Qur'anic Manuscripts

This paper provides updated digital images of four Qurʾān fragments from Chicago's Oriental Institute Museum (OIM) that appeared in Nabia Abbott’s Rise of the North Arabic Script, and calls attention to features of their paleography and vocalization which are not apparent from her original black-and-white plates. In doing so, it demonstrates that these four fragments all belong to the same copy of the Qurʾān, which is also the same Qurʾān as nineteen leaves in Paris’ Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) and two leaves in Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). All twenty-five folios of this Qurʾān contain a unique vocalization system that represents /a/ and /u/ with miniature red forms of alif and wāw. This system of “letter-form” vocalization signs is unattested in other Qurʾān manuscripts and corresponds with a type of vocalization which medieval sources describe as shakl al-shiʿr: “the marking of poetry.” The subsequent discussion analyzes the features of this shakl al-shiʿr system and contextualizes it within the history of both this Qurʾān manuscript and Arabic writing as a whole.

Considered one of the most important documents in
the history of the transmission of the Qurʾān, the Sanʿāʾ
palimpsest (Codex Sanʿāʾ 1) is remarkable because of its
unique lower text (i.e., erased text), which differs from
the canonical edition in both wording and the arrange-
ment of the sūras (chapters).

This talk focuses on an ancient Qur’ānic manuscript, discovered in the ‘Amr Mosque in Fustat (Old-Cairo), in the early 19th century. The manuscript is today fragmentary and dispersed around the world. It is nevertheless remarkable in its monumental size and composite structure, as well as in its fascinating history over centuries. I will present the main achievements of my multidisciplinary research carried in 2020-21, that shed light on the contexts of production, use and preservation of this exceptional artifact until our days

The scribing of Qur’ānic codices today has special artistic features. One of the most important features is the systematic and organized writing of Qur’ānic verses in each part (juz’), and page. Today’s most famous name is the Qur’ān written by Uthmān Ṭāhā, a Syrian scribe whose work has been distributed in recent decades in various Islamic countries under the title “Muṣḥaf al-Madina al-Nabawiyya” by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur’ān. The pages of this Qur’ān contain 15 lines, and each page ends with the conclusion of a verse. Also, each of the thirty parts of this Qur’ān has been carefully designed and written in 20 pages, beginning every part at the beginning of the page and ending it at the bottom of the page. But in fact, this style of Qur’ān transcribing, which is tied to the name of Uthmān Ṭāhā, has had many examples among the scribes of the Qur’ān during the Ottoman period, and after that, during the last hundred years. This article, by reviewing the history of this style of transcribing the Qur’ān, shows that the Ottoman scribes did not invent this artistic style during the 10th/16th to 14th/20th centuries, but the history of this type of systematic and organized Qur’ān writing dates back to much older times, and in Iran to the 5th/11th century. The Muṣḥaf of Muḥammad al-Zanjānī (dated 531/1137), and the Muṣḥaf of Zarrīn Qalam (dated 582/1186), are two very advanced examples of this art in the 6th/12th century. In the beginning, the number of rules and patterns of Iranian scribes for the systematic and organized writing of the Qur’ān was about 30, but gradually before the 10th/16th century, it was expanded to about 470 cases. Almost all Ottoman scribes in recent centuries have paid attention to only two things: first, ending each page at the conclusion of the verse, and second, starting each part (juz’) of the Qur’ān from the beginning of the page and ending it at the bottom of the page.

"The study of early Qur’ānic manuscripts emerged in academia as early as the late 18th century. François Déroche identifies the origins of this quest with the Danish theologian and orientalist Jacob Georg Christian Adler (1756-1834). Adler, who was fascinated by Kūfic inscriptions, spent time studying early Qur’ānic fragments kept at the Det Kongelige Bibliotek (The Royal Library) in Copenhagen, Denmark.Today ‒ thanks to Alba Fedeli ‒ it has become possible to draw the history of Qur’ānic manuscript studies from 1856 to 1999. Nevertheless, in her concise chronology, Fedeli does not mention the works of Tayyar Altıkulaç, who is best known for his contributions in reproducing several ancient manuscripts of the Qur’ān ‒ mostly attributed to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ‒ in facsimile editions, in collaboration with the Research Centre For Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) in Istanbul. This article is intended to expand Fedeli’s chronology by placing Altıkulaç and his al-muṣḥaf al-sharīf volumes, dedicated to codices attributed to the caliphs ʿUthmān and ʿAlī, into the framework of Qur’ānic manuscript studies."

Pour la communauté scientifique, l’histoire de l’élaboration du Coran demeure pleine d’incertitudes et de zones d’ombre. Dans quelles conditions s’est constituée la Vulgate ? Quand et comment est-on parvenu à la fixation définitive du texte ? Ces questions sont aujourd’hui au cœur d’une réflexion savante à laquelle contribue l’étude des manuscrits coraniques. 
Dans ce débat, la mise au jour de nouveaux matériaux et leur étude progressive modifient sensiblement notre vision de l’histoire du Coran. Jusque dans les années 1980, nous pensions que les manuscrits, y compris les plus anciens, reflétaient un texte d’ores et déjà standardisé, et ne pouvaient, en conséquence, nous renseigner sur l’élaboration du texte coranique. Depuis ces dernières décennies, l’étude de quelques fragments anciens, découverts dans la grande mosquée de Ṣan‘ā’, nous invite à reconsidérer notre appréciation sur la fixation du texte coranique. L’un des témoins les plus significatifs est un palimpseste dissimulant une version du Coran sensiblement différente du canon coranique. En raison de son caractère exceptionnel, la nature et la fonction d’un tel document restent difficile à saisir.
La présente note d’information concerne un autre fragment de Ṣan‘ā’, le DaM 01-29.1, qui pourrait permettre de faire le lien entre le palimpseste et notre histoire de la transmission manuscrite, et éclairer ainsi un peu plus l’histoire de la fixation du canon coranique.

This is a study of the Quranic manuscript Arabe 334a held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It is a vocalized manuscript representing a Quranic reading tradition that falls outside the canonical ten reading traditions known to us today. It is shown that this manuscript, on the basis of verse division, is a Hijazi (probably Medinan) manuscript. The reading represented in the vocalization is likely also a non-canonical Hijazi reading. This article contains an edition of the folios of this manuscript and an in-depth study of the orthography, vocalization, verse division, and general principles and specific variants of the reading.

The aims of this thesis are to apply the two main goals of textual criticism as practiced with the New Testament to the text of the Qur’ān: 1) to discern the earliest possible form of the text, and 2) to illumine the history of the text. A selection was made of small portions of text of similar genre and length in both books (Acts 7:1-8 and Surah 14:35-41). The texts of these portions from twenty manuscripts from each tradition are collated including the very oldest manuscripts available. The variants observed are intensively analysed, categories of type are established and then used as the basis of comparison.
The similarities and differences in kinds of variants are thoroughly explored, taking into account the differences in kinds of script, the effects of oral tradition on written transmission, and the role of centralised ideological control on the texts. These comparisons are then examined in regard to recovering the earliest possible forms of the texts of both traditions and illuminating the histories of the development of these texts into standardised text-forms. Intentional variants in both traditions are given special attention.
The thesis concludes that whereas there is the strong possibility of recovering reliable versions of the earliest autographic forms of the New Testament books, there is not the possibility of recovering the earliest authoritative forms of the Qur’ān. The current version is shown to be the result of a long and complex development to create a precise form of the text supporting Islamic dogma, instead of a version preserving the earliest authoritative forms of the text. Also, it is shown that the oral tradition of the Qur’ān was not strong enough to prevent alternative interpretive text-forms and was often dependent on reforms to the written text.

In early quranic Manuscripts the name of the prophet ʾIbrā hı ̄m occurs in two different spellings either ‫ﺍ‬ ‫ﺑ‬ ‫ﺮ‬ ‫ﻫ‬ ‫ﻢ‬ or ‫ﺍ‬ ‫ﺑ‬ ‫ﺮ‬ ‫ﻫ‬ ‫ﻴ‬ ‫ﻢ‬. These two spellings are spread haphazardly throughout the Quran. Close examination of the patterns in the manuscript, however, show that the distribution of this spelling is not random or up to the whims of the scribe. The location where one spelling or the other occurs is highly correlated across the early manuscripts. Moreover, the location of one spelling or the other is highly correlated to where the quranic reader Hišā m reads the name as ʾIbrā hā m or ʾIbrā hı ̄m. This paper argues that this is not because these manuscripts have been written in the reading of Hišā m, but rather that Hišā m based his reading on the rasm of the quranic text.

This paper takes a novel approach to the question of when and how the text of the Quran was codified into its present form, usually referred to as the Uthmanic text type. In the Quran the phrase niʿmat allāh/rabbi-ka "the grace of god/your lord" can spell niʿmat "grace" either with tāʾ or tāʾ marbūṭah. By examining 14 early Quranic manuscripts, it is shown that this phrase is consistently spelled using only one of the two spellings in the same position in all of these different manuscripts. It is argued that such consistency can only be explained by assuming that all these manuscripts come from a single written archetype, meaning there must have been a codification project sometime in the first century. The results also imply that these manuscripts, and by extension, Quran manuscripts in general, were copied from written exemplars since the earliest days.

This article (re-)considers a unique Qurʾān manuscript in ciphered characters (Ar. al-taʿmiya), reminiscent of the ring letters of the Graeco- Egyptian tradition (Brillenbuchstaben). The case of this Qurʾān manuscript offers an opportunity to decode (Ar. istikhrāj al-muʿammà) a cryptographed text, to date and localize a very special Quranic codex, and to investigate the history of the collections it passed through, as well as the religious and cultural context of its production. Lastly, it examines the relations between Islam and magic—with which cryptography is often associated.

Recently identified on the antiquities market, the Copto-Qurʾānic Palimpsest represents an important artifact for the history of the transmission of the Qurʾān. Because its biblical lower (i.e., erased) text is in Coptic, the qurʾānic upper text is likely to have been written in Egypt. Hence, it provides us with our first piece of evidence for localizing early qurʾānic manuscript production. Going beyond the problem of dating and provenance, the present study aims to place the Copto-Qurʾānic Palimpsest in its context of production and to provide a snapshot of the scribal practices of the Qurʾān in the early Islamic centuries.

Modern historians assert that the earliest manuscripts of the Qurʾān were written in an Arabic scriptio defectiva, devoid of orthographic aids such as consonantal diacritics and vowel markers. In fact, the earliest extant manuscripts—those in the Ḥijāzī script, dated to the first/seventh century—do exhibit consonantal diacritics, though only sporadically and insufficiently to create a completely unambiguous text. Previous studies have provided inconclusive results regarding the uses of these spare diacritics and have suggested that scribes may have purposefully excluded them from Qurʾān manuscripts in order to allow different readings of the text to coexist in the same text. Focusing on the few diacritics that do appear in early manuscripts, this paper situates early Qurʾān manuscripts within the context of other Arabic documents of the first/seventh century that exhibit similarly infrequent diacritics. Shared patterns in the usages of diacritics indicate that early Qurʾān manuscripts were produced by scribes relying upon very similar orthographic traditions to those that produced Arabic papyri and inscriptions of the first/seventh century.

أعلنت المكتبة الإمبراطورية العامة، في تقريرها المطبوع لعام 1864 (سانت بطرسبرغ، 1865- ص 22-24)، عن تحصلها على "مجموعة من المخطوطات القرآنية بالخط الكوفي خطت على الرق بعد شراءها من السيدة ديسنويير (Desnoyer) وريثة المستعرب مارسيل الذي كان من بين أعضاء البعثة الفرنسية لحملة بونابارت".
ذهب جان جوزيف مارسيل (1776-1854) إلى مصر بصحبة قوات نابليون العسكرية عقب تكليفه بإدارة المطابع، ومكث في كل من الإسكندرية والقاهرة في الفترة من عام 1798 إلى 1801. إلى جانب تنفيذ واجبه المباشر في نشر الصحف للجيش الفرنسي والمنشورات للمصريين، كان يعمل أيضًا على اتقان اللغة العربية وجمع الآثار. فيما بعد أصبح مارسيل رئيس المطبعة الجمهورية عقب عودته إلى باريس. وبعد مضي ذلك بإثني عشر عامًا، وبعد سقوط نابليون، تم تسريحه من الخدمة العامة وبدأ في نشر أعماله وأبحاثه الخاصة.

نظَّم مركز دراسة المخطوطات الإسلامية بمؤسسة الفرقان للتراث الإسلامي مؤتمراً دولياً بعنوان (القرآن الكريم من التنزيل إلى التدوين) يومي 25 و26 نوفمبر 2017 بالعاصمة إسطنبول، بحضور حفنة من الباحثين في الدراسات القرآنية والكوديكولوجيا العربية. ويأتي هذا المؤتمر – في دورته الثامنة – على خلفية إعلان جامعة برمنجهام في 22 يوليو 2015 عن نتيجة الفحص الكربوني المشع لواحدة من مخطوطاتها القرآنية القديمة (تُعرف إعلامياً باسم «مصحف برمنجهام»)، حيث أرجعها الفحص إلى الفترة 568-645م بنسبة دقة 95.4%؛ أي إلى القرن الأول الهجري لا الثاني أو الثالث كما كان يُعتقد سابقاً. وقد أثار هذا الخبر موجة عارمة من ردود الأفعال المتباينة إلى وقت قريب، لاسيما وأن هناك من استخدم نتائج الفحص خطأ للقول بأن القرآن الكريم سابق للنبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، فرأت مؤسسة الفرقان أن تعقد مؤتمراً يتناول موضوع المصاحف المخطوطة من حيث التعريف بها وبيان أهميتها، وضروره فهرستها ورقمنتها وإتاحتها للباحثين، ومتابعة المشاريع الغربية المهتمة بنشرها كمشروع كوربوس كورانيكوم الألماني، وغيرها من القضايا المتقاطعة والدراسات القرآنية.

تناولت هذه الدراسة محاولة الشيخ محمد مصطفى الأعظمي للبرهنة على التزام المصاحف بالرسم العثماني عبر العصور المختلفة من خلال معالجته للمخطوطات القرآنية، وحاولت هذه الدراسةُ الإجابةَ عن عدة تساؤلات أهمها: من محمد مصطفى الأعظمي؟ وما مساهمته في مجال الدراسات القرآنية؟ وما المنهج الذي اتبعه في دراسة المخطوطات القرآنية؟ وما عناصر القوة والضعف فيها؟ وللإجابة عن هذه التساؤلات قام الباحث باتباع المنهج الاستقرائي لجمع المعلومات حول حياة الشيخ الأعظمي ومساهمته العلمية، كما استخدم المنهج الوصفي التحليلي لتحليل معالجة الشيخ الأعظمي للمخطوطات القرآنية، ولتحليل دراسات معاصرة للمخطوطات القرآنية.
واشتملت الدراسة على مقدمة، وثلاثة فصول، وخاتمة. الفصل الأول عن الدراسات المعاصرة للمخطوطات القرآنية، والفصل الثاني قدّم نبذة تعريفية عن شخصية الشيخ الأعظمي ومساهمته في الدراسات القرآنية، والفصل الثالث أبرز المنهج الذي اتبعه الشيخ الأعظمي لمعالجة المخطوطات القرآنية ومناقشتها، وأما الخاتمة فشملت النتائج التي توصّل إليها الباحث والمقترحات التي قدّمها من خلال هذه الدراسة.
ومن نتائج هذه الدراسة أن معالجة الشيخ الأعظمي للمخطوطات القرآنية تتميز بمنهج لم يسبق إليه من حيث مقارنة الكلمات في سورة الإسراء بين المصاحف المتعددة، وتقديم الإحصائيات الدقيقة، ومع ذلك تتشابه دراسته مع الدراسات الأخرى في هذا المجال من عدة جوانب، وتختلف عنها في جوانب أخرى، ولكنها لم تسلم من العيوب، ولم تكن كافية للبرهنة على التزام المصاحف المخطوطة بالرسم العثماني عبر العصور المختلفة، فيُقترح أن تقوم دراسات مماثلة لبقية السور في القرآن باستخدام المصاحف المخطوطة من القرن الأول الهجري إلى القرن الثالث عشر الهجري.

Al-Zanjānī’s Qur’ān, Iranian Masterpiece in Kufic script from 531/1137: MS 44 in Al-Khizānat al-Gharawiyya (Imām Alī’s Shrine) in Najaf, and its Isolated Leaves in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Qur’ānic codex, MS 44 in Al-Khizānat al-Gharawiyya (Imām Alī’s Shrine) in Najaf, copied by Muḥammad al-Zanjānī in 531/1137, is one of the masterpieces of Qur’ān inscription in the Kufic script. Missing are eight illuminated leaves from the beginning and end of the manuscript, including the colophon. Those leaves were probably taken out of the library in the 1990s during the rule of Saddam Hussein, and have been kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1996.
Some key features of the manuscript are: transcribing in a kind of the Kūfic script which may be called kūfi-naskhī (New Style of Eastern Kūfic), ending each 27-lines page with the conclusion of a verse, covering each of the 30 parts (juz’) of the Qur’ānic text in seven leaves, beginning every part at the beginning of the page and ending it at the bottom of the page, the closeness of the reading to that of Abū ʿAmr al-Baṣrī, its departure from the seven well-known systems of numbering the verses, the naming of some sūras in ways different from the common nomenclature, the use of ordinary standard Arabic orthography, and avoidance of the Uthmānic pattern.
The artistic features of this manuscript include: very sophisticated and geometrical illuminations, the use of golden ink in transcribing of certain Qur’ānic terms and phrases, beautiful geometric and bold embellishments and elaborate Islamic motifs at the head of each sūra, verse-ending signs in the form of golden octagons, use of decorated almond-shaped motifs for signs used to mark clusters of five and ten verses, markers of each of the seven subsections of the Qur’ān (sub‘) and of their half-parts (niṣf sub‘), markers of the places for prostration (sajda), markers of the beginnings of each juz’, and the use of the star of David along with the eight-pointed stars, both of which are common elements in old Islamic decoration. At the end of the codex, the scribe has described in both Persian and Arabic his 33 rules in transcribing this Qur’an.
The features of calligraphy and artistic illumination of the manuscript show that the scribe-illuminator was master of style, original and imaginative person with a mathematical and geometric bent of mind. He carried out his work with precise mathematical calculations, and used in the illuminations almost all elements of geometric and floral decorations. At the end of the article, mention is made of a number of other Qur’ān codices similar in respect of Kufic script and systematic muṣḥaf writing, all of which end their pages with verse endings and cover each part (juz’) of the Qur’ān in a specific number of leaves.

مصحف محمد الزنجاني، الفن الإیراني بالخط الكوفي من سنة 531 هـ: المخطوط برقم 44 في مكتبة العتبة العلوية في النجف الاشرف، مع بعض أوراقها الموجودة في متحف المتروبوليتان للفنون

خلاصة: تتناول هذه المقالة دراسة للمخطوطة القرآنية رقم 44 في «الخزانة الغروية»/ مكتبة الروضة الحیدرية في العتبة العلوية المقدسة في النجف الاشرف، بخط محمد الزنجاني يرجع تاريخها إلى سنة 531هـ ، واحدة من روائع المخطوطات القرانية بالخط الكوفي وبجودة عالية في التنظيم؛ حيث يحتفظ متحف المتروبوليتان بالأوراق الثماني المنفصلة منها والتي تحتوي على خاتمة المخطوطة، رقم الكاتب وبعض أوراقها المذهبة. ويحتمل أن تكون الأوراق المذكورة انتزعت من المخطوطة الأصلية في تسعينيات القرن الماضي أيام نظام صدام حسین، ووصلت في عام 1996 م إلى متحف المتروبوليتان للفنون في نيويورك بالولايات المتحدة.
فمن جملة خصائص هذه المخطوطة المهمة: أنّها کتبت بالخط النسخ الكوفي (الكوفي بالأسلوب الجدید أو الكوفي الشرقي)؛ تنتهي كل صفحة منها بنهاية الآية ولا تتعداها إلى صفحة أخرى؛ تمّ كتابة كلّ جزء من القرآن في سبعة أوراق فقط؛ يبدأ الجزء من أول الصفحة وينتهي في أسفل الصفحة بعد سبعة أوراق؛ القراءة التي استند اليها الكاتب في النسخة قریبة من قراءة أبي عمرو البصري؛ والمخطوط لا يتطابق مع الأنظمة السبعة لعّد الآیات؛ وقد سمّيت فيها بعض السور باسماء غير اسمائها المتداولة، وإنّ الرسم أو هجاء المصحف في هذا المخطوط القرآني قياسي، فلايتطابق مع الرسم العثماني.
من الخصوصيات الفنية للمخطوطة يمكننا الإشارة إلى التذهيب الهندسي والمعقد للغایة، استخدام القلم الذهبي في كتابة بعض العبارات والكلمات القرآنية الخاصة، والافتتاحيات الرائعة الجمال للسور بزخارف هندسية مع الطرة وتصامیم الأرابسک المتشابكة. وقد تمّ رسم علامات الآيات بشكل دائرة مثمنة الاضلاع، ورسمت دلالات التعشير والتخميس على شكل طرة (شمسة) ونقوش لوزية، ورسم علامات للأسباع ونصف السُبع، وعلامة مخصوصة للسجدة. وأما بداية کل جزء من الأجزاء الثلاثین فقد رسمت فیها نجمات مختلفة الأضلاع کنجمة مثمنة وأخرى سداسية والتي تعرف بنجمة داود، وهما من الأشكال الهندسية الرائجة في التذهيب الاسلامي. أورد كاتب المخطوطة (محمد الزنجاني) في نهاية مصحفه قواعده في تدوين هذا المصحف الفني، في 33 بندا بالفارسية والعربية.
إن خصوصيات الخط والتذهيب الفني والفريد من نوعه للمخطوطة تشير إلى أنّ الكاتب المذهِّب كان استاذاً ماهراً، صاحب أسلوب ومبدعاً ومبتكراً، وكان يتمتع بذهن رياضي ومعماري، حيث خطّ المصحف بشكل بالغ الدقة من خلال اعتماد الحسابات الرياضية، واستخدم العناصر الهندسية وسيقان الأزهار والأشجار في كافة تزويقاته الذهبية. وورد الإشارة في الختام إلى بعض مصاحف مشابهة بالخط الكوفي، مضبوطة النسق وقواعد الكتابة؛ حيث یختتم صفحاتها بانتهاء الآيات، ولكل جزء من المصحف عدد محدد من الصفحات لا يتجاوزه.

This article reconsiders the origin, both geographical and cultural, of the Blue Koran and suggests a date and place for its production. Through a codicological comparison with a Western manuscript, it seems possible to establish a link between this Latin precedent and the Blue Koran. A further comparison with a blue manuscript, on paper, provides a parallel for the use of a dyed/coloured writing material. Such practice, well attested to in Greek and Latin manuscript production, can be found in various cultural spheres.

This paper studies a set of Qur’an fragments in Kufic, at the end of which
some colophons attributed to the script of one of the Shi’ite Imams have
been added. The author first introduces ten manuscripts, their physical
features and the contents of these Qur’anic manuscripts along with their
pictures. Then, analyzing of the colophons of the manuscripts, the author shows that the colophons attributed to Imams have been added later than the original time of the manuscripts. All of these colophons come with sentences signifying the visiting and sealing of manuscripts by the Safavid king, Šāh Ismāʻīl (rule 1487-1524 A.D.). The author shows that this is also a kind of forging occurred later than the Šāh Ismāʻīl era in order to increase the financial and spiritual value of manuscripts.
