sanki homojen bir kütleden ibarettir, kendi içerisinde farklılıklar barındırmaz. Oysaki özellikle kitlesel göçle gelen topluluk bütün kesitleriyle, bütün katmanlarıyla, bütün renkleriyle göç eder. Çünkü top- rağında, sokağında ve evinde barınamaz olmuştur. İlk zamanlar gelenler açısından da farklılıklar ulaşır; gidilen yer ve mekâ- na kendini ait hissetmez, orada varla yok arasında bir yerde dururlar. Sınıfsal, etnik, dinsel, politik, vb. farklılıklar bir kenara itilir. Birbirine tutunarak, yakın durarak; yaşama, var olma şansının artacağı hissi tüm canlılara dair içgüdüsel bir haldir. Ta ki, toplumsal yaşamda farklılıklar yeniden belirginleşmeye başlayıncaya kadar. Yeni bir yaşama başlama, kendini yeni mekâna ait hissetme duygusu gelişmeye başla- yınca, gelişen yeni ilişkiler, yeni temaslar, toplumsal katmanların oluşmasını da sağlar. Bu bir yönüyle yeni bir durum tazminidir de. Etnisite, din, cinsiyet gibi doğumla başlayan aitlikler değişmese de, sınıf ve statü gibi değişimler sıklıkla olur. Farklılıkların belirginleşmesi, yeni rol ve statüler ilk bakışta dışarıdan görülemez. Oysa öteki de içinde “ötekileri” barındırır.
2011 yılından bu yana Suriye’den mülteci- lerle bir arada yaşıyoruz ve pek çoğumuz onları homojen bir topluluk olarak algılı- yoruz. Oysa gelenlerde içlerinde “ötekileri” barındırıyor.
Yani Suriyeliler sadece Müslüman, Hristiyan, Arap, Kürt ve Türkmenlerden ibaret değil. Ezidi, Dürzi, Ermeni, Süryani Çingene (Dom), Filistinli gibi etnik ve dinsel azınlıklardan da oluşuyor. Bu gruplar aslında göçmenliği ve mülteci-
liği katmerli yaşayan, öteki içerisinde ki “öteki”lerdir...
Suriye’de yaşayan Dom toplumu 2011 yılından bu yana taraf olmadığı bir savaşın ortasında kaldı. Çingeneler son beş yılda, Dünyada ve Ortadoğu’daki diğer savaş- larda olduğu gibi, çok büyük zararlar gör- düler. Ama hayatta kalmayı, binlerce yıllık kadim geleneği sürdürmeyi başardılar. Bu fotoğra aki Çingene kızını vizörden gör- düğüm an onun, yüzünün her detayının, o kadim geleneği temsil ettiğini düşündüm. Biz buradayız, diyordu... Yüzlerce yıldır, burada...
Çingene toplumuna ait fotoğra arda yaşamları çoğunlukla, yoksulluk ve yok- sunluk kareleri olarak veriliyor. Bu fotoğraf albümünün her bir sayfasına yansıyanlar, fotoğraf karesinde yer edinenler, özellikle seçilmemiş, orda, o yaşamın içerisindeki kesitlerdir. Savaşın yaratığı gerçektir, kül- türel farklılık, yaşam tarzı, etnik ve dinsel inanç farklılığı, bize benzetemediğimiz “ötekine” reva gördüğümüzdür, fotoğraf- larda ki...
Orada ki, yoksulluktan, onlar yüksünmez. Yokluk, yoksulluğun karşılığı değildir. Sa- hip olmamak, fakirliği değil mülkiyetsizliği ifade eder. Ve mülksüzlük iyidir, göç yolun- da ağırlık yapmaz. Çünkü onlar yüz yıllar süren “büyük yürüyüşe” evlerini sırtlarına alıp, yola çıkılmışlardır...
Şairin dediği gibi;
“Ne yurt saydıkları bir ülke
Ne bağlılık yemininde bulundukları
bir hükümdarları var Sabahları aç karınla çıkıp giden
Akşamları tok karınla yuvaya dönen kuşlar gibidirler”

The local population has the following perception about refugees and migrants: the foreigners who come across
the border must be a homogenous mass and have no differences among them. However, especially in mass migration, an entire society moves with all of its sections, layers and colours;
as they have become unable to live
in their own land. For the newcomers too, at first differences are less obvious; they do not feel that they belong to the space and place they have arrived in and they remain between existence
and inexistence there. Class, ethnic, religious, political and other differences are put aside. In all living things it is an instinct of survival to hold on to one another and stay close. This lasts until differences in social life emerge once more. Once the idea of beginning a new life and belonging to the new place set in, the new relations that are developed, new contacts re-establish the societal segments. This is how the new situation regulates itself. Although identities ac- quired at birth such as ethnicity and sex do not change, class and status often do. The new roles and statuses may not at first be apparent. However, the others have “others” among them.
Since 2011, we have been living together with refugees from Syria in Turkey, and many of us think of them as a homog- enous mass. But the newcomers have “others” among them.
Syrians do not just consist of Muslims, Christians, Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen. Among other ethnic and religious minori- ties there are Yazidis, Druze, Armenians, Assyrian Gypsies (Dom) and Palestinians. These groups have a stronger experience
of migration and refuge and are the oth- ers within the “others”.
The Dom community of Syria has been
at the centre of a war in which it is not
a side since 2011. Gypsies have suffered very much in Syria over the last five years, just as they have in other wars in the world and the Middle East. However, they have managed to survive and to continue their ancient traditions. When I first saw the Gypsy girl in this photograph through the camera, I thought every aspect of her face represented those ancient traditions. It was as though she was saying “We are here. For centuries, we’ve been here.”
In photos of the Gypsy community their lives are generally depicted in scenes of deprivation and poverty. What is reflected on each page of this photo book, in every photo, are cut scenes from the life these people lead and have not been selected on purpose. They show the reality on the ground and what we see fit for the others that we cannot make of our own.
They are not ashamed of their poverty. Poverty is not inexistence. Not owning things is not poverty but not having prop- erty. And not having property is a good thing, because there will be nothing to bear them down on the nomad’s path. They have embarked on the “great walk” that has lasted centuries with their homes on their backs.
As the poet puts it:
“They have no land they call their own, Nor a ruler to which they swear fealty. They are like the birds who leave
the nest hungry,
And come back home full at dusk.”
