This case demonstrates an acute case of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) caused by cerebral metastasis from a small cell lung cancer, the only such case documented in the literature. A 54-year-old male presented to the emergency department for worsening headache and diplopia, secondary to INO. On further examination, a CT scan of the chest revealed a 6.1 × 4.8 × 6.8 cm solid mass in the right lower lung consistent with small-cell lung cancer. T2-weighted MRI exhibited bilateral supratentorial and infratentorial lesions interpreted as metastatic cancer. The patient's symptoms, including INO, were caused by the mass effect from the metastatic brain lesions.

The aims of this study were to determine the level of satisfaction with life among adolescents from Portuguese immigrant families in Switzerland and the factors related thereto. The sample consisted of 93 participants (mean age = 16.1 years; SD = 1.4). The mean duration of sojourn in Switzerland was 7.2 years. A control group of 187 Portuguese youth was also included in the study. There were no significant differences in level of life satisfaction between Portuguese adolescents living in Portugal and those living in Switzerland. Whereas demographic factors accounted for only 8% of the variance explained, demographic and psychosocial factors accounted for 31% of the variance explained. Psychological symptoms were the most important predictor of life satisfaction. Behavioral problems, gender, and mastery were also found to be significant predictors of life satisfaction.

Persiste con el sangrado, el cual se asocia a pancitopenia, por lo que se decide aspirado medular, y se halla hipocelularidad. This stand is about the materials produced during the application of a PROFILES module in a Portuguese school to students between 12 and 15 years old. The module includes a teacher’s guide, educational materials, and instructions to build a color box. It is recognized that it is very important to apply a pre-test and post-test to know student’s misconceptions about this topic and their evolution. The materials can be acquired easily and at low cost. Variations can be made to improve the color box, or a degree of freedom can be given to students to enhance their creativity. It is intentional to use PhET’s simulation to understand, visualize the phenomena and guide student’s conclusions. Epidemiological data on hereditary cerebellar ataxia (HCA) and hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) are scarce. To present the prevalence and distribution of HCA and HSP in Portugal. Population-based, nationwide, systematic survey, from January 1, 1994, through April 15, 2004, in Portugal. Multiple sources of information were used (review of clinical files, active collaboration of neurologists and geneticists, and investigation of affected families), but the main source was active collaboration of general practitioners. Patients were examined by the same team of neurologists, using homogeneous inclusion criteria. The clinical data were registered, and all families were genetically tested. Overall, 1336 patients from a population of 10,322 million were diagnosed as having HCA or HSP, a prevalence of 12.9 per 100,000 population. Hereditary cerebellar ataxia was more prevalent (prevalence, 8.9 per 100,000 population; 5.6 for dominant and 3.3 for recessive ataxias) than HSP (prevalence, ...

Complex III of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (CIII) catalyzes transfer of electrons from reduced coenzyme Q to cytochrome c. Low biochemical activity of CIII is not a frequent etiology in disorders of oxidative metabolism and is genetically heterogeneous. Recently, mutations in the human tetratricopeptide 19 gene (TTC19) have been involved in the etiology of CIII deficiency through impaired assembly of the holocomplex. We investigated a consanguineous Portuguese family where four siblings had reduced enzymatic activity of CIII in muscle and harbored a novel homozygous mutation in TTC19. The clinical phenotype in the four sibs was consistent with severe olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy, although their age at onset differed slightly. Interestingly, three patients also presented progressive psychosis. The mutation resulted in almost complete absence of TTC19 protein, defective assembly of CIII in muscle, and enhanced production of reactive oxygen species in cultured skin fibroblasts. Our findings add to the array of mutations in TTC19, corroborate the notion of genotype/phenotype variability in mitochondrial encephalomyopathies even within a single family, and indicate that psychiatric manifestations are a further presentation of low CIII.

The blast-furnace operating diagram proposed by Rist was revised to direct reduction and was specifically applied to the Midrex NGTM process. The use of this graphical tool in the study of an industrial process highlighted the staggered nature of the reduction in the shaft furnace with, in particular, the existence of a prereduction zone in the upper part where metallization is thermodynamically impossible. A sensitivity study also showed the impact of the in situ reforming rate on the ability of the gas to completely reduce iron oxides. Finally, we graphically defined the minimum quality required for the top gas to produce direct-reduced iron.

Reconhecendo a importância do papel insubstituível que as actividades práticas no campo desempenham nos processos de ensino e de aprendizagem da Geologia, e também na promoção da Educação Ambiental, elaborou-se uma planificação e desenvolveu-se uma saída de campo às minas de ouro de Castromil (Paredes, Porto). A actividade contribuiu para a divulgação e valorização de aspectos geológico/mineiros de interesse relevante e para a protecção ambiental do local. One of the main problems is to achieve an adequate monitoring of the cutting conditions in order to detect and correct in-time operational problems or prevent the loss of productivity due to an over chute in quality at a level that is below the required standards. Soils under Mediterranean climate conditions frequently have low to very low levels of soil organic matter (SOM), as a result of low biomass production under the predominantly rainfed conditions and the intensive tillage operations commonly practiced. In order to assess both short and long-term impacts of soil tillage and land use on soil organic carbon, two sets of experiments were performed. One consisted in the identification and soil analysis of 3 pairs of sites under different soil types and land use over 5 to 30 years; in the second experiment a long-term fallow area was repeatedly submitted to different types of soil tillage management (mouldboard plough + disc harrow; non-inversion tine cultivation; no-till) over 3 years. Walkability is defined, generally, as to which extent an urban environment is considered prone to walking. Having different tools in order to measure this index, helps the experts to better address the problems that contribute for a lower walkability index. This work presents a solution for the assessment of pedestrian infrastructures based on 3D scanning, using 3D cameras, and scene segmentation, addressing the contribution that the quality of sidewalks influence walkability. The methodology applied returns a classification of each sidewalk analyzed, helping the professionals to understand where the problems reside and address them. It was applied in an area around Instituto Superior Tcnico in Lisbon, Portugal, evaluating the sidewalks in the area and, potentially, generating data that can be used in order to improve walkability. A enxaqueca e uma entidade clinica classica com caracteristicas bem definidas, mas tambem com alguma variabilidade. Tem um perfil temporal paroxistico, com episodios de frequencia e duracao variaveis, intervalados por periodos totalmente assintomaticos. A prevalencia da enxaqueca no adulto situa-se entre 10% e 15%, com consequencias socio-economicas importantes. E aceite uma maior prevalencia da enxaqueca no sexo feminino; a razao homem:mulher e, consoante os estudos, de 1:2-3. A historia de enxaqueca inicia-se habitualmente em adolescentes ou jovens adultos, podendo surgir na infância. Rapazes e meninas serao igualmente atingidos; o predominio do sexo feminino so aparece na adolescencia. No entanto, em cerca de 10% dos casos a enxaqueca aparece depois dos 40 anos. Uma primeira crise depois dos 45 anos, sendo possivel, obriga a investigacao clinica para exclusao de uma cefaleia sintomatica.

O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de, atraves de pesquisa na legislacao aplicavel concernente e em bibliografia pertinente ao tema dos beneficios fiscais e suas perspectivas de atracao de investimentos privados aos estados, agir como mais um instrumento de consulta que possa fortalecer a decisao do empresario atacadista importador no momento da escolha por localidade na qual objetive implantar ou expandir empreendimentos. Neste sentido, acredita-se na relevância de discutir as praticas estaduais de beneficios fiscais – ICMS – quando ha consciencia de que dentro da estrutura de custos do investidor, o tributario representa uma significativa rubrica. Este artigo busca elaborar uma visão comparada sobre algumas das leituras sobre a noção de igualdade que foram desenvolvidas por autores distintos do final do século XVII à primeira metade do século XX. Alguns autores específicos foram escolhidos para esta finalidade, embora não sejam certamente os únicos que trouxeram contribuições importantes para o desenvolvimento do conceito nas ciências humanas e no imaginário político. O objetivo é o de mostrar como as diversas leituras sobre as ideias de igualdade e desigualdade, desenvolvidas por estes autores, contrastam entre si e remetem a matrizes de pensamento distintas. O exame dos pensamentos destes autores, relacionados à ideia de igualdade, permite também atentar para alguns dos modelos clássicos relacionados a esta discussão.

Este artigo objetiva discutir uma das mais recentes modalidades historiográficas que, ao lado da História Comparada e de outros campos como o da História Transnacional e o das Histórias Conectadas, defendem a proposta de lidar com ‘procedimentos relacionais” – aqui entendidos como aqueles que se encaminham para além das tradicionais abordagens historiográficas e atentam para os gestos historiográficos da comparação, cruzamento, interconexão e ultrapassagem dos limites nacionais e civilizacionais na escolha dos objetos historiográficos. A História Cruzada é esta modalidade enfatizada na parte principal do presente artigo, que considera que os procedimentos relacionais – entre os quais se enquadra o gesto historiográfico do “cruzamento” ou do “entrelaçamento” – podem se referir à definição do objeto de pesquisa, modos narrativos, procedimentos analíticos, cruzamento sistemático de fontes e outros aspectos da operação historiográfica
