Granovetter

As a welcome alternative to economic explanations of migration, the social network has become a key concept in migration studies. However, by maintaining a static conceptualisation of networks (as grid-like structures) and by suggesting that social capital automatically derives from networks, we tend to fall into a form of network determinism. As an alternative, this paper makes the case for a practice approach to social networks that recognises the changeable nature of networks and the social endeavours that are needed to accumulate social capital. In so doing, I first revisit the work of Granovetter and Bourdieu in order to explore existing practice elements in their network approaches. I subsequently combine these insights with practice-oriented migration studies. This analysis results in four hitherto undertheorised elements that provide a foundation for the advocated networking approach. Finally, I illustrate the analytical value of this approach by discussing the networking practices of sub-Saharan African migrants en route for the European Union.

Internet dynamise nos usages d’une informatique qui depuis longtemps n’est plus le seul apanage des entreprises. Domestiquée et démocratisée, elle a investi nos loisirs, nos communications, nos pratiques de consommation, etc. Et lorsqu’elle revient vers l’entreprise, c’est pour la bouleverser. Dans l’enseignement, la recherche ou la santé, des transformations importantes s’opèrent. En fait, il n’y a pas un domaine de notre vie qui ne soit impacté. Les quadra et plus distinguent un avant et un après, mais les jeunes sont nés dans cet environnement.
L’explosion du nombre de sites Internet et l’élargissement de l’accès au Web aux mobiles ou aux tablettes ne cessent d’augmenter nos possibilités d’entrer en relation avec d’autres personnes. Que ce soit pour développer nos réseaux amicaux ou professionnels, partager nos passions, contribuer à la construction d’une base de connaissances, rechercher un emploi ou simplement communiquer, toutes nos activités sociales trouvent leur pendant Web.
Nouvelles technologies, nouvelles propositions de valeur, nouveaux usages, nouvel eldorado… ne succombons pas trop vite aux chants des sirènes numériques. Si nous adoptons Internet sans prendre le temps de la réflexion, nous n’aurons peut-être pas l’occasion de poser des exigences nouvelles et de rendre plus navigable le long fleuve numérique qui irrigue désormais pratiquement toutes les activités humaines et qui n’a rien de tranquille.

The interactionist perspective is a unique theoretical structure for sociology; instead starting with existing parts (functionalist perspective) or power struggles (conflict perspective), the interactionist perspective initiates with people as its unit of analysis. Individuals create social realities through interaction, negotiation, and communication. As Long (2012) purported, “The interactionist perspective takes the position that it is people who exist and act. All the other ‘structures’ found in society are nothing but human creations” (n.p.). It is within this framework that Granovetter (1973) posited his theory regarding networks, interactions, and relationships. Granovetter’s work on the strength of weak ties essentially advanced social network analysis within the interactionist theoretical perspective, creating a link between the micro-sociologists of the interactionist perspective and macro-sociologists of alternative theoretical persuasions.
