District heating networks are commonly addressed in the literature as one of the most effective solutions for decreasing the greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector. These systems require high investments which are returned through the heat sales. Due to the changed climate conditions and building renovation policies, heat demand in the future could decrease, prolonging the investment return period. The main scope of this paper is to assess the feasibility of using the heat demand – outdoor temperature function for heat demand forecast. The district of Alvalade, located in Lisbon (Portugal), was used as a case study. The district is consisted of 665 buildings that vary in both construction period and typology. Three weather scenarios (low, medium, high) and three district renovation scenarios were developed (shallow, intermediate, deep). To estimate the error, obtained heat demand values were compared with results from a dynamic heat demand model, previously developed and validated by the authors. The results showed that when only weather change is considered, the margin of error could be acceptable for some applications (the error in annual demand was lower than 20% for all weather scenarios considered). However, after introducing renovation scenarios, the error value increased up to 59.5% (depending on the weather and renovation scenarios combination considered). The value of slope coefficient increased on average within the range of 3.8% up to 8% per decade, that corresponds to the decrease in the number of heating hours of 22-139h during the heating season (depending on the combination of weather and renovation scenarios considered). On the other hand, function intercept increased for 7.8-12.7% per decade (depending on the coupled scenarios). The values suggested could be used to modify the function parameters for the scenarios considered, and improve the accuracy of heat demand estimations. Abstract This study aims to examine the nonsterilized fermentation conditions for coproduction of pectinases and lipase enzymes using several fruit wastes as an energy source. Thermophilic fungal strain, Penicillium expansum CMI 39671 was used as a fermenting strain. The effect of process conditions including; nitrogen sources, pH, temperature, time and moisture contents, on the production of both enzymes were studied. The highest activities of pectinase and lipase (2817, 1870 U/g dry substrate) enzymes were found with orange peel feedstock, whereas the lowest activities of 1662 U/g and 1266 U/g were found with banana peel and papaya peel feedstocks respectively. Overall, pectinase showed higher enzymatic activities than lipase enzymes, both having similar increasing and decreasing trends, at all studied conditions. The optimum process conditions of peptone as a nitrogen source, pH 7, 40°C, 5 days and 70% moisture contents, were found to show highest enzymatic activities for both enzymes. The orange peel feedstock showed no significant difference in both enzymes' activities at sterilized and nonnotarized process conditions. Pectinase and lipase enzymes showed (13791 U/g) and (8114 U/g) for sterilized and (14091 U/g) and (8324 U/g) for nonnotarized process conditions respectively. In addition, the fungal strains also produce bacteriocin-like compounds that could inhibit microbial growth. These findings will help to design and develop robust, cost-effective and less energy intensive enzyme production processes and consequently an efficient fruit waste to energy system through open fermentation. Abstract This study aims to examine the economic and environmental benefits of recovered paper and potential contribution of the recovered paper to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) Vision 2030. The Vision 2030 is an inclusive development policy, recently launched, with the objectives to build the best future for the country. The Vision 2030 is based on three ambitious goals: making the country a vibrant society, a thriving economy and an ambitious nation. It is estimated that by 2030, 5.05 million ton of waste paper would be recovered in the country. About 11.3 billion SAR (US $3.01 billion) would be added to the country's GDP and would create about 16,536 new jobs if the recovered paper industry is built in the country. Moreover, a net environmental benefit of 9.6 million crude barrel oil savings and 4.5 million ton of CO2 savings from GHG emissions could be achieved by 2030 only from the paper waste recovery in the country. The potential benefits of paper waste recycling in KSA highlight the needs of effective measures to optimize the economic and environmental opportunities inherited in the waste paper industry. These measures should focus on capitalizing the local waste paper processing industry, restrict the export of raw waste paper materials, and enhance the waste paper collection process and quantity.

A sustentabilidade de um edifício não baseia-se tão somente na análise global da sustentabilidade. É importante verificar a procedência dos materiais utilizados na obra, analisando a forma com que são produzidos e o impacto causado na produção. A certificação do bloco de solo-cimento-resíduo oferece uma análise pormenorizada do produto, mostrando seu ciclo de vida, a origem da matéria-prima e a gestão de resíduos. Por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, foram identificadas as características do produto que preenchem os requisitos formais necessários para a certificação LEED V4. A grande quantidade de matéria-prima reaproveitada ou reciclada e de origem sustentável no bloco de solo-cimento-resíduo faz com que o material consiga grande pontuação em todos os requisitos exigidos para a concessão de certificação de Materiais e Recursos, atendendo a anseios dos produtores e consumidores finais. Abstract The sustainability of a building is not only based on the global analysis of sustainability. It is important to verify the origin of the materials used in the work, analyzing the way in which they are produced and the impact caused in the production. The certification of the soil-cement-waste block offers a detailed analysis of the product, showing its life cycle, raw material origin and waste management. Through a literature review, the characteristics of the product have been identified that meet the formal requirements required for LEED V4 certification. The large amount of raw material recycled or recycled and of sustainable origin in the soil-cement-waste block means that the material achieves a high score in all the requirements required for the certification of Materials and Resources, taking into account the desires of the producers and Consumers.

In this work, two low-valued natural raw materials were used, namely a low plasticity and high iron content clay and a powdered rock waste generated during crushing of igneous rocks to produce construction aggregates. After characterization (chemical, mineralogical, thermal and granulometric), mixtures containing up to 75 wt.% of rock powder were prepared and extruded closely following industrial practice, and fired for 60 min from 900 to 1100 °C. Property development was evaluated on as-extruded,
dried and fired pieces. The results obtained were interpreted based on chemical compositions, the estimates from the Al2O3–SiO2–CaO phase diagram and presumed reaction kinetics. Such interpretation showed that physical characteristics dominate not only during shaping and drying, but also during low temperature firing (slow reaction kinetics), when rock additions act as inert material; at high firing
temperatures, however, the rock promotes liquid phase development after first melting (fluxing effect) and thermodynamics prevail. The dominant fluxing effect results in improved fired properties, which
were shown to depend almost linearly on the liquid phase content, predicted by the phase diagram and determined by the chemical composition. These results enabled the identification of behavioural composition ranges to best exploit the materials’ industrial use potential and demonstrate that current paradigms in raw material evaluation and processing in traditional ceramics industries need a re-assessment.

Lime stabilization has been and still is one of the most preferred methods for stabilization of expansive soils. However, in the recent times, utilization of solid waste materials in soil stabilization has gained prominence as an effective means to manage wastes generated from various sources. In this work, an attempt has been made to utilize waste materials from two sources as auxiliary additives to lime in the stabilization of an expansive soil. Bagasse ash (BA), a waste by-product from the sugar industry and Coconut shell powder (CSP), a processed waste obtained from left over coconut shells of oil extraction industry were used as auxiliary additives. An expansive soil obtained from a local field was subjected to chemical, mineral, microstructural and geotechnical characterization in the laboratory and stabilized using 3% lime. The waste materials were subjected to chemical, mineral and microstructural characterization. The stabilization process was amended with four different contents viz. 0.25%, 0.5%, 1% and 2% of BA and CSP separately and the effect of the amendment was studied on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), plasticity, swell-shrink and microstructural characteristics of the expansive soil. The results of the study indicated that BA amendment of lime stabilization performed better than CSP in improving the UCS, plasticity, swell-shrink and microstructure of the lime stabilized expansive soil.

The paper examines the  per capita  waste generation rates from  from rural areas  of Neamț County (Romania) using thematic cartography. Geographical approach of this issue is difficult because the lack of  a geostatistic database at commune  scale. Spatial analysis of waste indicators reveals several disparities between localities.  Comparability of data between communes located in various geographical conditions must be carrefully made according to local waste management systems. Several dysfunctionalities are outlined  in order to compare these results, on the one hand, between localities and on the one hand, between recent years. Geographical analysis of waste generation rates is imperative  for a proper monitoring of this sector. Data from 2009, 2010 and 2012  shows  that rural waste management is in a full process of change towards a more organized, stable and efficient system.
