Agility, speed and flexibility in production networks are required in today's global competition in the flat world. The accuracy of order date delivery promises is a key element in customer satisfaction. Agile production needs a management and evaluation tool for production changes. Discrete event simulation, DES, has mainly been used as a production system analysis tool, to evaluate new production system concepts, layout and control logic. DES can be used for operational planning as well, as shown in the paper. The simulation analysis gives a forecast of the future with given input values, thus production managers have time to react to potential problems and evaluate alternatives. A balance between multiple parallel customer orders and finite resources can be found. The authors are developing a system design evaluation method and also a decision support system for production managers. Two case studies with different approaches are described in the paper.

The recently proposed phase-imbalanced series capacitive compensation concept has been shown to be effective in enhancing power system dynamics since it has the potential to damp power swings as well as subsynchronous resonance oscillations. In this paper, the series capacitive compensation concept is investigated for damping subsynchronous resonance oscillations using a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC)-based hybrid series-capacitive compensation scheme. In this scheme, the series capacitive compensation in one phase is created by using a single-phase SSSC in series with a fixed capacitor , and the other two phases are compensated by the fixed series capacitors (C). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed scheme are evaluated on the IEEE first and second benchmark models for computer simulation of subsynchronous resonance by means of time-domain simulation analysis using the Electromagnetic Transients Program-RV program.

This study reviews gas engine-driven heat pump (GEHP) systems for residential and industrial applications in terms of energetic and exergetic aspects for the first time to the best of the authors’ knowledge. These systems are novel heat pump systems (one of today's promising new technologies). Although the first investigations had been performed at late 1970s, the first merchandized GEHP was produced and introduced in the market in 1985. Gradually, it has become widespread all over the world for various purposes. Main application of GEHPs are for space and water heating/cooling purposes. However, they can be integrated to industrial applications, especially to drying processes.In this study, historical development of GEHP systems was briefly given first. Next, the operation of these systems was described, while studies conducted on them were reviewed and presented in tabulated forms. GEHPs were then modeled for performance evaluation purposes by using energy and exergy analysis methods. Finally, an illustrative example was given, while the results obtained were discussed. In addition, a new project on integration of GEHP systems to food drying processes in Turkey initiated by the authors was introduced. It is expected that this comprehensive study will be very beneficial to everyone involved or interested in the energetic and exergetic design, simulation, analysis and performance of assessment of GEHP systems.

Energy resources and their utilization intimately relate to sustainable development. In attaining sustainable development, increasing the energy efficiencies of processes utilizing sustainable energy resources plays an important role. The utilization of renewable energy offers a wide range of exceptional benefits. There is also a link between exergy and sustainable development. A sustainable energy system may be regarded as a cost-efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly energy system that effectively utilizes local resources and networks. Exergy analysis has been widely used in the design, simulation and performance evaluation of energy systems.The present study comprehensively reviews exergetic analysis and performance evaluation of a wide range of renewable energy resources (RERs) for the first time to the best of the author's knowledge. In this regard, general relations (i.e., energy, exergy, entropy and exergy balance equations along with exergy efficiency, exergetic improvement potential rate and some thermodynamic parameters, such as fuel depletion ratio, relative irreversibility, productivity lack and exergetic factor) used in the analysis are presented first. Next, exergetically analyzed and evaluated RERs include (a) solar energy systems; (a1) solar collector applications such as solar water heating systems, solar space heating and cooling, solar refrigeration, solar cookers, industrial process heat, solar desalination systems and solar thermal power plants), (a2) photovoltaics (PVs) and (a3) hybrid (PV/thermal) solar collectors, (b) wind energy systems, (c) geothermal energy systems, (c1) direct utilization (district heating, geothermal or ground-source heat pumps, greenhouses and drying) and (c2) indirect utilization (geothermal power plants), (d) biomass, (e) other renewable energy systems, and (f) country based RERs. Studies conducted on these RERs are then compared with the previously ones in tabulated forms, while the Grassmann (or exergy flow) diagrams, which are a very useful representation of exergy flows and losses, for some RERs are given. Finally, the conclusions are presented. It is expected that this comprehensive study will be very beneficial to everyone involved or interested in the exergetic design, simulation, analysis and performance assessment of RERs.
