Social Pedagogy

La educación, en cualquiera de sus ramas y vertientes, pero especialmente la educación social, ha sido –y sigue siendo- uno de los medios clave para la promoción social y cultural de amplios sectores de la población, se ha convertido en uno de los motores del progreso y se ha revelado, al mismo tiempo, como una de las vías más seguras para incrementar las posibilidades de desarrollo, las cotas de justicia social, los niveles de solidaridad y los horizontes de libertad de personas, pueblos y regiones.

Todo esto y más lo ha sido y sigue siendo la educación –particularmente la social-, especialmente en momentos de crisis, ya sea ésta económica, social, cultural o espiritual. Y, qué duda cabe, nuestro tiempo, los albores del siglo XXI, es un tiempo de crisis radical en todos los órdenes de la vida. Es evidente que la vertiente económica de aquélla ha sido -y sigue siendo- la más visible, mas tan sólo es la punta del iceberg, lo aparente de una de mayor calado, que afecta a lo más radical y genuino de ser humano, al pensamiento, la cultura y la sociedad y, por extensión, a la educación.

Conviene, pues, invertir algunas dosis de energía y empeñar algunos esfuerzos en extender las fronteras del pensamiento y la específica actividad de la educación social, vitalizar su discurso, enriquecer sus prácticas y ampliar sus horizontes profesionales, esto es, en definitiva, ahondar en lo que aquélla ha sido, es y, sobre todo, lo que puede llegar a ser. Tales son los principales propósitos de este libro colectivo, que lleva por título En torno a la Educación Social. Estudios, experiencias y reflexiones, en el que han colaborado una decena de investigadores, docentes y especialistas que dedican su actividad a la educación social, que han aprovechado estas páginas para publicitar sus indagaciones, reflexiones y experiencias más significativas.

RESUMEN
El ocio, a cuyas prácticas más convencionales –lúdicas, festivas y recreativas– se han añadido en las últimas décadas experiencias y vivencias que amplían y/o diversifican su protagonismo en la vida cotidiana de la gente, representa un ámbito de especial trascendencia para el desarrollo humano. Sin obviar las controversias inherentes a sus realidades, el objetivo principal del trabajo que presentamos reside en conocer y analizar cuáles son las actividades de ocio en las que participan jóvenes (entre los 16 y los 21 años) con dos perfiles bien diferenciados: de un lado, los que siendo tutelados o ex tutelados han sido objeto de alguna medida de atención, protección o inserción social; de otro, los que han mantenido sus vínculos familiares en condiciones de “normalidad” como alumnos de Educación Secundaria Postobligatoria. El estudio, que tiene como soporte empírico la información obtenida mediante la aplicación de cuestionarios elaborados ad hoc a dos muestras de ambos colectivos en Cataluña, Galicia y Madrid, pone de relieve las coincidencias y divergencias en sus preferencias, desvelando las posibilidades y limitaciones entre aquellas y las prácticas de ocio que unos y otros jóvenes llevan a cabo. Un conjunto de circunstancias ante las que se reivindica una educación del ocio que aporte nuevas perspectivas en clave pedagógica y social; y, con ellas, nuevas oportunidades para construir la equidad y la inclusión social de la juventud en las sociedades que habitamos.

ABSTRACT
Leisure, to whose most conventional practices –ludic, festive and recreational– have been added in the last decades, experiences and livings which extend and/or diversify their protagonism in people’s daily life, represents an ambit of special importance for human development. Without neglecting the inherence in their realities, the main objective of our research is acquiring knowledge and analyzing what are the leisure-time activities. Involving young people (between 16 and 21 years old) with two well differentiated profiles: on the one hand, those who are being in foster care have been object of some degree of attention, protection or social insertion; on the other hand, those who have maintained their family ties under “normal” circumstances like students of Post-compulsory Secondary Education. This research, which has as an empirical support the information obtained through the application of surveys elaborated ad hoc to two samples of both groups in Catalonia, Galicia and Madrid, highlights the coincidences and divergences in their preferences, revealing the possibilities and limitations between those preferences and the leisure time activities that both youth groups carry out. This set of circumstances demands a proper leisure education, which contributes with new perspectives in social and pedagogical code; and, along with them, new opportunities in order to build the equality and the social inclusion of youth in the society we inhabit.

En undersøgelse af uddannelse kan fokusere på fx studentertilfredshed, på fremmøde eller på læringsudbytte i relation til de bekendtgørelsesfastsatte læringsmål. Alt afhængig af hvad man ser efter, får man forskellige billeder af hvad der foregår.
I vores forskningsprojekt har vi interessert os for professionsidentitetsdannelse. Uddannelsen til pædagog skal gøre godt for noget: de studerende skal blive til pædagoger, der forstår sig selv som fagpersoner, der kan tage ansvar for udøvelsen og bidrage til at fortolke og forny den. Vores optagethed af professionsidentitets-dannelse indebærer også en interesse for den studerende som aktør i sit eget uddannelsesforløb, der orienterer sig, finder og danner mening på baggrund af livshistoriske erfaringer og forhåbninger til fremtiden som professionsudøver. Et sådant perspektiv på de pædagogstuderende er, efter vores mening, tiltrængt i samtidens diskussioner af pædagoguddannelsen.
Vi har  lavet feltarbejde og interviewet studerende, undervisere og ledere på to forskellige uddannelsessteder, for at få indblik i de komplekse samspil og processer hvori den studerende møder professionsudøvelsen gennem uddannelsen på professionshøjskolerne
Vi har løbende arbejdet med at forstå og analysere vores erfaringer og fund i relation til spørgsmålet om professionidentitetsdannelse, og omvendt har vores erfaringer og fund bidraget til at vi har udviklet en nuanceret forståelse af professionsidentitet. Bogen bidrager således både med empirisk og med teoretisk viden.

""Las cárceles son un exponente visible de los fracasos de la libertad y, en cierto modo, de la educación. Paradójicamente, también son una forma de resolverlos. Partiendo de esta premisa, el texto que presentamos pone énfasis en el valor de la pedagogía social y de la educación social como vías alternativas a las prácticas educativas convencionales, que con frecuencia son poco o nada congruentes con las circunstancias en las que inscriben cotidianamente su vida
los reclusos, durante y después del cumplimiento de sus condenas. De ahí que insistamos en la necesidad de buscar respuestas educativas integrales, metodológicamente plurales y abiertas a
un quehacer pedagógico de amplias miras. De un lado, hay que comprometer éticamente a las instituciones penitenciarias en la tarea de ‘rehabilitar’ a los presos en sus derechos y deberes
cívicos. De otro, es necesario considerar que, aun tratándose de un entorno adverso y controvertido para la educación, las cárceles están obligadas a promover el pleno desarrollo de la
personalidad de quienes las habitan y contribuir activamente a su autonomía e inclusión social.
Finalmente, debemos reconocer que el sistema penitenciario ha de ampliar sus horizontes a otros entornos y realidades, como una ‘comunidad educativa’ que ni puede ni debe aislarse de la sociedad, inhibiéndose en su misión socialmente educadora. En este  escenario se enmarcan las actuaciones que el sistema penitenciario español ha venido promoviendo en los últimos años, agrupadas en cinco grandes áreas de actuación, a saber: programas de intervención, enseñanza reglada y formación, trabajo e inserción laboral, ocio y cultura, y programas deportivos. En todos estos programas cabe acentuar las señas de identidad pedagógico-sociales que los caracterizan, ya sea en sus principios y valores, ya sea en sus finalidades y objetivos, ya sea en las metodologías, los destinatarios o los agentes implicados.

Prisons are visible tokens of the failures of freedom and in a way the failures of education. Paradoxically, they are also a way of addressing those failures. This is the premise of this article, which emphasizes the value of social pedagogy and social education as alternatives to conventional educational practices. Conventional ways often jar with the circumstances in which members of the prison population live their lives while serving their sentences
and afterwards. That is why we insist on the need to look for comprehensive educational responses that are methodologically plural and open to forward-looking pedagogical practices.
First, penitentiary institutions must become ethically engaged in ‘rehabilitating’ prisoners for their civic rights and duties. Second, while prisons are an adverse, controversial environment
for education, prisons have the obligation to foster full personal development for inmates and actively help inmates become autonomous and integrated into society. Lastly, the penitentiary
system should expand its horizons to other environments and realities. It is a ‘learning community’ that cannot and should not be cut off from society. This must be recognized.
Prisons have a job to do in social education. This is the setting in which the initiatives that the Spanish penitentiary system has promoted over the past few years have taken place. The
initiatives are grouped into five major areas of action: action programmes, formal education and training, employment and job placement, leisure and culture, and sport. All these programmes
have their own hallmarks of socio-pedagogical identity, in terms of principles and values, aims and objectives, methodologies, the target population and the partners involved.""

This study utilises a multimodal project based learning approach to literacy pedagogy within a DEIS (delivering equality of opportunity in schools) band 2 school in Dublin, Ireland. It attempts to add to the knowledge base in the area of situated, contextualised literacies within an Irish context. It includes a critical review of the literature surrounding the issue, in particular literacy's sociopolitical nature and reviews current guidelines disseminated for teachers of EAL learners by Irish governing bodies and expert groups. Four participants’ spoken language was analysed using a multimodal analytical framework in the attempt to answer the research question; “are there benefits to using a multimodal project-based learning approach to develop the critical literacy of EAL learners?”
Findings suggest there may be increased motivational rewards for utilising locally produced resources in the language learning context. The multimodal approach may offer an increased possibility for paths to student empowerment within a post-primary context, by tapping in to the participants’ capabilities. Key themes that emerged from the participants’ own words in combination with current research were ‘community of learners,’ ‘informality’ and ‘support’ both emotional and academic.

(Open access). A historical and theoretical reconstruction of the specificity andpeculiarity of the discipline of social pedagogy, as it has developed in Denmark. Social pedagogy takes its departure from the idea that the individual person and the community are complementary but at the same time opposed to each other, so the task of social pedagogy is rebalancing the dynamics between the two. Social pedagogy is also characterised as a discipline with three dimensions: a practical dimension, a theoretical dimension and a professional dimension. The professional’s task is neither to apply theory in practice nor to uphold the usual practice; it is to mediate between theory and practice. The specificity of the discipline gives rise to particular challenges and dilemmas that theorists make understandable and transparent and practitioners have to deal with. A big challenge for social pedagogy is the quest for evidence-based methods that overrides the specificity of the social pedagogical approach. Balancing different forms of knowledge implies that programmes and methods are used as inspiration that can be contained in a social pedagogical approach.
