Il saggio si rivolge a chiunque voglia esplorare un campo di ricerca affascinante e tuttora poco noto in Italia: la (s)cortesia storica. Preceduto da un’introduzione teorica, in cui si presentano le innovazioni più recenti nei campi della pragmatica storica e della pragmatica della (s)cortesia, lo studio si impernia su una trasformazione chiave, vale a dire la progressiva erosione del cerimoniale di antico regime e la nascita della cortesia contemporanea nell'Ottocento, che viene esaminata sia dall'ottica prescrittiva dei trattati comportamentali, sia attraverso rappresentazioni fittizie della prassi (s)cortese storica. Si seguono le tracce di questa trasformazione in tre generi letterari “orali” – il dialogo teorico, il teatro e il romanzo – di autori (Castiglione, Bibbiena, Ariosto, Goldoni, Manzoni e Collodi) che usano gli scambi dialogici fittizi o per contestare le norme vigenti o per promuoverne delle alternative.

The paper revisits Frances Yates' theory about the architectural plan of Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Although the proposition was strongly rejected by a number of authorities on the Elizabethan theatre, I think Yates's belief about a rising cult of Vitruvius in Renaissance England was a good starting point. I continue this train of thought by looking at original texts and recent scholarly literature. Between playful distancing and ontological vertigo, Italian metatheatre has, from the Baroque to the present day, engaged in a reflection on illusion that this collected volume explores in honour of Françoise Decroisette.

In drama and theatre studies, improvisation has remained an undiscovered topic due to the fact that extempore acting cannot be documented in a sufficient way. In early modern theatre, however, it was probably an inherent part of the players’ work, and for this reason, it left its mark on contemporary plays.
The aim of my essay is to analyse allusions to extempore acting in Shakespeare’s dramas. My argument is that improvising characters/players in Renaissance theatre embodied creativity, intuition, independence and freedom; and that is why they were often hindered by other characters. Moreover, extempore attitude and manners were continuously criticised in the anti-theatrical literature of the age, thus, those actors/characters who applied it were the constant targets of the enemies of theatre.
By reading some of Shakespeare’s plays and discussing their cultural-theatrical background, I intend to show that improvising characters – to the enjoyment and the edification of the audience – subvert the rules of social and theatrical behaviour in order to represent independence.

Ephemeral architectures, monuments and cities 'dressed up' as ancient ones, fashionable styles and accessories inspired by an idea of classic that is often quite imaginative, but still lively and colourful.
The first scenario of the rebirth of passion for the ancient, as early as the end of the fourteenth century, are the ceremonies and feasts of the liturgical and secular calendar: a vital and original reinvention, hybridized with medieval chivalric heritages. It is precisely in that frame, as an unavoidable chapter of the new genre of civil ritual of the feast, the theater is also reborn. A theater that reinvents ex novo texts, spaces and dramaturgy, but which often wants to be programmatically linked to a revival of ancient theater.
In this panorama the case of Venice, but also the relations with the other centers of the Renaissance.

Horses always had a leading role in public events during the Renaissance. The Roman Carnival was no exception. The example of the first Carnival under Pope Paul III, in 1536.

Lo studio di Carlo Fanelli si propone come excursus ampio e documentato sulla cultura teatrale del Cinquecento italiano, per poi soffermarsi in modo particolare sulla figura di Bernardo Dovizi da Bibbiena, segretario di Giovanni de’ Medici, cardinale, legato pontificio nonché autore della commedia classicheggiante a contenuto erotico La Calandria. Partendo, quindi, da un esame dell’uomo del Rinascimento e del ruolo che la corte, in quel periodo, detiene come polo di attrazione culturale, nonché come scenario ideale per la rappresentazione delle commedie, Fanelli analizza criticamente La Calandria del Bibbiena, che, «con i suoi intrecci scenici ben determinati e studiati», rispecchia in pieno i canoni artistici e culturali del Cinquecento. Se ne scoprono, quindi, i sottofondi simbolici e, soprattutto, i modelli, che vanno dalla commedia antica il teatro di Plauto e di Terenzio ebbe un ruolo fondamentale nel Rinascimento - fino al Decameron del Boccaccio, i cui personaggi, specie il famoso Calandrino, offrono non pochi spunti per la caratterizzazione dei personaggi de La Calandria.

This article offers an interpretation of a drawing held in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, showing an incomplete
proscenium arch of a stage with the crest of the Barberini family. Since the drawing is by the artist Francesco Romanelli, who
was one of the artists chosen by the Barberini to design works of art that could be a good means of conveying their political
propaganda, it is likely that this arch had some hidden political meaning. In the payment records of the operas sponsored
by the Barberini, Romanelli’s name appears only in the payment records for the opera San Bonifacio staged at Palazzo della
Cancelleria in Rome for the Carnival season 1638. Therefore, this article aims at revealing the hidden political meaning of this
proscenium arch through an original interpretation of the images shown. It also offers a possible reconstruction of the entire
arch made according to the analysis of the historical events related to the Barberini family at the time of the performance and
the iconography usually chosen by them to convey their political messages.

Il presente articolo intende indagare il legame tra la retorica e la commedia rinascimentale nella misura in cui la retorica stessa funge da dispositivo linguistico atto a sostenere la mimesi del reale e la natura umana. In quanto elemento costitutivo delle tecniche della persuasione, l’utilizzo della retorica è finalizzato alla volontà di apprendimento. In tal senso, quindi, il teatro, e nello specifico la commedia, si pone come strumento di indagine della natura umana, la cui rappresentazione fatta oggetto dalla finzione è percepita dallo spettatore come realtà da conoscere. Ciò è decisivo nella commedia rinascimentale in quanto genere governato dal principio mimetico e dalle altre costruzioni retoriche invalse nella pratica della cortigianeria. Tale formulazione ha come riferimento normativo le dottrine di Aristotele Cicerone e Quintiliano e la commedia latina.

Con questo contributo si intende fornire nuova luce sulla cerchia di studiosi rinascimentali del Meridione la cui attività precede e, per un certo verso, anticipa per spunti e definizioni, il pensiero di Bernardino Telesio. Si tratta di personalità come Parrasio, i fratelli Martirano, Antonio Telesio, (zio e precettore di Bernardino), Sertorio Quattromani, nella cui attività alla filosofia hanno associato la filologia, il teatro e la lirica. La fervida attività intellettuale, che vede questi studiosi impegnati tra la Calabria e l’Europa, sarà ricostruita attraverso nuove acquisizioni di documenti e aggiornamenti bibliografici.

Oggetto d'indagine di questo volume sono i rapporti tra la drammaturgia del primo Cinquecento e manierista e la retorica classica. Ciò che viene posto in analisi è, infatti, l'apporto normativo fornito dalle regole dell'eloquenza di Cicerone e Quintiliano e dagli aspetti precettistici della poetica e della retorica aristotelica alla drammaturgia e alla messinscena nel teatro rinascimentale. Inserita all'interno del "dispositivo" socio-culturale e antropologico cortigiano, la retorica si impone come nucleo regoli- stico per il teatro, ma anche per la codificazione delle buone maniere. Installata nella logica autoriflessiva del teatro di corte della prima metà del Cinquecento, la retorica, quale strumento prescrittivo ed eticizzante, viene messa in crisi da esperienze "eversive" come quelle di Pietro Aretino e Ruzante e poi superata, in età manieristica, da autori come Giordano Bruno la cui concezione teatrale è suggestionata dalle teorie fi-losofiche e scientifiche coeve. Infine, la retorica viene riconvocata in sede tragica da drammaturghi come Trissino, Giraldi Cintio e Sperone Speroni e riacquista fondamento normativo ed etico nella pedagogia e nell'esperienza teatrale dei Gesuiti.
