Intermidiality

New communication technology and media convergence in the internet environment have transformed its users’ habits – internet surfers, consumers, receivers, readers of all kinds of texts – who now have access to channels that allow them to have the possibility of replying, creating and interpreting objects. This confluence in the virtual environment erases borders among texts and media, art, entertainment and information and also between the means of production and reception. The teenage reader, who’s skilled when dealing with technology becomes the model of the hyperreader: the one who is able to read fragmented texts, scattered in the cyberspace, the hyperreading. Fanfiction writing is one of this reader’s practices and an example of reading transformation: now, when using the computer, writing and reading happen together. This latter practice, writing-reading, uses interpretation networks and the disclosure of written texts by fan of various pieces, such as the Harry Potter series, in several kinds of media. The pieces by J. K. Rowling have become the main source of hypotext for writing-reading, as they present a universe full of gaps, which lead the reader towards creation. This paper gathers theories of Reception Aesthetics, Intermedia and Literary Studies and approximates the strategies used in the Harry Potter books, media convergence and the possibility of media enabling writing-reading as a way of transforming the reader’s habits. These changes have reshaped the literary system – authors, texts and readers are no longer the same, as hypermedia is the only way of representing the world.

In this essay, I present a summary of my broader discussion of the multidimensional similarities between Aleister Crowley’s and Raul Seixas’s views on Thelema, as well as my argument that Crowley’s influence on Seixas regarding this issue cannot be neglected. I argue that both authors wrote quite clearly of an ideal to the New Æon, and that they took very seriously the task of creating this ideal as a viable alternative to the predominant Christian morality. The motto “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law”, formulated by the English occultist and sung by the Brazilian composer, functions as a reconceptualization of the ideal of freedom as autonomy and individual sovereignty.

This study aims at establishing theoretical and analytical dialogues between intermedial studies and adaptation studies in the analysis of the conceptual album Shadow of the Raven (2007), by the American band, Nox Arcana, which is a reference to Edgar Allan Poe’s literary text. Considering the importance of going beyond the traditional vector literature-cinema and elaborating a metalanguage able to involve other textual architectures, as suggested by Hattnher (2010) concerning the circulation of literature in conceptual albums, intermedial studies collaborate on thinking about the role of convergence among different media in the production of meanings; besides, it contributes to overcoming a binary reading of medial transpositions in adaptations (DINIZ, 2018). Guided by the construction of collaborative knowledge between theoretical perspectives and research interests, we outline our first reflections on the transition of a predominantly written medium, the literary, to a hearing and non-alphabetical medium, the instrumental music. The theoretical framework is based on authors from adaptation studies (HATTNHER, 2010; HUTCHEON, 2006, 2013; MILTON, 2015), intermedial studies (RAJEWSKY, 2005; CLÜVER, 2006; DINIZ, 2018), and music (WISNIK, 1989; SHUKER, 2002).

Esta pesquisa teve como propósito estabelecer uma análise comparada entre as obras de
João do Rio Memórias de um rato de hotel ([1912] 2015), Eva: a propósito de uma
menina original ([1915] 2015) e “Dentro da noite” ([1910] 2010) com a adaptação
cinematográfica Muitos homens num só (2015), dirigida por Mini Kerti. Os principais
objetivos desta dissertação foram identificar as estratégias e escolhas da diretora que
remetem às discussões relacionadas às temáticas da identidade e do romance policial,
presentes em Memórias de um rato de hotel; analisar a inversão do papel da mulher em
Eva: a propósito de uma menina original em relação à personagem Eva do filme;
comparar a relação do espetador do filme com Rodolfo e Clotilde de “Dentro da noite”.
Esta pesquisa tem como justificativa a escassez de trabalhos relacionados ao filme e as
obras literárias selecionadas para esta pesquisa, especialmente Memórias de um rato de
hotel e Eva: a propósito de uma menina original, além disso há também a intenção em
manter viva a obra de João do Rio, que mesmo tendo sido escrita no século XX, ainda se
mantém atual. No que tange aos estudos teóricos da linguagem cinematográfica e
intermidialidade, foram essenciais os estudos de Bazin (1991), Bordwell (1985),
Carvalhal (1998), Clüver (1997; 2006), Hutcheon (2013), Metz (1966; 2014), Plaza
(2010), Rajewsky (2012) e Stam (2006; 2012). Para as discussões relacionadas à autoria
e identidade, utilizou-se as pesquisas de Lejeune (2014) e Hall (2004). Sendo assim,
confirmou-se que João do Rio é o verdadeiro autor das Memórias de um rato de hotel
(2015), haja vista que constrói a história do Dr. Antônio, famoso ladrão de hotel da Belle
Époque carioca, a partir de mascaramentos narrativos a fim de que o leitor acreditasse
estar lendo uma narrativa escrita pelo próprio ladrão. Dessa maneira, também foi possível
traçar uma relação entre João do Rio e Dr. Antônio, posto que os dois dândis possuíam
certa semelhança em relação aos problemas sociais enfrentados pelo Rio de Janeiro no
período da Belle Époque. Por fim, verificou-se a importância da adaptação
cinematográfica Muitos homens num só (2015) para o cinema brasileiro e para que a
literatura de João do Rio se mantenha, de certa forma, viva.

This article focuses on the career of Brazilian tambourine player Russo do Pandeiro, who participated
as a background musician in musical numbers of Brazilian and Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1950s, yet
his work remains mostly uncredited. Although these background musicians consistently appear throughout the
films in which they starred, they still constitute a largely unexplored object of research. I aim to revive this
Brazilian tambourine player from a marginalised setting and invest in an understanding of his contribution to
cinema through an intermedial perspective rather than privilege films as exclusive objects of reflection. My
hypothesis for this intermedial approach will argue that the trajectory of Brazilian supporting musicians, if
observed closely, reveals significant and previously unexplored aspects of the Brazilian cinematographic universe
in the first decades of sound cinema.

Em novembro de 2015 o Cinemídia – Grupo de Estudos sobre História e Teoria das Mídias Audiovisuais do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Imagem e Som da Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) – que existe desde 2013 e é liderado por nós, autores que agora apresentamos este dossiê – realizou o seu I Encontro Internacional, o I Cinemídia, com o tema Intermidialidades. O objetivo das conferências e comunicações foi estimular o debate e a investigação sobre modos de interação entre mídias e a ativação de suas zonas fronteiriças.

O presente trabalho, em consonância com a demanda do contexto cultural contemporâneo, segue a perspectiva da intermedialidade, propondo uma leitura crítica da transposição do romance de Milton Hatoum, Dois irmãos, para a televisão, somada a um breve estudo da adaptação do livro Órfãos do Eldorado para o cinema. A partir desses dois produtos, procuramos trazer à tona alguns dos principais conceitos e estratégias do processo de adaptação.

Margaret Atwood's Cat’s Eye(1988) features the fictional autobiography of Elaine Risley, influential Canadian artist. The painter, upon returning to her hometown, Toronto,  for  a  retrospective  exhibition  of  her  work,  critically  rethinks  her  life  and,  in particular,  her  relationshipwith  her  three  childhood  best  friends:  Carol,  Grace  and Cordelia.  Throughout  the  narrative,  we  follow  Risley's  artistic  and  personal development,  who,  through  her  first-person  account  and  her  paintings —placed  for the reader through epigrammatic descriptions —exposes her trajectory as a woman, artist  and  mother  in  the  60s.  Hite  (1995)  comments  on  the  relationship between  the facts  narrated  by  Risley  and  her  artistic  production,  explaining  the  common  point between  them:  neither  art  nor  personal  experiencecan  be  separated  from  the dynamics of power, which constitute reality. Bearing in mind the connection between the two means —narrative and painting —this work aims to analyze the links between them  in  the  novel.  To  this  end,  the  connections  between  the chapters  and  Risley's paintings —who  name  them —will  be  explored,  as  well  as  the  presentation  and composition of works during the narrative and, when necessary, their relation with other paintings and referenced artists. As theoretical support, I employ authors who work on how Cat's  Eye’s narrative and meanings are assembled, as well as the relationship between  autobiography  and  art:  Banerjee  (1990),  De  Jong  (1998),  Hite  (1995), Howarth  (1974)  and  Vickroy  (2005).  The  expected  contributions  are  the  discussion about the interfaces between narrative and painting, as well as their meanings inside and outside Cat’s Eye.

Resumo: Sob a ótica da Intermidialidade e dos Estudos Interartes, este estudo teve como propósito analisar o livro Memórias de um rato de hotel (1912), com autoria atribuída a João do Rio, e a adaptação cinematográfica baseada nesta obra, Muitos homens num só (2015), dirigida por Mini Kerti. O contexto de ambas as obras é o início do século XX, durante o período da Belle Époque brasileira, auge da carreira de João do Rio e do Dr. Antônio, sendo o primeiro pseudônimo de Paulo Barreto e o segundo o de um gatuno que ficou muito famoso por roubar hotéis no Rio de Janeiro. Desta forma, contando com uma metodologia de cunho comparativo e tendo como base as teorias acerca da adaptação, esta pesquisa buscou analisar as relações entre Memórias de um rato de hotel (1912) e Muitos homens num só (2015), além de evidenciar a importância de ambas as obras no contexto literário e cinematográfico. Abstract: From the perspective of Intermediality and Interart Studies, this study aims to analyze the book Memórias de um rato de hotel (1912), whose authorship is attributed to João do Rio, and the cinematographic adaptation based on this work, entitled Muitos homens num só (2015), and directed by Mini Kerti. The context of both works is the beginning of the 20 th century, the period of the Brazilian Belle Époque, the height of João do Rio's and Dr. Antônio's career; the first is the pseudonym of Paulo Barreto and the second is the pseudonym of a famous thief known for robbing hotels in Rio de Janeiro. Thus, through a comparative methodology and based on theories about adaptation, this research sought to analyze the relationship between Memórias de um rato de hotel (1912) and Muitos homens num só (2015), besides highlighting the importance of both works in the literary and cinematographic context.
