Parnasianismo

French Parnassian literature was the one that most contributed to the origins of Hispanic Modernism, being Puerto Rico Modernism no exception. In spite of the late presence of Romanticism, attached to the historic contexts of insularity and Independence, the reception of Parnassianism meant the adoption of a series of models that incorporated Puerto Rico literature to the Fin de siècle spirit. This article deals with the translation and reception of the Parnasse Contemporain during the last third of the 19th century. That time was marked by the standards of an outdated Postromanticism and the first refreshing essays of authors as José de Jesús Domínguez, that were inspired by French Parnassian poets such as Gautier, Heredia or Leconte de Liste.

Ruben Darío’s poetic career runs parallel to the intrinsic development of Hispanic
Modernism, from his first Romantic and Parnassian attempts to his later assimilation of
Decadentism and Symbolism novelties. 19th century French lyric, and specifically, the
Parnasse contemporain school played a fundamental role in the origins of literary
modernity of Hispanic letters. In its epicenter, Darío represented the evolution of the Fin de siècle spirit. From his first steps in Central America to his important stay in 1893 Paris,
where the first contact with Symbolism happened, Parnassianism was undoubtedly the
aesthetics that, almost exclusively, shaped the poetic voice of our major Modernist.

Beyond the events of the Spanish-American war, 1898 was a landmark in the development of Hispanic poetry. After the end of the 19th century, which was dominated by the patterns of Romanticism and Parnassianism, the entry into the 20th century was primarily conducted by the adaptation of Symbolism. However, Puerto Rico had a special context due to its insularity and Independence wars, what led to the abidance of 19th century patterns. Between Moll Boscana’s Mi misa rosa (1904) and Lago’s Cofre de sándalo (1927), the Parnassian canon actively ruled the directions of the Puerto Rican Modernism, thus slowing down the assimilation of Decadentism, Symbolism, Avant-garde and the entry of modernity in the island.

Rubén Darío’s poetry can be divided into two well different periods, taking into account the French influence : before 1893, when he first visited Paris, and the period after that, marked by capital titles such as Prosas profanas and Cantos de vida y esperanza. Once the exclusively Parnassian first Modernism had reached its climax –the two first Azul editions period– Darío assimilated in the French capital the Decadent-Symbolist literature. From then, Darío’s work and with it, the whole poetic Hispanic Modernism changed into the adoption of a new canon. Although this one would never abandon some Parnassian connections, the adequate motivation to end 19th century in the Hispanic letters would be found in other expressive models of a more complete modernity.

Este artigo propõe apresentar algumas reflexões sobre a formação e a consolidação da imagem de Francisca Júlia da Silva, entre os séculos XIX e XX, como a legítima poeta parnasiana brasileira, muito embora a crítica e a história da literatura, posteriormente, tenham relegado à escritora um lugar secundário no Parnasianismo. Desde o início de sua carreira, ela preferiu escrever grande parte de sua obra à luz dos modelos parnasianos franceses, principalmente de José-Maria de Heredia e de Leconte de Lisle. Mesmo produzindo uma literatura heterogênea, que estabelece profundos diálogos com o Romantismo e o Simbolismo, a escritora paulista esteve sempre próxima aos valores e aos códigos parnasianos, praticando-os com rigor e domínio da arte poética, o que, em seu tempo, colocou-a em destaque nas rodas literárias, sendo bem recebida pela crítica literária, ainda resistente às produções de mulheres. Neste texto, para a sustentação das ideias aqui colocadas, faz-se uma leitura geral das relações de Francisca Júlia com a escola parnasiana, a partir de suas produções em jornais e revistas e, também, em seus livros, em específico, Mármores (1895), obra de grande repercussão em sua carreira na literatura. Esta proposta reflexiva está apoiada, particularmente, na recepção crítica da poeta que circulou na imprensa periódica daquela época, bem como em estudos sobre o Parnasianismo brasileiro, como os de Péricles Ramos (1961) e Secchin (2004), entre outros.

When tracking the origins of Hispanic Modernism, Cuban literature has always been privileged by critics. This is due to the early assimilation of the French Parnasse aesthetics in its literary system. From the 1870s, Parnassianism – either read in French or translated – was one of the foundational stimuli that led Martí or Julián del Casal to change their conception of literature. This fact, in spite of being assumed by Hispanic historiography, remains as one of the main to-be-revised clichés. In this paper, a broad evaluation of the presence and relevance of the Parnasse in Cuba will be proposed, taking into account its great contribution in the birth of a new aesthetics and expressive level that inspired soon the transformation of Spanish poetry towards its contemporaneity.

Resumen
Este ensayo propone que, en Puerto Rico, durante los orígenes del Movimiento Mo- dernista Hispanoamericano de finales del siglo XIX, se dio el segundo afloramiento de la estética barroca en la literatura latinoamericana. Este período histórico se distinguió por la acentuación de las desigualdades sociales en la Isla y el resto del Caribe, obligando a los escritores a utilizar recursos estructurales y lingüísticos, propios de la estética barroca del siglo XVII, tales como el uso de un lenguaje preciosista, hermético, alegórico y simbólico con el fin de evitar la censura. Como evidencia de este fenómeno, esta investigación analiza dos poemas del escritor puertorriqueño José de Jesús Domínguez, Las huríes blancas (1886) y Ecos de siglo (1889), con la finalidad de identificar elementos neobarrocos presen- tes en los mismos.

RESUMEN

Más allá de su controvertida fama como novelista y cronista oficial del sistema literario del Fin de Siglo, la figura del guatemalteco Enrique Gó­mez Carrillo (1873-1927) apenas ha sido reivindicada en tanto que primer teórico cabal y máximo divulgador de las corrientes poéticas francesas del decadentismo y el simbolismo. Radicado en su privilegiada atalaya parisina, desde su primer libro, Esquisses (1892) y hasta aproximadamente el año crucial de 1898 nadie como él promovió una renovación expresiva del modernismo, de su canon autorial y de su repertorio de elementos simbólicos y conceptuales. Guía de Rubén Darío y con él de toda la juventud poética hispánica en la superación de los modelos parnasianos que habían dominado la lírica durante el último tercio del XIX, Gómez Carrillo representa en sí mismo una época de la literatura en español, marcada por la búsqueda continua de universalidad y modernidad.

Bajo el término francés "Parnasse" se alista un selecto conjunto de escritores de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, cuyo nombre deriva a su vez de una antología fundacional editada por Alphonse Lemerre en 1866. Este Parnaso constituye una escuela poética surgida como reacción al estado de la lírica francesa en su período posromántico, con una sólida cohesión estética, intelectual, lingüística, generacional y sociocultural, que con el tiempo hubo de imponerse a las particularidades individuales de cada uno de sus miembros. Esta promoción de jóvenes poetas, bohemios, contrarios al arte burgués dominante, estuvo en un principio encabezada por Catulle Mendès. Con el objeto de ofrecer una poesía fundada en conocimientos empíricos, el Parnaso privilegió la voluntad de adquirir un saber técnico aplicado a su propio campo, celebrando así al poeta artista y artesano, transfiguración del científico positivista, en detrimento del poeta inspirado del romanticismo, bardo por ciencia infusa. La selección de poemas incluidos en esta antología obedece no solo a su representatividad respecto a las líneas temáticas y estilísticas fundamentales de la Escuela parnasiana, sino también a su repercusión en el contexto literario del "fin de siècle". La mayoría de estas piezas se traducen ahora por vez primera al español.

Parnassianism and Symbolism constituted the origins of the contemporary poetry itself. The objective of this article is to study the interrelations between these poetic movements and their contribution to the overcoming of Romanticism and 19th century aesthetics. It will be done through a diachronic analysis of both poetic paradigms and at different levels, from epistemology to rhetoric. Special attention will be given to Parnassianism, the most forgotten secular poetic school, and particularly to its connections to the authors that have been considered the fathers of Symbolism. Finally, the focus will be centered in some extra-literary determining factors like power struggles and patriotism and their role in configuring the poetic solutions at the turn of the century.

RESUMO: Este é um trabalho de História da Literatura onde se tenta abarcar numa só visão o Realismo-Naturalismo-Parnasianismo, estudando alguns pontos relevantes do ambiente em que foram fomentados, visto não podermos em um curto trabalho abarcar todos os aspectos da época em que surgiram. O Realismo existe como tendência e como escola, e dentre os motivos que o levaram a ser escola lembramos a influência do Positivismo na cultura de forma geral e o episódio de 1848. Também importante foi a Escola de Recife, cujos principais vultos são Tobias Barreto e Sílvio Romero. Três questões na época abalaram a sociedade: a militar, a Coimbrã e a religiosa. Se a princípio encaramos Realismo-Naturalismo-Parnasianismo juntos, é necessário depois tecer algumas considerações sobre os dois ramos que surgiram do Realismo: Naturalismo e Parnasianismo, este visto ao lado de outra tendência da época: a poesia realista. ABSTRACT: This is a project of History of Literature, where we attempt to see in a unique vision Realism – Naturalism – Parnasianism, studying some relevant points from the ambient where they were developed. Realism exists like tendency and it exists like school, too. Between motives for Realism become school, we remember Positivism's influence in the general culture and the 1848's episode. The School of Recife also was important; their principal participants were Tobias Barreto and Silvio Romero. Three questions affect the society in that époque: military question, Coimbrã question and the religious question. In begin we see Realism – Naturalism – Parnasianism together, but after we need consider two rams came from Realism: Naturalism and Parnasianism, this is seen together other tendency of époque: the realist poetry.

In Mexico, the turnover from Romanticism to Hispanic Modernism was favored by the key contribution of French Parnassianism that was first stimulated by critics and translators in newspapers and magazines. Gradually, a Parnassian canon was established and it was dominant until around 1898. That year the essential magazine Revista moderna was published. There, Parnassianism coexisted with the most original tendencies, like Decandentism and Symbolism. A new canon oriented the plans of modernity, and Parnassianism started to be relegated to simple rhetoric, something more typical of 19th than 20th century.

Apesar do estatuto de proa na nossa literatura oitocentista, João Penha (1839-1919) foi sendo votado, ao longo dos anos, a um tácito e perverso esquecimento. Esta edição crítico-genética das suas obras vem preencher uma lacuna importante na nossa bibliografia, repondo em análise um autor com importância histórico-cultural, reunindo milhares de documentos dispersos ou em risco de perecerem e finalmente disponibilizando os textos à comunidade - académica e não só - que aqui encontrará materiais bastos para a elaboração ensaística.
Poeta de recorte eminentemente pessoal, João Penha inscreve-se com originalidade nas correntes estéticas do tempo em que viveu, e por isso a sua obra - aqui reunida pela primeira vez - se reveste de particular interesse, ao ilustrar exemplarmente a amálgama complexa que caracterizou as últimas décadas do séc. XIX e os primeiros anos da centúria seguinte.

O poeta Honório Armond, nascido em Barbacena, Minas Gerais, em 1891, e falecido em 1958, publicou três livros durante sua vida, cada qual com apenas uma edição. O primeiro deles, "Ignotae deae", foi publicado em 1917. Quatro anos depois, saiu "Perante o além" e, em 1932, foi ao prelo o volume com o título em francês "Les voix et les bonheurs". Armond, porém, continuou a divulgar seus poemas de forma esparsa em diversos periódicos. No ano de 1991, a Academia Barbacenense de Letras reuniu os três livros em um só volume e, em 2011, como parte das comemorações do centenário do poeta, foi lançada a "Poesia completa de Honório Armond" aos cuidados das pesquisadoras Eliana Scotti Muzzi e Nancy Maria Mendes.

The poet Honorio Armond, born in Barbacena, Minas Gerais, in 1891, and died in 1958, published three books during his lifetime, each in only one edition. The first of them, "Ignotae deae", was published in 1917. Four years later, "Perante o além" came out, and in 1932, the volume with the French title "Les voix et les bonheurs" went to press. Armond, however, continued to publish his poems sparsely in various periodicals. In 1991, the Barbacenense Academy of Letters gathered the three books into a single volume, and in 2011, as part of the celebrations of the poet's centennial, the "Complete Poetry of Honorio Armond" was released under the care of researchers Eliana Scotti Muzzi and Nancy Maria Mendes.

Beyond his controversial reputation as a novelist and official historian
of the Fin de Siècle literary system, the Guatemalan poet Enrique Gómez
Carrillo (1873-1927) has scarcely been vindicated as the first thorough
theorist and main popularizer of the French poetic trends of Decadentism and Symbolism. From his first book Esquisses (1892) to the important year of 1898, no one like him promoted, as a privileged Parisian observer, an expressive renovation of Modernism, its authorial canon and its repertoire of symbolic and conceptual elements. Also, he acted as a guidance for Rubén Darío and with him, for all the Hispanic young poets to overcome the Parnassian models that had dominated poetry during the last decades of 19th century. Gómez Carrillo represents a time of Spanish literature that was marked by the continuous search of universality and modernity.

The different French poetic trends in the 19th century, from Romanticism to Symbolism, not forgetting the importance of Parnassianism, helped to give birth to and consolidate Modernism in the Spanish-speaking countries. El Salvador, due to its geopolitical situation during the last thirty years of the 19th century, developed a literary system which, from very early, was one of the first and most decisive bastions of assimilation of these tendencies. Thanks to the translation, desemination and creative work by authors such as Mayorga Rivas, Gavidia and the young Darío, Salvadorian Modernism to the lead in this process, radiating its poetic cosmopolitism to other areas under its influence. Precisely because of this, because of the pristine and quality
features of its Modernism, El Salvador was also one of the last Hispanic countries to overcome Fin de Siècle aesthetics and be incorporated into
modernity.

António Feijó and Leopold Staff - poetic visions of the Orient against the background of Polish-Portuguese literary and cultural relations (from Parnassianism to palimpsest)

The article aims to discuss the Chinese cultural inspirations in Polish and Portuguese modernistic poetry. In the context of Polish-Portuguese literary relationships, late Romantic, Symbolic, Parnassianism-related and Oriental tendencies are presented in the works of a Portuguese poet António Feijó (1859 - 1917), with references to a selected aspsect of Leopold Staff' s works (1878-1957), too. A historical-literary analysis is accompanied by literary and cultural comparative studies. Within the comparative method of presenting the Parnassian palimpsests, as ''The Chines Lyric Book'' (''Cancioneiro Chinês'', 1890) by António Feijó and ''Fletnia chińska'' (1922) by Leopold Staff are categorised, has aroused the thesis about the independent&unique status of the works in question. Modernist visions of the Orient, understood to date a paraphrase or and adaptation of Chinese poetry read in translations from French, gain the  status of original works. The literary works in question fully deserve the title of cultural texts, the recipient of which will be a Polish reader, a lover of poetry inspired by French Parnassianism. The versose and the pages of prose written upon jade motifs trigger out multiple conotiations, mainly related to the grief of lost youth, love, life and time.

RESUMO: O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar alguns poemas do parnasianismo brasileiro, comumente massacrado pela crítica literária, como sendo uma espécie de arte destituída de paixão, cerebral e que não fazia mais que emular motivos e regras do parnaso europeu. O objetivo aqui é estabelecer ligações entre os poemas parnasianos e a escultura, uma vez que para Olavo Bilac, Raimundo Correia e Alberto Oliveira, o ápice da criação parnasiana ultrapassaria a ourivesaria verbal, a fim de transformar o próprio poema (predominantemente a forma soneto) em objeto de contemplação estética. Nesse sentido, para além da querela entre parnasianos e simbolistas e o fato de que este surge, no Brasil, como espécie de reação àquele (o que não é novidade, posto que o próprio parnasianismo se configurasse como resposta ao romantismo tardio), perceber as inflexões, mesmo dentro do parnasianismo, a partir de figuras como Francisca Júlia e Luiz Delfino, resulta fulcral para lançar nova luz às leituras feitas, desde o começo do século XX, sobre o parnaso brasileiro. ABSTRACT: This article seeks to analyze some poems from Brazilian Parnassianism, a movement commonly massacred by literary critic as being a sort of cerebral, passionless art that didn't do much more than emulate rules and motives from European Parnassus. The objective here is to establish links between Parnassian poems and sculpture, given that to Olavo Bilac, Raimundo Correia and Alberto Oliveira the apex of Parnassian creation would surpass verbal goldsmith with the goal of transforming the poem itself (mainly the sonnet) into an object of aesthetical contemplation. Thus, beyond the quarrel between Parnassians and Symbolists and the fact that the latter rises in Brazil as a form of answer to the first (which is nothing new, once Parnassianism itself would be given birth as an answer to late Romanticism), to notice the inflections inside Parnassianism through figures such as Francisca Júlia and Luiz Delfino becomes pivotal to throw new light on the readings performed since the start of the 20 th century about Brazilian Parnassianism.

The Brazilian poet Olavo Bilac (1865-1918) and the Nicaraguan Rubén Darío (1867-1916) exercised the same profession, were part of the same chapter of social history, shared the same cultural poetics and read the same authors. It is not essential to believe in the power of these aspects to recognize similitude in their poetic works. Among the goals of utmost importance shared by these poets, I have elected one: the production of the effect of beauty through sonority, that is, the sophisticated sonorous or musical work undertaken by both poets in search of beauty, without which, in the belle époque, a poem was not a poem. Therefore, I aim at contemplating in my reading some concepts and formulations that were in use at the time of the poems’ production, in order to consider their relation with the values and parameters that define quality at that period. Read against each other, the poems reciprocally illuminate themselves, furnishing relevant data to the works of interpretation dedicated to each poet; further, this approach contributes to a better understanding of the relation between poets of the Spanish and Portuguese languages. The comparative analysis I am presenting aims at instigating future works in the same direction.

En  esta  nota  pretendo,  en  primer  lugar,  mostrar  la  dificultad  de  asignarle  un  calificativo  a  Charles  Baudelaire poeta y, en consecuencia, situar su obra en un movimiento concreto: es posromántico, par-nasiano, simbolista, decadente o simplemente moderno. En segundo lugar, ejemplifico tal dificultad con el análisis del poema “Elevación”, mostrando los elementos que me permiten incluirlo en el simbolismo, para finalmente concluir, de los poemas ausentes en la traducción de Andrés Holguín, que la “práctica crítica”, en términos de Michael Sisson, predomina en su tarea de traductor. Es decir, Holguín destaca al poeta plenamente moderno y decadente, en cuya obra el mal predomina, eliminando, de este modo, la discusión con los lineamientos teóricos de movimientos como el Simbolismo y el Romanticismo.

Como se sabe, paralelamente à Geração de 70, desenrola-se um movimento poético parnasiano, contraposto à estética romântica e à sua extenuação ultrarromântica, do qual foi órgão A Folha (1868-1873), jornal literário publicado em Coimbra sob a direção de João Penha (Braga, 1838 – 1919). Não me interessa fazer aqui a história crítica desse Microcosmo Literário, conforme se subintitula, nem entrar na discussão sobre o que aproxima e distingue João Penha da escola parnasiana francesa. Este problema foi já consideravelmente tratado por vários estudiosos, a começar, e com bastante pormenor, por Álvaro Júlio da Costa Pimpão, no artigo “Algumas notas sobre a estética de João Penha”  (Pimpão, 1939: 519-560).
Proponho-me, antes, perceber em que medida o esteticismo de João Penha se articula com a apetência do autor para um sarcasmo, uma ironia e um humor insubmissos e ferozes, mas igualmente algo magoados e tristes. A imagem de um João Penha boémio e viciado em orgias não explica nada, como tem sido notado pelos mais atentos investigadores da obra do autor, de entre os quais se destaca Maria Amália Ortiz da Fonseca, que, em 1963, no seu livro Introdução ao Estudo de João Penha, afirmava: “É tempo de pôr de lado o mito de poeta boémio, gerado em Coimbra. Penha não é só isso, é muito mais do que isso – é o homem que preferiu abafar a sua mágoa de incompreendido e insatisfeito, incapaz de aceitar a realidade crua com que o mundo pretendia enfeitiçá-lo […]” (Fonseca, 1963: 16).
Da interação entre a poética formalista e o espírito epigramático e satírico de João Penha, sinal da insatisfação a que se refere aquela estudiosa (e vários contemporâneos de João Penha que o conheceram), advém, antes de mais, uma impressão de tensa ambiguidade que parece encerrar muitos significados humanos. É esta a linha de leitura que desenvolvo neste artigo, quer para conhecermos melhor a obra de João Penha, quer para compreendermos melhor um comportamento, uma atitude e uma forma de expressão e de espírito (a sátira) tão irredutivelmente humana e de tão difícil definição.
As palavras do próprio autor são talvez a melhor chave para compreendermos a magnitude de uma abundante e singular poesia satírica de que logo irradia uma tradição em poetas como Simões Dias, Cândido de Figueiredo ou Guerra Junqueiro. A obra poética do autor de Rimas (1882), no léxico e na arquitetura da frase, tem no horizonte mais próximo a produção dos árcades, que, na mundividência burguesa do Portugal da segunda metade de Oitocentos, estabelecem a ligação entre João Penha e o Classicismo. A ascendência desta produção está também nalgum do nosso “realismo satírico”, que não só vem já das cantigas de escárnio e maldizer, como também define as personalidades, inclinadas ao casticismo e à chufa ibérica, de um Abade de Jazente, um Cruz e Silva ou um Tolentino. Diz-nos, pois, João Penha, que explica a sua poesia reportando-se a duas características essenciais do ser humano: “Em todo o caso esses versos são feitos à minha imagem e semelhança, e, tendo observado que eu era, como todo o homem, um animal que ri e chora, entendi que devia revelar-me debaixo desses dois aspectos, – sem me rir à gargalhada, por ser coisa de mau gosto, e sem chorar como um recém-nascido, por ser uma coisa feia, que faz mal aos nervos” (Penha, 1898: 31). Artur Azevedo (1855-1908) is not only a big name in the history of Brazilian theater but also a protagonist who plays in other literature fields such as poetry. Surprisingly enough, a very few researchers have demonstrated a real interest in his verses  which were extensively published in the press, even so he was a frequent writer of the chapters of our parnasianism history. How, however, this poetry interacts with the poetical particularities of the Brazilian parnasianism? It is exactly that this article begins to answer, emphasizing what I called art of dramatic sonnet.
