Une fouille d’archéologie préventive menée par la société Antea Archéologie, sur une surface de 5000 m², au lieu-dit « Obere Reben », sur la commune de Merxheim (Haut-
Rhin) a permis la mise au jour d’une portion d’un ensemble funéraire composé de 92 sépultures à inhumation datées du Premier Moyen Âge. Les premiers éléments de
datation issus de l’étude du mobilier semblent indiquer une utilisation de cet espace funéraire du début du début du VIe au début du VIIIe siècle. Des datations radiocarbones
réalisées sur les individus dépourvus de mobilier ont permis d’allonger cette fourchette chronologique jusqu’à la 1ère moitié du Xe siècle.

The cemetery of the Vinařice Group in Prague-Zličín, Hrozenkovská St., belonging to the earlier phase of the Migration Period, represents with 173 documented inhumation graves the largest graveyard of this epoch in Bohemia and one of the largest in Central Europe. Its dating into the 5th century AD is grounded on brooches, buckles, glass vessels, ceramics, different fittings and other metal objects. A belt buckle, a brooch and some other objects indicate an end around 500 AD. The character of the finds suggests a supra-regional importance of the cemetery and cultural relations to Gaul, the Rhineland and the regions along the Danube as well as to the North Sea. Nearly all graves show traces of secondary openings in the same period. A special benefit of the excavation lies in the documentation of niches with ceramic and glass vessels, which are counted as typical of the Vinařice group. The analysis of the considerable material has just begun and will probably take a longer time. The metallographic as well as anthropological-biological, dendrological and chronological analyses and the establishment of a GIS model of the whole cemetery are planned.

Das Gräberfeld der Vinařicer-Gruppe aus der älteren Phase der Völkerwanderungszeit in Prag-Zličín, Hrozenkovská Straße, ist mit 173 erfassten Körpergräbern das größte Gräberfeld dieser Epoche in Böhmen und eines der größten in Mitteleuropa. Die Datierung der Fundstelle in das 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr. wurde anhand von Fibeln, Schnallen, Glasbechern, Keramik, verschiedenen Beschlägen und weiteren Kleinfunden aus Metall vorgenommen. Eine Gürtelschnalle, eine Fibel und einige andere Gegenstände deuten auf ein Ende um 500 n. Chr. Der Charakter der Funde belegt eine überregionale Bedeutung des Gräberfeldes und deutet auf Kulturbeziehungen zu Gallien, dem Rhein- und Donaugebiet sowie zum Nordseeraum hin. Fast alle Gräber weisen Spuren sekundärer Graböffnung in derselben Periode auf. Ein besonderes Verdienst der Ausgrabung liegt in der Dokumentation von Nischen mit Keramik- und Glasgefäßen, die als ein wichtiges Merkmal der Vinařicer-Gruppe gelten. Die Bearbeitung des umfangreichen Fundmaterials steht erst am Anfang und wird vorraussichtlich längere Zeit in Anspruch nehmen. Die metallographischen und andere technologische Analysen wie anthropologisch-biologische, dendrologisch- und chronologischen Untersuchungen sowie die Erstellung eines GIS-Modells für das gesamte Gräberfeld sind in Planung.

Une fouille d’archéologie préventive, menée sur la commune de Vendenheim (Alsace, Bas-Rhin) d’août à novembre 2011, sur une surface de plus de 15 000 m², a permis la découverte d’un ensemble funéraire mérovingien occupé du début du vie à la fin du viie siècle. Parmi les soixante-treize sépultures à  inhumation mises au jour sur le site, 40 % sont pillées. Si les données concernant le pillage sont en accord avec ce qui est fréquemment observé dans la région, la mise en évidence inédite de stries et d’entailles sur les os des individus  appartenant aux sépultures pillées permet d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes de recherche concernant le mode opératoire des pilleurs à l’époque mérovingienne.


The Merovingian cemetery of Vendenheim (Alsace, Bas-Rhin) was discovered during a rescue excavation programme carried out between August and November 2011. On this occasion, 15,000 square metres were explored, revealing the presence of 73 Merovingian graves (6th–7th c.), of which approximately 40 % had been pillaged. If the data on the pillage are consistent with what is commonly observed in the region, the  nprecedented identification of streaks and gashes on the bones from the pillaged graves will open new areas of research on the operating procedure of plunderers during the Merovingian period.


Von August bis November 2011 wurde auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Vendenheim (Region Elsass, Departement Bas-Rhin) auf einer über 15 000 m² großen Fläche eine Präventivgrabung durchführt. Dabei wurde ein merowingisches von Anfang des 6. bis Ende des 7. Jh. genutztes Bestattungsensemble entdeckt. Von den 73 freigelegten Körpergräbern waren 40 % ausgeraubt worden. Während die Informationen bezüglich der Plünderungen den üblichen Beobachtungen in der Region entsprechen, eröffnen an den Knochen der Toten der geplünderten Gräber erstmalig nachgewiesene Rillen und Kerben neue Forschungsansätze bezüglich der orgehensweise der Grabplünderer in merowingischer Zeit.

V souvislosti s výstavou "Hroby barbarů" vydalo Muzeum hl. města Prahy výpravnou a informacemi nabitou knihu “Hroby barbarů v Praze Zličíně. Svět živých a mrtvých doby stěhování národů” autorů Jaroslava Jiříka, Jiřího Vávry, Miroslavy Šmolíkové a Milana Kuchaříka.  Vedle nich svými texty přispěla řada dalších autorů: Karel Sklenář, Stanislav Doležal, Jiří Militký, Wilhelm Heizmann (Mnichov), Dieter Quast (Mohuč), Susanne Greiff (Mohuč), Kristýna Urbanová, Marcela Horáková, Ivana Jarošová.
Tématicky zaměřené a vzájemně provázané kapitoly mapují z různých úhlů pohledu dobu stěhování národů a zasazují tak do širšího kontextu kostrové pohřebiště z 5. století v Praze-Zličíně. Podstatnou součástí knihy jsou informace o zličínském výzkumu, druhotném narušování hrobů a jednotlivých skupinách nálezů, jejich výrobě, distribuci a vzájemných souvislostech. Knihu doprovází množství krásných a názorných fotografií, výtvarných rekonstrukcí Libora Baláka a jiného obrazového materiálu.

Book "Barbarian Graves at Prague Zličín. The World of the Living and the Dead of the Migration Period" was published together with opening the exhibition "Barbarian Graves. The World of the Living and the Dead of the Migration Period" in the City of Prague Museum. The main authors are: Jaroslav Jiřík, Jiří Vávra, Miroslava Šmolíková, Milan Kuchařík. There are other authors who contributed: Karel Sklenář (Prague), Stanislav Doležal (České Budějovice), Jiří Militký (Prague), Wilhelm Heizmann (Munich), Dieter Quast, Susanne Greiff (both Mainz), Kristýna Urbanová, Marcela Horáková, Ivana Jarošová (all Prague).
The mutually interconnected chapters relate to the Great Migration Period from different points of view (history of archaeology of this period in Prague, archaeology of this period in Bohemia and Europe, Roman coins and minting, historical background, the structure of society, kinship, iconography of gold bracteates and Germanic religion. The second half of the book deals with the burial site at Prague-Zličín and many of its aspects (the excavation, secondary reopenings of graves and grave robbery from the point of view of Mediterranean historical sources and of archaeological record at Prague-Zličín, evaluation of metal, ceramic, glass and bone artefacts, technology of glass vessels, evidence of textile remnants and human bones).

The first report on the first stage of running field excavation of a Migration period cemetery in Prague-Zličín in 2006.

The article is a summary of excavation of a burial ground of the so-called Vinařice Group in Prague-Zličín (Hrozenkovská Street, Prague, Czech republic) that took place in 2005 to 2008. The article contains preliminary results of the excavation. The cemetery is dated back to the earlier stage of the Migration Period (5th century A.D.) and it revealed 177 inhumation burials in 174 graves. It is the largest burial site of that period in the Czech republic and one of the largest within central Europe. The rescue excavation of the site was supervised by the Museum of the City of Prague in 2005–06 (Milan Kuchařík), and by the non-profiting organization Labrys, o.p.s. in 2007–08 (Jiří Vávra). The graves can be dated back to the 5th century A.D. on the basis of metallic artefacts like silver fibulae, belt and shoe buckles, and also ceramic and glass vessels. The collection of finds contains also more than thousand glass beads, eight amber beads, a silver torque, a silver gilded pin, silver plaques and dozens of other small silver objects, a ceramic bowl of the late Terra Sigillata, bone combs etc.
Eighteen golden artefacts were unearthed in three graves: five spiral beads, five drops, two shoe buckles, a ring, four fibulae and a Roman solidus, having been coined at the beginning of the fifth century during the reign of the Roman Emperor Honorius. The coin was secondarily redesigned to a fibula by adding a pin to it. The two pairs of the golden fibulae turned out to be pieces of a yet unknown type and they were named after the place of their first occurrence as the type Zličín. The spectrum of imported artefacts shows a wide range of cultural contacts to such regions like the North Sea coast, Apennine peninsula, Rhine and central Danube rivers regions. Those many artefacts were preserved in the graves despite of the fact that almost all burials were secondarily disturbed or looted already in the past. Only several graves remained undisturbed. The robbing left clear traces in the layer structure within the fill of graves. The grave pits had an oblong shape oriented in the west-east direction and walls with elevated side stairs in most of them. Thirty graves contained niches with ceramic and mainly glass vessels in the western walls of grave pits. The niches were situated above heads of the buried ones. The skeletal remains were usually preserved in a bad state of conditions.

"Espaces et pratiques funéraires en Alsace aux époques mérovingienne et carolingienne (Ve-Xe siècles) : un projet de recherche en cours"

L’Alsace compte aujourd’hui une quarantaine de nécropoles mérovingiennes ayant fait l’objet d’une approche archéo-anthropologique et plusieurs centaines explorées depuis le XIXe siècle selon des méthodes plus ou moins rigoureuses. Parmi elles, certaines sont apparues avoir un caractère exceptionnel. Les études et les publications sur ces ensembles sont restées cependant très limitées, comme l’ont soulevé à de nombreuses reprises le Service Régional de l’Archéologie d’Alsace et les membres de la CIRA, et aucune réflexion globale et synthétique n’a encore été engagée sur ces données. Aucun travail critique n’a repris également la base de données du Service régional de l’Archéologie dans laquelle plus de 350 ensembles funéraires du haut Moyen Âge ont été répertoriés sans que leur datation n’ait toujours été vérifiée.

C’est pour reprendre cette documentation importante et engager une réflexion globale sur les pratiques funéraires en Alsace, à la période du haut Moyen Âge, que nous avons proposé ce Projet Collectif de Recherche (PCR) qui sera soumis à la Commission Interrégionale de la Recherche Archéologique (CIRA) en février 2015. Sous réserve de l’accord de la CIRA, les recherches devraient débuter cette année. L’équipe est pluridisciplinaire et regroupe actuellement plus d’une vingtaine de chercheurs. Sa direction sera collégiale avec un représentant pour chaque opérateur archéologique exerçant en Alsace : Hélène BARRAND EMAM pour Antéa Archéologie, Madeleine CHÂTELET pour l’Institut national de Recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap) et Agnieszka KOZIOL pour le Pôle Archéologique Interdépartemental rhénan (PAIR).

Le projet aura pour objectif d’étudier l’évolution des espaces et des pratiques funéraires en Alsace au cours du haut Moyen Age. Le cadre chronologique sera la période du Ve au Xe siècle, période marquée à ses débuts par l’apparition des grandes nécropoles communautaires et à sa fin par le mouvement qui conduira au regroupement des sépultures autour de l’église.

Devant la masse des données et l’impossibilité de traiter l’ensemble de la documentation, le choix s’est porté de travailler en priorité sur les 46 nécropoles fouillées récemment, disposant d’une approche archéo-anthropologique et d’une étude déjà relativement aboutie. Ces nécropoles regroupent 1735 inhumations au total.

Les informations relatives à chaque site funéraire seront rassemblées dans des notices synthétiques et regroupées dans un catalogue. Ces informations viendront alimenter une base de données régionale accessible en ligne et qui sera hébergée par le site internet de l’UMR 7044 de l’université de Strasbourg.

La démarche sera principalement thématique et transversale et se structurera autour d’axes majeurs, apparus comme déterminants dans la recherche actuelle et poursuivant, pour certains d’entre eux, des travaux en cours ou des mémoires universitaires.

Axe 1 – Typologie et chronologie
* Recensement des différents dispositifs funéraires présents en Alsace entre le Ve et le Xe siècle pour l’établissement d’une typologie régionale des sépultures.
* Réexamen de la typo-chronologie des perles et des armes.
* Réalisation d’une sériation par permutation matricielle des tombes les mieux dotées en mobilier pour jeter les bases d’une typo-chronologie régionale.

Axe 2 – La population inhumée : identité biologique
* Caractérisation biologique de la population à partir des 46 sites de référence.
* Validation statistique du sexe archéologique par le biais des données biologiques.

Axe 3 – Rites funéraires, identités sociale et culturelle
* Les parures et le mobilier : la place des armes, le rôle des perles dans les parures et les vêtements, l’apport des restes textiles, le caractère symbolique des objets.
* Les dépôts alimentaires et leur rôle dans les rites funéraires.
* La place des chevaux.

Axe 4 – Le pillage des sépultures mérovingiennes

Axe 5 – Organisation et évolution des espaces funéraires
* L’organisation interne des aires funéraires et la gestion de l’espace sépulcral.
* Les sépultures en contexte d’habitat.
* Réexamen de la durée d’utilisation des aires funéraires au travers d’un programme de datations au radiocarbone.
* Etude des processus ayant conduit à l’émergence du cimetière paroissial.
