Giorgio Picchi

In una chiesa di un monastero di clarisse del ducato di Urbino, nel marzo del 1601, il pittore Giorgio Picchi, in accordo con i sindaci e alcune suore, tenta di distruggere gli affreschi dello stimato Giustino Episcopi, artista della generazione precedente, con la promessa di pitture più allegre e più belle. Interrogato dal tribunale ecclesiastico, Picchi viene accusato di aver violato la clausura e di aver tentato di sostituire delle immagini sacre senza le autorizzazioni previste. I sostenitori lo difesero appellandosi alla convenienza di sostituire le immagini delle sibille con più appropriate figure di santi. Il processo Picchi-Episcopi, come il celebre interrogatorio a Veronese del 1573, è un’indagine sulla pittura sacra dopo il Concilio, sulla condotta del pittore, sui soggetti e sulla maniera di rappresentarli. Attraverso documenti inediti e un confronto con la precettistica del tempo, il contributo, perseguendo un auspicio che fu di Paolo Prodi, intende offrire nuove riflessioni sull’applicazione dei decreti tridentini nelle diocesi particolari. In March 1601, in a church of a monastery of Clarisse in the Duchy of Urbino, the painter Giorgio Picchi, with the support of the mayors and some of the nuns of the convent, tried to destroy the frescoes of the esteemed Giustino Episcopi, an artist of the previous generation. Although Picchi had promised to make more cheerful and beautiful paintings, he was accused for having violated the enclosure and for having tried to replace sacred images without the required authorizations. Some witnesses defended him, appealing to the convenience of replacing the images of the sibyls with more appropriate figures of saints. The Picchi-Episcopi trial, together with the famous interrogation to Veronese in 1573, is not only an investigation on sacred painting after the Council in general, but also on the painter’s behavior, on the paintings’ subjects and on the way of representing them. Through unpublished documents and a comparison with the literature of the time, the essay, pursuing a suggestion by Paolo Prodi, intends to offer new reflections on the application of the Tridentine decrees in the particular dioceses.

The renown of Raphael and Bramante and the key role exercised by Rome in trade and cultural exchanges, as well as in the political interests of the Della Rovere dukes, led to the presence of a growing number of Urbinate artists and craftsmen in the capital from the pontificate of Julius II on. In the early sixteenth century painters and majolica artists from Urbino had played a crucial part in the spread and popularisation of Raphael's inventions, while from the 1540s to the 1550s, it was Michelangelo who became the principal attraction. His presence encouraged the formation of a Group of followers from Casteldurante, one of the most artistically active towns in the Duchy of Urbino. In this way whole family groups, mainly involved in the world of ceramics and bent on more ambitious careers, settled in Rome.  An emblematic case is that of the Picchi family. Before moving their workshop to a very central location at the foot of Trinità di Monti, they had already established relations with Antonio dl Franzese, a member of Michelangelo's household and recipient of some of the most striking Marble works left incomplete by the Master in his house at Macel de’ Corvi.

The research examines the works commissioned to Giorgio Picchi for the church and the convent of the Friars Minor Conventual of Casteldurante. By analyzing the pastoral visits of Bishop Pietro Barugi (1686-1708), the author recreates the structure and the décor of the
ancient Chapel Della Rovere in St. Francis, with particular attention to the painting of The Glory of the Saints,  also called The paradise,
ommissioned by the duke Francesco Maria II. The study focuses also on the frescoes of the ancient cloister of Friars, bringing together
for the first time the few surviving paintings and the preparatory
drawings now preserved in the most important public and private graphic collections of the world. An unpublished letter of 1784 allows, finally, to document the debate about the destruction of the ancient
cloister and its paintings, which began as a result of the protests made by Francesco Luzi, once guardian of the convent, staunch defender of the Picchi’s frescoes, in strong opposition with the bishop of Urbania Paolo Antonio Agostini Zamperoli (1779-1812), who decided to sacrifice the frescoes to allow the friars to build a new arrangement of the interior spaces of the convent, after the damage of the earthquake happened in 1781

Il contributo attraversa la storia della maiolica di Casteldurante passando in rassegna i principali corredi farmaceutici documentati. Vengono esaminate opere di Sebastiano Marforio, di Angelo e Ludovico Picchi, di Diomede Durante mentre ampia è la rassegna dei maiolicari coinvolti in diverse committenze apotecarie: Ubaldo della Morcia, Giovanni Evangelista di Dionisio Valli di Faenza, Filippo Galvani, Simone di Pietro da Colonello, Pomepo Cresci. Il saggio è occasione per presentare documenti inediti sull'attività dei maiolicari durantini a Roma, in particolare di Diomede di Giangiacomo Superichina meglio conosciuto come Diomede Durante.

Il fatto che una fonte non sia «oggettiva» (ma nemmeno un inventario lo è) non significa che sia inutilizzabile. C. Ginzburg 1. Casteldurante, marzo 1601. Alla fine di marzo del 1601, il tribunale ecclesiastico di Casteldurante (oggi Urbania), presieduto dall'abate Commendatario Giulio Virgili, istruì una causa contro Giorgio Picchi (1555 ca.-1605), accusato di aver tentato di distruggere gli affreschi realizzati attorno al 1558 dal più anziano Giustino Episcopi (1520 ca.-1609) nell'altare maggiore della chiesa di S. Chiara della stessa terra. Gli atti del corposo processo si sono dimostrati una fonte eloquente e foriera di molteplici riflessioni sull'applicazione delle determi-nazioni del Concilio di Trento nelle diocesi particolari 1. Tra le numerose deposizioni rilasciate da artisti, artigiani, ecclesiastici, monache e persona-lità riguardevoli del tessuto sociale del piccolo centro del ducato di Urbino, si individuano le tracce di un dibattito sulla maniera più conveniente di rappresentare un sacro mistero come l'Ascensione, sui colori adeguati e sui 1 Cfr.
