Relitti

The wreck of the Italian Regia Marina submarine Scirè lies at a depth of 33 meters in Haifa Bay. The Scirè was sunk on 10 August 1942, at a time when Haifa was a harbor of the British Empire. She belonged to the Italian Navy Special Forces unit called X MAS (Decima MAS). This unit was the fiercest enemy of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and the Scirè was its spearhead. Using innovative underwater warfare in covert operations, the actions of the X MAS, particularly those of the Scirè in Gibraltar and Alexandria, made British harbors unsafe, at least until mid-1943.
This dissertation seeks to examine the main historical questions that still remain unsolved with respect to the final mission and sinking of the Scirè. These questions deal with the purpose and specific objectives of the Scirè in attacking Haifa; the way they fit the general strategy of the Regia Marina in the Mediterranean theater of naval war; her exact plans for the attack and her errors during the approach to the port; how the British discovered her mission and how the battle really took place. More generally, this dissertation will examine the story of the Italian Navy in World War II, and those of X MAS and of the Scirè before the S.L.1 mission against the harbor of Haifa.
The material aspects of the Scirè wreck have been surveyed, studied and documented by divers to obtain information and finds that assisted in reconstructing the primary cause of her sinking. This innovative project is a result of combining archival research with extensive underwater survey of a unique wreck of a World War II submarine, both for the methods and for the subject, since studies of contemporary steel shipwrecks are very recent and rare, especially in the Mediterranean Sea.
Altogether, by combining underwater research and archival studies within a multidisciplinary research context, a wider and more complete picture of this fascinating story has been obtained. This multidisciplinary method has provided an outstanding opportunity to verify the existing data, add more accurate details and significantly enlighten the importance historical military/naval event.
Finally, the study highlighted the importance of the Scirè wreck as a historical monument and the need to protect and manage it, encouraging bilateral agreements between Italy and Israel that meet this need.

The paper focuses on the central position, in the Mediterranean basin, of Sicily crossroads since antiquity of the most important commercial routes between East and West. This is proved by the significant data taken from the underwater archaeology in the study of marble commerce and of the wide use of marble in the Roman Empire and its provinces.
These data are also strengthened by the study of the places where a wide number of wrecks with marble works inside have been discovered along the Sicilian coasts. These wrecks date back to the Imperial age except Marzamemi ii, a ship of Justinian age.

Despite the outcry about some recent events (Costa Concordia, Sea
Diamond) the cruise industry does not show problems of environmental
sustainability more serious than other sector of shipping; on the other hand,
cruise activity is more environmentally sustainable than most forms of tourism.
It does not seem necessary to invoke for cruising a special legislation in the
field of environmental protection and safety. It has to be appreciated the
growing sensitivity to the environmental profiles of ship-owners and users of
the cruise industry.

Nonostante il clamore suscitato da alcune recenti vicende (Costa
Concordia, Sea Diamond) l’industria crocieristica non presenta problemi di
sostenibilità ambientale più gravi rispetto ad altre forme di navigazione; d’altra
parte l’attività crocieristica è più compatibile per l’ambiente di quanto non lo
siano molte altre forme di turismo. Non sembra necessario immaginare una
disciplina ambientale e di sicurezza diversa da quella che si applica alla
navigazione in generale. Si apprezza la crescente sensibilità verso i profili
ambientali del mondo armatoriale e degli utenti del settore crocieristico.

Il vino ha sempre rappresentato per le civiltà del passato, un bene di prima necessità. Prodotto in gran parte del mondo conosciuto, il vino fu considerato merce preziosa di scambio, merce tanto preziosa da incentivare la pirateria nel Mediterraneo ed infine un ottimo accompagnamento durante importanti riunioni dell'alta nobiltà antica e non solo.
Il libro ripercorre le tappe della produzione e del commercio del vino, seguendo la filiera produttiva che dalla coltivazione giungeva al consumo, seguendo la concezione moderna "dal produttore al consumatore".
Ruolo fondamentale occupato nella filiera, era quello del trasporto di questo bene all'interno dei grandi contenitori, i dolia. 
Numerosi relitti furono e sono continuamente individuati sui fondali del nostro mare, nel testo vengono trattati quelli che ci hanno restituito maggiori informazioni sul traffico commerciale tra I secolo a.C. e I secolo d.C.

Osservazioni sui reperti inediti rinvenuti in occasione del riordino dei magazzini del Museo Civico di Cecina provenienti da relitti collocati lungo a costa toscana tra il Cecina e il Fine, collocabili
cronologicamente tra età tardo-repubblicana ed età moderna e appartenenti a

The Nairobi Convention of 18 May 2007 on the removal of wreckage, known by the acronym «WRC 2007» (from the English «Wreck Removal Convention»), entered into force on 14 April 2015.
It sets the legal framework for the removal of potentially dangerous wrecks. It applies ex se only to the exclusive economic zone.
It provides for compulsory insurance. The insurance certificate can only be issued by the Member States (and this could be a good reason for ratifying it, even by States who have not proclaimed EEZ, like Italy)

The cargo of marble blocks off Capo Bianco was dated to the Roman period. New sampling and analysis has identified Carrara marble, and also Rosso di Francia (Rouge Languedoc) and Portargento, which strongly suggests a post-medieval date. This leads to the suggestion
that nearby finds dating between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th may come from the same ship, perhaps sailing from France and Liguria to deliver stone in southern Italy. This is rare evidence of the post-medieval marble trade and demonstrates the importance of archaeometric analysis for the interpretation of wrecked cargos.

Le missioni e i successi dell’eroico sommergibile della Decima MAS sono diventate quasi leggenda, la storia travagliata del suo relitto è molto meno conosciuta. Eppure il relitto, sottoposto nel tempo a molteplici violazioni, oltre ad essere tuttora il luogo dove riposano i resti di sedici suoi uomini, è il luogo materiale che conserva il retaggio storico di quelle imprese.

The coastal area under investigation is located on the Ionian side of the Calabrian peninsula, in the southern part of the Gulf of Taranto. It was analyzed the segment of coast between the Trionto and Nicà rivers (the ancient rivers Traes and Hylias), by means of the aerial photography, historical cartography, portolans, ancient literary sources and archival documents, for the purpose of identifying the minor seaports along the cabotage route, abundantly attested by both Greek and Latin authors and characterized by the presence of numerous underwater archaeological finds that mark its wake for over a millennium, followed by the ancient ships in the Sinus Tarentinus.

Expedition to positive identify the shipwreck of the Italian Regia Marina troop carrier Re Umberto, sunk 4th November 1915 by the German minelayer submarine  UC 14 off the harbour of Valona (Albania). The expedition received the appointment and patronage of the Archaeology Institute of the Culture Ministry of the Republic of Albania .

La IANTD è stata la prima agenzia didattica a pensare, studiare e offrire corsi per immersione nei relitti (wreck diving) ed è all'avanguardia a livello mondiale in questo campo, grazie alla sua esperienza pluridecennale e ai suoi istruttori professionalmente molto preparati.
La IANTD ha sviluppato un’intera gamma di programmi d’istruzione e addestramento per l’immersione nei relitti, dei quali questo è il primo importante passo. Chi desideri po proseguire nell'addestramento potrà frequentare i corsi di Advanced Wreck Diver e Technical Wreck Diver che porteranno a una padronanza completa anche nella penetrazione avanzata nei relitti.
Questo corso, è molto importante per iniziare a sviluppare la corretta attitudine dell’immersione sui relitti, a comprendere gli insiti pericoli di quest’ambiente affascinante e a imparare come gestirli, soprattutto padroneggiando la gestione delle emergenze.
Questo tipo d’immersioni potrà diventerà una vera passione, che fin dall'inizio darà delle emozioni indimenticabili, poi si trasformerà sempre di più in un desiderio di esplorazione e conoscenza della storia della nave e del relitto.
Anche in questo campo la IANTD è stata pioniere e leader, svolgendo spedizioni a carattere esplorativo, storico e archeologico sui più importanti relitti e a organizzare i corsi IANTD Expedition Member per coloro che in futuro vorranno partecipare o organizzare spedizioni.
Questo manuale è il frutto di grande conoscenza ed esperienza in questo campo e potrà essere la base della abilità futura in questo affascinante campo dell’immersione subacquea.

Dal 5 al 15 luglio 2003 si è svolta la prima spedizione archeologica della IANTD sul relitto della corazzata Austro-Ungarica Szent Istvàn con il compito di misurare le falle ed i danni nell’affondamento, nonché effettuare un adeguato rilevamento della giacitura del relitto. Come è noto la corazzata dell’Imperial Regia marina Austro- Ungarica Szent Istvàn, fu affondata dai MAS del Comandante Rizzo il 10 giugno 1918 di fronte all’isola di Premuda. L’importante relitto è sottoposto all’attenta tutela del Governo Croato e la spedizione si è svolta il patrocinio del Restauroski Zavod Ministartvo Kulture Republika Hrvtska.
