Более известный под названием «Первая всеобщая хроника Испании», данным ему выдающимся испанским филологом, историком-медиевистом и знатоком средневековой испанской рукописной традиции Р. Менендесом Пидалем (1869-1968), текст хроники переиздавался трижды: в 1906, 1955, 1977 гг. (переиздание текста по изданию 1955 г.) 1. С тех пор представления о судьбе самого памятника и характере связанной с ним рукописной традиции существенно изменились, появились новые издания отдельных редакций хроники, более соответствующие современным научным представлениям, однако до настоящего времени именно версия текста, созданная Р. Менендесом Пидалем, остается наиболее полной. Создание «Истории Испании» под личным руководством просвещенного монарха Альфонсо Х Мудрого (1252-1284) явилось одним из выдающихся плодов кастильского «ренессанса XIII века», ставшего значимым следствием успеха «быстрой реконкисты», последовавшей за победой при Лас-Навас-де-Толоса (1212 г.), итогом которой стало подчинение большей части территорий мусульманской Испании (Аль-Áндалуса) и превращение Кастильско-Леонского королевства в значимый фактор политической жизни латинского Запада XIII в. The article offers the first detailed study of a hitherto underappreciated narrative of the early years of Latin Settlement in Outremer following the First Crusade (1095–99), the Secunda pars historiae Iherosolimitane, often attributed to Lisiard of Tours. Taking inspiration from methodological developments in the field of “Crusade Studies” that have emphasized the narratives relating to this movement as crucial “cultural artifacts” of Latin Christian society, it seeks to demonstrate the valuable light this text sheds on twelfth-century perceptions of the Latin East, the importance of crusading to local identities, reactions to crusading failures, and international monastic networks. After establishing that the Secunda historia should be situated in northeastern France in the early 1150s, and linked in particular to the Premonstratensian order and a church council held at Laon Cathedral in March 1150, it is argued that the text served two key purposes. First, that after the failed Second Crusade (1146–49), efforts to explain defeat necessitated the incorporation of the Latin East’s history, rather than merely the First Crusade (the influence of which hung heavily over contemporary crusade promotion), as a site of divine punishment and reward; and second, that these same narratorial motives were harnessed to validate and promote further crusading.

This book chapter investigates the way in which chroniclers in thirteenth-century England understood the political conflicts between Henry III and Simon de Montfort. It focuses on the use of biblical models for interpreting the changing fortunes of the two parties.

Listen bilden ein historisches und kulturelles Kontinuum in der Schriftverwendung und stellen auch in mittelalterlichen Libri vitae das grund-sätzliche Ordnungsmedium dar. Die Bücher wurden im späten 8. und frühen 9. Jahrhundert in mehreren Klöstern als Verbrüderungs-und Gedenkbücher angelegt und enthalten umfangreiche Listen von Personennamen. Während diese Quellen und ihre Namenlisten bisher hauptsächlich Gegenstand von historischen und na-menkundlichen Studien waren, diskutiert dieser Beitrag die Textsorte ›Liste‹ in den Codices in Bezug auf ihre formalen, inhaltlichen und funktionalen Eigenschaften. Es wird eine große Vielfalt an formalen und inhaltlichen Prinzipien in den Listen der Libri vitae festgestellt, was einerseits mit funktionalen Verschiebungen im Gebrauch der Manuskripte im Laufe der Zeit und andererseits mit verschiedenen institutionellen und politischen Kontexten sowie idiosynkratischen Schreibpraktiken in Verbindung gebracht werden kann. Diese flexible Handhabung unterstreicht das enorm breite funktionale Potential der Liste als Kulturpraxis und als Medium der sozialen Ordnung. Es zeigen sich jedoch auch semiotische Konstanten über alle Listen hinweg, die als Ausdruck von etablierten mittelalterlichen Schreibpraktiken angesehen werden können.

Lists form a historical and cultural continuum in the use of writing and also
constitute the basic principle of arrangement in medieval Libri vitae. These books consist of extensive lists of personal names and became popular in Carolingian late eighth and early ninth century in several medieval monasteries. They had memorial function for the person named in the lists. Whereas these books and their name lists have been mainly subject to historical and onomastic research so far, this article aims at approaching the nature of the text type ›list‹ present in the codices on a formal,
textual and functional level. The analysis shows a wide variety of formal and textual principles underlying the presentation of lists in Libri vitae which can be related to functional shifts in the use of the manuscripts in the course of time on the one hand and on different institutional and political contexts as well as idiosyncratic scribal practices on the other. This flexible handling underlines the enormously broad functional potential of the list as a cultural practice and as a medium of social arrangement. However, there are also semiotic constants in all of the lists manifesting established medieval writing practices.

La vitalité des recherches sur l'écrit cistercien ne s'est pas démentie au cours des dernières décennies ; elle s'est illustrée par de nouvelles éditions de sources, une attention accrue portée aux « pancartes » monastiques, documents longtemps réputés spécialité cistercienne, tandis que les chercheurs faisaient dialoguer fructueusement actes de la pratique et manuscrits de bibliothèque. Le neuvième centenaire de la fondation de Clairvaux a été l'occasion de soumettre la diversité du monde cistercien au prisme de ses écrits diplomatiques, administratifs et de gestion autour de trois axes de réflexion – la production, la conservation et les manipulations. De la Normandie à la Lorraine, du Danemark au Portugal, les auteurs explorent les outils de production et de contrôle de la mémoire mis en place dans les monastères d'hommes et de femmes, entre le XIIe et le XVe siècle, au sein d'une même filiation ou en les confrontant à leur environnement proche (actes épiscopaux, fontevristes ou bénédictins). De ce « maquis d'écritures » surgit une variété de documents inédits et de techniques énigmatiques qui interrogent l'existence d'une spécificité cistercienne de l'écrit, la volonté réelle ou supposée d'uniformisation de l'écriture au sein de l'Ordre, la réappropriation des formes et des formules, l'influence des maisons-mères sur leur filles et le poids de l'environnement local auquel chaque monastère doit s'acclimater.

The paper is devoted to characterize the Spanish Early Medieval hagiography as a special genre of Medieval historical writing, as a history (or biography) of saints. The peculiarities of the Spanish Lifes of
Saints are studied in the context of Western and Eastern hagiographical
traditions of the same period. The connections between hagiographical
texts from one side and Ancient and Medieval traditions of the historical
memory fixation is shown. List of the most important hagiographical texts is composed and the main principals of the classifying are involved. The determining part of the general tendencies of the Christian (Western and Eastern) hagiography is approved on the concrete texts and the groups of texts dated by the studied epoch.
В статье предпринимается попытка дать общую
характеристику испанской раннесредневековой агиографии как
особому жанру средневекового историописания – истории (или
биографии) святых. Дается характеристика специфики испанской
житийной литературы этого периода в контексте истории как
западной, так и восточной агиографии того же времени. Определяется связь агиографических памятников как с античной, так и средневековой традицией фиксации исторической памяти.
Приводится перечень основных агиографических памятников и
устанавливаются принципы их классификации. На конкретном
материале показана определяющая роль общих тенденций развития христианской (как западной, так и восточной) агиографии исследуемого периода.

Hugo Falcandus, the author of the Liber (or Historia) de Regno Siciliae (1154–69), is a contentious figure among historians of the twelfth century. Often disgruntled and embittered, he wrote about the reigns of two Sicilian kings, William I and II, in a text rife with classicising references and personal judgements. Most unusually for a medieval writer from this period, his Liber appears free of any religious elements or framework. This article conducts a search for God in Falcandus’s work and challenges the view that the divine element is entirely ignored by this author. By doing so and through a comparative approach, it also aims at re-contextualising his writings within the production of texts on secular power and authority taking place in the twelfth century. It will show that the apparent lack of a religious framework is a result of the author’s political vision and that Falcandus is a product and a representative of broader ideological changes sweeping through medieval Europe during his time.

The article examines the interpretation of Pompey the
Great's (106–48 BC) image, in the medieval chronicle “Estoria
de Espanna”, which was compiled in the vernacular (Castilian)
language after 1270 at the court of Alfonso X the Wise, king of
Castile and Leon (1252–1284). The authors emphasize the fact
that, in contradiction to the modern tradition, when describing
the conflict between Pompey and Caesar, the medieval chronicler
sympathizes with the former. The authors explore the causes
of this non-traditional interpretation and show the means
used to construct the image (primary sources of the chronicle,
the manner in which they are analysed, the style and specific
language of the chronicler). The article includes a translation
of some chapters from the chronicle (77–80 and 101–105) that
present episodes from Pompey’s biography.

El objeto de la investigación es el problema del carácter de la evolución de la naturaleza del poder real en la Hispania visigoda de la segunda mitad del siglo VI. Cronologicamente este periodo sigue a la época de la história visigoda descrita por el gran historiador Jordanes, quien escribió su obra en Ravenna cerca del año 550. El análisis de los testimónios textuales (los textos de Gregorio de Tours, pseudo-Fredegaro, Isidoro de Sevilla, Juan de Biclaro y otros) nos muestra el desarrollo de las tendencias fijadas ya por la pluma de Jordanes. En la segunda mitad del siglo VI el poder de los reyes hispano-visigodos perdió su base incial. La dinastía de los Baltos se interrumpió con la muerte de Amalarico II. La ausencia del legitimismo del poder real provocó la situación del casos y de las revueltas continuas, cuando ningun rey no podía controlar todo el territorio del reyno. Al mismo tiempo los últimos reyes arianos de Hispania tenían que resistir a las invasiones francas y bizantinas. En esta situación los reyes visigodos tuvieron que fomar los fundamentos nuevos de su poder. El sentido principal de las reformas regias promovidas desde la época de Aguila y hasta la de Leovigildo fué la recepción de los elementos y symbolos de la ideología del poder tardoromana y bizantina. Pero la base de la nuevas construcciones ideológicas fué la reelaboración de la ideas políticas reflegadas por los textos bíblicos y por la tradición patrística. La síntesis de los elementos de la exeriencia política del Imperio y de algunos aspectos de Cristianismo (especialmente tomados del Testamento Viejo) producieron la nueva ideología del poder. El nuevo legitimismo del rey visigodo fué basado en la sinfonía del Estado y de la Iglesia ariana. En este contexto el rey aparece como el defensor de la creéncia cristiana y no como el usurpador con el poder basada exculsivamente en la fuerza militar. Los simbolos de su poder (la capital (la urbs regia), el trono, el púrpuro, la corona y otros) tenían que acentuar el carácter legítimo de su status, que le defería de todos los otros candidatos al título del rex.  El último título ya figura no como la seña de la superioridad de hecho, pero como un análogo del título imperial bizantino. Al fin del gobieno del rey Leovigildo ya podemos constatar la formación del “anti-Byzacio” leovigidiana, es decir del estado ariano de tipo imperial contrapuesto al Imperio ortodoxo. Como sabemos, el potencial de este “anti-Byzancio” fué muy limitado, porque Leovigilo no realizó sus planes de la “arianización” de Hispania. Pero después de la conversión de Recaredo (586) y del III Concilio Toledano (589) las ideas políticas leovigildianas en su mayor parte fueron conservadas y utilizadas para constuir la nueva relidad política del Reyno Visigodo católico.

The article is devoted to the forms and methods of using
Pliny the Elder’s (c. 23–79) Natural History as a source of some episodes described in the medieval chronicle Estoria de Espanna (EE),
compiled in the vernacular (Castilian) language after 1270 at the
court of Alfonso X the Wise, king of Castile and Leon (1252–1284).
Manuscript materials of the period do not contain any direct evidence of Pliny’s book being used in the royal scriptorium. Analysis
of the EE text demonstrates that the allusions to the Natural History (Nat. Hist.) were not taken directly from its text. But the great
prestige of Pliny’s text in Castile and Leon of the 13th century is
obvious; it was one of the consequences of the “long 12th century”
culture. Vivid interest in the Natural History only grew in the next
century. The manuscript tradition of the Nat. Hist. from the end of
the 13th century to the 14th century (manuscripts BNE MSS /10042
(National Library of Spain), Ms. Q-I-4 and R-I-5 (Royal Library of
El Escorial), manuscript catalogs of some medieval ecclesiastical
and private libraries) demonstrates that the 14th century opened a
new period in history of the “Spanish” Pliny, which became an object of the great interest of the scholars. This interest appeared at
a time when the Primitive Version of the EE was already finished.

«Естественной истории» Плиния Старшего (ок. 23–79) как одного из источников средневековой хроники «История Испании»
(«Estoria de Espanna»), составленной на разговорном (средневековом кастильском) языке при дворе Альфонсо Х Мудрого
(1252–1284) после 1270 г. Прямых рукописных свидетельств
использования Плиниева текста в королевском скриптории не
сохранилось. Анализ текста хроники показывает, что в «Истории Испании» (как, впрочем, и во «Всеобщей истории», создававшейся в том же скриптории) заимствования из «Естественной истории» имеют явно вторичное происхождение. Вместе с
тем не вызывает сомнений высокий авторитет трудов Плиния
в Кастилии и Леоне указанного периода, ставший следствием
общего роста интереса к античной культуре в контексте «долгого XII века». Этот интерес лишь нарастал в следующее столетие,
в период укрепления культурных связей с Италией и влияния
итальянского Возрождения. Среди прочего эта тенденция четко
прослеживается и на примере рукописной традиции «испанского Плиния» XIV в.

This paper explores the tendency for English historical narratives of the late twelfth century to develop rounded portraits of royal characters by juxtaposing one or more kings. Linguistic choices could combine with the selection and ordering of events to thrust royal characters into narrative apposition, and to render implied judgment about their respective qualities. I analyze a major work of narrative history – William of Newburgh’s Historia rerum Anglicarum – which evinces this approach to royal characterization, and try to show that its seeming eccentricities of narrative time and focalization are best explained by just such a program of characterization and juxtaposition. This in turn serves to emphasize the significance of this narrative as a culturally situated commentary on the universal practice of kingship and its relationship to English history.

The author of the article tries to emphasize the part of some formal characteristics of manuscripts in the process of medieval chronicles analysis. The subject of the analysis is the cap. 1025 of the “First General Chronicle”, which contains a story about the beginning of the revolt of Castilian nobility in the period of minority of Enrique I, king of Castile and Toledo (1214 – 1217).

The article is dedicated to the problem of the reconstruction of the biography of the early medieval king Leovigild (568-586), who vas a governor of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo. His image was transformed by the centuries of the historical memory: in the Hispanic chronicles of the 7th – 13th cen. we see the different interpretations of it. Leovigild’s contemporaries (Isidor of Seville, Gregry of Tours, Pseudo-Fredegar and others) appreciated negatively the religious policy of the arian King. But if we compare their stories, we see that really Leovigild was not a kind of religious fanatic, and that the perception of he like the last was made by the Christian Hispanic clergy, which became a mane guardian of the historical memory in the Early Middle Ages. The concrete facts of king’s biography shows us the great politician, whose deals were artificially connected in the medieval written histories with the name of Reccared the Catholic, who his son and successor.

Цель статьи – показать влияние средневековой историографии, написанной на разговорных языках, на формирование негативных представлений о мусульманах и исламе в латинской Европе. Подчеркивается, что такие сочинения имели много более широкую аудиторию, чем латинские тексты, ориентированные лишь на образованных клириков. К статье прилагается перевод гл. 1046 «Истории Испании» (Первой всеобщей хроники), в котором описывается взятие Кордовы войсками короля Кастилии и Леона Фернандо III Святого в 1236 г.

Rousing pre-battle speeches, exhorting warriors to deeds of valour, form a prominent element in many medieval Latin chronicles. Such literary speeches are highly revealing of their authors’ perceptions of motivation in warfare. Set within historical narratives that have moral and didactic purposes, they reflect rhetorical constructs of ideal behaviour on the part of leaders and soldiers, as well as casting important light on perceptions of the enemy, ethnic identity, religious motivation and notions of courage and cowardice. This paper examines in detail the battle rhetoric of the earliest Latin historical narrative of the First Crusade, the Gesta Francorum.
