Интерес к картинным рамам в России сегодня постепенно растет. А что же происходит в Европе, где еще в конце XIX века началось изучение картинных рам? Как там обстоит дело с их коллекционированием, сохранением и реставрацией? Эти вопросы затрагиваются в беседе российского специалиста по картинным рамам Оксаны Лысенко и немецкого коллекционера, реставратора, эксперта по картинным рамам Олафа Лемке.

This paper summarises restoration reports for various European frames.  The frames commonly reach the workshop from various regions or countries in order to be sold. Since they are trade objects by themselves, they usually do not contain a painting, neither the original nor the most recent one it contained. To be resold, most frames need some restoration.
By means of restoration it is possible to have a closer look at the frames and detect any earlier transformation. Although apparently only the latest cover over the original surface can be seen, but small surface finishing damages may allow the detection of successive layers over the earliest. A frame’s reverse also helps to identify the joining method according to, or not, the shape and surface ornamentation.

The paintings gallery of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum holds one of the great princely collections in Germany. Its core consists in the acquisitions of Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the late 17th and early 18th century. To house these paintings, the Duke ordered one of the first independent gallery-buildings in Europe to be erected as part of his palace Salzdahlum. But the current frames of the paintings rarely provide evidence of this long history of the collection. They are furthermore dominated by classicist picture frames of the 19th century. Just a small number of paintings still remains in their baroque frames, many stored in the museums depository. Those examples are today valuable sources for the otherwise not documented framings at the lost gallery of Salzdahlum palace. The surviving baroque frames encompass examples in which the paintings were originally acquired as well as products of local workshops, adapting and interpreting various stylistic influences.
Furthermore the observations for Braunschweig get contextualized in the wider development of gallery-framings throughout the 18th century.

Die Gemäldegalerie des Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museums zeigt eine der bedeutenden fürstlichen Sammlungen Deutschlands. Ihr Kernbestand geht auf die Erwerbungen Herzog Anton Ulrichs von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel im späten 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhundert zurück. Um seine Sammlung zu präsentieren, ließ der Herzog eines der ersten freistehenden Galeriegebäude Europas an seinem Schloss Salzdahlum errichten. Die gegenwärtigen Rahmungen der Gemälde geben jedoch nur wenige Hinweise auf diese lange Geschichte der Sammlung. Sie werden vielmehr von klassizistischen Rahmen des 19. Jahrhunderts dominiert. Nur eine relativ kleine Zahl von Bildern trägt noch ihre barocken Rahmen, viele von Ihnen verwahrt in den Depots des Museums. Diese Beispiele bilden heute wertvolle Quellen für die sonst nicht dokumentierten Rahmungen der Salzdahlumer Galerie. Der erhaltene Bestand reicht dabei von „Originalrahmen“, die wohl bereits mit den Gemälden erworben wurden, bis hin zu Produkten lokaler Werkstätten, die unterschiedlichste Einflüsse aufnahmen und neu interpretierten.
Darüber hinaus werden die Beobachtungen zur Braunschweiger Sammlung in den weiteren Kontext der Entwicklung der Galerierahmung im 18. Jahrhundert eingebunden.

В тексте изложена почти детективная история, связанная с "пропажей" рамы (как полагал директор Русского музея В.А. Пушкарев).

En el Palacio Real de Madrid, entre septiembre y diciembre, podemos contemplar la extraordinaria exposición "Obras Maestras del Museo de Capodimonte", en la que se muestran excepcionales piezas de, entre otros, Tiziano, El Greco, Mantegna, Brueghel, Van Dyck, Rafael o Ribera. Además, la exposición tiene un interés muy especial para el público español, ya que este museo fue una creación del, en ese momento, rey de Nápoles Carlos VII, y que luego, tras la muerte de Fernando VI, sería monarca de España con el título de Carlos III. En cuanto a la enmarcación, podremos observar una serie de tipos italianos poco conocidos en España, de los siglos XVI y XVII; pero también otros muy relacionados con los que se van a emplear en el ornato de las pinturas de las nuevas empresas arquitectónicas de FelipeV, La Granja, el Palacio Real o Riofrío, ya propios del siglo XVIII. El napolitano Museo de Capodimonte tiene su origen en la amplia colección de arte de una de las más poderosas y prestigiosas familias italianas del siglo XVI: los Farnesio, cuya fortuna se inició con la elección para Papa del Cardenal Alejandro Farnesio, y la formación del Ducado de Parma y Piacenza por su hijo Pierluigi. A esta amplísima colección de pinturas, esculturas, dibujos, armas y antigüedades, se añadieron las adquisiciones hechas en los siglos XVIII y XIX por los Borbones y la Casa de Saboya, las donaciones de algunas familias nobles napolitanas, como los Ávalos, obras provenientes de desamortizaciones eclesiásticas y las adquiridas, recientemente, por el propio Estado italiano. Carlos VII de Borbón, hijo de Felipe V y de Isabel de Farnesio, su segunda mujer, llegó al trono de Nápoles, el llamado Reino de Nápoles y Sicilia, en 1734, después de diversas vicisitudes militares, políticas y diplomáticas. Capodimonte fue iniciado en 1738 para ser una residencia de su Corte durante las jornadas de caza en el bosque que lo rodeaba. Al mismo tiempo, decidió trasladar a la "planta noble" de este nuevo palacio gran parte de la Colección Farnesio, que había heredado de su madre Isabel, última descendiente de la prestigiosa familia italiana. Desde las residencias de Parma, Piacenza y Colorno (famoso palacio y parque que inspiraron al de La Granja) fueron enviadas las piezas a Nápoles; pero fueron instaladas, al principio, en el antiguo Palacio Real del centro de la ciudad. A pesar de no estar completamente terminado Capodimonte, apenas fue rematada el ala del edificio situado frente al majestuoso Golfo de Nápoles, con el Vesubio al fondo, se instalaron gran parte de los libros, medallas, gemas y pinturas, expuestas por escuelas, en las doce salas principales del Palacio. En 1758 se constituyó este nuevo Museo, inicialmente denominado Farnesiano, y fue completado con más obras traídas del Palacio Farnesio de Roma. Al siguiente año Carlos se trasladó a España para reinar como Carlos III y le sucedió su hijo Fernando IV de Borbón. Las colecciones se fueron acrecentando año a año y en 1768 se estableció un reglamento que regulaba el horario y las visitas de quien solicitase verlo, el acceso de los copistas, las competencias de guardas y conservadores; en definitiva, el Museo instalado en Capodimonte había pasado a ser, de exclusivamente farnesiano, como había sido en sus orígenes, a un museo, por sus contenidos y definición, "borbónico".

The Frisian sculptor Johannes Kinnema had to make a test piece in 1664 before he was ordered to make the most exquisite picture frame ever made in The Netherlands, the frame for the painting 'the battle at the Zuiderzee' by J.Th. Blanckerhoff. Kinnema was given an huge bonus finished his job in June 1668. This test case, the wooden coat of arms of West-Friesland, is of course much smaller than the enormous and overwhelming picture frame, but not less impressive.

The British architect, designer, and theorist A.W.N. Pugin, champion of the Gothic Revival, was an avid collector of medieval and Renaissance works of art. He was particularly fascinated by Albrecht Dürer and owned numerous examples of his work, the most important of which was a pair of double-sided panel paintings. These panels still exist, now divided between the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and are presently attributed to Dürer’s pupil Hans Schäufelein. This article examines the history of Pugin’s “Dürer” paintings and considers the evidence for their installation and display at The Grange, Pugin’s influential home in Ramsgate, which he designed and furnished in 1843-44.

Since 2000, there has been a great increase in studies on the spoliation of Jews in France. This research has established the chronology and topography of antisemitic spoliation, identified its actors and assessed its scale. In doing so, it has led to the formulation of new questions. Previous research sought a precise understanding of the linkage between the quest for economic gain and the implementation of racial extermination at the very core of the looting process. New research, which varies greatly in its scale and scope, draws on an ever-wider range of sources, some of which were never previously studied, and employs many innovative methodological approaches. However, so far, it has paid no attention to archival images, which have been used merely for the purposes of illustration. Yet such photographs constitute documents that can help us to understand precisely how the actors involved in this looting actually viewed their work. This article examines an album of 85 photographs of the looting of Jews in Paris that has been preserved in the federal archives of Koblenz under the shelf mark B 323-311
