ABSTRACT This paper discusses a knowledge-based model for the design and development of units of learning and teaching aids. The idea behind this model originates from both the analysis of the open issues in instructional authoring systems, and the lack of a well-defined process able to merge pedagogical strategies with systems for the knowledge organization of the domain. In particular, it is presented the Educational Concept Map (ECM): a, pedagogically founded (derived from instructional design theories), abstract annotation system that was developed with the aim of guaranteeing the reusability of both teaching materials and knowledge structures. By means of ECMs, it is possible to design lessons and/or learning paths from an ontological structure characterized by the integration of hierarchical and associative relationships among the educational objectives. The paper also discusses how the ECMs can be implemented by means of the ISO/IEC 13250 Topic Maps standard. Based on the same model, it is also considered the possibility of visualizing, through a graphical model, and navigate, through an ontological browser, the knowledge structure and the relevant resources associated to them.

Abstract The paper shows how a knowledge-based approach can be followed to integrate alarm correlation functionality into traffic monitoring and control systems. High variability of object features and bad local feature separation of object classes are the main causes for the difficulties encountered during the interpretation of ground-level natural scenes. The authors propose a knowledge-based scene classification and segmentation method. The first stage carries out object classification on the basis of known local feature default models. It then searches for regions which satisfy qualitative constraints in the classified object images and selects good, approximate object region candidates, using multiple features. This approach is constrained in a top-down manner by the local feature default model and qualitative constraints while at the same time operating in a data-driven style through automatic threshold value and window size selection mechanisms. ABSTRACT This paper aims to demonstrate the development of an expert code generator using rule-based and frames knowledge representation techniques (ECG-RF). The ECG-RF system presented in this paper is a passive code generator that carries out the task of automatic code generation in fixed-structure software. To develop an ECG-RF system, the artificial intelligence (AI) of rule-based system and frames knowledge representation techniques was applied to a code generation task. ECG-RF fills a predefined frame of a certain fixed-structure program with code chunks retrieved from ECG-RF's knowledge base. The filling operation is achieved by ECG-RF's inference engine and is guided by the information collected from the user via a graphic user interface (GUI). In this paper, an ECG-RF system for generating a device driver program is presented and implemented with VBasic software. The results show that the ECG-RF design concept is reasonably reliable.

ABSTRACT In this paper, a genetic-based neuro-fuzzy approach is proposed to build and optimize fuzzy models. The learning algorithm of the fuzzy-neural network is divided into three phases. The first phase is used to find the initial membership functions of the fuzzy model. In the second phase, a new algorithm is developed to find the linguistic fuzzy rules. In the third phase, a new technique is used to apply a genetic algorithm to tune the membership functions of the fuzzy model optimally. Abstract : NEtwork Modeling Environment for Structural Intervention Strategies (NEMESIS) is a collaboration and integration environment for state-of-the-art network organizational analysis tools. It provides a mechanism for versioning of collaborative artifacts such as models and reports that is coordinated with analysts' workflow (in the form of local task lists), for maximum convenience and minimum obtrusiveness. The NEMESIS integration architecture is bus-oriented and is centered around an XML Schema based language named Organizational Description Language (ODL), which provides a basis for tools to communicate but also provides a means to accommodate the unique data representation needs of specific tools. One network analytical tool, Adaptive Safety and Monitoring (ASAM). matches transactions against a pattern library and manages the uncertainties of the association. ASAM was extended in the second year of NEMESIS to include multiple model tracking, multiple hypothesis testing, and feature-aided tracking. The result was evaluated by SMEs, and their feedback was incorporated. Another tool, Organizational Risk Analysis (ORA), uses an extended dynamic social network representation to determine organizational strengths and vulnerabilities. ORA was evaluated by SMEs, and their feedback was incorporated. A TIE with Cycorp allowed knowledge from their Terrorism Knowledge Base to be translated to ODL so that the NEMESIS integration environment could feed the result to ORA. Statistical packages, optimisation packages and numerical-algorithms libraries are widely used in industrial and scientific development environments. They represent an enormous body of very complex and valuable knowledge that is becoming increasingly difficult to access. End users of these systems have to cope simultaneously with the intricacies of the software and with the increasing complexity of the application-domain problems. For these systems, knowledge-based front ends can provide co-operative assistance to end users, enabling them to use the systems successfully, while preserving the knowhow contained in the libraries and packages. They are also valuable in extending the software's working life. FOCUS is an ESPRIT-2 project whose goal is to develop generic tools and techniques for constructing and maintaining KBFEs for open user systems (e.g. libraries, reusable software components) and closed user systems (e.g. free-standing software, packages) for industrial and scientific applications. The participating partners are drawn from both industrial and academic institutions, providing a wide crosssection of software researchers, producers and users, and, although there are substantial research objectives, the project has taken a pragmatic approach, with the commercialisation of products developed playing a prominent role. The paper describes part of the work undertaken during the twenty-fourth month of the ESPRIT II project, which began in December 1988 and ran for four years. The aims of the FOCUS project are stated, and a core element of the emerging FOCUS design strategy is described, namely a separable architecture for knowledge-based front ends, concentrating on the front-end harness, the problem solver and the back-end manager components. Some KBFEs developed using this architecture, and the tools created within the project that operate in the domain of forecasting, are also described.

Case-based reasoning (CBR) systems rely on the conceptual ordering of entities called cases. If atomic case features are allowed to assume numeric as well as symbolic values, then a systematic comparison regime is needed to aggregate similarity scores. A common approach to deal with real-numbered features is normalisation. However, there are two conspicuous problems with this procedure: the similarity between two features is dependent on the corresponding values of all other cases to be ranked; and real-numbered features are often interpreted by human experts according to conceptual constraints associated with features. In such situations, a conceptual distance between two features should be determined rather than the length of a `gap' on a linear scale.
