International Gothic Style

This article explores the paintings produced in the Crown of Castile between c. 1390 and c. 1420, the epoch when Infante Fernando de Antequera (130-1416) flourished. He was son of King John I of Castile and he was to become King of Aragon as a consequence of the so-called ‘Compromiso de Caspe’ (1412). This short period was a critical one for Castilian painting. It experienced then radical changes which moved it quickly from a Linear Gothic style out of date in the European context into an International Gothic style aware of the contributions of Italian and Northern painting. Three major areas lead by then the development of Castilian painting (attention is paid to them all): 1) Andalusia, a pioneering centre in the reception of Italian influence (special interest is focused on the mural of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua of the cathedral of Seville); 2) New Castile, where the city of Toledo was ready to receive the first formulations of International Gothic style through Valencian painting (interest is given to the role and work of Gherardo Starnina); 3) Old Castile, the most traditional and sometimes even archaic region, subject to diverse influences.

A través del análisis de las noticias conservadas relativas a la práctica artística y los estudios de dibujos subyacentes hoy en día examinados en pinturas hispanas de época medieval se intenta profundizar en el papel del dibujo como herramienta transformadora de las tradiciones, técnicas y hábitos en la práctica de la pintura gótica, y así en aspectos fundamentales como la formación artística y la transmisión del conocimiento, las transferencias del saber y el uso y valoración de la obra de arte.

El artículo profundiza en la figura de Fernando Yáñez de Figueroa, fundador de la orden de San Jerónimo y primer prior regular del Monasterio de Guadalupe. Su importante patronazgo artístico nos llevará a rastrear el entorno cultural del arzobispo Pedro Tenorio, bajo cuyo auspicio se desarrolló en Toledo a finales del siglo XIV un extraordinario foco de vanguardia del que indudablemente se benefició el prelado guadalupense. En este sentido finalizaremos planteando la intervención del taller toledano de Rovira y Starnina en las pinturas murales de la Capilla de la Magdalena de la Granja de Mirabel, probable empeño personal de Yáñez y uno de los escasos testimonios de pintura trecentista en la Castilla de principios del siglo XV.

"Součástí Lichtenštejnské sbírky na státním hradu ve Šternberku na Moravě jsou i čtyři deskové obrazy tzv. Šternberského oltáře. Obrazy v minulosti tvořily pohyblivá křídla výtvarně zpracovaného retabula, které patrně bylo na mense v kostele Zvěstování Panně Marii při klášteře augustiniánů kanovníků ve Šternberku. Odborná literatura se jimi doposud příliš nezabývala a tak chybí ve všech přehledových dějinách umění českého středověku. Svou kvalitou a pozoruhodnou slohovou povahou tam ovšem právem náleží.
V minulosti došlo k restaurování třech obrazů z celku (sv. Kateřina, sv. Barbora, a sv. Anežka). Čtvrtá deska se sv. Lucií doposud restaurovaná nebyla a středověká malba tak pouze tvarově „vystupuje“ na novodobých přemalbách. Podobu a celkovou ikonografii retabula můžeme poměrně dobře rekonstruovat. Při otevření archy stály na levém křídle v pořadí sv. Barbora a sv. Kateřina, na pravém sv. Anežka a sv. Lucie. Svaté panny nalevo mají na hlavách puncované koruny a na pravém malované věnečky. Toto stranové rozdělení poukazuje, že ve středu archy patrně bylo zobrazení korunované Madony (královny, matky a zároveň panny). Na vnějších stranách otočných křídel bylo Zvěstování Panně Marii, ze kterého se dochovala na reversu desky sv. Barborou pouze postava anděla s úvodním veršem Zdrávasu v rukou. Taková ikonografie hypoteticky koresponduje s prostředím augustiniánů kanovníků.
Zajímavá je i slohová stránka obrazů. Ačkoliv jejich tvůrce byl bytostně spjat a vyučil se v okruhu tvůrců čerpajících z dvorské tvorby 60. let, tak byl již také (možná bezprostředně) poučen tvorbou Mistra třeboňského oltáře. Deskové obrazy tak můžeme datovat do doby kolem roku 1385.
Mobiliární fondy státních hradů a zámků skrývají nesmírné umělecké bohatství, které my památkáři sice evidujeme, ale již tolik nepřispíváme k jeho odbornému zhodnocení a popularizaci. Přitom i toto to by měla být nedílná součást práce odborných pracovníků NPÚ.

The Lichtenstein collections at the state castle in Moravian Šternberk include four panel paintings of the “Šternberk Altar”. In the past, the pictures formed a movable wing of a creatively prepared retabulum which was likely in the church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary at the Augustinian Canon monastery in•Šternberk. Expert literature has not yet addressed them fully, so they are absent in all historical overviews of Czech Medieval art. Their quality and remarkable stylistic nature, however, make them worthy of such recognition.
Three of the paintings were restored sometime in the past (St. Katherine, St. Barbara, and St. Agnes). The fourth panel with St. Lucy has not yet been restored, and the Medieval painting simply “steps out” in form on newer overpaintings. The form and overall iconography of the retabulum can be relatively well constructed. At the opening of the arch on the left wing stood, in order, St. Barbara and St. Katherine, with St. Agnes and St. Lucy on the right. The saints on the left have hallmarked crowns on their heads, while those on the right have painted wreaths. This lateral distribution shows that the center of the arch displayed a painting of the crowned Madonna (queen, mother, and virgin). The outer side of the turned wings showed the Annunciation, which has been preserved on the reverse side of the panel with St. Barbara as only an angel with the introduction to the Hail Mary in her hand. Such iconography hypothetically corresponds to the environment of the Augustinian Canons. The panel paintings are dated to around 1385."

La imagen titular del retablo mayor de la iglesia parroquial de Santa María Magdalena de Mozota (Zaragoza) es una obra representativa de la introducción de los modelos del estilo internacional en Aragón. En origen presidió un retablo gótico del que también formaría parte una talla de santa Lucía conservada en el mismo templo. Dicho mueble fue realizado bajo el patrocinio de la familia Coscó, que ostentó el señorío de Mozota desde finales del siglo XIV. En el presente artículo se plantea su atribución a Pierre de Saint Jean, o Pere de Santjoan, escultor oriundo de la región francesa de Picardía, quien trabajó en diferentes lugares de la Corona de Aragón entre la última década del siglo XIV y el primer tercio del XV.
The wooden sculpture of the main altarpiece in the parish church of Santa María Magdalena of Mozota (Zaragoza) is a representative work of the introduction of the international style models in Aragon. Originally it presided over a Gothic altarpiece of which a carving of Saint Lucia preserved in the same temple would also be part. This altarpiece was made under the patronage of the Coscó family, which held the lordship of Mozota from the late 14th century. In this article we propose its attribution to Pierre de Saint Jean, or Pere de Santjoan, sculptor native of the French region of Picardy, who worked in different places of the Crown of Aragon between the end of the 14th century and the first third of the 15th.

Το θέμα της παρούσας μελέτης είναι διττής φύσης. Από τη μια πλευρά, σχετίζεται με την παρουσίαση των στοιχείων της Πρώιμης Ιταλικής Αναγέννησης («διεθνές γοτθικό στυλ») που συναντώνται στη ζωγραφική παραγωγή ενός πολύ ιδιαίτερου κύκλου καλλιτεχνών με κέντρο την πόλη της Καστοριάς – και εν συνεχεία με επιρροή σε όλο το χώρο της Βαλκανικής – κατά τη Μεταβυζαντινή Περίοδο (1480-1510). Πιο συγκεκριμένα, μεταξύ άλλων, δίνεται το χρονικό και γεωγραφικό πεδίο δράσης του «Εργαστηρίου», ενώ παράλληλα αναλύονται ευσύνοπτα βασικά στοιχεία συγκρότησής του, με έμφαση στα χαρακτηριστικά που υιοθετήθηκαν από τη ζωγραφική της Δύσης κατά το Trecento και το Quattrocento, τόσο σε επίπεδο τεχνοτροπίας, όσο και σε επίπεδο θεματικής ποικιλίας. Από την άλλη πλευρά, γίνεται λόγος για τη διδακτική εφαρμογή όλων αυτών στο μάθημα της Ιστορίας (Β΄ Τάξη Λυκείου) υπό το πρίσμα της αυτόνομης (autonomous) (ή ανακατευθυνόμενης, self-directed) μάθησης (learning), καθώς πολλάκις ιδιαίτερες συνθήκες, όπως στην προκειμένη περίπτωση η πανδημία της νόσου covid-19, επηρεάζουν αξιοσημείωτα τη συνήθη λειτουργία των σχολικών μονάδων, με αποτέλεσμα μια εκ του σύνεγγυς διδασκαλία να καθίσταται αρκετά δύσκολη, έως και αδύνατη. Με άλλα λόγια, επισημαίνεται ένας εναλλακτικός τρόπος οργάνωση του διδακτικού υλικού βασισμένος στην κριτική ερμηνεία της θεωρίας του συμπεριφορισμού (behaviorism) με απώτερο στόχο την ενεργοποίηση των μαθητών/μαθητριών, χωρίς τη φυσική «παρεμβολή» του/της εκπαιδευτικού, όντας οι ίδιοι/ίδιες εκτός σχολικών αιθουσών. Όλα τα παραπάνω ακολουθούν το περιεχόμενο και τη φιλοσοφία των αναθεωρημένων Αναλυτικών Προγραμμάτων και των Οδηγών  των Εκπαιδευτικών.

The subject of the present study is of a dual nature. On the one hand, it explores the cultural connection between the Early Italian Renaissance (international Gothic style) and the paintings of a very special circle of artists, which centered around the city of Kastoria (1480-1510).  On  the  other  hand,  it  proposes  the  didactic  application  of  the  above  in  the History Lesson (2nd Grade of Senior High School) in light of autonomous (or self-directed) learning, as oftentimes special conditions, such as the covid-19 pandemic, affect the normal functioning  of  schools  significantly. A non-distant  learning  becomes  difficult  or  even impossible. Therefore, an alternative way of organizing the teaching material is proposed, one  that  is  based  on  the  critical  interpretation  of the  theory of  behaviorism. The  ultimate goal  is the personal  engagement  of  students,  i.e.  the  search  for  knowledge  without  the physical “intervention” of the teacher and of course away from the classroom. This didactic method / technique follows the content and philosophy of the revised Curricula and Teacher Guides of the Ministry of Education (Greece)

The paper deals in detail with the unknown wall paintings in the sacristy of the church of St. Haštal in Prague and the existence of planographic documentation of local paintings, which was made ​​in 1945. Today is stored in archive of the National Heritage Institute. At present, unfortunately, is almost the sole relevant evidence of their iconography and former quality.
Space was in the late Renaissance uniformly painted, part of the mural was partly taken away during the first restoration of the paintings in 1929 in favor of the presentation of medieval paintings. The second time the paintings were restored in 1945 and the last in 2009.
Space sacristy probably originally served as sources substantiated Chapel of All Saints. This is also consistent with the character of medieval paintings with remarkable iconography. Their creation will be placed in the second half of the 70s of the 14th century. Artistic painter basis is to be found in the circuit can draw explicitly from court patterns. Overlooked was undoubtedly the quality of medieval paintings.

In the Faust story the opportunity accessed is in some sense superhuman , beyond the typical powers or reach of humankind. The something sought could range from sensual lust through idle entertainment to earnestly indulging curiosity, seeking "knowledge". The motive could be innocent, curiosity for its own sake, or polemical, for good or bad.

In this article we will study, through various Catalan works, some variants of the iconographic motif of the Madonna of the Writing Christ Child. We will review how this motif, remarkably polysemic and which is so successful in the artistic style known as “Gothic International”, is illustrated in three examples: a miniature from the Levador del plat de pobres vergonyants, a lost codex from the church of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona; on the panel with the Virgin with the Child, the cardinal virtues and other figures, probably the topmost central section of the Altarpiece of Saint George of the Generalitat, by Bernat Martorell; and in the main compartment of the Altarpiece of the Virgin and Sant Vicenç Ferrer by Pere Garcia de Benavarri. The eschatological ingredients and other aspects, provided by the contexts in which these representations are inserted, legitimize, as we shall see, the interpretation of these “children” who write, read or speak as an option for the medieval representation of Christ the Judge, in this case, however, em- ploying a formula that renounces the most majestic and bloodiest accents of the Judgment to adopt a kind and even tender form, which also favors communication with the donor, individually or collectively. The Catalan examples studied here also allow us to establish significant compositional links with outstanding European works and thus to approach the circulation of motifs and models between approximately 1390 and 1460.

Este breve periodo fue un momento critico para el desarrollo de la pintura castellana. En aquest treball s’analitzen uns fragments de retaule, actualment
força dispersos, que poden relacionar-se amb l’escultor
Pere Oller. L’estil d’aquestes peces ens remet a l’etapa
gironina de l’artífex (c. 1405-1420). Precisament tenim constància
documental de la responsabilitat d’Oller en la factura
d’un retaule d’envergadura, a partir de 1415, destinat a l’altar
major del convent del Carme. Diversos aspectes iconogràfics
d’aquests relleus permeten suggerir una hipotètica procedència
d’aquest retaule, una obra que fins ara s’havia considerat
perduda. D’altra banda, l’encàrrec del retaule del Carme coincideix
amb un moment d’important revitalització de l’orde.

Resumé: Ztracené nástěnné malby v sakristii kostela sv. Haštala na Starém Městě v Praze. Konzervace maleb a jejich plánografická dokumentace v archivu NPÚ

Příspěvek pojednává o objevu a průběhu péče o dosud veskrze neznámé nástěnné malby v sakristii kostela sv. Haštala v Praze a o existenci plánografické dokumentace tamních maleb, zhotovené v roce 1945 a dnes uložené v archívu NPÚ. Ta je dnes bohužel takřka jediným relevantním dokladem jejich ikonografie a někdejší kvality.
Prostora byla v období pozdní renesance jednotně vymalována, přičemž část této výmalby byla zčásti sňata při prvním restaurování maleb v roce 1929 ve prospěch prezentace starší středověké výmalby. Podruhé byly malby restaurovány v roce 1945 a naposledy v roce 2009. V té době bohužel došlo bez viny a vědomí restaurátora k odsekání a nevratné destrukci části středověkých omítek s malbou.
Prostora sakristie pravděpodobně původně sloužila jako pramenně doložená kaple Všech svatých. Tomu odpovídá také charakter středověkých maleb s pozoruhodnou ikonografií. Jejich vznik bude třeba klást do 2. poloviny 70. let 14. století. Umělecké východisko malíře je třeba hledat v okruhu čerpajícím vysloveně z dvorských předloh. Nepřehlédnutelná byla bezesporu i kvalita středověké výmalby.
Renesanční výmalba pochází patrně ze sklonku 16. století a seznamuje nás s proměnou výzdoby a funkce prostory v utrakvistickém kostele.

Stěny sakristie kostela sv. Haštala v Praze jsou pokryté rozličnými a dodnes nepublikovanými malbami z 2. poloviny 70. let 14. století a z ze sklonku 16. století. Středověké malby jsou dnes již prakticky nečitelné a jejich námět dokládá dosud nepublikovaná a pro odbornou veřejnost nesmírně cenná plánografická dokumentace z roku 1945, která je uložená v archívu NPÚ. Příspěvek je pak soupisovým katalogem plánografické dokumentace (pausy, kolorované studie), která doplňuje vlastní katalog všech figurálních maleb na stěnách prostory.
Středověké obrazy dokládají, že prostora sakristie původně sloužila jako kaple a není vyloučené, že jako pramenně doložená kaple Všech svatých. Na západní stěně je totiž pod renesanční malbou Poslední večeře odkryta část světeckých řad, jejichž analogie v rukopisech poukazují, že tam mohly být zobrazeny Nebeské hierarchie. Zvlášť zajímavá je středověká nástěnná malba Kristova rodokmene na severní stěně, která ačkoliv vychází typem z ustáleného zobrazení Stromu Jesse, spíše tematicky koresponduje s rodokmeny Krista ve středověkých korunovačních evangeliářích. V tom smyslu nemusí být od věci, že při kostele měla podací právo česká královna. Významné jsou také malby na opěrném pilíři na jihu prostory, které poukazují k vysloveně devočnímu charakteru někdejší výzdoby.
Renesanční výmalba byla plošná a jednotná. Jedinou vysloveně figurální malbou byla malba Poslední večeře na západní stěně. Zbytek tvořila ornamentální výzdoba a malby měšťanských epitafů s erby.
Příspěvek doplňují krátké medailony autorů plánografické dokumentace akad. malířů Václava Havlíka a Františka Skály st.

PUBLICACIÓN EN CATALÁN, CASTELLANO, INGLÉS Y FRANCÉS

El arte gótico se caracteriza por la riqueza material y la profusión decorativa de las artes figurativas en las diferentes tipologías y técnicas: pintura mural, pintura sobre tabla, orfebrería, esmalte, escultura en piedra, madera y marfil. El fondo de arte gótico del Museo está constituido por obras de procedencia mayoritariamente catalana que abrazan el período comprendido entre el siglo XIII y finales del XV. La exposición permanente de arte gótico del MNAC ilustra la plenitud y el momento de máxima expansión territorial catalana en el contexto de la Europa mediterránea de la época.

This article deals with the long-lasting engagement of Enrico Castelnuovo with the art of the period usually termed international gothic. It shows how the author contributed to a better understanding of this period. moreover, it tries to explain the approach of Castelnuovo, showing how the theme was deeply connected to some of his most innovatory and influential methodological proposals.
