EXAMINATION OF OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS OCCURRED IN SHIPYARDS: A RISK ANALYSIS IN PERSPECTIVE OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
The first aim of occupational safety applications is to provide security of workers and prevent accidents. In this respect, job accidents are focus points of occupational safety process. In order to prevent job accidents effectively, it is required to define and analyze risk factors of these accidents. In this research, it was aimed to compare job accidents occurred in Marmara Region with both national and international similar job accidents, and to analyze risks of our country.
In the research selected shipyard job accidents in 2015 were examined, and evaluations based on regional and office based were performed. Afterwards, job accidents were evaluated according to risk factors and reported.
According to results of the study, accidents at regions did not show statistically significant difference based on age, experience, education and job type (p>0,05). In determining of accident frequency number of accidents, lost workday, total workers, monthly workday, monthly accident frequency and accident weights form a statistically significant model (p<0,05). Research results show that there are important lacks in ship construction industry, and data collection process is insufficient.

The Shipyard industry is one of the growing industry in Malaysia. There is still a lot of room for improvement with regards to the safety aspects within the industry. This study presents the finding of a survey on the safety management in shipyard operation of class C and D in Peninsular Malaysia as registered with Ministry of Finance Malaysia. Shipyard operation is considered a hazardous job. Most of the cases were due to fall from height, fire and explosion. The accidents were due to crane collapsed and explosion during welding works inside a hull of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier. The research aims to study the Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) of shipyard operations in Malaysia particularly in Class C and Class D. Many shipyards today have made technological changes to their production facilities over the past decades. However, the building methodology has remained the same. Implementing a lean manufacturing approach to shipyards requires analysis of the present shipyard facilities. Likewise, the lean compliance level needs to be measured. After this, the steps for lean transformation are determined. In this work, a case study of a shipyard with a traditional panel-block assembly process is transformed to a lean one which follows one piece fl ow. The integration of group technology, a product work breakdown structure (PWBS) and lean manufacturing yields optimal results illustrated through risk analysis. This is best demonstrated through the analysis of man-hours in assembling a typical shipbuilding block ready for erection.

This paper describes some aspects of the application of STEP technology to the development of a data management system for a ship repair yard. The business process associated with ship repair activities implies a lot of data exchange between several companies, with different core businesses and organizations, using different software platforms and systems. In this activity, where the duration of the typical work is relatively small and the schedules are tight, the improvement of the communications between the actors involved is relevant. The system described here manages the information exchanged between ship owner and shipyard during the repair process, covering tendering, contract, production, and invoice phases. STEP technology was used not only for data exchange but also for the development of the persistent storage of data on an object-oriented database, driven by a formal EXPRESS-based schema.

This article explores the clash of various narratives around the Gdańsk shipyard, one of the famous examples of a postindustrial heritage site with a significant political past, located in Poland. The analysis is placed within the larger context of contemporary debates on heritage and the specificity of post-industrial sites, showing how vulnerable and fragile foundations such sites may have, as well as how they are susceptible to various manipulations. This study explores the process of construction of heritage sites and their contradictory narratives by referring to one particular aspect of the Polish past and its institutional representation in the form of post-industrial heritage. First, it refers to the contemporary idea of heritage and briefly explains the relation between heritage and memory. It also describes the role of heritage in the tourism industry emphasizing various expectations and demands that are made for memory sites. Then it analyses the idea and specificity of post-industrial heritage as well as the paradox of its universality. Finally, it refers to the Gdańsk shipyard as an example of post-industrial heritage space which serves various demands and visions that reflect a multiplicity of narratives.

Gemi inşaatı endüstrisi en karmaşık üretim sektörlerinden birisi olarak kabul edilir ve farklı tersane ve operasyon süreçlerinin idare edilmesi için büyük boyutlarda işgücüne ihtiyaç duyar. Tarihin pek çok aşamasında gemiler ahşap gibi doğal malzemelerden üretilmiş ve rüzgar gibi yine doğal güçler ile sevk edilmiştir. Bu yüzden gemi kaynaklı atıklar göz ardı edilebilmiştir. Bununla birlikte, endüstri devriminden sonra çelik, başlıca gemi inşa malzemesi olarak kullanılmaya başlanmıştır ve bunun doğal bir sonucu olarak da yeni üretim yöntemleri geliştirilmiştir. Hem üretim hem de onarım tersanelerinde yaygın olarak kullanılan üç temel ve önemli üretim aşaması bulunur: Raspa, boya ve kaynak. Raspa yöntemi, yüzeye yapışan organizmaları kaldırmak ve yüzeyi bir sonraki aşama olan boya sürecine hazırlamak için daha pürüzlü hale getirmek için yüzeye küçük parçacıklar püskürtülmesi işlemidir. Boya süreci, tersane kaynaklı kirlilikte en büyük paya sahip olan süreçtir. Geleneksel bir boya işleminde katı, sıvı ve gaz türünden atıklar oluşabilmektedir. Kaynak ise gemi inşaatında en çok kullanılan birleştirme yöntemidir. En büyük kirletici kaynağı boya süreci olmasına rağmen en zararlı kirleticiler kaynak işlemi sırasında ortaya çıkmaktadır. Her üç işlemde de benzer ve zararlı atık ve emisyonlar meydana gelebilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, halen operasyonda olan bir yolcu gemisi ve bu yolcu gemisinin onarımı sırasında ortaya çıkan atık ve emisyonlar, yeşil gemi konsepti perspektifinde incelenmiştir. Emisyonların tanımı ve hesaplanması sonrasında, zararlı atıkları minimize etmek için bir atık yönetimi sistemi geliştirilmiştir. A more comprehensive strategy formulation has an important role for sustainable competitive advantage of the shipbuilding companies in the global market. The nature of shipbuilding industry differs from general industry, therefore a strategy formulation model should be developed based on its own characteristics and business environment. This paper presents a proposed strategy formulation model for medium-sized shipyards both in business and corporate levels. A new approach was developed based on comprehensive business environment analysis, using questionnaires to the industry&#39;s stakeholders and multivariate analysis &#39;Factor Analysis.&#39; From the analysis, two business environmental models are made, and combined into corporate model called &#39;Ten-boundary environment model.&#39; These models are used to develop Shipyard Matrix, then integrated into a shipyard strategy formulation model, called &#39;YARDSTRAT,&#39; using the David&#39;s strategy formulation framework. This study vividly presents results from a seasonal particulate matter measurement campaign conducted at world’s largest ship-breaking yard i.e., Alang-Sosiya (Gujarat, India) at six locations and a reference station at Gopnath which is 30 km south of this ship-breaking yard. The collected suspended particulate matter (SPM) 24-h samples were critically analyzed for heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Co, Ni, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn). The average concentration of SPM within the ship-breaking yard during the investigation was 287.5 ± 20.4 μg m−3 and at reference station it was 111.13 ± 5.81 μg m−3. These values are found to be in excess of the permitted national standards. The levels of heavy metals at Alang-Sosiya are very high as compared to US EPA and WHO guidelines. The mean concentrations of all metals are in the order: Fe >>Zn >Cu > Mn > Cd >Pb > Co >Ni >Cr. The results on enrichment factors (EF) suggest that most of the metals in the ship-breaking yard exhibit EF values of near or above 100 which must have been comprehensively affected by ship-breaking activities. Metal data was used to evaluate the role of spatial factors on their distribution characteristics. Thereafter, factor analysis was carried out to identify the main components liable for the variance of the data set.

A work in progress. Sometimes you read a book and it really sets you thinking. After reading Thomas Heinrich's excellent "Warship Builders: An Industrial History of U.S. Naval Shipbuilding, 1922-1940", I wondered how a minor navy organizes its shipbuilding process in such a way that it can build nearly all its combatants on domestic yards, despite the small volume of orders and the apparent lack of yard specialisation? So this graph presents a first view of the total volume of naval building in tons, and the division over the major shipyards.
