Late Roman Amphorae

The excavations carried out on the area of the formar Cossar property at Aquileia, held by the Padua University, reported significant ammount of ceramics oginated from the so-called “Levantine” zones: from Cyprus, Cilicia and from the Sirian and Palestinian area. The examined shards refered mainly to amphorae but some vessels in Eastern terra sigillata
(ETS) and Levantine Cooking Ware (LCW) are also documented. As a whole these products are attested with a lower percentage compared to the many pottery finds coming from other Eastern Mediterranean regions. Nevertheless, we will attempt detailed analysis of these materials in order to testify size and nature of trade transformations which involved Aquileia and the Near East from Late Repubblican period to the 6th century AD.

In 2007 a symposium was held at Texas A&M University to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Texas A&M University Press’s publication of the first volume reporting the Yassiada shipwreck site. Seventeen papers from that symposium featured in this book broadly illustrate such varied topics as ships and seafaring life, maritime trade, naval texts, commercial cargoes, and recent developments in the analysis of the Yassiada ship itself.

The objective of this study is to deal with the long-term characters and consumption patterns in the Venetian lagoon in the period ranging from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages on the basis of existing archaeological documentation. The most archaeologically visible materials and, namely, pottery, amphorae and glass were materials taken into consideration. As a consequence of this analysis, three principal periods have been identified. A first phase, in Late Antiquity, documents a reasonably widespread circulation of imported Mediterranean ceramics (African and Eastern) and amphorae originating from the same areas. Along with a significant number of imports from distant places, this period also saw imports such as coarse pottery, single-fired glazed pottery and glass from neighbouring areas. This data seems to indicate a certain vitality in the lagoon in this period, which could be related to it being central to the traffic of the new political orders in the North Adriatic. Moreover, the following period, from the 8th to the 10th Century, coincided with a period of the stabilization and of institutional consolidation of a number of lagoon settlements as in Torcello and the same Olivolo/Rialto. It also marked a total decline in imports of both wide and medium range along with a significant reduction in the use of coarse cooking pottery and glass kitchenware. The sole exception is represented by single-fired glazed pottery produced in the North Adriatic which during the 9th and 11th Centuries was widespread in the lagoon. It is probable that this situation is a snapshot of a change that occurred in the behaviour of the lagoon communities and underscores close links to the Po valley and continental worlds rather than a loosening of economic and commercial ties, indirectly confirmed by written sources and by findings of moneys and amphorae. Therefore, it could also have been a symptom of cultural distance with reference models of the Byzantine area. At the same time, it was in this period that the production of glass was consolidated as represented by the Torcello context, if this can be dated from the 9th Century and not from the 7th as originally proposed. A change in this field was only registered after the year 1000 A.D. even if there were only few Mediter-ranean imports during the 11th Century consisting, currently, in a Constantinople 'Glazed White Ware' from the Monastery of Saints Hillary and Benedict in Gambarare (Mira) and a few fragments of Egyptian 'Fayyumi Ware' from Jesolo. Despite long commercial relations between Venice and Byzantium, on the one hand, and Islam (in particular Egypt) on the other, no changes in the lagoon elite, especially with reference to ceramics and as seen from the materials, occurred until well into the 12th Century. The 6th International Conference on Late Roman Coarse Wares, Cooking Wares and Amphorae in the Mediterranean: Archaeology and Archaeometry (LRCW 6) will be held in Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) from Tuesday 24th to Saturday 27th of May 2017. On Sunday 28th May there will be an opportunity for a post-congress excursion to Villa del Casale near Piazza Armerina (Enna).
After Barcelona (2002), Aix-en-Provence (2005), Parma-Pisa (2008), Thessaloniki (2011) and Alexandria (2014), Agrigento will host the conference organized by the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples, in collaboration with the University of Palermo and Soprintendenza of Agrigento.
The LRCW 6 Conference will comprise oral and poster presentations of Late Roman pottery found in the Mediterranean region.
Abstracts of 300 words maximum should be submitted to the conference address (lrcw6conference@gmail.com) in Word format including: title (in capitals), name(s), institution, email address of the author(s), and 5 key-words.  The abstracts will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee. The deadline for abstract submission is 30th September 2016.

Depuis 1996, une mission conjointe de la Direction Générale des Antiquités et du Centre Polonais d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne de l’Université de Varsovie mène des travaux archéologiques sur le site antique de Chhîm-Merjiyat. Les vestiges d’un village romain et byzantin comprennent un sanctuaire païen ainsi qu’une basilique byzantine, des maisons, des huileries et une nécropole située au Nord-Ouest de la zone habitée. Les fouilles dévoilent une image très rich d’un établissement rural situé entre Béryte et Sidon et qui florissait entre le Ier et le VIIIème siècle ap. J.-C.

Il corso si propone di fornire le linee guida per lo studio dell’Instrumentum Domesticum e della cultura materiale dei secoli tardo antichi ed alto medievali, con lezioni frontali in aula ed esercitazioni pratiche a cura dei massimi specialisti del settore.

Lezioni • Il corso, in lingua italiana, avrà inizio lunedì 7 marzo e terminerà venerdì 11 marzo. Venerdì 11 marzo, nel pomeriggio, sarà previsto un esame per verificare quanto appreso in aula.

Attestato • Al termine del ciclo di lezioni verrà rilasciato un attestato di partecipazione per il numero delle ore effettivamente frequentate: nel caso di frequentazione di tutto il corso e di passaggio dell’esame, l’attestato sarà equivalente ad un totale di 6 crediti universitari. In the summer of 2019, a Roman shipwreck with an amphorae cargo was discovered in Ses Fontanelles (SW of Mallorca). A rescue excavation has uncovered approximately a third of the materials, which are being studied. This paper focuses on the inscriptions (tituli picti) on the amphorae (mostly Almagro 51C), an exceptional find, given their high number as well as the type of writing. We analyze and relate paleography with other amphorae painted inscriptions in particular and epigraphical documents in general; we also relate the tituli with the content of the containers in their archaeological context and we approximate a prosopographical study of the anthroponyms that appear in the tituli. Finally, we link the cargo data with those of other imperial shipwrecks. Being quantitatively the most important corpus of painted amphoric epigraphy in Hispania, the wreck is revealed as a key piece to understand more clearly the socioeconomic history of the 4th century AD.

A lo largo de la Antigüedad y la Edad Media la península Ibérica y el Magreb compartieron un rico pasado común favorecido por su estrecha proximidad geográfica. Pese a las recientes investigaciones centradas en la relación entre ambas orillas, los datos conocidos para el sector oriental de la península todavía se limitan principalmente a las fuentes escritas. CERAFRICS es un proyecto hispano-francés que busca definir la naturaleza e intensidad de las relaciones económicas entre el Levante peninsular y el Magreb a partir un análisis innovador y multidisciplinar basado en la evidencia cerámica. El proyecto, auspiciado por la Casa de Velázquez, se plantea en colaboración entre la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y el Centre Camille Jullian con el apoyo del Museo Arqueológico de Águilas. Cronológicamente se extiende desde los últimos siglos del Imperio Romano hasta las desconocidas fases de época emiral (s. IV-X d.C.), un complejo periodo de transición que es necesario analizar desde la perspectiva de la longue durée.

The Soprintendenza BB.CC.AA. of Palermo carried out in  Piazza Bologni an excavation in trench in the western area of the square. It was important to investigate a key sector of the city, located near Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the road axis, which, since ancient times, has been the most important street for the urban development of Palermo.
Excavation has shown that this area of the city has been frequented without interruption from the first half of the 6 th century BC to the present days and – despite the complexity of urban excavation – it was possible to isolate some significant contexts. The in-depth study of the amphorae fragments allows for interesting observations namely on the circulation of transport vessels during the last quarter of the 4 th and the first half of the 3 rd centuries BC.

çalışma, Müzenin teşhir salonları ile depolarında bulunan tüm ticari
amphoraların detaylı olarak incelenmesi sonucunda oluşturulmuştur.
Antik Çağ’da zeytinyağı ve şarap başta olmak üzere tarımsal kökenli
hammaddeler kullanılarak üretilmiş ürünlerin denizaşırı ticaretinde
kullanılmış ticari amphoralar; üretim yerlerine, üretim dönemlerine
ve içlerinde taşınan ürüne göre farklılaşan formlara sahiptir. Aynı
zamanda üreticinin, kalitenin, üretim zamanının, denetleyicinin ve
vergilendirmenin göstergesi olarak yorumlanabilecek farklı mühürler,
yazılar ve şekillerle işaretlendikleri de görülür. Ege, Akdeniz ve
Karadeniz’de yürütülen denizaşırı ticaret sonucunda amphoraların
içinde taşınan ürünler; İspanya’dan Levant’a, Afrika’dan, Avrasya
steplerine kadar geniş bir coğrafyaya ulaşmıştır. Bu sayede Antik
dünyanın ticaret merkezlerinden çok kapsamlı, karşılıklı ve organize
bir zeytinyağı ve şarap (ayrıca diğer sıvı yağlar, fermente balık ürünleri,
tuzlanmış balıklar, pekmezler, kurutulmuş meyveler, kuruyemişler,
tahıl ve hububat vs.) ticareti gerçekleştirilmiştir İzmir Arkeoloji
Müzesi ticari amphoraları arasından seçilerek bu kitapta sunulmuş
151 örnek; Antik Çağ’da İzmir çevresindeki tarım, sanayi, ticaret,
ulaşım, ekonomi, beslenme ve sosyal hayat hakkında eskilerden bize
ulaşmış doğrudan kanıtlardır. Bilim camiasının yanında, insanlığın
köklerine ilgi duyan ve tarihi bir liman kenti olan İzmir’in geçmişini
merak eden geniş bir kitlenin; bu kitaptaki bilgiden faydalanması
umudundayız. İzmir’in tarım ürünleri ticaretinin merkezinde bulunan,
ayrıca ticari tarım ürünlerinin tanıtımını gerçekleştiren ve geçmişine
sahip çıkan İzmir Ticaret Borsasına bu kitabın basımını üstlendiği
için teşekkürlerimizi sunarız.

The 'Marea' project of the University of Warsaw expanded the program to survey and excavate in the northern and eastern parts of the city in order to establish the character and chronology of the structures there. The eastern waterfront was uncovered, along with the adjacent latrines, streets and buildings, which are presumed to be residential. The structures which were examined were very regularly formed and involved large-scale earthworks. They were built no earlier than the mid-6th century AD, and, although their purpose sometimes changed, they remained in use until about the mid-8th century AD. Accumulations of Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic date were discovered, including the oldest remains this season, that is, a row of locally-manufactured amphorae serving an unexplained purpose.
