Parallel Coordinates

Scientists and researchers using three different examples of modern visualization technology will share their knowledge and experience on how Visual Data Analysis has enhanced their productivity. Several "how to" examples will be presented during this panel discussion showing the use of emerging technologies and solutions for analyzing, displaying and interacting with large quantities of data.

This paper describes the optimization of a complex dairy farm simulation model using two quite different methods of optimization, the Genetic algorithm (GA) and the Lipschitz Branch-and-Bound (LBB) algorithm. These techniques have been used to improve an agricultural system model developed by Dexcel Limited, New Zealand, which describes a detailed representation of pastoral dairying scenarios and contains an 8-dimensional parameter space. The model incorporates the sub-models of pasture growth and animal metabolism, which are themselves complex in many cases. Each evaluation of the objective function, a composite 'Farm Performance Index (FPI)', requires simulation of at least a one-year period of farm operation with a daily time-step, and is therefore computationally expensive. The challenge in the Information Visualization (Infovis) field is two-fold: the exploration of raw data with intuitive visualization techniques and the discover of new techniques to enhance the visualization power of well-known infovis approaches, improving the synergy between the user and the mining tools. This work pursues the second goal, presenting the use of interactive automatic analysis combined with visual presentation. To demonstrate such ideas, we present three approaches aiming to improve multivariate visualizations. The first approach, named Frequency Plot, combines frequencies of data occurrences with interactive filtering to identify clusters and trends in subsets of the database. The second approach, called Relevance Plot, corresponds to assign different shades of color to visual elements according to their relevance to a user’s specified set of data properties. The third approach makes use of basic statistical analysis presented in a visual format, to assist the analyst in discovering useful information. The three approaches were implemented in a tool enabled with refined versions of four well-known existent visualization techniques, and the results show an improvement in the usability of visualization techniques employed.

To allow a more rigorous understanding of animal gene regulatory networks, the Berkeley Drosophila Transcription Network Project (BDTNP) has developed a suite of methods that support quantitative, computational analysis of three-dimensional (3D) gene expression patterns with cellular resolution in early Drosophila embryos. Here we report the first components of a visualization tool, PointCloudXplore, that allows the relationships between different gene’s expression to be analyzed using the BDTNP’s datasets. PointCloudXplore uses the established visualization techniques of multiple views, brushing, and linking to support the analysis of high-dimensional datasets that describe many genes ’ expression. In this research, we explore the integration of computational and visual approaches, to contribute to the analysis of complex geospatial data. Computational analysis based on the SOM is used in a framework for data mining, knowledge discovery and spatial analysis, for uncovering the structure, patterns, relationships and trends in the data. The framework is informed by current understanding of the effective application of visual variables for cartographic and information design, by developing theories on interface metaphors for geospatial information displays, and by previous empirical studies of map and information visualization effectiveness. Background The DNA microarray technology allows the measurement of expression levels of thousands of genes under tens/hundreds of different conditions. In microarray data, genes with similar functions usually co-express under certain conditions only [1]. Thus, biclustering which clusters genes and conditions simultaneously is preferred over the traditional clustering technique in discovering these coherent genes. Various biclustering algorithms have been developed using different bicluster formulations. Unfortunately, many useful formulations result in NP-complete problems. An algorithm is presented which creates planar as well as arbitrarily curved sections of free form volumes. The algorithm itself can be used as a subroutine for algorithms which are able to perform more general intersections of free form volumes, e.g. boolean operations on two free form volumes.

The research reported here integrates computational, visual, and cartographic methods to develop a novel geo-visual analytic strategy for exploring and understanding spatio-temporal and multivariate patterns. The developed methodology and tools can cluster, sort, and visualize large datasets and help analysts investigate complex patterns across multivariate, spatial, and temporal dimensions. Specifically, the approach involves a self-organizing map, a parallel coordinate plot, several forms of reorderable matrices (including several ordering methods), a novel geographic small multiple display, and a 2-dimensional cartographic color design method.
