Hybrid Method

A hybrid method, coupling a ray tracing method and a finite difference approach, is proposed for modelling T-wave propagation from an underwater source to an on-land seismic station. The long-range hydroacoustic wavefield, estimated in the SOFAR channel by the Maslov approach, shows many triplications of propagation with an increasing number of caustics as the range increases. Ray tracing approaches lead to a straightforward analysis of the SOFAR propagation: we find that the duration and the amplitude of the hydroacoustic T waves generated by a source close to the SOFAR axis may be respectively eight times longer and almost seven times higher than the duration and the amplitude of hydroacoustic T waves generated by a source close to the SOFAR limits. The finite difference modelling handles the complex hydroacoustic–seismi c T-wave conversion on atoll shores with an illustration of seismic T waves recorded during the Midplate experiment in 1989. Two different seismic stations, FGA on the Fangataufa Atoll and DIN on the Mururoa Atoll, both in French Polynesia, have recorded the seismic T waves due to an underwater chemical blast at a distance greater than 900 km. Synthetic seismograms computed by our proposed hybrid method are close enough to the real data for quantitative interpretation. We believe that the input model structure is accurate enough to allow such analysis of the seismic T waves. The numerical simulation shows that the seismic T waves recorded at both stations are mainly composed of P phases and Rayleigh phases. The simulation shows that the seismic T-wave duration is often linked to the source depth, although other factors (the continental slope or the distance between the top of the continental slope and the seismic station) may also affect the signal duration.

Abstract: Face recognition is an important security application for automatically identifying and verifying a person from image or video source. Face recognition under partial occlusion is a challenge in the field of image analysis and biometrics. Although face recognition has been encouraging, the task turned out to be difficult when illumination, expression, occlusion vary considerably. Occlusion is mainly caused due to sunglasses, cap, scarf, beard, make up etc which deteriorates the performance of the face recognition system. Face recognition is mainly used in the field of security where the system automatically detects and recognizes the presence on human in the surveillance area. While there are numerous amount of research in the field of face recognition under occlusion in an uncontrolled environment, the goal of this paper is to discuss various literature works which are used for face recognition under partial occlusion. In this paper we are also going to discuss some of the important applications of face recognition.

Data Clustering is a descriptive data mining task of finding groups of objects such that the objects in a group will be similar (or related) to one another and different from (or unrelated to) the objects in other groups [5]. The motivation behind this research paper is to explore KMeans partitioning algorithm in the currently available parallel architecture using parallel programming models. Parallel KMeans algorithms have been implemented for a shared memory model using OpenMP programming and distributed memory model using MPI programming. A hybrid version of OpenMP in MPI programming also has been experimented. The performance of the parallel algorithms were analysed to compare the speedup obtained and to study the Amdhals effect. The computational time of hybrid method was reduced by 50% compared to MPI and was also more efficient with balanced load.

More than 35% of the earth’s crust is comprised of clay-bearing rocks, characterized by a wide variation in engineering properties and their resistance to short term weathering by wetting and drying phenomenon. The resistance to short-term weathering can be determined by slake durability index test. There are various methods to determine the slake durability indices of weak rock. The effect of acidity of water (slaking fluid) on slake durability index of shale in the laboratory is investigated. These methods are cumbersome and time consuming but they can provide valuable information on lithology, durability and weather ability of rock. Fuzzy set theory, Fuzzy logic and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) techniques seem very well suited for typical complex geotechnical problems. In conjunction with statistics and conventional mathematical methods, a hybrid method can be developed that may prove a step forward in modeling geotechnical problems. During this investigation a model was developed and compared with two other models i.e., Neuro-fuzzy systems (combination of fuzzy and artificial neural network systems) and artificial neural network system, for the prediction of slake durability index of shaly rock to evaluate the performance of its prediction capability.
