Since the beginning of Christianity, the recruitment of the episcopal body has given rise to many taboos and has many obstacles; the restrictions are both religious and civil and the legislation of the laity complements the minimum expected by the bishops. The choice of the candidate is difficult to define because it is not always easy to link to the canonical theory a practical reality. Several factors are taken into account in the choice of the candidate: beyond the legal obligations, one expects of the moral virtues whose normative sources do not say anything. After studying the African texts addressing the issue of episcopal election, we will attempt to respect the theoretical scheme of the acts of recruitment to the episcopate: the choice of the candidate, his appointment and his consecration. In particular, one has to wonder about his previous career, which does not necessarily follow the ecclesiastical or monastic path. The study of the motivations of the candidates is impossible because they can not be evaluated by sources which limit them to a divine revelation.

A community of sisters was erected as a Public Association of the Faithful over 20 years ago. The Bishop of the diocese now wants to erect them as a diocesan institute. This opinion explores the theological and canonical issues.

Based on the statistics from CARA, there are numerous canonical issues facing institutes and societies in the USA. Similar issues are facing those who live in other countries. This PowerPoint presentation explores those issues by giving an overview of consecrated life and presenting the statistics for women and men religious. Then it looks at the way to address the situation in a wholistic manner. The PowerPoint is an outline of the presentation given at the Midwest Canon Law Society Conference that was held from Aug. 31 - Sept. 1, 2021. The conference was sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The original Vita of Adalhard, abbot of Corbie (d. 826), written by Paschasius Radbertus (BHL 58) was rewritten at Corbie in the eleventh century. This article will examine three questions concerning this Vita Adalhardi Secunda (BHL 60): its author, the date of its composition, and the context in which it was written. We conclude that the Vita Secunda was ordered but not written by Géraud [de la Sauve-Majeure], at that time custos of the abbey. Several signs point to its composition after1058, and most likely in the early 1060s when the abbey had a serious conflict with the bishop of Amiens. From the 1020s on, Adalhard’s life has been reworked to emphasize his role as a peace-maker, as a guarantor of the monastic patrimony, and as the defender of the rights of the abbey of Corbie against the bishop of Amiens. This portrait of the saint well served the purposes of the monks of Corbie in the 1060s.
