Lepanto

En este trabajo queremos analizar el tratamiento que en la prensa escrita de los siglos XVIII, XIX y XX recibió la Batalla de Lepanto. En este sentido queremos apreciar qué elementos reciben más atención, el tono del texto, a saber expositivo, propagandístico o de otro tipo y en último lugar comprobar cómo la época en que se redacta la noticia influye en el enfoque que recibe el episodio histórico analizado.

Tras diversos años de trabajo ha visto la luz la edición más reciente del que puede que sea el primer poema épico sobre Lepanto publicado en la Península ibérica, La singular y admirable victoria que per la gracia de NSD obtingue el Serenissim Senyor don Juan Daustria de la potentissima armada Turquesca. La obra apareció en un ejemplar en octavo preparado en las barcelonesas prensas de Pere Malo en 1573 y circuló también en un manuscrito posterior, actualmente custodiado en la Biblioteca Mazarine de París. Obra de Joan Pujol, poeta catalán nacido en Mataró a mediados del siglo xvi, el Lepant es una breve epopeya escrita en su mayor parte en cobles decasil·làbiques y dividida en tres cantos, cuya singularidad radica en el hecho de que constituye el centro de un pequeño ciclo dedicado a celebrar la victoria cristiana.

Here is some work I did on the fascinating Thomas Stukeley - I was doing work on George Peele's Play The Battle of Alcazar (which is important and fascinating for a whole other set of reasons) and then this just grew (and grew!) out of that.

L’obra en vers del mataroní Joan Pujol, i més concretament la seva epopeia sobre l’episodi de Lepant, és un dels punts culminants de la nostra literatura renaixentista. Moderna i amb trets innovadors, la poesia de Pujol respon de manera clara a un context català de reafirmació cultural, que rellegeix el medieval Ausiàs March des d’una tradició autòctona i en rebutja les lectures hispàniques d’encuny renaixentista; d’altra banda, s’adhereix a l’ofensiva contrareformista. El cicle de Lepant és el pal de paller de la seva obra poètica i el que més renom ha donat al poeta.
Aquesta nova edició torna a posar a l’abast dels lectors el relat en clau catalana d’un episodi fonamental de la història moderna.

İnebahtı Deniz Savaşı (1571) Akdeniz tarihinde meydana gelen en önemli donanmalar savaşıdır. Kıbrıs’ın Osmanlılar tarafından fethi (1570-71) üzerine Avrupa’da kurulan Haçlı ittifakının donanmaları karşısında Osmanlı donanması adeta imha olmuş, gemilerin çoğu batmış, bazılarına el konmuştu. Bu yenilgiyi telafi maksadıyla başta Tersâne-i Âmire olmak üzere Karadeniz’in Anadolu ve Rumeli kıyılarında yeni bir imparatorluk donanması kurmayı kararlaştıran Osmanlı yönetimi, donanma yapım masraflarını esas itibariyle devlet hazinesinden karşılamışsa da başta padişah olmak üzere devlet adamları da gemi yapımı için yardımcı olmuşlardı. Bunun dışında gemi mürettebatının ihtiyacı olan malzeme ve mühimmat ile askerlerin ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak üzere devlete yardımcı olmak için zenginler teşvik edilmiş, Şeyhülislâm Ebussuûd Efendi’nin iki fetvası bu konuda etkili olmuştu. Ayrıca askerlerden savaştan kaçarken ölen veya kurtulanların helak olacaklarına dair başka bir fetvası ile de Pertev Paşa’nın yaptığı tevcih ve terakkilerin tamamı iptal edildi. Bu yazıda Ebussuûd Efendi’nin Kıbrıs seferi fetvası ile İnebahtı hakkındaki üç fetvası savaşlar üzerindeki etkileri bakımından incelenecektir.


ABSTRACT
The Battle of Lepanto (1571) is the most significant naval war that took place in the Mediterranean. The Ottoman fleet was almost destroyed, with many ships sinking or being seized by the fleet of the Crusaders which was gathered in Europe following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus (1570-71). Following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1570-71, the European Crusaders allied, and the Ottoman fleet was almost completely destroyed, with many ships sinking and others captured by the Crusader fleet. To recover from the defeat, the Ottoman state decided to build a new imperial navy in the Imperial Shipyard as well as on the Black Sea’s Anatolian and Rumelian coasts. The expenses of such a huge enterprise were mainly covered by the state treasury but statesmen, led by the sultan himself, also lend support. In addition, people of substance were encouraged to help the state in supplying the provision and ammunition for the crew as well as the needs of the military troops. In this regard, two fatwas issued by Shaikhu’l-Islam Ebussuûd were effective. Pertev Pasha’s grants and promotions were also revoked after another fatwa declared that those fleeing the battle would perish whether they died or survived. The impact of three fatwas issued by Ebussuûd regarding the Siege of Cyprus and the Battle of Lepanto is examined in this article.

The two battles-Preveza and Lepanto-are recorded in European historical memory in very different ways. In European historical memory, Lepanto has become the symbol of Christian victory over the invincible Ottoman Empire, even though it did not result in any significant tactical or strategic advantage or territorial change. The battle of Preveza, on the other hand, faded into oblivion. What similarities and differences can be drawn between the two battles? The historical context of the two battles provides an opportunity to draw parallels. Neither battle can be considered decisive in terms of military history. On 28 September 1538 and 7 October 1571, both battles saw two large enemy fleets clash. One of the most striking differences from the Holy League of 1538 was that in 1571 the Danubian Habsburg Monarchy did not join. In addition to the tactical and combat differences and analogies, we cannot ignore some technical developments: there are significant differences between the Christian galleys fighting in 1538 and 1571.

The article deals with the circumstances of ordering in 1632 a painting “The Battle of Lepanto” with Tomasso Dolabella. This work has so far received numerous references in literature, but the proposed manifold interpretations have aroused discussion among researchers. The painting was originally exposed in the Rosary chapel next to the former Dominican church in Poznań, as part of an ideological program, referring to the cult of Our Lady of the Snows and Saint Jack. [e Foundation of the Rosary Brotherhood was part of the tradition of commemorating the Battle of Lepanto, which was considered a victory gained through the intercession of the Mother of God.

El nombre de esta batalla se vincula casi automáticamente con el choque de civilizaciones. En Europa se tuvo la sensación de que el invencible Imperio Otomano había sido frenado en su avance hacia el Oeste. Felipe II pudo mostrar que la Monarquía de España se constituía como un poder militar hegemónico incontestable. El papa Pio V la exaltó como una victoria de Dios y así fue celebrada. Coincidiendo con la fecha de la batalla, 7 de octubre de 1571, su sucesor Gregorio XIII estableció la fiesta del Rosario vinculando el acontecimiento al triunfo de la Iglesia. Desde entonces se fue tejiendo sobre aquel episodio un mito que lo fue desfigurando hasta hacerlo irreconocible, transformándolo en un relato fantástico, legendario. Voltaire observó entre divertido e irónico que tal exaltación era exagerada o absurda, anotando las primeras líneas del antimito. Concluyó que aquello no fue para tanto, más bien una ocasión desaprovechada. Después de la batalla, nada cambió, el Imperio Turco se anexionó Chipre y Túnez, alcanzó el Magreb amenazando de manera directa la Península Ibérica. El conflicto no concluyó, los europeos aún siguieron amenazados, en el año 1683 los turcos pusieron sitio a Viena apuntando al corazón de Europa. Lepanto, entre el mito y el antimito, se ha desdibujado de tal manera que procede ser reexaminado. Aquí se hace a la luz de su contexto, no como un fenómeno paradigmático del choque de civilizaciones sino inscrito en la quiebra de la cristiandad en el siglo XVI. La cruzada fue necesaria para unir a los cristianos ante la amenaza turca, pero fue mucho más importante para devolver la iniciativa al mundo católico tras la escisión protestante.

Il ritrovamento di una lettera inedita di Antonio Maria Graziani presso la Kenneth Spencer Research Library dell'Università del Kansas, chiarisce le vicende di una commissione mancata che Federico Zuccari sperava di aggiudicarsi all'indomani della Battaglia di Lepanto: la rappresentazione della storica battaglia per Palazzo Ducale a Venezia, opera poi dipinta da Jacopo Tintoretto. Mentre Zuccari sognava per mezzo del cardinale Commendone e del suo segretario Graziani di dare prova di sé cimentandosi in una impresa pubblica a celebrazione della Serenissima Repubblica, a Roma "Giorgino pittore" aveva già messo mano per conto di Pio V alla grandiosa rappresentazione della storica impresa nella Sala Regia.

En el S. XVI mares y océanos se habían convertido en ajetreadas zonas de paso, confrontación, exploración, etc. por las que pululaban armadas, corsarios, piratas, comerciantes y aventureros tanto de coronas europeas como de reinos norteafricanos y orientales. La corona española centraba su interés en controlar las rutas comerciales, puertos, etc. tanto en las Américas como en el Mediterráneo y Norte de España, para proteger esos mercados tanto de la flota Otomana y los berberiscos en el Mediterráneo como de corsarios y demás enemigos en el Atlántico y pacifico, lo cual determino el sistema naval y defensivo que iba a emplear el imperio.

Durant més de dos anys el Museu Marítim de Barcelona va impulsar un projecte de recerca sobre les Drassanes Reials en Època Moderna, un període no gaire conegut però fonamental per comprendre la història de les Drassanes Reials de Barcelona. En el decurs de la recerca els investigadors han localitzat molta documentació conservada en diversos arxius sobre l’arsenal, molts d’aquests documents no havien estat analitzats per l’estudi històric de les Drassanes fins ara.

El resultat ha estat Las Reales Atarazanas de Barcelona en la Edad Moderna. La gran fábrica de galeras de la Monarquía Hispánica (siglos XVI-XVIII) un text de quasi 400 pàgines en el què s’analitza el paper de les Drassanes Reials de Barcelona dins del sistema defensiu de la Monarquia Hispànica, el funcionament de la institució, la gestió que van realitzar les persones que van estar al comandament, les relacions entre els diferents poders que van interactuar en les Drassanes Reials, com es va organitzar l’activitat productiva, com es finançaven les construccions, com es proveïen de la fusta, que professionals van treballar, oficis, qualificació, salaris, problemes que es van crear a l’entorn laboral, les construccions, quantitat i tipus de galeres i altres embarcacions, la qualitat de les mateixes, tot plegat suposa una gran quantitat d’informació inèdita.

Es va optar per la publicació en format digital per donar-li una difusió més amplia i ràpida, amb l’objectiu d’avançar en el coneixement de les Drassanes Reials com edifici i com institució, i l’impacte que va tenir tota la seva activitat a la ciutat i el país. Alhora que captar l’interès per aquesta temàtica d’estudi entre d’altres investigadors del període.

En este artículo se analizan las xilografías de un texto festivo inédito, la Relación de las sumptuosas y ricas  estas... de Sevilla de Pedro de Oviedo (1572), en ocasión de la victoria de la Santa Liga en Lepanto. La primera parte considera el impreso como artefacto cultural que legitima el gobierno del corregidor en esta función extraordinaria. La segunda parte va mas allá del contexto local para explorar el significado providencialista de los estandartes del gremio de mercaderes que sirvieron de inspiración a los principales grabados del impreso. Finalmente estudiamos la codificación de estas imágenes en otros textos e iconografías de la España de los Austrias.

Filippo II ereditò da Carlo V, con le Corone della Monarchia ispanica, una
complicata situazione geopolitica mediterranea, nella quale era strategica la difesa del Regno di Sardegna dalle mire dell’alleanza franco ottomana. Perciò immediati furono i provvedimenti del nuovo sovrano, forte della pregressa esperienza nel governo degli Stati iberici, che prese una serie di iniziative destinate non solo a completare le difese del Regno sardo, ma anche a implementarne l’assetto amministrativo per colmare i ritardi rispetto agli altri Stati della composita Monarchia. Le opere di difesa e le riforme amministrative vedranno la luce nell’ultimo terzo del XVI secolo, dopo attente relazioni propedeutiche, nonostante la battaglia di Lepanto (1571) avesse attenuato la pressione sul fronte mediterraneo.
With the Crowns of the Hispanic Monarchy, Philip II inherited from Charles V a complicated Mediterranean geopolitical situation, in which the  defence of the Kingdom of Sardinia was strategic from the aims of the Franco-Ottoman alliance. Therefore immediate were the measures of the new sovereign, strengthened by the previous experience in the government of the Iberian States, who took a series of initiatives intended to complete the defences of the Sardinian Kingdom, but also to implement its administrative structure to make up for the delays respect to the other
States of the Monarchy. Defence works and administrative reforms will see the light in the last third of the sixteenth century, after careful preparatory reports, despite the battle of Lepanto (1571) mitigated the pressure on the Mediterranean front.

La galera real de Don Juan de Austria, destinada al mando de la flota de la Liga Santa en 1571, fue decorada segun un programa establecido por el humanista sevillano Juan de Mal Lara. Las estatuas y cuadros del interior y del exterior de la popa estaban destinados al capitan Don Juan, con el fin de guiarlo en el camino de las virtudes a traves de la representacion de un combate interior para el triunfo de las virtudes cristianas, las unicas capaces de vencer al Turco infiel.

En el enfrentamiento cristiano-musulmán en el Mediterráneo durante el siglo XVI, en el que la Monarquía Hispánica jugó un papel protagonista, el elemento clave fueron las galeras. Estos buques se reinventaron para adaptarse a las nuevas formas de hacer la guerra y fue por ello que poblaron como nunca antes las aguas del Mediterráneo. Este tema de estudio ha sido siempre muy popular entre los investigadores, quienes se han acercado a él y lo han enfocado desde los más diversos puntos de vista. A pesar de ello-con la excepción del caso veneciano-, se sabe relativamente poco acerca de los artesanos que se encargaban de construir las galeras, y el vacío informativo es más notable cuando ponemos nuestra atención en Barcelona. Las Atarazanas Reales de Barcelona, la principal fábrica de galeras de la Monarquía, han sido mal interpretadas y poco estudiadas para los siglos modernos, y esa es la situación que la investigación que aquí perseguimos pretende revertir.

RESUMEN: La batalla de Lepanto ha suscitado un gran interés entre los especialistas de la Historia Militar, que han debatido durante siglos sobre la trascendencia estratégica de la batalla y sus consecuencias en la guerra del Mediterráneo contra otomanos y berberiscos. Sin embargo, no se ha reparado prácticamente en la riqueza artística y numérica de las imágenes lepantinas generadas en Europa y América durante los siglos XVI y XVII, y aún menos en su trascendencia iconográfica: Vasari, Veronés, Tintoretto, Tiziano, Vicentino, Michieli, Bronzino, El Greco, Cambiaso, Velázquez, Lucas Valdés, etcétera. Imágenes y discursos simbólicos y retóricos con una concepción del poder construida en torno al linaje de los Habsburgo, la familia de reyes y emperadores que gobernó la mayor parte de Europa durante varios siglos, que se enfrentó decididamente a los turcos en tierra y en el mar, y que recurrió hábilmente a las imágenes artísticas para fabricar y difundir una mitología familiar apoteósica en la que Lepanto constituyó uno de sus hitos principales.

Víctor Mínguez, en esta edición limitada y numerada, analiza definitivamente la fabricación del imaginario lepantino, uno de los más formidables artefactos simbólicos y culturales de la Edad Moderna y, además, el primero con una proyección atlántica, como ponen de relieve docenas de sorprendentes representaciones americanas de la batalla.

The writer Miguel de Cervantes witnessed the conflict between Christianity and Islam during the sixteenth century, from his participation in a serie of battles between the two sides, and from his experience as a captive in Algier. This writer immortalized this conflict in his writings, especially the novel “Don Quichotte”, in which he recorded both the Battle of Lepanto and the Battle of the Gouletta events, as well as the lives of the Christian captives and their suffering, and the associated depletion of the human and financial strength of the Europe.

This study examines the so-called Allegory of the battle of Lepanto painted by Lattanzio Gambara in Palazzo Lalatta in Parma. In the context of the artistic celebration of the Christian victory, the large fresco is a paradigmatic case study as far as the practice of transforming the battle into an événement is concerned. The research focuses on the iconographic aspects of the artwork, mostly neglected by the literature so far. Therefore, the essay identifies and analyses the motifs employed by the artist. It briefly discusses their history and general meaning and investigates their semantic function within the symbolic repertoire of Western rhetoric against the Ottoman Empire. Thus, on the basis of a detailed description and interpretation of the numerous figures, this study advances an hypothesis about the fresco's semiotic functioning and its meaning in the context of the Battle of Lepanto, and, in a wider perspective, the cultural clash between East and West. So, the analysis leads to consider the fresco a representation of the idea that the apotheosis of Justice, painted in the centre of the vault, coincides with (or depends on) the defeat of the Turks and the deadly sins, whose personifications are represented around the Justice. Drawing on the abovementioned hypothesis, based essentially on visual evidence, the research suggests a further level of interpretation: in fact, in Early Modern culture, the triumph of Justice (on vice) very often implies a reference to the Astraea myth, frequently used as a political allegory. As a matter of fact, many literary sources show the use of the Astraea narrative in relation to the Ottoman threat, for that myth entails the idea of the universal renovatio, which is traditionally connected to the defeat and conversion of the " Infidels " in Western thought. Finally, the findings support the hypothesis that the Parma allegory suggests a (causal) relation between the naval victory at Lepanto and the return of the golden age.

En 1574, para conmemorar la victoria en la batalla de Lepanto, Felipe II instituyó y dotó en la catedral de Toledo, como primada de España, una memoria anual que debía celebrarse cada 7 de octubre en acción de gracias por el triunfo de la armada cristiana sobre el turco. Para que se exhibieran en aquella ocasión se comprometió a enviar unas banderas e insignias de la victoria de las que hoy se conservan las que ondearon en la galera de don Juan de Austria.

The battle of Lepanto has long been considered one of the decisive naval battles of history. Yet, the savage fighting on Sunday, 7 October 1571 left the strategic map unchanged and the defeated Ottoman Turks were able to replace their losses and launch a new fleet the following year. Nic Fields reexamines the battle and concludes that, while it merely confirmed a strategic reality that had already emerged during the 16th century (i.e. that naval supremacy lay with the Sublime Porte in the eastern Mediterranean, and with Habsburg Spain and its Catholic allies in the western Mediterranean), it's vital importance was psychological. It sank the perception of Ottoman dominance and the inevitability of Islam's westward encroachment beyond the Balkans. With over 200 ships per side, it was the largest naval battle in sixteen centuries and the last major fight between fleets composed entirely of the muscle-driven galley. These slender ships were the direct descendants of the Classical trireme but carried cannon and marines bearing firearms, although massed archery and cold steel still played a major rôle on the fateful day. Nic Fields gives an excellent account of this fascinating and spectacular battle.

Bu çalışma, İnebahtı Muharebesi'nin 1571'den günümüze kadar Avrupalı sanatçılar tarafından nasıl resmedildiğini ve yüzyıllar içinde nasıl tarihsel tutarlılıktan uzak sembolik bir anlatıya dönüştüğünü göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, İnebahtı Savaşı'nın Avrupa sanat tarihindeki yerini vurgulamak açısından, tarihsel tutarlılık kaygısıyla yapılan ve bilgilendirme amacı taşıyan gravürlerden, İnebahtı'yı bir deniz savaşı şeklinde resmeden deniz sanatı eserlerinden ve dini mesaj verme amacı taşıyan sembolik resimlerden örnekler sunulmakta ve zaman içinde İnebahtı odaklı sanatsal üretimin ağırlık merkezinin, olanı tasvir eden resimlerden tahayyül edilenin resmedildiği sembolik resimlere doğru nasıl değiştiği tartışılmaktadır.

Bu makalenin temel konusu, İstanbul’daki Venedik dragomanları ve dil oğlanlarının Kıbrıs’ın fethi ve İnebahtı Deniz Savaşı’nın meşakkatli siyasi ortamında gerçekleştirdikleri diplomatik görevlerdir. Esirlerin azadı ve değiş tokuşu ve hudut ihtilaflarının çözümü onların odak noktasını oluşturmuştur. Bu makale, dragomanların bahsi geçen meselelerin çözümüne katkı sağlarken benimsedikleri müzakere yöntemlerini değerlendirmekte ve analiz etmektedir. Birtakım İtalyanca tarih kitapları ve bazı araştırmacıların makaleleri gibi ikincil kaynakların yanı sıra, Venedik Devlet Arşivi’nde bulunan Senato kararları ve Baylos mektupları gibi birincil kaynaklardan da istifade edilmiştir.

ABSTRACT
The diplomatic missions of Venice’s dragomans and language boys in Constantinople during the difficult political climate of the Conquest of Cyprus and the Naval Battle of Lepanto are the focus of this essay. The release and the exchange of the captives and the resolution of the border contraversions constituted their focus. This article evaluates and analyzes the negotiation methods that the dragomans adopted when they made a contribution to the settlement of the aforementioned problems. The deliberations of the Senate and the letters of the Bailo of the Venetian State Archive were utilized as the primary resources other than secondary resources such as some Italian history books and researchers’ articles.

El fervor religioso del Concilio de Trento produjo en el arte del mundo católico un estilo triunfalista que pretendía demostrar la superioridad de la fe romana y el favor divino de sus príncipes. Con la victoria de Lepanto, los jefes de la Liga Santa crearon una entera propaganda político-religiosa que les permitía explotar los efectos psicológicos de su triunfo frente a la Cristiandad dividida. El ensayo propone revisitar esta historia, relacionando la dimensión artística-ideológica de la Contrarreforma con el contexto político de la República de Venecia, a través de la obra del pintor Paolo Caliari

Ipotesi genealogiche su Antoni de lo Frasso "Militar sardo de la ciudad de Lalguer" - citato e "celebrato" dal Cervantes sul Don Chisciotte - attraverso alcuni documenti editi dei Parlamenti del Regno di Sardegna (Acta Curiarum Regni Sardiniae) nei quali si menzionano i cavalieri algheresi della famiglia de lo Frasso y Bazone dai quali potrebbe derivare il nostro poeta.

A Venezia, nel 1572, venne pubblicata una "Oratione funebre" per i patrizi veneziani morti durante la Battaglia di Lepanto. Il suo autore, Paolo Paruta (1540-1598), era in quel momento pressoché sconosciuto; tale testo continua a rivelare tratti misteriosi, per almeno due motivi: 1) la sua storia editoriale; 2) il suo status diamesico.

2) Molto probabilmente l’orazione non venne mai pronunciata (come invece hanno pensato quasi tutti i critici, fino a questo momento): come già ipotizzato da Marazzini nel 1998, una grande molte di prove storiche e retoriche fanno credere che al contrario l’"Oratione Funebre" parutiana un testo intrinsecamente scritto, e non orale. Tale la conclusione di un’approfondita analisi delle fonti storiche riguardanti i festeggiamenti a Venezia in occasione della vittoria di Lepanto (1571).

In 1572, an "Oratione funebre" for the Venetian noblemen fallen in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) was published in Venice. At that time its author, Paolo Paruta (1540-1598), was an unknown writer, and this text is still problematic, for almost two reasons: 1) its editorial history; 2) its diamesic status.
1) In 1584 a second edition of "Oratione Funebre" was published by Altobello Salicato, probably without Paruta’s consent.
2) Up to now, the most part of scholars believed that the oration was delivered, yet most likely it wasn’t: as assumed by Marazzini 1998, a lot of historical and rhetorical evidences proof that Paruta’s "Oratione Funebre" is just a written text, not an oral one. This is the final result of a thorough examination of the historical sources about the Venetian celebration for the victory of Lepanto (1571).

This study is a preliminary step in the study of naval elements in a graffiti scene located in a bakery at Muro Leccese village (Italy). According to the working hypothesis, such a scene may have illustrated a historic episode related to the city of Messina, the meeting place of the Holy League before the Battle of Lepanto.
