History of Library and Information Science

It is a given, today, that the internet as a platform has been used to index more documents than the world's libraries put together. Additionally, majority of the documents that were previously stored on the shelves by libraries in the past are now part of these online collections. In this paper, a brief review of early attempts at the organization of knowledge outside of the libraries based on Rayward (1994) was carried out with a view to linking the past to the present. What exactly was the motivation for the establishment of the office of publicke addresse by Samuel Hartlib and John Dury, and the information bureau suggested by Leibniz? Is there any commercial motivation behind Paul Otlet's Mundaneum? With the understanding that the most capitalized internet service organization (Google) today is involved in reference services similar to those proposed by Hartlib, Dury, and Leibniz, is the end in sight for knowledge organization within the library?

Znanstveni skup povodom pet i pol stoljeća franjevačkog samostana na Glavotoku

U franjevačkom Samostanu svete Marije na Glavotoku, 31. srpnja i 01. kolovoza 2018. godine, održat će se znanstveni skup pod nazivom Mostir svete Marije na Glavi Otoka: Pet i pol stoljeća duhovnosti, povijesti, kulture i umjetnosti.

Skup zajednički organiziraju Provincija franjevaca trećoredaca glagoljaša (Samostan svete Marije na Glavotoku), Staroslavenski institut u Zagrebu (Znanstveni centar izvrsnosti za hrvatsko glagoljaštvo), Katolički bogoslovni fakultet u Zagrebu (Katedra crkvene povijesti) i Povijesno društvo otoka Krka.

Prvog dana, 31. srpnja, između 09.00 i 14.15 sati, održat će se jedanaest izlaganja o raznim temama iz bogate povijesti samostana, redovničkoga života, te djelovanja u njemu. Opće, uvodno izlaganje Mostir svete Marije na Glavi Otoka: Početci i prva desetljeća glavotočkog samostana održat će doc. dr. sc. Tomislav Galović s Filozofskoga fakulteta u Zagrebu, nakon se očekuju izlaganja mr. sc. fra Zvonimira Brusača, dr. sc. fra Izaka Špralja, red. prof. u m. Emina Armana s Muzičke akademije u Zagrebu, dr. sc. Ivana Botice, doc. dr. sc. Antona Bozanića, prof. dr. sc. Franja Velčića, prof. s. Marije Stele Filipović, dr. sc. Joze Vela, dr. sc. Luke Špoljarića, doc. dr. Vinka Kovačića i dipl. ing. el. Jurja Mužine. Nakon serije izlaganja, u 17.00 sati, predviđen je obilazak  arhiva i knjižnica u samostanima franjevaca trećoredaca u Krku i Portu.

Drugog dana, 01. kolovoza, između 09.00 i 14.00 sati, održat će se devet izlaganja s područja povijesti arhitekture te kulturne i umjetničke baštine samostana, kao i dva predavanja o suvremenoj službi gostoprimstva, posebno o iskustvima samostana na Glavotoku. Ovom prigodom Izlagat će dipl. povj. umj. i viši stručni savjetnik konzervator Damir Sabalić, prof. dr. sc. Marijan Bradanović, prof. dr. sc. Nina Kudiš, dipl. ing. arh. Branko Orbanić, provincijski knjižničar i arhivar fra Joso Živković, dipl. graf. ing. Velimir Mikac, prof., viši lektor Teo Radić, tajnica Društva prijatelja glagoljice Mirna Lipovac, prof. dr. sc. Darko Žubrinić, prof. dr. sc. Ivica Raguž i župnik u Kloštru Podravskom fra Ivan Široki. Završne riječi, na kraju prijepodnevnoga rada u ime Znanstvenoga odbora i Organizacijskoga odbora, uputit će dr. sc. Ivan Botica i dr. sc. Tomislav Galović, a nakon njih govorit će domaćini gvardijan fra Anto Garić i provincijal fra Ivo Martinović. U 17.00 sati predviđen je obilazak Vrbnika i posjet obiteljskoj vinariji Katunar.

Proslava će završiti euharistijskim slavljem na Porcijunkulu, blagdan Blažene Djevice Marije Anđeoske, 02. kolovoza, u 18.30 sati, kojim će predsjedati kardinal Vinko Puljić, vrhbosanski nadbiskup. Nakon euharistije organiziran je blagoslov barki i brodica.

History of Humanities, along with the newly formed Society for the History of the Humanities, takes as its subject the history of a wide variety of disciplines including archaeology, art history, historiography, linguistics, literary studies, musicology, philology, and media studies, tracing these fields from their earliest developments, through their formalization into university disciplines, and to the modern day. By exploring these subjects across time and civilizations and along with their socio-political and epistemic implications, the journal takes a critical look at the concept of humanities itself.

This article is a virtual tour of the Osler Library of the History of Medicine at McGill University, highlighting items of Jewish interest. We hope that this exercise will give the reader an appreciation of a dimension of the Osler Library that has not previously been explored.

In 2015, Polis—The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities held an international conference on Hellenistic Egypt's most famous center of scholarship and learning. The interdisciplinary event gathered historians, archaeologists, and linguists, as well as specialists on the Septuagint and on Greek literature to discuss related subjects from a wide array of perspectives and to answer some of the most burning questions related to the rise and fall of this iconic institution.
Created and developed by the Ptolemaic kings, the Library of Alexandria was regarded as the world's main center of scholarship from the 3rd century BC until at least the reign of Cleopatra (48–30 BC). The dream to establish a gigantic library that could assemble all known texts of the Hellenistic period, the outstanding achievements of the scholars who have worked inside its walls, and, finally, the mysteries surrounding its disappearance, have bestowed an almost mythic status on this monumental library.
Where was the Royal Library located exactly, and what kind of texts were kept there? To what extent did the Library of Alexandria become a meeting point for different languages and cultures? Should we distinguish between the Museum and the Library from an institutional point of view? Were the book collections housed in separate buildings? What caused the destruction of those collections and how much was lost? Why do some ancient authors remain silent about the Library's disappearance?

The book comprises eleven articles written by the scholars who participated in the conference, as well as transcripts of the discussions that followed their presentations, an index locorum of all ancient source texts quoted in the book, an extensive bibliography, and an introduction by editor Christophe Rico, outlining the overall contents and highlighting their interrelation.

O advento das tecnologias da informação ocasionou a demanda por documentos digitais, com isto, uma quantidade significativa de documentos com necessidades de preservação em longo prazo começou a ser produzida exclusivamente em meio digital. Entretanto, o cenário das tecnologias é marcado por constantes avanços que vão deixando as tecnologias obsoletas em ciclos cada vez mais curtos. Este artigo aborda as manifestações da obsolescência em nível de suporte e tem como objetivo realizar uma reflexão sobre as estratégias de refrescamento. Desta forma, são enfatizadas práticas desta estratégia que minimizam os impactos da obsolescência tecnológica. O método utilizado consiste na revisão de materiais previamente publicados, os dados coletados são analisados de forma qualitativa e posteriormente discutem-se as vantagens e desvantagens do refrescamento. Por fim, destaca-se o papel fundamental do refrescamento na preservação em longo prazo e apontam-se algumas limitações quanto a sua implementação.

PRESERVATION OF DIGITAL DOCUMENTS:
reflections on the strategies of refreshment

ABSTRACT

The advent of information technology has led to demand for digital documents, thus, a significant amount of documents with need long-term preservation began to be produced exclusively in digital. However, the scenario of technologies is marked by constant advances that will leave obsolete technologies in increasingly shorter cycles. This article discusses the manifestations of obsolescence in support level and aims to conduct a study of the refresh strategies. Thus, are emphasized practices this strategy that minimizes the impacts of technological obsolescence. The method used is to review material previously published, the collected data is analyzed qualitatively and then discusses the advantages and disadvantages of refreshing. Finally, we highlight the key role of refreshing in the long-term preservation and pointed out some limitations on its implementation.

We are so accustomed to use digital memories as data storage devices, that we are oblivious to the improbability of such a practice. Habit hides what we habitually use. To understand the worldwide success of archives and card indexing systems that allow to remember more because they allow to forget more than before, the evolution of scholarly practices and the transformation of cognitive habits in the early modern age must be investigated. This volume contains contributions by nearly every distinguished scholar in the field of early modern knowledge management and filing systems, and offers a remarkable synthesis of the present state of scholarship. A final section explores some current issues in record-keeping and note-taking systems, and provides valuable cues for future research.
