten van het Kind; jurisprudentie van het College voor Rechten van de Mens (CvdRM). Onderwijswetenschappelijk gezien blokkeert het leerstofjaarsysteem de continue leerlingontwikkeling. Met deze bewijsvoering hebben ouders ten aanzien van school én samenwerkingsverband een oordeel gevraagd van het CvdRM.

In een eerder artikel hebben wij een casus van een cognitief hoogbegaafde leerlinge in het reguliere onderwijs uitgewerkt. Haar schoolervaringen in het ‘leerstofjaarsysteem’ bestaan uit vele sociaal-emotionele, cognitieve, somatische en gedragsproblemen. Wij toonden zowel juridisch als onderwijswetenschappelijk aan dat haar cognitieve hoogbegaafdheid in het reguliere onderwijs functioneert als een ‘handicap’. Met deze bewijsvoering hebben de ouders van de betrokken leerlinge een oordeel gevraagd van het College voor de Rechten van de Mens. Het College oordeelde dat dit niet het geval is. Wel beval het College de demissionair minister van Basis- en Voortgezet Onderwijs en Media aan de nodige maatregelen te treffen ter ondersteuning van hoogbegaafde kinderen. In dit artikel wordt de aan dit oordeel ten grondslag liggende argumentatie nader geanalyseerd.

De schoolproblemen van een hoogbegaafd kind kunnen onder meer worden verminderd door speciale begeleiding in de vorm van een individuele wiskunde-cursus. Deze publicatie informeert over de inhoud, werkwijze en mogelijke effecten van een dergelijke aanpak.

Een meer dan gemiddelde begaafdheid kan blijken in verschillende gedragingen. Vanaf het begin in groep 1-2 dient met zo'n (hoog)begaafd kind rekening te worden gehouden. Dit vraagt soms vergaande aanpassingen in het speel-/leeraanbod. Als dit niet gebeurt, wordt het kind qua ontwikkelingsjaren teruggezet. Sociale, emotionele, cognitieve en motivationele problemen versterken elkaar dan. De leerling wordt onzeker en onzelfstandiger. De leerkracht probeert de leerling geleidelijk
meer aan te passen aan het groepsproces. Dit maakt de problemen veelal groter.
