Comment l’affirmation berbère s’est-elle construite en Algérie, et plus particulièrement dans le cas de la Kabylie ? À rebours des clichés sur les problématiques régionalistes, Yassine Temlali entreprend dans ce livre de définir un cadre d’analyse rigoureux à partir de questionnements essentiels : quelle était la situation réelle des communautés berbères à la veille de la conquête coloniale ? L’occupation française a-t-elle pu être un agent d’intégration des régions berbérophones à une nouvelle entité, l’Algérie ? Y a-t-il eu une « politique kabyle » de la France ? Pourquoi les berbéro-nationalistes du PPA-MTLD, critiques envers sa doctrine arabo-islamique, sont-ils restés minoritaires ? Y a-t-il eu au sein du FLN, entre 1954 et 1962, une guerre entre « Arabes » et « Kabyles » ? Pourquoi dans les régions berbérophones de l’Est, l’affirmation berbère n’est-elle pas aussi ancienne qu’en Kabylie ? Et comment expliquer qu’à l’indépendance, en 1962, ces régions se soient positionnées de façon différente vis-à-vis du régime d’Ahmed Ben Bella ?
S’écartant des sentiers battus de l’essentialisation des identités culturelles, par définition flottantes et éphémères, l’auteur restitue le cadre historique dans lequel, entre 1830 et 1962, est née en Algérie une conscience culturelle et politique berbère, de façon concomitante avec la naissance de ces entités modernes que sont la nation algérienne, la Kabylie… Un livre original et salutaire qui entend dépasser la guerre des « récits identitaires » en Algérie et qui, en France, intéressera notamment nombre de lecteurs dont les racines plongent dans ce pays.

L'olivier a été  la principale culture arbustive en Afrique du Nord depuis l'Antiquité. Les vestiges archéologiques, les textes antiques, médiévaux, et modernes fournissent une documentation considérable. On peut également s'appuyer sur les méthodes et usages traditionnels, toujours en usage malgré les progrès récents des méthodes modernes, notamment pour le pressage.

Augmented and edited version of Amawal, dictionary of Berber words related to modern concepts and objects. The first version of Amawal was published in 1974 by Mouloud Mammeri and his team. It was of course incomplete and contained a few errors. This work corrects and completes it in a way.

This article presents a study of an 18/19th-century Kabyle Berber manuscript from the Lmuhub Ulahbib library (Béjaïa, Algeria) dealing with theology (the Sanusi Creed). First, the manuscript is placed in its historical and religious context. The structure of the Berber text is presented and compared briefly with the Arabic sources. Palaeographic, orthographic, and linguistic features of the document are discussed and illustrated by means of a passage from the manuscript.

English abstract:
The Algerian poet Si Mohand ou-Mhand (1848 - 1905), considered the greatest Kabyle poet, is best known for two aspects of his poetic production, the love poems of his youth, and the proud and unsubdued poems of his maturity. When the revolt of Kabylie in 1871 was crushed by France, which imposed a new order, replacing the traditional elite (of which the family of Si Mohand was a part) by petty and obedient individuals, the poet decided not to abandon the country, at the cost of being forced to lead a "cursed" life, adapting to precarious and low-paying jobs, moving from one village to another and indulging in vices (alcohol, kif, gambling) ...). He continued, however, to denounce the cowardice of his contemporaries, composing a number of wonderful poems that described his misfortunes and vicissitudes, which he shared with many of his countrymen. Despite this celebrity linked to material experiences and the rejection of traditional practices of religion, Si Mohand's poetry reveals a deep and intimate tension towards the spiritual, a legacy of his Sufi formation, which manifests itself in many circumstances of his life, up to the last moments.
This paper aims to analyze the traits that highlight this personal religious sensitivity, through a choice of poems revealing the spiritual journey of the poet.

Le poète algérien Si Mohand ou-Mhand (1848 - 1905), considéré le plus grand poète kabyle, est surtout connu pour deux aspects de sa production poétique, celui amoureux et paillard de sa jeunesse, et celui fier et insoumis de sa maturité. Quand la révolte de la Kabylie en 1871 fut écrasée par la France qui imposa un ordre nouveau, remplaçant l’élite traditionnelle (dont la famille de Si Mohand faisait partie) par des individus mesquins et obéissants, le poète décida de ne pas abandonner le pays au prix d’être obligé à mener une vie de « maudit », s’adaptant à des emplois précaires et peu rémunérés, se déplaçant à pieds d’un village à l’autre et s’adonnant aux vices (alcool, kif, jeu...). Il continuait cependant à fustiger la lâcheté de ses contemporains, composant une quantité de poèmes merveilleux qui décrivaient ses malheurs et ses vicissitudes, qu’il partageait avec beaucoup de ses compatriotes. Malgré cette célébrité liée à des expériences matérielles et au rejet des pratiques traditionnelles de la religion, la poésie de Si Mohand révèle une profonde tension intime vers le spirituel, héritage de sa formation soufi, qui se manifeste dans plusieurs circonstances de sa vie, jusqu’aux derniers moments.
Cette communication vise à analyser les traits qui font ressortir cette sensibilité religieuse personnelle, à travers un choix de poèmes révélateurs du parcours spirituel du poète.

Entre De la démocratie en Amérique (1835-1840) et sa mission d'évaluation de l'Algérie pour le Parlement français en 1847-1848, Tocqueville participe à l'élaboration de la pensée colonialiste du XIXe siècle. Cette étude s'intéresse particulièrement à la correspondance entre ces deux textes qui portent sur deux espaces coloniaux distincts afin de déterminer les constantes et ruptures entre la colonisation de l'Amérique et la colonisation de l'Afrique.

L' íslamisme sous sa forme actuelle ne peut être pleinement saisi que si on remonte dans l'histoire de l' Algérie et de l'Afrique du Nord et dans leurs relations avec le monde «arabe». Le mouvement islamiste d'aujourd'hui a des affinités avec le mouvement ouléma et ses promoteurs orientaux. Le document de 1948 de Bachir Al-Ibrahimi à propos du statut de la langue mérite d'être connu ainsi que le contexte dans lequel il a été conçu. Certaines idées anti-berbéristes actuelles s'inscrivent en droite ligne - et il faut le souligner - dans la continuité historique d'un conflit, né déja dans les années 30, entre un groupe de jeunes nationalistes kabyles et la direction du PPA-MTLD. L'épreuve de force culminera avec la crise dite «berbériste» de 1949, dont I' étincelle aura été le vote majoritaire de la Fédération de France du mouvement national contre le sens, jugé trop «arabe et islamique», donné a l'orientation générale du parti. A cela, les jeunes nationalistes kabyles opposeront l'égalité des langues et des cultures berbère et arabe et se prononceront en faveur d'une «Algérie algérienne». La direction du parti dénoncera alors le «complot» fomenté par des «berbéro-matérialistes», dénomination qui se réfere a l'orientation laïque ou distante à l'égard de la religion de cette aile radicale du mouvement national, partisane d'une insurrection immédiate. Cet épisode, conjugué au fait que le Parti communiste algérien bénéficiait d'une certaine audience chez les Kabyles contribuera a renforcer l'anathème et déclenchera une persécution violente contre tous les éléments berbéristes ou supposés tels. Les Oulémas qualifieront ces revendications berberes de «doctrine réactionnaire de division impérialiste » et soutiendront une campagne sans mesure contre « tout ce qui de près ou de loin, touche au domaine berbère ». Leur organe d'information Al­Baṣâ'ir y jouera un rôle propagandiste de premiere importance. Bachir Al-Ibrahimi, auteur du texte que nous publions et que nous avons traduit de l’arabe est un des membres les plus importants du mouvement des Oulémas algériens.

This paper presents the study of the Sanusi Creed in Kabyle Berber (manuscript KA 21 from the Lmuhub Ulahbib library, Béjaïa, Algeria). The Introduction provides necessary background information on Berber languages, on the manuscript in question, the topic it discusses, and the Arabic sources. The core of this work consists of the detailed analysis of the original document. It presents the text of the manuscript in the Arabic script, a line-for-line Latin transliteration, a transcription with added punctuation, a translation into English, interlinear glosses, and word-by-word glosses and comments. The last chapter discusses some of the most interesting features encountered in the manuscript, summarises the study, and draws some conclusions.

The settlement mound Yasa tepe is situated situated 1,2 km South-East of the Thracian town of Kabyle  and 2 km North-East of the modern village of Kabyle, Yambol Municipality, Bulgaria. It was inhabited in the Late Neolithic, Early Chalcolithic, Early Bronze and Iron Ages. The most numerous structures revealed during excavations are Late Iron Age pits, which are the subject of this research.
A large amount of ceramic pottery fragments were found in the infill of the digging structures. The ceramic inventory includes amphorae and fast-potter's wheel made deep bowls. Fragments of handmade pots and bowls were also found in the pits' infill. In the embedded structures other objects, associated with the customs of the ancient Thracians, were found.
These pits are associated with the existence of a small satellite settlement in the hinterland of the Thracian town of Kabyle.

This paper describes the results of an acoustic experiment designed to test the properties of Kabyle Berber's "double" consonants. There is a debate in the literature as to whether these "double" consonants should be analyzed as geminate, long or fortis consonants. I outline the acoustic predictions which each of these labels entail, then measure the acoustic properties of a series of Kabyle words containing both singleton and "double" consonants. Based on the results of the experiment, I conclude that the label "fortis" is the most appropriate for Kabyle "double" consonants.

In the first decades of the 19th century, the Dutch officer and archeologist Jean Émile Humbert (1771-1839), during his stay in Tunisia, met a Kabyle from Iflisen Umellil who gave him a quantity of information about his language.
The report containing the linguistic materials gathered in that occasion (1823) is kept in Leiden, in the university library. All this material has ben hitherto almost ignored by all researchers of Berber languages and linguistics, and probably the few who cite it have never viewed it, because they seem to consider it as a small, unimportant specimen of language, while it is not the case. These notes consist of more than three hundred pages and contain a lot of linguistic material: a lexicon of almost 2,000 items, a short grammatical sketch and some original texts (three letters and a small number of short poems), which can be considered the oldest written documents of Kabyle. In particular, the communication will deal with the lexicon, as one of the oldest specimina in Kabyle lexicography.

Abstract
We propose here through a corpus of Berber (Kabyle) locutions containing the lexeme ul "heart", drawn mainly from dictionaries, to make the departure between idioms, collocations and free combinations of words. We will first approach the concepts of idiom and collocation, opposed to the free combination of words, trying to give definitions clear enough to be applied rigorously to our corpus, and will end with the analysis of our material and the resulting conclusions.

Nous nous proposons ici à travers un corpus de locutions berbères (kabyles) contenant le lexème ul « cœur », puisées essentiellement dans des dictionnaires, de faire le départ entre locutions figées, collocations et combinaisons libres de mots. Nous aborderons d’abord les concepts de locution figée et de collocation, opposées à la combinaison libre de mots, en essayant d’en donner des définitions suffisamment claires pour être appliquées rigoureusement à notre corpus, et terminerons par l’analyse de notre matériau et les conclusions qui en découlent.

Propunem, în acest studiu, printr-un corpus de locuții berbere (kabyle) care conțin lexemul ul „inimă”, extras, în principal, din dicționare, pentru a face diferențe între fraze fixe, colucuții și combinații libere de cuvinte. Mai întâi, vom aborda conceptele de locuție fixă și colocuție, opuse combinării libere a cuvintelor, încercând să oferim definiții suficient de clare pentru a fi aplicate riguros studiului nostru și vom încheia cu analiza materialului și a concluziilor rezultate.

This paper investigates copular and nonverbal predication in Kabyle Berber. Kabyle constructions involving copular predication are often translated with the verb ‘to be’ in English. In Chapter 1, I describe my aim and methodology, introduce my language consultant, and provide an outline of the constructions to be discussed. Chapters 2 through 5 treat these constructions in turn, while Chapter 6 gives additional examples. Finally (in Chapter 7), I summarize my findings and draw some conclusions.

The archaeological park “Thracian and Ancient town Kabyle” is situated 8 km northwest from the center of the town of Yambol. Systematic archaeological excavations on the site show that the first settlement appeared during the Late Bronze Age. During the Roman period, the town of Kabyle was an important in province Thrace and had military unit – auxilia.

In 2000, the staff of Regional historical museum in Yambol created the first “Festival of touristic attractions and animations” in the ancient town of Kabyle. One of the main aims of the event is to popularize the archaeological park as an attractive destination for touristic trips. One of the other aims of the festival is the presentation of different groups for historical re-enactment. The ruins in the ancient town are a natural background for different historical reconstructions.

Gradually, the festival in “Thracian and ancient town Kabyle” has become one of the biggest events for the presentation of different groups and historical reconstructions from the ancient to medieval period.

Nous proposons dans ce document une terminologie issue de différents lexiques sur le marché et d’autres venants de sites Internet dont les auteurs sont connus. Par ailleurs, nous proposons également des notations de certaines formes des jours, mois abrégés, et courts  Il contient 281 entrées qui une fois validées, seront intégrés dans les différents systèmes d’information et informatiques qui seront localisés en Kabyle. Ce lexique reprend les entrées « Gregorian » de la partie « Date & Time» du projet CLDR.

In books such as Le sens pratique, Pierre Bourdieu uses examples from a region in Algeria, Kabylia, to support his habitus theory. Kabylia is depicted as a traditional society, although in previous texts Bourdieu had presented it as the most modern region of Algeria. This article analyzes this discrepancy and the conditions that create it. Indeed, Bourdieu needed to portray Kabylia as a traditional society to support his habitus theory. This is the basis for reflection on the coherence of this element and the importance of primary socialization to explain action and the normality of adjusting a habitus to a situation.
En libros como Le sens pratique, Pierre Bourdieu sustenta su teoría del habitus con ejemplos de una región argelina, Cabilia. En ellos, Cabilia aparece como una sociedad tradicional, pero en textos anteriores Bourdieu la había presentado como la región más moderna de Argelia. En el presente artículo se analizan esta discordancia y sus condiciones de producción: Bourdieu requería presentar Cabilia como una sociedad tradicional con el fin de sustentar su teoría del habitus. Esto sirve para reflexionar sobre algunas características del habitus, como su coherencia, la importancia de la socialización primaria en la explicación de la acción, y la normalidad del ajuste del habitus a una situación.

A lo largo de la  historia la mujer ha ocupado  habitualmente un discreto segundo plano, destacando sólo aquellas que han realizado algún hecho excepcional. Esto es más evidente en el caso de La Kabilia (Argelia) donde la mujer ha sufrido una doble discriminación, por su condición femenina y como bereber.
Su silencio ha sido incluso más evidente por formar parte de una cultura oral marginada durante siglos. Las pocas mujeres bereberes que conocemos por su nombre son aquellas que se han comportado de forma atípica situándose entre el mito y la realidad. Si analizamos las obras referidas a La Kabilia de los siglos XVIII y XIX, han sido autores masculinos, y generalmente extranjeros, los que se han enzarzado en polémicas sobre el papel de la mujer, sin  que fueran ellas las que tomaran la palabra para reclamar un protagonismo social del que carecían en aquel momento.
Sin embargo, ninguna de estas circunstancias ha impedido que las kabilias alcen su voz para dejar constancia de sus deseos, frustraciones, sentimientos o inquietudes.
En esta contribución se intentará analizar a través de un género poético específico un modo muy particular de expresar todo aquello que no podía ser dicho en el seno de una sociedad demasiado excluyente para las mujeres.  El izli, poema de temática sentimental o erótica, pero también de crítica social, descubre entrelíneas infinidad de matices y connotaciones que dan rienda suelta a la expresión más íntima del secreto universo femenino y de la mitología colectiva. De este modo, ellas pueden, usando los símbolos de una sociedad dominante, dotarlos de un nuevo sentido que les permita liberarse y denunciar lo que las oprime.

Dans le contexte actuel, celui des nouvelles technologies, le besoin de traduire les outils et solutions informatiques vers le Kabyle fait face à l’indisponibilité d’une information pourtant basique pour mener rapidement et à terme ces travaux.
Il s’agit pourtant de données de base tel que la transcription des noms propres (pays, leurs capitales, leurs langues, leur monnaie, systèmes de mesures, nom des lieux, couleurs, systèmes de transcriptions …etc.)
Vu ce manque, et parallèlement aux travaux de traduction, nous avons lancé des travaux de transcription de ces données en Kabyle afin d’aider toute personne volontaire pour mener à bien ses travaux de traduction.
Nous proposons dans ce document une terminologie issue de différents lexiques sur le marché et d’autres venants de sites Internet dont les auteurs sont connus. Il contient 97 entrées qui une fois validées, seront intégrés dans les différents systèmes d’information et informatiques qui seront localisés en Kabyle. Ce lexique reprend les entrées « Catégorie » du projet CLDR.
Nous souhaitons que ce document soit critiqué, corrigé et amélioré pour fournir des données de qualité aux différents systèmes en cours de localisation

L’art traditionnel multimillénaire de la poterie s’étend à tous les massifs montagneux de l’Afrique du Nord, depuis le Haut atlas marocain et le rif, jusqu’en Tunisie, en passant par l’Algérie où il demeure le plus riche et le mieux conservé [1]. La poterie est une des grandes acquisitions de l'homme préhistorique en cours de néolithisation.  Les massifs centre-sahariens, Air, Tassili, Ahaggar et Tadrart Acacus, furent dès le XIe millénaire un des plus anciens foyers d'invention de la céramique au monde. Par rapport à la vannerie et au bois, la poterie représente un progrès décisif dans la société humaine  car elle peut aller au feu et améliorer la cuisson des aliments [2]. Les techniques de fabrication des poteries dans différentes régions d’Algérie sont à peu près les mêmes [3]. Ces poteries présentent des formes et des structures différentes et ont des origines multiples et variées [2].
    Dans cette étude, on s’intéresse à l’étude morphologique de la poterie. Pour arriver à cette fin, nous avons constitué une petite base de données à partir de documents décrivant la poterie Kabyle [4,5]. Nous avons concentré nos efforts sur les poteries provenant d’Ath Smail, Taourirt Amokrane, Ath Yenni, Ath Douala et Tifra.

Nous cherchons à établir la liste des couleurs en Kabyle/Tamaziɣt pour les besoins des nouvelles technologies (CSS et HTML).

En français ou en anglais, ils se sont basée dans la majorité des cas sur les noms de vegétaux ou nature en général. Nous ferons de même.

Dans ce fichier, la première colonne donne le nom de la couleur en Français. La troisième colonne correspond au nom en Kabyle/Tamaziɣt de l'objet qui correspond à la couleur. Nous avons reprise la couleur et son code selon les trois normes de repésentation informatiques.

Nous souhaitons compléter ce document afin de rendre possible et facile l'utilisation, la traduction et la production dans les domaines du graphisme et du Web.

Ce document sera ensuite soumis à validation à nos spécialistes et partagé en publique.

Women Leading Spiritual Resistance against the French Occupation in War and in Peace: the examples of Lalla Fatma N’Soumer (1830-1863) and Lalla Zaynab Al-Qâsimî (1850-1940)

Communication in the International Conference organized by the High Commission for Amazighity in Tebessa (Algeria) : Women's Resistance in North Africa from Antiquity to the 19th Century. 28-30 September 2019.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: 
Si Mohand ou-Mhand, the troubled “bohémien” poet who sang both love and the tragedy of a people, is rightly regarded as the national poet of the Berbers of Kabylia.
He was struck, with all his family, by the harsh colonial repression and forced to a life of misery. Nevertheless, the misfortunes that punctuate his life could not bend him, and the will of redemption expressed through the poetic word has made him the symbol of resistance to injustice and to the arrogance of the most powerful.
In his ISEFRA, concise compositions that allow, in their brevity, to effectively express a wide range of different feelings, he describes the joys of love but also the pain of exile and loneliness, the fall into vice, his longing for a time irreparably lost, his contempt for petty profiteers, and his complex but intense relationship with God.
The work of Si Mohand, already translated into French, Spanish, English, Dutch, Arabic, Russian, is now being made available to the Italian public, enriched by an extensive introduction and explanatory notes.

SUNTO ITALIANO:  Si Mohand ou-Mhand, l'infelice poeta bohémien che cantò insieme l'amore e la tragedia di un popolo, è a giusto titolo considerato il poeta nazionale dei Berberi della Cabilia.
Travolto con tutta la sua famiglia dalla dura repressione coloniale e costretto ad una vita di miseria, le sventure che costellarono la sua vita non bastarono a piegarlo, e la volontà di riscatto espressa attraverso la parola poetica ne ha fatto il simbolo della resistenza all'ingiustizia e alla prepotenza del più forte.
Nei suoi ISEFRA, agili composizioni che permettono, nella loro concisione, di esprimere con efficacia i sentimenti più diversi, egli descrive le gioie dell'amore ma anche i dolori dell'esilio e della solitudine, la caduta nel vizio, la nostalgia per un tempo irrimediabilmente perduto, il disprezzo per i meschini approfittatori, ed un complesso ma intenso rapporto con Dio.

The dissertation investigates the internal structure and the predicate-argument structure of verbs of (change of) state in Tamazight (Berber), including unaccusatives, spatial configuration verbs, causatives,
and those traditionally referred to as verbs of quality in the linguistic literature on Tamazight.
In Chapter One I provide a general outline of the dissertation and state the objectives pursued. In Chapter Two I sketch out the theoretical framework adopted, which is a combination of lexical and conceptual semantics on the one hand, and the Minimalist Program / Government and Binding on the other hand.

Chapter Three is devoted to verbs of quality. The peculiarity of this class of verbs is that they occur with nominative clitics when they indicate a change of state or a resultative state, but with accusative clitics when they indicate a pure state. In passing, the combination of verbs of quality with accusative clitics constitutes counterevidence to the view that intransitive verbs do not assign accusative Case.
I argue that verbs of quality have the monadic structure [Vstate[√ROOT]] when they indicate a pure state, and the dyadic structure [Vinch[Vstate[√ROOT]]] when they indicate a change of state or a resultative state. The change of state interpretation (inchoative interpretation henceforth) is to be viewed from the perspective of the initial (or higher) event undergoing change, while the resultative state is to be understood from the perspective of the final (or lower) state. I account for the differences between these two interpretations in terms of a scope operator associated with two distinct positions. When the operator is in [Spec, Vinch], the structure yields a change of state interpretation. On the other hand, when the operator is in [Spec, Vstate] the structure yields a resultative interpretation. This analysis carries over to the class of unaccusative verbs.
In Chapter Four I further elaborate on the differences between the accusative and the nominative clitics associated with verbs of quality, and their syntactic positions. I argue that the accusative form is associated with a defective T, lacking the EPP effect (Chomsky 2000, 2001), which explains why the clitic fails to raise to the subject position. By contrast, the nominative form involves a non-defective T, therefore the clitic raises to the subject position.
In Chapter Five I demonstrate that verbs of spatial configuration are disguised reflexives and have the triadic structure [Vact[Vinch[Vstate([√ROOT])]]]. I explain that the reflexive interpretation results from the association of the internal argument with two thematic positions, which correspond to [Spec, Vact] and [Spec, Vinch].
Chapter Six is devoted to causative verbs, both lexical and morphological. I argue that lexical causatives have a transitive basic structure while morphological causatives have an intransitive basic structure. Accordingly, I demonstrate that the transitive structure of morphological causatives is derived by augmenting the intransitive structure with a causative layer. I further contrast lexical causatives that alternate with the intransitive use with those that do not have an intransitive alternate. I conclude that
transitive / intransitive alternating causatives are derived by conflating the lexical root with the lower event (BE)COME, while exclusively transitive causatives are derived by conflating the lexical root directly
with the higher event CAUSE. This idea also explains why verbs belonging to the same semantic class alternate in some languages but not in others.

The dissertation investigates the internal structure and the predicate-argument structure of verbs of (change of) state in Tamazight (Berber), including unaccusatives, spatial configuration verbs, causatives, and those traditionally referred to as verbs of quality in the linguistic literature on Tamazight. In Chapter One I provide a general outline of the dissertation and state the objectives pursued. In Chapter Two I sketch out the theoretical framework adopted, which is a combination of lexical and conceptual semantics on the one hand, and the Minimalist Program / Government and Binding on the other hand. Chapter Three is devoted to verbs of quality. The peculiarity of this class of verbs is that they occur with nominative clitics when they indicate a change of state or a resultative state, but with accusative clitics when they indicate a pure state.
