Greeks in Egypt

The case of Wahibreemakhet, son of Alexikles and Zenodote, is the most prominent example for the high status that Greeks – as mercenaries or advisors – could attain in Egypt under the Saite pharaohs. The present article argues that his final resting place should be identified in a tomb at Saqqara that was probably discovered by agents of Giovanni Anastasi in the 1820s and that contained not only Wahibreemakhet’s elaborate stone sarcophagus (now in Leiden), canopic jars (in Stockholm) and shabtis (in various collections), but also a set of limestone tomb reliefs recording spells from the Book of the Dead that are today in the collection of the British Museum and that were once erroneously attributed to ‘Campbell’s tomb’ at Giza. Wahibreemakhet’s rich burial, dating to the decades around 600 BC, and his ranking title ‘Royal Sealer’ illustrate both his social status and his assimilation to Egyptian culture.

Nella città ionica di Priene, nella prima metà del VI sec. a.C., Pedon figlio di Amphinneo, mercenario greco al servizio dei faraoni della XXVI dinastia, dedicò una statua-cubo egiziana. 
Non ci è noto se tale statuetta fosse posta in un particolare santuario, in quanto fu ritrovata, verso la fine degli anni '80, in una grotta nei pressi della stessa Priene.
Questa statua-cubo, acefala e mancante dei piedi e del basamento, secondo alcune particolarità stilistiche, è databile al regno di Psammetico I (664-610 a.C.), che assoldò uomini Greci e Carii, come mercenari, per dare unione e stabilità al proprio regno. L'iscrizione, che si trova sulla parte anteriore della statuetta, è bustrofedica e consta di nove linee contenenti la tipica formula del dedicante e degli accenni autobiografici, come era solito nell'uso di questo tipo di scultura da parte degli Egizi; su quest'ultima parte dell'iscrizione, Pedon nomina il faraone sotto cui ha prestato servizio come mercenario, Psammetico (Ψαμμήτιχος), e i particolari doni dati a lui dal faraone, un bracciale d'oro (ψίλιον τε χρύσεογ) e una città (πόλιν), riconducibili ad alcune particolarità della cultura regia sia egizia che persiana.
Un confronto dei caratteri paleografici dell'iscrizione, la data invece al regno di Psammetico II (595-589 a.C.), quarto sovrano di questa dinastia, che fece anch'egli grande uso di mercenari greci nel proprio esercito, in particolare durante una spedizione in Nubia, di cui abbiamo notizia dall'opera di Erodoto  e dai graffiti lasciati da questi greci ad Abu Simbel.
Al dilemma sull'identità del faraone citato nell'iscrizione e alla conseguente datazione della stessa, si sono spesi numerosi studi che hanno sostenuto l'uno o l'altro faraone, fino ad un'ipotesi finale che mette d'accordo entrambe le teorie: il mercenario Pedon avrebbe servito il faraone Psammetico I e, dopo aver acquistato la suddetta statua, sarebbe tornato in Ionia, dove avrebbe inciso l'iscrizione e dove secoli dopo la statuetta è stata ritrovata.

Egyptiot Hellenism represents a capital moment in the history of Greek Diaspora. Its course covers the 19th and the first half of the 20th century within the framework of the colonial system's emergence, expansion, peak and decay. The function of Egyptiot Hellenism is located on the economic, community, social and benefaction level. Moreover, it shaped family and business networks in order to facilitate the penetration of European metropolises into colonial markets.Through the Communitarianism it developed, Egyptiot Hellenism became a seedbed  and cradle of Diaspora euergetism.
This study examines the ideology of euergetism and the redefinition of identities it represents in terms of distinction between traditional and modern society. It also analyses the functions of euergetism on the personal, historical and social level, and its differentiation from philanthropy and volunteerism. Special mention is made to personal recognition of the Benefactor, the Philanthropist and the Volunteer, as well as reciprocation from society.

Ο Αργύριος Μοσχίδης, από τη Λήμνο, υπήρξε πρωτοπόρος ιστορικός ερευνητής και συγγραφέας της ιστορίας του νησιού του (1908) και άλλων έργων. Δίδαξε και διετέλεσε Διευθυντής σε ονομαστές σχολές της ελληνικής ανατολής: Βουρλά, Αϊβαλί, Αλεξάνδρεια, Κάιρο.

Greek scholars have produced a vast body of evidence bearing on nuptial practices that has yet to be mined by a professional economist. By standing on their shoulders, the author proposes and tests radically new interpretations of three important status groups in Greek history: the pallakē, the hetaira, and the nothos. It is argued that legitimate marriage—that is, “marriage by loan of the bride to the groom”—was not the only form of legal marriage in classical Athens and the ancient Greek world generally. Pallakia—that is, “marriage by sale of the bride to the groom”— also was legally recognized. The pallakē-wifeship transaction is a sale into slavery with a restrictive covenant mandating the employment of the sold woman as a wife. The book proposes and tests the hypothesis that the likelihood of bride sale rises with increases in the distance between the ancestral residence of the groom and the father’s household. The “bastard” (nothoi) children of pallakai lacked the legal right to inherit from their fathers but were routinely eligible for Athenian citizenship.. It is argued that the basic social meaning of hetaira (“companion”) is not “prostitute”/”courtesan” but “single woman”—that is, woman legally recognized as being under her own authority (kuria). The defensive adaptation of single women is reflected in Greek myth and social practice by their grouping into packs, most famously the Daniads and Amazons.

Οι Λημνιοί της Αιγύπτου έπαιξαν σπουδαίο ρόλο στην ανάπτυξη του νησιού. Μεγάλη είναι η συνεισφορά τους στην εκπαίδευση, στην ανοικοδόμηση εντυπωσιακών ιερών ναών και γενικά στην κοινωνία της Λήμνου. Οι πιο εύποροι αποτελούσαν κατά κάποιο τρόπο την αριστοκρατία του νησιού. Έχτιζαν εντυπωσιακές κατοικίες, ασκούσαν επιρροή στα κοινοτικά πράγματα, έφερναν νεωτερισμούς και γενικά συνιστούσαν ένα ζηλευτό πρότυπο για τους ντόπιους κατοίκους.

«Ιntroducing Spyros Moschogiannes, international Greek Hand / Shadow Puppet performer and Actor, from Egypt»

Summary: Sp. Moschogiannes proves to be a Greek artist from Egypt, probably born in the late 1890s – early 1900s. He used to entertain (ca. 1926-1960) Greek population of Diaspora by Αcting and performing Shadow Theatre (Karaghiozis) but mainly by performing traditional Hand Puppet Theatre (Fasoulis). Thanks to part of S. Kouimtzis’ Archive (E.L.I.A.-M.I.E.T.), consisted of theatre brochures, professional correspondence and Press reports, additionally to bibliography and scarce Press articles, a lot of information is being revealed. In this frame titles, length and price of his performances come to light, as well as names of his partners (actors, singers, coffee/theatre owners, etch.), cities and places where he performed, terms of his associations, professional tactics and tours (Egypt, Cyprus, Sudan, Greece), what his protagonist puppet and himself looked like, etch. Moschogiannes’ activity mirrors not only amusement channels of Greek Diaspora but unexplored paths of Greek Puppet / Shadow Theatre as well.

This is a collection of 22 essays presenting the latest research on a comprehensive range of questions relating to the Greek presence at the site of Egyptian Naukratis as it is reflected in the pottery from there. The volume includes scientific analysis and is richly illustrated with photographs including colour illustrations, line drawings, maps and tables.

A comparison between The Teaching for Merikare and Niccolò Machiavelli`s Il Principe produces some astonishing results. While Machiavelli`s treatise is generally thought to be representative of the dawn of modern Western political realism, its essential properties are already present in Merikare. This includes the firm belief in strong authority, the fallibility of man, the need to appease the masses, and, if necessary, the demand to repress any developing threat to the power of the elite. In terms of the history of political thought Merikare is placed between the works of the moral realism of Greek philosophers like Plato and the political realism of Thucydides and Machiavelli. With the latter being heavily influenced by ancient authors questions regarding the genesis of Greek political thought can be asked. It may well be that Greek political thought was, at least indirectly, influenced by Egyptian political thought.

La majorité de la population grecque s’étant installée en Égypte à partir du début du XIXe siècle, a quitté définitivement le pays au cours des années qui ont suivi la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Pendant la période en question, les Grecs devaient répondre de façon urgente à un dilemme: soit s’adapter à la nouvelle réalité égyptienne, tant sur le plan social et économique que sur le plan culturel, soit quitter le pays. En même temps qu’un débat sur l’adaptation était en cours, un mouvement de migration s’est mis en place, suivant deux voies principales: vers la Grèce et vers des destinations, qui étaient pour la plupart des centres de la diaspora grecque. La position adoptée par l’État grec concernant ce mouvement de migration était claire: l’État grec a non seulement essayé d’empêcher un rapatriement massif de ses «compatriotes», mais il a aussi organisé leur migration vers des destinations lointaines, en coopération étroite avec la Chambre de Commerce grecque d’Alexandrie et des organisations internationales (le Conseil æcuménique des églises et le Comité intergouvernementale des Migrations de l’Europe). En examinant les stratégies adoptées visant à faciliter la migration des Grecs de l’Égypte, cet article tente d’insérer le phénomène du départ de Grecs de l’Égypte dans un contexte plus vaste à partir de trois axes différents: la réalité égyptienne (nationale et communautaire), la réalité grecque de la métropole et celle de la diaspora, et ce afin d’analyser les facteurs qui ont sapé les fondements de la présence grecque en Égypte. Notre analyse se fait à trois échelles: à l’échelle individuelle d’abord, en se focalisant sur le rôle des acteurs; puis à l’échelle institutionnelle, à savoir des institutions grecques et internationales fonctionnant en Égypte; et enfin, à l’échelle étatique, en examinant à la fois la politique de l’État grec et celle de l’État égyptien. Un regard croisé sur ces trois échelles nous permet de mettre en lumière les particularités, les configurations complexes et les différents enjeux du mouvement migratoire des Grecs d’Égypte dès la fin de la guerre et jusqu’à la crise de Suez, bien en amont du mouvement d’«exode» du début des années 1960.

Egipto es conocido por todos por haber albergado una de las civilizaciones más antiguas del Mediterráneo, ya que podemos remontar hoy sus orígenes, al menos, hasta los dos últimos siglos del IV milenio a.C. Griegos y romanos se interesaron desde muy pronto por las maravillas de la civilización egipcia, a la que consideraban no sólo la cuna de la sabiduría, sino también el origen de muchos de los rasgos que caracterizaron a su propia cultura. Producto de ese interés son los numerosos testimonios escritos que nos han llegado de la Antigüedad, donde autores grecorromanos recogieron las experiencias obtenidas en sus viajes a Egipto, así como sus impresiones acerca de lo que allí conocieron. En este trabajo, analizaremos las obras de algunos de ellos, con objeto de dilucidar qué elementos de la religiosidad egipcia les llamaron especialmente la atención y qué grado de relación guardan esos elementos con la religión griega.

La civilisation égyptienne « pharaonique » et la culture grecque « politique », séparées par la mer, la langue, l’écriture et les traditions, passent souvent pour irréductibles l’une à l’autre. Qui plus est, la disparition, vers l’an 1000, des « civilisations du bronze » (Nouvel Empire, palais Mycéniens) et l’entrée dans l’obscurité d’une période de transition (« Troisième Période Intermédiaire » en Egypte, « âges obscurs » en Grèce) avaient fait rompre les amarres entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée. Un texte d’Hérodote attribue la reprise du contact entre les deux mondes à des mercenaires Ioniens et Cariens qui aidèrent Psammétique I à conquérir le pouvoir pharaonique, à partir de 664 av. J.-C. Quant à l’archéologie grecque d'Égypte, elle insiste sur la date de 625 environ comme terminus post quem, c’est-à-dire l’année à partir de laquelle la présence grecque en Égypte est bien documentée. Cette reconstitution des faits, qui doit tout à Hérodote et à une archéologie extrêmement parcellaire, laisse complètement dans le noir les siècles précédents, en particulier le VIIIème dit « géométrique », qui est pourtant l’âge homérique, et le VIIème dit « orientalisant », qui voit les Grecs multiplier leurs contacts avec les civilisations de Méditerranée orientale. Or, tant les poèmes homériques (essentiellement l’Odyssée) que la découverte d’objets égyptiens ou égyptisants en Crète et ailleurs en Égée posent le problème de l’existence possible de contacts entre l'Égypte et le monde Égéen avant le milieu du VIIème siècle. Ces contacts furent-ils directs ou indirects (intermédiaire phénicien) ? Pacifiques ou conflictuels (piraterie) ? Se firent-ils par l’ouest (doriens) ou par l’est (ioniens) ? Comment sont nées les conceptions grecques de l'Égyptien et du Noir, « les plus justes et les plus pieux des hommes » ? Autant de questions dont le réexamen devra être mené dans un questionnement incluant l’histoire ancienne et l’archéologie.

The article deals with the ancient tradition about Elean delegation sent to an Egyptian pharaoh (Psammetic II or Amasis) in order to find out the best way to organize the Olympic games. The evidences of Herodotus (II. 160) and Diodorus Siculus (I. 95. 2) should be compared with some allusions in Plutarch and Philostratus, with Pausanias’ evidence concerning Elean envoys to the Siwa oracle and with prosopographical and onomastical data. Elean Amasis, mentioned by Theophrastus (apud Athen. Deipn. XIII. 21 (Kaibel)), could take his personal name from the Egyptian king as a result of some real contacts, which had taken place during VI century B. C. Using of names of foreign dynasts is rather typical habit of Greek aristocracy, who wanted to demonstrate in such a way xenic (or quasi-xenic) relations. The historical circumstance of these supposed contacts was the struggle between Elis and Pisatis for control over the Olympic sanctuary and the administration of the Games. The Elean address to Egypt, his kings, oracles and wise men could be originally an attempt to get support from some independent authority, but we can find only the transformed traces of this historical fact presented by anecdotes in the works of Herodotus and Diodorus. The origin of these anecdotes may be anti-elean, but their critical spirit concerning the administration of the Olympic games corresponds with the clause from the VI century B. C. Olympic inscription, which prevents against the partiality of the Elean judges. Taking into account all these facts, the history of Elean envoys itself looks more real than its ‘fairy” anecdotic entourage. The dating of the embassy in version of Diodorus (to the time of Amasis) seems to be more precise.

«Εκεί που η πλαγιά της Γκιώνας σώνεται στον Κορινθιακό, μέσα από ένα ανάερο κυματισμό γυμνών λόφων, μέσα στο φωτερό θάμπος του ήλιου και του γαλάζιου, βρίσκεται το Γαλαξείδι,η ναυτική πολιτεία της ομορφιάς και του ονείρου» Σύμφωνα με το Χρονικό του Γαλαξειδίου: «Ύστερα από πενήντα χρόνια, ησυχάζοντας ο τόπος, και τους Μπολγάρους εξολόθρεψε η οργή του Κυρίου, εβγήκασι οι Γαλαξιδιώτες πάλε στη στεριά, και εξαναχτίσασι τα σπίτια του Γαλαξειδίου, που ήτανε όλο στάχτη και ερείπια, και λόγγοι και ρουμάνια απάνου εφυτρώσασι». Το Χρονικό του Γαλαξειδίου, αυτή η μοναδική ιστορική πηγή για τις περιπέτειες και τη ζωή των κατοίκων κατά τη βυζαντινή εποχή και την εποχή της τουρκοκρατίας είναι μια σύντομη χειρόγραφη περίληψη της ιστορίας του Γαλαξειδίου απο τον 10ο έως τον 18ο αιώνα, που φέρεται να είχε γράψει κάποιος ιερομόναχος με το όνομα Ευθύμιος το 1703 και το οποίο εκδόθηκε με την προσθήκη εκτενών σχολίων απο τον Γαλαξειδιώτη μεσαιωνοδίφη Κωνσταντίνο Σάθα το 1865. Κατά τον Πανεπιστημιακό Καθηγητή Πέτρο Θέμελη: «Το Γαλαξείδι, ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά δείγματα παραδοσιακού οικιστικού συνόλου, κατάφερε να επιβιώσει για αρκετές εκατοντάδες χρόνια, διαφυλάσσοντας τη φυσιογνωμία του σε πείσμα των αλλεπάλληλων επιδρομών και της τακτικά επανερχόμενης μανίας του Εγκέλαδου. […] Τελικά μέσα από το σύνολο του υλικού προβάλλει ανάγλυφη η συνθετική εικόνα της ναυτικής κατ' εξοχήν κοινότητας, που αποτελούσε, ιδιαίτερα στην περίοδο της ακμής της (1830-1900 περίπου), ένα ομοιογενές και σχεδόν αυτοδύναμο σύνολο, έναν πλήρη κύκλο ζωής, και ρύθμιζε αυτόνομα τα του βίου της. » Κατά τον καθηγητή Μαθηματικών και συγγραφέα Αναστάσιο Σκιαδά: «Το φαινόμενο της τέχνης και του λόγου είναι καθολικό στο Γαλαξείδι. Οι δε Γαλαξειδιώτες φέρνουν πηγαία και από καταγωγής αυτήν την έφεση με ιδιαίτερη επίδοση στη Ναυτική τέχνη και τεχνική, τις Επιστήμες, την Καλλιτεχνία και τα Γράμματα»

La  (re)découverte  de  nombreux  trésors  ces  dernières années offre un visage plus juste de la circulation monétaire dans le sud de l’Égypte. Même si le développement de l’utilisation de la monnaie s’est  opéré un peu plus tardivement que dans le reste de l’Égypte, les trouvailles montrent bien que la Vallée thébaine était monétarisée. Le paiement des taxes a favorisé l’emploi de la monnaie (surtout du numéraire de bronze) par toute la population. Et si les troubles ont amené à un paiement plus sporadique des taxes, et donc à une utilisation de la monnaie moins fréquente, elle est restée comme un moyen d’échange accepté de tous. Il en résulte qu’il n’est pas forcément possible de faire le lien entre présence grecque et utilisation de la monnaie.

Το άρθρο επιδιώκει να γνωρίσει στο ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό τη σημαντική θεατρική φυσιογνωμία της Giacinta Pezzana, μιας από τις μεγαλύτερες πρωταγνίστριες της ιταλικής σκηνής του 19ου αιώνα, με αφορμή την ενασχόλησή της με το ελληνικής θεματογραφίας ιστορικό δράμα και τις παραστάσεις που ανέβασε με το θίασό της στο πλαίσιο περιοδείας στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου το 1876. Στο άρθρο παρουσιάζονται α. το βιογραφικό σημείωμα της ηθοποιού, οι πρώτες σηνικές εμφανίσεις, ο βραχύβιος γάμος της με τον σημαντικό Ιταλό συγγραφέα Luigi Gualtieri, οι μεγάλες συνεργασίες και περιοδείες που πραγματοποίησε στη διάρκεια της καριέρας της, ο αγώνας της για τη γυναικεία χειραφέτηση, β. το υποκριτικό της ύφος, η αντίθεσή της στο ύφος της Grande Attore που είχε υιοθετήσει η Adelaide Ristori, οι καινοτόμες ερμηνευτικές της προσεγγίσεις, γ. η συνεργασία της με την Eleonora Duse, η παράσταση κι ο θρίαμβος του έργου του Émile Zola Thérèse Raquin με πρωταγωνίστριες τις δύο ηθοποιούς, η επόμενη αποτυχημένη εμφάνισή της στην Πριγκήπισσα της Βαγδάτης του Αλ. Δουμά (γιου) και η διαδοχή της από την Duse, δ. οι φεμινιστικές απόψεις της και η ερμηνεία της στο ρόλο του Άμλετ, ως απόρροια της πολιτικοκοινωνικής στάσης ζωής που ακολουθούσε. Ακόμα το άρθρο επικεντρώνεται στην περιοδεία της Pezzana στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου τις χρονιές 1875-1876, γίνεται αναλυτική αναφορά στο παραστασιολόγιο του θεάτρου, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις παραστάσεις ιστορικών δραμάτων ελληνικής θεματογραφίας, στον αντίκτυπο που είχαν στο ελληνικό κοινό της πόλης και στην ιδιαίτερη σχέης που ανέπτυξε ο θίασος με την ελληνική κοινότητα Αλεξανδρείας. Πρόκειται για τα έργα Αλκιβιάδης του Cavalotti, Μάρκος Βότσαρης του Θωμά Ζαούλη Σαϊάννη, η Πτώση του Μεσολογγίου του Gualtieri (;), Αι τελευταίαι ημέραι του Σουλίου του Luigi Giabi. Τέλος ειδική αναφορά γίνεται στην απόπειρα συνεργασίας του Δημητρίου Βερναρδάκη με την Ιταλίδα πρωταγωνίστρια με στόχο την πρώτη παρουσίαση της Ευφροσύνης που όμως δεν ευοδόθηκε.

В издание вошли результаты исследовательской работы авторов по исто- рии Александрийской церкви в XIX веке и ее связям с Россией, а также большая подборка документов из российских архивов на эту тему. Боль- шинство документов публикуется впервые. Вводимые в научный оборот документы на иностранных языках даны на языке оригинала с перево- дом. Книга является уникальной в своем роде, поскольку история Алек- сандрийской церкви этого периода и соответствующее направление рос- сийской внешней политики не изучались в нашей стране более ста лет.
Книга будет интересна и полезна историкам, дипломатам, религио- ведам, а также всем интересующимся историей Православия на Востоке и российской внешней политикой XIX в.

OPUS ALEXANDRINUM • Η ΜΟΥΣΙΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΕΙΑΣ

Οpus Alexandrinum = Έργον Αλεξανδρινόν. Το ενδιαφέρον για τη μουσική ζωή και τη λόγια μουσική δημιουργία του ελληνισμού της Αλεξάνδρειας είναι συνυφασμένο με το ευρύτερο ενδιαφέρον για τη συγκλονιστική ιστορία της εμβληματικής μητρόπολης, για τον κοσμοπολιτισμό της, καθώς και για την καθοριστική συμβολή του ελληνικού στοιχείου στην ακμή της, τόσο στην αρχαιότητα όσο και στους νεότερους χρόνους.

Έναυσμα για την έρευνα και την ηχογράφηση μουσικών έργων που σχετίζονται με την Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου στάθηκε η πρόσκληση του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Πολιτισμού (ΕΙΠ) Αλεξανδρείας για μια σειρά συναυλιών στην Αλεξάνδρεια και στο Κάιρο. Έτσι ξεκίνησε η επισταμένη αναζήτηση λόγιας αλεξανδρινής μουσικής που θα ήταν δυνατόν να ερμηνευτεί στο φλάουτο και το πιάνο. Η επιλογή του φλάουτου, εξάλλου, δεν στερείται συμβολισμού, καθότι ο αυλός υπήρξε το όργανο στο οποίο έδειχναν ιδιαίτερη προτίμηση οι διανοούμενοι της ελληνιστικής και ρωμαϊκής Αλεξάνδρειας. Εξαιτίας της πανδημίας του κορονοϊού, η οποία ματαίωσε τη συναυλιακή δραστηριότητα, στραφήκαμε προς την ηχητική καταγραφή ενός μικρού, πλην αντιπροσωπευτικού, μέρους της πληθώρας υλικού που απέδωσε η έρευνα. Με την παράλληλη υποστήριξη του Τμήματος Μουσικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (ΕΚΠΑ), που μας παραχώρησε το Στούντιο Ήχου, ηχογραφήσαμε μαζί με τον πιανίστα Απόστολο Παληό συνθέσεις Ελλήνων που κατάγονταν από την Αλεξάνδρεια ή/και δραστηριοποιήθηκαν εκεί, καθώς και έργα σε ποίηση του Κωνσταντίνου Καβάφη. Η μεσόφωνος Ειρήνη Καράγιαννη συνέβαλε στο εγχείρημα ερμηνεύοντας χαρακτηριστικά της εποχής αλεξανδρινά τραγούδια.

Η έρευνα συνεχίζει να αποκαλύπτει νέες πηγές και ενδιαφέρον υλικό. Η παρούσα καταγραφή δεν είναι παρά μια ενδεικτική των δυνατοτήτων απόπειρα.

In this paper I analyze written hitherto researches on “Egyptian distemper” of the 2nd half of the 1860s and involvement in these events of Russia and Patriarchate of Constantinople. I also observe the existing sources, both published documents and archival ones. At last I outline new research prospects on the basis of these sources.
