Literatura Judaica

'Los judíos y las palabras' llama la atención del poder de recepción de la escritura y enseña de manera extraordinaria una doble continuidad en lo que hoy podemos entender como judaísmo: en la autoría entre padre e hija y en el título entre los judíos y las palabras. Los judíos están íntimamente relacionados con las palabras y las palabras son reconocidas como más antiguas que el hombre. Entre los judíos, padre e hija en este caso, y las palabras, entre padre e hija, no hay sino interpretaciones que registrarían en el fondo la relación entre los judíos y las palabras. La continuidad entre los judíos y las palabras no muestra, por tanto, una línea de sangre, sino una línea de texto. Las palabras son, también, más antiguas que el judaísmo.

History of the Sabbatian Movement was the first attempt by one of the giants of scholarship on Jewish mysticism, Gershom Scholem (1897-1982), to present a comprehensive picture of Sabbatianism as a single narrative. The book is based on the series of lectures given at the Hebrew University during 1939-1940, which are of special importance in that they laid the foundation for all of Scholem’s research in the years to come, including his extensive monograph Sabbatai Sevi: the mystical Messiah, 1626-1676, first published in 1957. What follows is a sketch of the massive History of the Sabbatian Movement, over which Gershom Scholem toiled his whole life but never completed. The lectures are presented here for the first time based on the original manuscripts, alongside the text of an additional series of lectures that Scholem gave as part of the “Month of Study” organized by Berl Katznelson in 1941. These long-hidden texts reveal new facets of the Sabbatian movement and its history, as well as of Gershom Scholem as a historian, and serve as prologue to any further study of this most stormy and complicated episode in Jewish history. The new edition includes a comprehensive introduction by the editors on all of Gershom Scholem’s studies on Sabbatianism. //---//

In the following article we will examine at length some of the dynamics by which R. Yosef Hayyim of Baghdad—the renowned Ben Ish Hai (1834–1909) - integrated Kabbalah into daily life, and the complex way that he combined the teachings of the Rashash with simplified, esoteric practices meant for the general public. Needless to say, the relationship between the Kabbalists of Jerusalem and R. Yosef Hayyim illuminates a fascinating chapter in the history of Kabbalah in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.

One of the more astounding books produced by Bratslav Hasidism is Liqquṭei tefilot (1822–1827), composed by R. Nathan Sternhartz of Nemirov, which established a whole new genre in Bratslav literature. This article discusses the book's genesis, publication, and primary goals, as well as the controversy it generated. The new Bratslav theology that emerged after the death of Rabbi Naḥman led to disputes, both internal and external, over the role and character of R. Nathan. Examining this particularly obscure chapter in the early history of Bratslav Hasidism sheds light on the movement as it exists today in all its diversity, both ideological and social. The satirical writings of Lucian of Samosata had a tremendous influence on the literature of the Eastern European Haskalah, shaping its criticism of the burgeoning Hasidic movement in the nineteenth century as if there were no gap between it and the Roman Empire of the second century. Lucian’s criticism of false prophets, self-proclaimed philosophers, and common fools and frauds, like his satirical dialogues with the world of the dead, provided the perfect model for those Maskilim who opposed the revelations of the Hasidic movement in both theological and social realms. One particularly salient testimony to the classical satirist’s influence is the astounding translation of his story “Alexander the False Prophet” by the Maskilic writer Meir Letteris, the first translation of Lucian’s work into Hebrew. The translation, printed in full below, was based on the German edition of Christoph Martin Wieland and published in the journal Ha-Tsefirah, which Letteris edited in 1823. As with every translation, it is a new product, shaped in and by its own context. This essay discusses the tendencies and apparent goals of the translator, the additions and omissions he made to the text, and the influence of Lucian’s satirical style on the Haskalah.

Jonatan Meir, “The Politics of Printing the Book Sefer Likutei Tefilot"

This essay discusses one of the more astounding books produced by Bratslav Hasidism – Likutei Tefilot, composed by R. Nathan Sternharz of Nemirov between 1822 and 1827. Notable enough for its content alone, the book also established a whole new genre in Bratslav literature, a fact requiring examination of the book’s genesis, the context of its printing, and its primary goals, as well as the controversy that erupted around it. The new Bratslav theology that emerged upon the death of Rabbi Nahman at the end of 1810[, and which was articulated in Likutei Tefilot,] carried with it a number of ramifications for the small group that had begun to gather around the tsadik, including the eruption of disputes, both internal and external, over [the role and character of] Rabbi Natan of Nemirov. This is a particularly obscure chapter in the history of Bratslav Hasidism, which as a whole remains under-explored by modern scholars; a careful examination of the initiation and crystallization of Bratslav Hasidism in its early stages will shed light on the movement as it exists today in all its diversity, both ideological and social.

Jonatan Meir, "The Discovery and Publication of Joseph Perl’s Yiddish Writings"

The attitude of Tarnopol satirist Joseph Perl (1773–1839) towards the Yiddish language has been discussed by a number of scholars. In particular, researchers have examined his views with regard to his most well-known satire, Sefer Megaleh temirin, which was printed in Hebrew in Vienna, 1819, with a partial Yiddish translation of the work appearing in Vilna, 1938. However, there remains much to be said concerning the creative process which guided Perl’s writing in Yiddish, as well as the later discovery and publication of his Yiddish works, both of which are chapters in the wider story of the development of Yiddish literature in the first half of the nineteenth century and the increasing scholarly interest in it at the outset of the twentieth century. This article briefly describes these multifaceted matters and then offers suggestions for the future study of Perl’s writing in particular, and maskilic Yiddish literature in general.

Michael Levi Rodkinson (1845–1904) was a journalist, author, and publisher whose literary projects spanned numerous countries and continents. Hero to some and scoundrel to others, Rodkinson was a polemical figure whose beliefs underwent many transformations over the course of his life, most significantly from Hasidism to combative Haskalah to eventually anticipating the neo-Romantic trends of the early twentieth century. Throughout his career, Rodkinson’s writing challenged the familiar genres of the literature of Hasidism and the Haskalah, shaping the religious realities of his readers and articulating a spiritual and community life among Jews, who took his ideas to heart in surprising ways.Today, Rodkinson is frequently referred to as a minor Hasidic author and publisher, a characterization based on the criticism of his opponents rather than on his writings. In Literary Hasidism, Meir draws upon those writings and their reception to present a completely different picture of this colorful and influential writer. Examining Rodkinson’s lifelong role as a catalyzing agent of different cultural phenomena, his diverse publishing activities, and his writings in their respective stages, Meir grants readers a provocative new vantage point from which to consider this divisive, enigmatic figure.

Jewish mysticism has many forms. In his epochal Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, Gershom Scholem however defined Luranic Kabbalah, Sabbatianism, and Hasidim as three different stages in the same process of mystical articulation. In his wake, various scholars of Jewish Thought have since pursued the interrelationship of the two latter ones: Wherein lie the possible origins and sources of the Hasidic movement within the Sabbatean movement? How and which respect can the formation of the Hasidic movement be understood as a (critical) response to the Sabbatean and Frankist movements? And what role played the Baal Shem Tov, the paradigmatic figure and founder of Hasidism, and his circle in this regard?
The aim of this workshop is to shed light on these questions by an attempted close reading of a central and foundational source of Hasidism, the Shivhei ha-BeSHT (In Praise of the Baal Shem Tov).

The workshop will be held by Prof. Dr. Jonatan Meir of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Prof. Meir is currently associate professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His
research interests include the History of the Jews in Eastern Europe, Jewish Polemics, Jewish Mysticism, the Haskalah Movement, Hasidism, and Contemporary Kabbalah. Americana", de Philip Roth. Ganhador do prêmio Pulitzer em 1997, o livro conta
a história de Sueco Levov, um judeu assimilado cuja filha comete atos terroristas
nos anos 60. A partir desse foco familiar, o autor explora a adaptação e rejeição
do sonho americano por judeus de diversas gerações.

Este artigo analisa Judas, o mais recente romance (2014) do escritor israelense Amós Os. Nessa obra de ficção, Oz utiliza o contexto da suposta traição do apóstolo Judas, narrada nos Evangelhos, e o delicado relacionamento afetivo entre um jovem universitário e uma viúva de guerra de meia idade para abordar as intensas controvérsias no interior do movimento sionista nos anos que antecederam a criação do Estado de Israel, com veementes acusações de traição contra os militantes que se opuseram à linha hegemônica da Organização Sionista e da Agência Judaica - propunham a criação de um estado binacional - e tentativas de deslegitimá-los.

A publicação, em 2012, de O que os cegos estão sonhando? remexe, ainda uma vez, no delicado território do trauma resultante da tragédia e suas repercussões nos descendentes das vítimas; aqui, segunda e terceira gerações, de certa forma condenadas a viver sob o peso do trauma, da família traumatizada. A memória da vítima, registrada em forma de diário-mas, em desacordo com o usual, com o esperado pelo leitor, diário registrado após os fatos-, recoloca a questão da fidedignidade, da confiabilidade da memória, da relação entre os fatos "como ocorreram", e seu retrabalho pelas lembranças, pelos desejos, pelos relatos de outros sobreviventes. Além do diário de Lili Jaffe, o livro contém reflexões de sua filha Noemi Jaffe e também um capítulo escrito por sua neta, Leda Cartum. O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre os desdobramentos da chamada "Literatura de testemunho", setenta anos depois da barbárie nazista, bem como sua ressignificação pelos descendentes, que não viveram os fatos mas são, de alguma forma, afetados pela simples presença, efetiva ou simbólica, da vítima. Propõe-se, ainda, a conveniência da adoção, para apreciação de obras da "Literatura de testemunho", do conceito de "gerações de escritos", em função de sua distância temporal em relação aos fatos. Resumo A inserção (ou dificuldade de) do imigrante na sociedade de recepção é afetada não só pela forma em que esta sociedade o recebe (ou discrimina), mas também por como o imigrante se sente recebido (ou discriminado). Este fenômeno não é específico do imigrante, mas ocorre com quaisquer grupos minoritários e pode se evidenciar na literatura produzida por escritores oriundos desses grupos. Este artigo busca analisar, em contos do escritor judeu-polonês-brasileiro Samuel Rawet, o efeito que a percepção do olhar da população hegemônica exerce sobre a busca de identidade do imigrante, do indivíduo oriundo de uma minoria. Abstract The immigrant's insertion (or difficulty of) in the receiving society is affected not only by the way in which this society receives (or discriminates against) him/her, but also by how the immigrant feels him/herself received (or discriminated against). This phenomenon is not specific to immigrants, but occurs with any minority group, and is often evidenced in the literature produced by writers coming from these groups. This article seeks to analyze, in short stories of Jewish-Polish-Brazilian writer Samuel Rawet, the effects that the perception by the immigrant of the gaze of the hegemonic population exerts on his/her search for identity.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a presença de elementos de estranhamento e alienação no romance O Planeta do Sr. Sammler, de Saul Bellow, temas frequentes na obra desse autor. Nesse romance, tais características ganham uma forma peculiar, trazendo esses conceitos a uma reflexão acerca do conflito de gerações, do trauma do Holocausto e da posição do judeu na diversificada sociedade americana.

Este artigo busca analisar o papel das personagens femininas no romance Herzog , de Saul Bellow. Embora seja protagonizado por Moses Herzog, um homem, as mulheres desempenham um papel fundamental na obra de Saul Bellow. Alem de um divorcio ser a forca-motriz do romance, eis que esse acontecimento deixa Moses no estado mental que dita suas acoes ao longo da obra, as personagens femininas sao uma continuacao dos sentimentos de Herzog em relacao a identidade judaica. Moses busca, nos relacionamentos afetivos, a recuperacao de diferentes aspectos da relacao que teve com sua mae.
