Medieval Grammar

This volume delves into significant chapters of Platonic philosophy, encompassing its pre-Socratic origins and subsequent developments. It particularly focuses on the relationship between Plato's logico-semantics and his metaphysics. Plato's linguistic views are deeply rooted in his metaphysical system, and vice versa. The strong connection between the two and their development into the Middle Ages form a major subject of this volume. Other themes explored in this book include Plato's philosophy of nature, his epistemology, theology, cosmology, conception of the soul, and, finally, his philosophy of art.

IRÈNE ROSIER: Grammar, Logic, Semantic. Two Conflicting Doctrines in the Thirteenth Century: Roger Bacon and the Modistae The complex interplay between grammar and logic in the 12th and 13th centuries is an important element in understanding the development of these two disciplines. Two 13th century doctrines (the Modistae's and Roger Bacon's) show a strong coherence in their logico-semantic and grammatical theories, but rely on diametrically opposed assumptions about language: the Modistae seek to base themselves on the universal and stable (logical and grammatical) properties of a timeless language, Bacon on the variability of language and the freedom of the speaker to change the meaning of words as of constructions, thus enabling mm to take into account the evolution of language. The differences between the two conceptions explain the contradictory answers of the Modistae and Roger Bacon to the important linguistic questions of the latter half of the 13th century.

Priscians Institutiones Grammaticae , which rely on Stoic and Neoplatonic sources, constituted an important, although quite neglected, link in the chain of transmission of ancient philosophy in the Middle Ages. There is, in particular, a passage where Priscian discusses the vexed claim that common names can be proper names of the universal species and where he talks about the ideas existing in the divine mind. At the beginning of the 12th century, the anonymous Glosulae super Priscianum and the Notae Dunelmenses , which heavily quote William of Champeaux (as master G.), interpret the passage in the context of a growing interest in the problem of universais, raising semantic as well as ontological questions, and introducing a Platonic view on universais in the discussions on the signification of the noun. Moreover, this same passage will be used by Abelard to elaborate one of his opinions about the signification of universal or common names-that they signify "mental conceptions".

Nebrija crea la terminología propia de la Gramática sobre la lengua castellana. No solo se limita a traducir los términos latinos. Ello supone indagar con profundidad en las estructuras de la lengua que codifica. De este modo el término innovador, que suele ser un vocablo del léxico general de la época, puede llegar a definir conceptos y relaciones, hasta ese momento inadvertidos, que anuncian “descubrimientos” de la lingüística moderna. Nebrija crea así una nueva acepción técnica para una palabra hasta ese momento de uso corriente. Rodríguez Gallardo (2010) ha mostrado cómo mediante el uso técnico de dos palabras hasta ese momento de uso no especializado, como eran ordenar y aiuntar, el gramático de Lebrija intuye la distinción técnica, hoy generalizada en los estudios gramaticales, de “argumento” y “adjunto”, pues usa sistemáticamente ordenar para ‘seleccionar un argumento’ y aiuntar para referirse a los complementos no seleccionados, o sea, a los adjuntos. Siguiendo la pista descubierta por Rodríguez Gallardo me propongo, en el trabajo que me gustaría ofrecer como homenaje a Antonio Salvador, describir el significado técnico que creo poseen las palabras rodeo y sentir y sentimiento aplicadas a construcciones y estructuras lingüísticas en la Gramática de Nebrija.

Il contributo prende in esame le peculiarità paleografiche e codicologiche dei codici di ars dictaminis, evidenziando la presenza di una determinata forma-libro, associata a specifici testi e autori del dictamen, come anche a specifici contesti geografici. In tal senso, gli ambiti maggiormente indagati sono stati quelli emiliano-bolognese da un lato e toscano-fiorentino dall’altro, poiché testimoni di una contrapposta percezione e ricezione dell’arte dettatoria, che concerne tanto gli ambienti culturali coinvolti quanto le modalità di diffusione.

איגרת ההערה (רִסַאלַה̈ אלתַّנְבִּיהּ) היא חיבור הפולמוס הדקדוקי הראשון הנמצא בידנו המבוסס על גילוייו הבלשניים של ר' יהודה חיוג'. חיבור זה של ר' יונה אבן ג'נאח, גדול הבלשנים בימי הביניים, רואה בזאת אור במהדורה מדעית מוערת במקורו הערבי, ולראשונה מזה אלף שנים  – בתרגום עברי.

This paper is dedicated to the first universities and mendicant schools, where thousands of students began to converge during the thirteenth century. Logic played an unpreceded role in basic and higher education. A "Parisian logical model" of education was shaped at the University of Paris, adopted by mendicant Orders in their schools of logic (studia artium), diffused in all disciplines, and progressively spread in Southern Europe. Medieval education became heavily based upon logical, and even "logician" practices, with the "syllogization" of exegetical, disputational, and evaluation practices. The notion of logical skill conveniently captures this unique situation for the discipline of logic, as well as the way medieval thinkers conceived of logic as a universal, transdisciplinary method, a natural operation of the mind, a modality of knowledge (modus sciendi), the very form of teaching and graduating, a "habitus," a technique (ars) and a science. The divisions of Aristotelian logic, the "artificial logic," were for the first time naturalized and projected on the very structure of human mind, which was thereby "logicalized" and ascribed a "natural logic." A strong anthropological dimension was bestowed on logic. The discipline of logic was deemed a necessary instrument in the philosophical "perfection" and the Christian "reparation" of man as an intellectual creature by a group of logically skilled, professional philosophers and theologians, whereas men deprived of logical education were described as "logically disabled," and stuck into inferior forms of humanity. The world of medieval intellectual elites displayed a variety of social uses of logic, beyond academic circles, especially in the performance of pastoral duties. The possible historical records of the social usefulness of logic are explored: for students, the majority in medieval universities, who left university without a degree, but with a solid logical education, for ordinary mendicant friars, dedicated to preaching and confession, who frequented logical schools, and for members of the parish clergy sent to the faculties of arts.

The study of the interdependence of grammar and logic at the beginning of the twelfth century is a difficult subject and progress here has been slow. With the recent publication of the Notae Dunelmenses, however, we are now able to see rather more clearly how closely the two disciplines were bound to one another. The following article draws upon this newly published material and on unpublished material from contemporary commentaries on Aristotle’s Categories to investigate how the grammarians’ account of number was reconciled with that given by Aristotle. It considers in particular the problem of the meaning of numerical terms such as ‘pair’ (binarius) and of collective names such as ‘people’ (populus) and how attempting to solve it shaped thinking about the metaphysics of number.

Dieses scheint Texte zu mehreren Disziplinen zu umfassen: Grammatik, Rhetorik, Exegese und Theologie, in einer Mischung von Textgattungen, wie sie für die Magister des 12. Jahrhunderts kennzeichnend ist, sofern wir es tatsächlich mit Abhandlungen desselben Autors zu tun haben. Neben diesen Zuschreibungsschwierigkeiten wirft das Werk auch in Bezug auf die relative Chronologie verschiedene Fragen auf. Dies hängt teilweise mit dem Umstand zusammen, dass eine der Schriften von Petrus in unterschiedlichen Fassungen überliefert ist, aber auch mit dem jeweiligen Grad der in diesem intellektuellen Kontext üblichen Aneignung von Meinungen, die im Diskurs des frühen 12. Jahrhunderts zirkulierten Trivium 100 Kommentar zu Ciceros ‹De inventione›.-Hs.:

Cette contribution a pour objectif de revisiter l’hypothèse de l’attribution à Laevius du fragment anonyme mentionné par Servius dans son commentaire aux Bucoliques (Laev. carm. frg. 33 Bl.), en proposant des arguments supplémentaires en faveur de celle-ci et une nouvelle réflexion sur la manière dont les Erotopaegnia circulaient au sein de l’exégèse virgilienne. Dans ce cadre, nous examinerons deux fragments du recueil, mentionnés par Macrobe (frg. 14 Bl.) et par le Scholiaste de Vérone (frg. 16 Bl.), en les comparant avec les scholies parallèles chez Servius et Servius Danielis. Ainsi, nous tenterons de démontrer que les Erotopaegnia étaient présents dans des sources communes à tous les exégètes de Virgile, même si Servius n’a jamais mentionné explicitement le nom de leur auteur. En effet, « interpréter le silence » de Servius signifie démontrer la richesse des sources sur lesquelles il a fondé son exégèse, richesse qui risque de ne pas être perceptible dès la première lecture de son commentaire.

The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius was not only widely read during the Middle Ages, but it was also frequently glossed, commented on, and discussed. The ninth poem of the third book, which offers a Platonic image of the creation of the cosmos and the governance over it, had a specific place in the reception of this Boethius’s work. Today we know of numerous debates about the possible interpretations of this poem and its Christian understanding, dating back at least to the 9th century. This paper deals with the commentary on this poem written by Adalbold of Utrecht († 1026). Attention is focused in particular on the role of dialectic in selected passages of this Adalbold’s text and on the inspirational sources of his dialectical knowledge. Specifically, the paper deals with the possibility of definition or description of God (Deus sine nomine), and arguments explaining the appropriateness or inappropriateness of conceptualizing God as the form of the highest good (forma summi boni).

В статье на основе анализа писем Алкуина, так или иначе затрагивающих проблему язычников, определяется его отношение к методам проводимой во времена Карла Великого евангелизации. Автор статьи объясняет выбор Алкуином своих адресатов, доказывает, что Алкуин был сторонником идеи «мягкой» христианизации через убеждение и проповедь, обосновывает выбор Алкуином тем и аргументов. В результате сравнения предложенной Алкуином модели евангелизации с опытом христианизации франками саксов автор приходит к выводу, что, возможно, евангелизация саксов и аваров обрела новые формы и стала более эффективной под влиянием Алкуина.

En el marco del corpus científico-técnico constituido para el proyecto de investigación enfocado al estudio de la lengua matemática española del siglo XVII,financiado por la Fundación Séneca, cabe destacar el manuscrito Método de la geometría(Madrid, 1640), fruto de la actividad científica y docente del matemático amberino Juan Carlos della Faille en el Colegio Imperial madrileño. 
Si bien el tecnolecto matemático, en coincidencia con otros ámbitos de especialidad,  presenta características morfológicas y sintácticas prototípicas, además de modelos textualesy discursivosespecíficos, sus particularidades lingüísticas residen primordialmente en el vocabulario técnico, ámbito preferente de atención en este trabajo. El análisis del plano léxico prestará atención a diferentes aspectos, tales como significados, transmisión y documentación. A ninth-century citation from Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations in MS Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin -- Preussischer Kulturbesitz, 130 (hereafter Phillipps 1832), a collection of Bede’s scientific works and astronomical texts, offers perspectives on Carolingian humanism beyond philological acumen and text correction. The gloss also serves as a springboard to consider the complementarity of pagan and Christian learning as exemplified in the thought of John Scottus (Eriugena) and Lupus of Ferrières. An appendix explores the transmission of the Tusculans in the Carolingian age.

This article was originally submitted in September 2018. At the time, it had been intended to serve as a manifest of the Innovating Knowledge research project, which had started at the Huygens Institute in February 2018. The project was successfully completed in August 2021 while this article was still in print. During those years, this article was adjusted several times to reflect the conceptual developments within the project and to account for the project outputs presenting the project's results in a more definitive form than is the case in this early article. Nevertheless, the article could not be updated in its entirety. As a result, the author recommends those interested in the project and its results to consult the project website (innovatingknowledge.nl) rather than rely solely on this article.

This piece of work analyses the treatment of the name of Queen Isabel I of Castile in Nebrija’s and Marineo’s grammar books from her mention in the poems of Gonzalo de Ayora and Flaminio Sículo, both published in the 'Grammatices institucionibus libellus breuis et perutilis' (Hispali 1501) of the Sicilian historian.

Nel 1937 la stampa italiana comunicò che il regista Rouben Mamoulian stava accarezzando il progetto di girare un film sulla vita di Eleonora Duse, che aveva visto recitare a Londra nel 1922. La protagonista avrebbe dovuto essere Greta Garbo, che con la recente pellicola 'Camille' (1936, regia di George Cukor) aveva di fatto portato sullo schermo un cavallo di battaglia della giovane Duse: 'La signora dalle camelie' di Alexandre Dumas figlio. Questo progetto rimase irrealizzato, ma l’idea di creare una comunanza fra le due dive fu ripresa negli Anni Sessanta dal regista Giorgio Strehler con il soggetto cinematografico 'Due volte sola', pubblicato postumo (a cura di Stella Casiraghi e con prefazione di Tullio Kezich, Torino: Aragno, 2000).
Anche il progetto di Strehler rimase irrealizzato, ma la sua forza consiste nell’aver accantonato l’immagine giovanile dell’affascinante cortigiana e di essersi concentrato sulla diva ormai anziana: la solitudine dell’ultima Duse diventa anche quella di Greta Garbo che sta invecchiando. Entrambe selettive nelle amicizie, poco appariscenti nella vita privata, desiderose di non essere riconosciute dal pubblico nella quotidianità, divennero due icone mondiali: Strehler avrebbe voluto costringerle a fare i conti con il loro mito, svelando l’altra faccia del loro successo.

La antigua costumbre universitaria de solemnizar la apertura del curso escolar con un discurso conmemorativo produjo un abundante cuerpo de piezas oratorias en latín que solo el Renacimiento comenzó a valorar en su justa medida. Es por ello que, en su gran mayoría, los sermones o arengas de esta clase se han perdido para el periodo medieval. En este volumen se rescata uno de estos discursos, que tanto por sus fechas como por sus características puede considerarse el más importante de cuantos hoy se conocen para la península ibérica en la Edad Media. Pronunciado en la universidad de Salamanca en la primera mitad del siglo xv, que tiene la particularidad de haberse conservado en una cuidada copia manuscrita y en una doble versión latino-castellana. En el estudio que antecede a su edición, se analiza pormenorizadamente el marco histórico y retórico en que fue escrito, se discute la fecha en la que fue compuesto y pronunciado, abogando por una datación en 1430, y se analizan los datos que permiten identificar a su autor con el decretista del Estudio salamantino Juan Alfonso de Benavente. La pieza, tanto desde el punto de vista formal como en el plano del contenido, responde a un momento de cambio y transformación, en el que la propia universidad salmantina se esfuerza por llevar a cabo una renovación de sus enseñanzas y de su lugar en la sociedad castellana.

A pesar de que la producción escrita vinculada al Estudio salmantino experimenta en esos primeros decenios un desarrollo sin precedentes, apenas conocíamos textos que dieran voz a este momento, que expresaran el reconocimiento de esa transformación y de esa función cada vez más crucial en el contexto castellano. El discurso aquí editado y estudiado nos ofrece un retrato elocuente y sugestivo de esa imagen discursiva que echábamos en falta. Nos encontramos ante una pieza asertiva, inspirada en una voluntad reformista y transformadora que el autor pone como una de las señas de identidad del Estudio, y que tanto por su ambición como por su contenido puede verse como una suerte de manifiesto. La versión romance, elaborada de forma contemporánea, y según todos los indicios obra del propio Benavente, es ciertamente excepcional, ya que no se conoce ningún otro caso similar en la Europa medieval. Y en sí misma no es menos interesante, por cuanto servía para extender el influjo y el prestigio de la institución universitaria en el mundo cultural de la corte y de los lectores laicos. El discurso abunda en referencias a Boecio, Séneca o Cicerón, autores que comenzaban a suscitar la atención de los espíritus más despiertos en los ambientes cortesanos, y de hecho coincide con las primeras versiones de estos clásicos al romance castellano. La mera invocación de estos nombres avalaba con el aura de la institución universitaria el cambio de gusto y de modelos que tuvo lugar por entonces en la corte castellana. Estos y otros asuntos, trasladados a los ambientes laicos, podían hacer que se leyera aquí también como un manifiesto, en este caso de contenido más literario, en defensa de un canon y un conocimiento útil y honesto en concordancia con las líneas básicas de las tendencias culturales en las primeras décadas del reinado de Juan II. Una vez más, la traducción da lugar a un desplazamiento hermenéutico, de la mano de la ampliación del público y la mutación de los contextos de lectura.

El descubrimiento de este importante texto es el objeto central del volumen, que se abre con un amplio estudio en el que se contextualiza el discurso dentro de los rituales universitarios, se discute de forma pormenorizada la problemática de la datación y la autoría, se analiza en detalle la construcción del texto latino, y finalmente se discuten las implicaciones de la traducción romance. La edición ofrece enfrentadas las dos versiones (el original latino y la versión castellana), con una exhaustiva anotación de las fuentes y con notas explicativas que discuten las referencias o los motivos esenciales del texto.
