O artigo busca compreender as formas pelas quais se constroem representações de gênero na sitcom Seinfeld, com foco no caso de Elaine Benes, única mulher entre os personagens principais. Indaga-se sobre as possíveis articulações, tensionamentos e/ou negociações de imagens cristalizadas e discursos estabelecidos e/ou contestadores na série. O percurso metodológico parte de reflexões a partir de mediações na circulação recente da série; em seguida, passa à identificação e discussão de representações de gênero e sentidos de feminismo em episódios representativos da trajetória de Elaine. Como resultado, observa-se a dialogização de posições semântico-axiológicas que expressam expectativas quanto a performances de gênero tradicionais, em um processo que tanto potencializa quanto domestica sentidos de feminismo, evidenciando limites próprios aos chamados feminismos midiáticos.

Despite the widespread use of multiple-choice (MC) tests in language teaching and the recognized importance of grammar instruction in language acquisition and assessment, there remains a dearth of research examining the suitability of MC tests for evaluating second language (L2) or foreign language (FL) learners’ grammatical ability – their proficiency in using grammar accurately and effectively across different contexts. This study aims to address this gap by investigating whether MC tests, which assess knowledge of grammar through the selection of correct answers from options, adequately reflect learners’ ability to use grammatical structures accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately. Data were collected from 68 English FL learners using two assessment tools: an MC task and a gap-filling task (GF task). Results indicate significant performance disparities between the MC and GF tasks, suggesting that MC tests may not consistently gauge learners’ true grammatical proficiency. This inconsistency underscores the limitations of MC testing as a singular measure of grammatical ability, particularly in assessing learners’ capacity to apply grammar meaningfully across diverse contexts. Further research is warranted to explore this issue comprehensively.

The dismantling of apartheid in South Africa inspired hope that it was possible to build a new inclusive society and to cast into oblivion the deformed way of living in the apartheid past. The post-apartheid period has witnessed attempts to collapse the racial and cultural seams created during apartheid in an endeavour to heal the sutures visible on the body of the nation. Post-apartheid South African literature has plunged into this grand undertaking through spearheading the search for truth as an ethical obligation. This paper uses Antjie Krog's Country of My Skull and Njabulo Ndebele's The Cry of Winnie Mandela to interrogate the extent to which ethical aspirations are negotiated in post-apartheid literature. Paying attention to memory as baggage, as manifested in the specially created institution known as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the paper strives to uncover the montage of voices in the narrative nested within the historical ambiguity generated by the attempt to move away from apartheid while at the same time succumbing to the past while attempting to find closure. Inscribing the position and the authority of the narrative in the representation of key historical events, in this particular case, how histories of the South African nation are symbolically tied to and in the narrative, the paper pursues two interrelated objectives. Firstly, it establishes the role that personal narratives and testimonies play in the (re)construction of truth pertaining to the South African past. Secondly, it uncovers the ambiguities between the personal narrative and the collective narrative as represented in testimonies. Emphasising on the limits of the narrative in terms of duplicity, the paper figures how significant histories and testimonies of the TRC have been mediated in Krog's memoir and in Ndebele's quasi-historical novel to explain how memory is shaped through testimony, and how, conversely, testimony relies on memory to negotiate the search for truth and authenticity. In revising the past as an ethical obligation for the present in the narrative, this paper uses Paul Ricoeur, Hannah Arendt and Tzvetan Todorov to reflect on the contestations on symbolic histories that render ethical pursuits ambiguous, as "truth", "good", and "evil" become contestable. The paper concludes by appraising how the texts attempt to gesture towards the acceptance of an "ethics of compromise" in its appeal to pragmatic truth for the South African community.

I argue that Ricoeur's ideas about narrative can lead us toward a theory of the psyche that sees it as structured normatively, that is, as a system of conscious and unconscious processual rules that are rooted in the specific ways that the mind has been shaped via interpersonal processes of relational development. I want to suggest that narrative is not only, as Ricoeur argues, a horizon from which a sense of self emerges, but that it can be seen as constituting a mode of mental functioning itself, that is, as a capacity for organizing experience as well as a dynamic that organizes thought itself. The thesis of a norm-governed psyche has much in common with Ricoeur's contention that narrative is, taking after Aristotle, a form of cohering disparate events into a linear form of meaning that can itself be interpreted and used to make sense of experience. I try to show how a theory of a norm-governed psyche can help us understand certain kinds of pathologies in thinking in patients and ways of intervening.

This paper aims to reveal specific aspects of religious life in a Roman-Catholic community situated in the Brno-Country district. For this purpose, the fieldwork was conducted in one parish for a period of one year from 30 November 2022. The data collection was mainly based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews with ten individuals (three women and seven men; mean age: 36.7 years). Both native-born inhabitants and newcomers of diverse professions were intentionally included in the research sample. The content analysis of semi-structured interviews was performed in Atlas.ti. It was discovered that tolerance and cooperation are among the most important topics discussed by the informants and play a crucial role in their religious life.

This study explored the journeys of Formerly Incarcerated Latino Men (FILM) who are turning to higher education as a reentry support for their lives after being released from prison. Offering programs like higher education during reentry is not just about creating new paths and opportunities, something higher education already does for many. The insights uncovered within this study can inform those managing educational programs in correctional facilities and higher education institutions, as well as other leaders in higher education institutions who want to support FILM students, faculty, and practitioners in the field. Grounded in real-life experiences, this qualitative research study leaned on the methodology of phenomenology and LatCrit and transformative theory frameworks to shed light on the journeys of six FILM students across different California Community Colleges and California State University campuses. Through semi-structured interviews, FILM students were able to discuss their experience post-release and navigating their institutions of higher education. The study uncovers seven overarching themes that summarize the shared experiences and phenomena among the participants: (1) Pre-Incarceration Barriers, (2) Prison Education Barriers, (3) Positive Outcomes of Prison Education, (4) Barriers to Reentry into Higher Education, (5) Positive Outcomes of Higher Education, (6) Necessary Resources for Higher Education Reentry, and (7) Identity.

In this refreshing exploration of Judah’s identity formation, the emphasis is placed on the psychological underpinnings of Judah’s sentiments towards Israel, aiming to illuminate the significance of Judah’s appropriation of Israel. Richly contextual, this book draws parallels observed in Asian contexts, notably those of North and South Korea, and China with its marginal Others. Central to the thesis is that Judah’s perceived inferiority to Israel played a crucial role in its quest to appropriate Israel’s legacy and identity. Adopting a functionalist lens, Judah’s rewriting of Israel’s ancestral past is examined. The Abraham and Jacob traditions are understood as competing “identity narratives,” serving as critical discursive tools to construct their pasts. The study scrutinizes how the southern Abraham tradition fundamentally reoriented the Jacob tradition, North Israel’s standalone ancestral myth. Set against the broader canvas of continued efforts to redefine and embody “Israel” within the history of Judeo-Christian religions, this exploration underscores how Judah’s pivotal appropriation of Israel has established a paradigm for all future endeavors of “becoming Israel.”

The research is an exploratory study on the children of street families in Ber Sarai (New Delhi). It provides an observation on the use of public spaces, particularly the street and its physical structures, by the children. The study appropriated the paradigm of Childhood Sociology, especially its recognition of children's agency, the specificity of their socio-cultural context, and variations in childhood (James and Prout, 3-5). It visually attends to children's involvement in the construction of their realities and spaces on the streets of Ber Sarai. In this process, participant observation and photo-documentation were employed providing visual accounts of childhood in the area.

En el capítulo los autores se preguntan cómo las trayectorias académicas se transforman hacia el trabajo colegiado y cómo las prácticas colegiadas inciden en la formación y potenciación de subjetividades más comprensibles. Los objetivos que se proponen son: exponer las transformaciones de las trayectorias académicas que devienen trabajo colegiado e implican otras subjetividades. Así como reflexionar sobre la relevancia de prácticas colegiadas que permitan la comprensión entre los sujetos, como una parte de la subjetividad.

Ao desenvolver o enredo Punga, Crioula! para a Acadêmicos do Engenho da Rainha,
pude entrecruzar as perspectivas do pesquisador acadêmico e do artista produtor de
imagem carnavalesca. Assim, lancei-me a pesquisas sobre o tambor de crioula, da
missão de pesquisas folclóricas ao processo de patrimonialização e elaborei a sinopse,
texto fundamental de todo o desenvolvimento literário – composição do sambaenredo
e roteiro enviado para os julgadores – e visual – alegorias e fantasias – do
desfile. O processo foi atravessado pela pandemia de COVID-19, que afetou
sobremaneira os fazeres artísticos, inclusive impedindo a realização do desfile no
carnaval de 2021, conforme planejado. Neste relato, apresento a pesquisa artística
realizada e parte dos seus desdobramentos literários e imagéticos no desfile que
conquistou o título de campeão do Grupo B no carnaval carioca em 2022.

Bhekizizwe (Bheki) Peterson was an African literary scholar, filmmaker, artist, and community activist. While all accurate descriptors, to describe him thus leaves absent his underlying project of Black Love. It is love that is present in his project of recovery of Black intellectual and cultural legacies; in his teaching and mentorship marked by intergenerational dialoguing in a joint quest for freedom; and it is love in his injunction to challenge our rigid disciplinary imaginations of interior lives and social imaginaries that attend to the "continuities and discontinuities between past, present and future" (Peterson, 2019b, p. 345). In this paper, I think with Bheki on 1) the act of writing; 2) African ontology's relevance for trauma and healing and 3) the moral template of personhood as part of his 'buzzing' against disciplinary imaginaries. This paper is an invitation to re-imagine disciplinary boundaries by orientating psychology to the scholarship of Bhekizizwe Peterson, and to take up his questions on the narratable subject and complexities of personhood. I consider Bheki's reflection on the act of writing and implications of narratable subjects that are part of a moral economy of what it means to be human.

Starting from Bakhtin's classification (1986) of the Bildungsroman, this paper offers evidence that Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) belongs to the fifth category of this genre. We argue that the novel deals not only with the emergence of the protagonist, but that it actually focuses on a transitional period both for Scout Finch and for the community of which she is a part. The plot traces not only Scout's development, but also the upheavals and the beginning of radical changes in an apparently stagnant society.

In Protestant biblical scholarship, the Deuterocanonical books are in a rather disadvantaged position. It is a welcome fact that this year an ecumenical initiative has been launched to produce a series of commentaries on these works. In connection with this, I have begun to work on the first book of Maccabees, and in this paper I offer an introductory study of it.

Polos de Desarrollo desde las voces y prácticas de los actores que intervinieron en los procesos de diseño, puesta en marcha y evaluación
de aquellos.

This paper attempts to disclose the meaning of the contemporary spread of conspiracy theories by pursuing Frederic Jameson's suggestion that conspiracy theories are symptoms of an impoverished "cognitive mapping." For that purpose, I translate the problem of cognitive mapping into a larger question of narrativity, in dialogue with the flourishing field of narrative ethics, and interpret it through the lens of critical theory and psychoanalysis. Briefly, I contend that conspiracy theories are surrogate narratives to cope with the contemporary societies' opacity and the consequent deficiency in self-narrativization.

This study underscores the necessity of exploring criminal identities beyond mere associations with crime and deviance. Through a detailed investigation of the case of Antonio, a member of Italian organized crime who also pursues a career as a tattoo artist abroad, it reveals the complex interactions between his criminal identity and his situational identities as a migrant and artist. Antonio's distinctive situation leads to diverse social and self-representations, as his criminal identity intertwines with his migrant and artistic identities, resulting in significant social actions that address real-world issues. Using narratives from a series of semi-structured interviews, this research offers insights into how criminal identity affects and molds Antonio's various identities, illuminating the complex mechanisms of identity interaction. It identifies crucial social actions—namely "belonging," "internalization," "creativity," and "rebellion"—enhancing our comprehension of identity dynamics and highlighting the critical influence of criminal identity within these processes.

This paper considers the experiences of one particular, rarely discussed group of ‘war children’: former pupils of the most prominent type of Nazi elite school, the Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalten or ‘Napolas’. Drawing upon a variety of original testimonies, the paper explores the hardships and dilemmas that Napola pupils (often as young as 12 or 13) faced as the Second World War drew to a close, and the ways in which ex-pupils have attempted to present this aspect of their past in autobiographical memoir literature and personal recollections. Public attitudes have certainly influenced these former pupils’ self-presentation, and their personal narratives of victimhood. However, their narrations also seem to contain recurring themes that are specific to their status as former elite-school pupils, and that have interesting implications for the ways in which we might approach such testimonies, both historically and methodologically.

EUROHERIT (ERC Starting Grant, 2015–2020) explores EU heritage initiatives and heritage and identity politics. The EUROHERIT research team conducted broad field research at eleven EHL sites in ten countries in the autumn of 2017 and the beginning of 2018. The remarks and suggestions provided in this policy brief are based on the team members’ observations and information gathered during the field research.

With a focus on migrant narratives, or the storytelling about migration, this volume considers the ways in which migration is and has been shaped by individual and collective experiences of agency, belonging and community. Driven by an agenda of deep listening, each chapter presents a narrative directly derived from qualitative research, an outline of the methodological framing as well as narrative analysis. Through close attention to the narrative, its performative aspects and its ruptures and silences, authors identify patterns and material in the fabric of such telling and retelling of stories that open up new perspectives on the migrant experience. This book develops a methodology of "dwelling with stories" that allows for sustained and slow interrogation of the migrant experience and the accompanying decisions that shape narratives around mobility across borders. Its structure is innovative by emphasising the migrant voice and reflecting on the scholars' positionality, while also offering new theoretical contributions that will advance the field of narrative analysis. The book will appeal to academics, students and practitioners in a wide range of subject areas within the humanities and social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, human geography, migration/ refugee/ diaspora studies and oral history.
