Robert College

Türkiye’mizde 15 Temmuz darbe teşebbüsünü müteakip cemaat yapılanmaları üzerine pek çok şey söylendi, yazıldı ve çizildi. Okyanus ötesinden ülkemize yapılan bu müdahale ilk değildi. Osmanlılar zamanında da okyanus ötesinden pek çok müdahaleler yapılmıştı.
Bu makalemizde ülkemize okyanus ötesinden yapılan belki de ilk müdahale olan misyonerlik faaliyetleri merkezinde; Zimmi Hukuku, gayrimüslim cemaatler, Amerikan misyonerleri, Amerikan Board teşkilatı, Robert Kolej’in kurulması ve kurucusu Cyrus Hamlin’in hayatı, kolejin kuruluş gayesi ve eğitim sistemi, Robert kolejlilerin Bulgar isyanlarında vazifeler alması ve Bulgarlar için yaptıkları sair faaliyetler hakkında araştırmalar yaptık.

Özet: Hıristiyanlıkta misyonerlik faaliyetleri her zaman var olmuşsa da, bunun Hıristiyan olmayan toplumlar için bir problem durumuna gelmesi 19. yüzyılın başlarına rastlar. Çünkü bu tarihlerde misyonerlik faaliyetleri örgütlenmeye başlamıştır. Bu örgütlenmede de en önemli rolü eğitim faaliyetleri almıştır. Dolayısıyla Doğu'daki azınlık okullarına yönelik ilgi artmış, Osmanlı Devleti içerisindeki azınlık okulları da bu ilginin odağında yer almıştır. Sınırları içerisinde her zaman azınlıklara ait okullar bulunan Osmanlı Devleti için bu okulların bir sorun haline gelmesi de söz konusu ilgiyle başlamıştır. Azınlık okulları, hem 19. yüzyılın başlarından itibaren hızla artmaya başlamış, Tanzîmât, Islahât ve Adâlet Fermânları ile birlikte kontrolden çıkmış hem de misyonerlik faaliyetleri sebebi ile devletin bu okullar üzerinde hakimiyet sağlaması zorlaşmıştır. Devleti zorlayan bu okullardan en meşhuru Amerikalılar tarafından kurulan Robert Kolej'dir. Robert Kolej üzerine yapılan çok sayıda araştırma mevcuttur. Bu araştırmaların büyük kısmı çok ciddî ve nitelikli eserlerdir. Ancak hiçbirinde seyahatnameler değerlendirilmemiştir. Bu araştırmada Amerikalı seyyah, diplomat ve misyonerlere ait sekiz seyahatname nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman inceleme ile ele alınmış, literatürdeki bu ufak boşluğun doldurulması hedeflenmiştir.

Abstract Missionary activities have always existed in Christianity, however, the fact that this situation becoming a problem for non-Christian societies coincides with the beginning of the 19th century. It is because the missionary activities have begun to organize on these dates. The most important role in this organization was undertaken by educational activities. Thus, the interest in the minority schools in the orient increased. Minority schools in the Ottoman Empire were in the center of this interest. These schools' becoming a problem for the Ottoman State, which always had schools belonging to minorities within its borders, also started with this interest. Not only did the minority schools get out of control by growing rapidly with the Tanzîmât, and Edicts of Reform and Justice since the early 19th century but also it became difficult for the state to dominate these schools due to the missionary activities. The most famous of these schools that were challenging for the state was Robert College, founded by Americans. There are a lot of studies made about Robert College. The majority of these studies are very significant and qualified works. However, the travel writings were not used in any of them. In this study, it is aimed to fill this small gap in the literature by addressing eight travel writings belonging to American travelers, diplomats, and missionaries by document reviewing which is a qualitative research method.

This study focuses on the national identity of Robert College (Istanbul) alumni from the date of the school's foundation until 1938. School records were used as the primary source of the study. The general picture shows that this American institution changed from a school of Christians to a mainly Turkish one towards 1930s. The study was prepared for the anniversary of 150 years of its establishment.

Dr. Cyrus Hamlin was an American missionary who established the first American College outside the United States: Robert College in Istanbul. Резюме: В първата част на статията е разгледана началната история на две от елитните училища в Цариград през втората половина на XIX в.: американския Робърт колеж и френско-турския Галатасарайски лицей, като акцентът е поставен на ролята на тези две учебни заведения в разпространението на професионалното търговско и счетоводно образование сред българите през периода. Във втората част на статията е направено обобщение по темата за търговското и счетоводното образование в зората на Новото време.

This book focuses on American missionary activities in the Ottoman Empire. After the construction of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission in 1810, American missionaries started to spread the Gospel around the world. The Ottoman Empire was perceived as a strategic place since it occupied Jerusalem. By the time they arrived, American missionaries found a weak central authority. Some of the Ottoman officials considered that Westernization of the public institutions in the Empire could strengthen central authority. In order to protect its integrity, the Ottoman Empire started to grant freedoms to the minorities. After gaining liberties, American Missionaries further strengthened their position in the Empire. This book analyzes the strong image of American missionary schools through Robert College which was established in 1863. Robert College which reflects American ideals, preserves its distinguished place to this day.
