Stairs

Stairs were first used by people to raise their shelters in order to protect them from the dangers on the ground and to provide them access to things at high altitudes. In later periods, people built temples that were raised with steps to reach God (or what they considered sacred) and to show their power. Initially built with limited materials and simple forms, the staircase gained different shapes and textures with the use of reinforced concrete and steel after the industrial period. This building element, which has a very important place in the discipline of architecture, has always been intertwined with the cultural, religious and linguistic structure of the society. For this reason, staircase has semantic, symbolic and psychological sub-identities alongside its function. Sometimes it was a monument that was placed in the
memory of a society and sometimes it was an art object depicting the most important thought of an artwork. And in architecture, stairs define the space, affect the space and even form the space. Thus they have gone beyond being a building element. In this study, the symbolic, aesthetic, artistic, monumental, experimental and multifunctional characteristics of the stairs are emphasized through examples
and an alternative classification to the existing classifications in the literature is proposed.

The social context for stairway design in multi-story buildings is changing. At one time, stairways were viewed primarily as a means of egress in an emergency, and elevators or escalators were the primary method of vertical circulation with the exception of monumental " feature " stairways. Today, the emphasis is changing to promote the use of stairways in buildings as opposed to use of elevators due to the health benefits of stair climbing. This is providing an opportunity for architects and building owners to experiment with innovative designs. One interesting innovation is the " interactive stairway. " Little is known about the impact of these interventions on the rate of stair accidents. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety of interactive stairway designs by comparing the user's behavior and the incidence of unsafe stair use on two interactive stairways with a stairway made of conventional material. A checklist for recording observations of stair users was developed. Observations were conducted in two museum buildings with interactive stairways and in one university building with a conventional stairway. Safety-related behaviors and incidents on the interactive stairways (CM and SM) and the conventional stairway (SU) were documented and compared. On the interactive stairways, more stair users glanced down at the treads (CM: 90%, SM: 81% vs. SU: 53%); fewer stair users diverted their gaze away from the stairs (CM: 22%, SM: 32% vs. SU: 66%); and handrail use was higher (CM: 40%, SM: 33% vs. SU: 28%). Incident rates were similar across the stairways (CM: 2.2%, SM: 2.2%, SU: 2.6%). The research suggests that interactivity can improve stair safety if used appropriately.

This paper discusses an evaluation of stairway designs featured in Architectural Record, a leading architectural professional journal, over a thirteen-year publication period (2000 to 2012). Images of stairways were classified as either hazard-free or hazard(s)-present using a hazard identification checklist, and the frequency of visible design hazards was tabulated. A total of 578 stairways were scanned in articles and advertisements, of which 78 (13.5%) were product advertisements. Sixty-one percent of the stairways had at least one visible design hazard including nearly half (47%) in product advertisements. The three most common hazards in stairways were inadequate handrails (161, 27.8%), excessive length of stairway flights (74, 12.8%), and low visual contrast on tread edges (73, 12.6%). The high prevalence of stairway design hazards in the professional literature indicates a need for improved professional education and media attention to safe stairway design.

Scale e risalite nella storia della costruzione in età moderna e contemporanea

Il tema delle scale (e delle loro controparti contemporanee, quali scale mobili, ascensori, rampe), affrontato alle sue radici dall’indimenticato convegno internazionale che si svolse a Tours nel 1979 (poi edito in “L’escalier dans l’architecture de la Renaissance”, Picard 1985) vuole qui essere approfondito secondo la logica del cantiere e delle tecniche, dall’età moderna a quella contemporanea. La giornata è aperta a proposte di segno diverso: dalla presentazione di singoli casi - eccezionali o anche ordinari - analizzati nella loro consistenza costruttiva, all’analisi di tipi costruttivi ripetuti, quali le scale palladiane o le “geometric staircases”; dal rapporto tra scale e risalite e l’uso di determinati materiali (la pietra, il ferro, il cemento armato, etc), alle conseguenze costruttive dell’impiego di determinate forme; particolarmente interessante potrebbe essere portare all’attenzione sistemi storici  di calcolo e verifica, ed evoluzioni normative, nel rapporto che hanno avuto con le pratiche del costruire. La “fine della scala” e la sua sostituzione o il suo affiancamento con altri sistemi di risalita – con ciò che comporta in termini di macchinari e impianti, da indagare in una prospettiva storica - è un altro tema, suscettibile di esplorazioni.

In accordo con il condiviso intento di oltrepassare le tradizionali divisioni disciplinari, la giornata di studi potrà essere organizzata in sessioni tematiche; queste saranno individuate dai curatori coerentemente con le proposte avanzate. Si ritiene, a questo proposito, importante ricordare che i lavori di pura descrizione, o di analisi spaziale / formale, per quanto interessanti e pertinenti per la cultura architettonica e per la storia dell’architettura in genere, non sono tra le ricerche che la giornata di studi intende promuovere. Si invitano in questo senso le persone interessate a consultare:  http://constructionhistorygroup.polito.it/project.html dove si discute dei molti, ma non infiniti, modi di intendere la ricerca del CHG.

Si prevedono comunicazioni comprese tra i 15 e i 25 minuti, per dedicare tempo sufficiente al dialogo e al confronto. Queste potranno essere in lingua italiana, inglese e francese. I partecipanti dovranno essere disponibili a fornire entro il mese di giugno un testo in una di queste tre lingue, con relative illustrazioni, per l’inserimento nel secondo numero dei Quaderni del CHG, da pubblicarsi entro il 2022.
In questa fase la call è innanzitutto diretta ai membri del CHG, oltre che ad altri colleghi e giovani studiosi del Politecnico di Torino. Tuttavia, come l’anno scorso, fin d’ora prevediamo un allargamento a colleghi italiani e internazionali che abbiano interesse a dialogare con il CHG su questo tema presentando una propria ricerca. Le proposte dall’esterno sono quindi benvenute.
