Prendendo spunto dagli interventi di restauro e trasformazione ai quali la Stauroteca Minore Vaticana nel tempo fu sottoposta, vengono presentati Meo Dominici de Flaviis e Manno di Sebastiano Sbarri, due artigiani orefici che con le proprie botteghe, rispettivamente nel XV e nel XVI secolo, hanno operato a lungo (entrambi per circa trent'anni) al servizio del Capitolo Vaticano, eseguendo lavori originali e riparazioni di reliquiari e altri oggetti sacri.
Nell'archivio capitolare, e soprattutto nei registri della Sagrestia, resta abbondante documentazione sulla loro opera, che purtroppo però in larga parte non è sopravvissuta a lungo, a causa del continuo rimaneggiamento e delle modifiche cui gli oggetti sacri venivano sottoposti. Se da un lato l'usura dovuta all'uso quotidiano di calici, ostensori, turiboli, reliquiari (nonché la necessità di adeguarli funzionalmente a mutate esigenze liturgiche) fornivano continuo lavoro alle botteghe artigiane, dall'altro essa conduceva a nuovi, continui interventi, che alteravano o distruggevano il lavoro precedente.
Di rilievo il profilo umano e professionale dei due artisti, desunto dall'abbondante documentazione consultata. Artisti di valore, essi hanno conosciuto, insieme alle loro famiglie, momenti di benessere, ma anche di indigenza, dovuti alla precarietà delle committenze. È uno spaccato di vita e di un arte considerata minore, che raramente assurge agli onori delle cronache e ancor meno a quelli della storia, ma che contribuisce a descrivere il contesto sociale di un'epoca.
La Stauroteca Minore rappresenta il fil rouge della narrazione. Ne viene descritta l'evoluzione strutturale, ad opera dei due ricordati artisti, e si narrano le vicende della reliquia in essa contenuta, dalla quale vennero estratte a più riprese, per volere del pontefice regnante, minuscole particelle, da inserirsi nelle croci pettorali che venivano consegnate a nuovi vescovi.

Dedicatory inscriptions on Middle Byzantine reliquaries have been analyzed for their documentary information, including prosopography, provenance, and date. Relying solely on this data limits our understanding of these objects. The methodology in this paper recontextualizes Byzantine reliquaries and their dedicatory inscriptions by reassessing the meaning and function of the Greek text through its relationship with the form of the object and its relics. The focus of this essay is on one case study—the Limburg Staurotheke, a reliquary of the True Cross now in the cathedral treasury of Limburg an der Lahn, Germany. Three levels of analysis will be applied to the staurotheke and its inscription. First, the dedication functions as a record of patronage—the identification of names, titles, and gifts. Second, it is a typological comparison of the patrons and Christ as expressed in the precise terminology chosen for the dedication. Third, the placement of specific words is significant when viewed in relation to the form of the object and the precious stones and pearls that embellish it. These approaches together reveal the multivalent messages conveyed through the reliquary’s complex interrelationship of text, form, and relic.

"Can an object be defined as votive solely based upon the presence of an inscription? Does relying upon such a definition restrict a more multivalent analyses of objects thus identified as votive? In this thesis, I examine the most prevalent practice used by scholars to identify votive offerings in the Middle Byzantine period – relying upon an object’s accompanying inscription. This study focuses on those objects inscribed with a particular invocation – one that uses the word boethei. I demonstrate that we cannot rely on this inscription alone to identify an object as votive. It is rather the combination of many elements, including medium, iconography, patron and function that contribute to this identification and which enable us to more clearly understand the multivalent messages conveyed by these objects.

In Chapter One, I turn to the context with which votive is most often associated – sacred. With each object I consider whether it is or is not votive and how the inscription contributes to that identification. In Chapter Two I examine objects inscribed with boethei that were intended for use or display in a secular context. While the objects discussed in Chapter One can be identified as votive, those discussed in this chapter cannot be so labeled. What then does the inscription mean in a secular context? In Chapter Three I present one object as a case study. I examine aspects of its production including inscriptions, patronage, iconography and function to argue that identifying a votive object requires a multivalent analysis of all its components. I show that, in this case, the patrons created a unified program of text, iconography and relics to convey their hope for salvation through perpetual prayer. I demonstrate that when all of these components are considered, we find a more precise message than what is explicitly stated in the inscription itself."
