Strangers

This article briefly outlines the history of the colonial diamond industry of Sierra Leone from 1930 to 1961, highlighting its contingent aspects and the bonds guiding the decisions and actions taken by local social actors in different contexts and at different times. By drawing on colonial documents and memoirs of colonial officers, it shows how the colonial government of Sierra Leone and the mining company that exercised a monopoly on diamond extraction collaborated on the establishment of a series of legislative and disciplinary devices that encompassed forms of biopolitical expertise.

In this paper I explore the multiple social ties that Beng infants forge with a large range of familiar and not-so-familiar Others.  In so doing, I highlight specific infant care practices that promote a large number of social relationships and meaningful “attachments” between a given infant and a wide variety of people, including both relatives and unrelated neighbors.  I then go on to investigate the striking case of "strangers," who also form part of the social universe of village-dwelling Beng babies.  I begin that section with a brief comparative discussion of the stranger in Beng and Western settings at large.  I then explore how the general image of the stranger shapes the ways in which Beng parents and other caretakers teach their babies to react to strangers, and how that experience contributes to the overall orientation of infants to sociabiity. 

Both these discussions form part of a broader argument: I aim to demonstrate that the Beng child-rearing agenda emphasizes as a major goal the imparting of the value of sociability.  Teaching infants to value social ties even to strangers is a dramatic version of this wider strategy.  In turn, the broad goal of socializing children to value high levels of sociability is motivated by a spiritual foundation: with an ideology of reincarnation combined with an extraordinarily high infant and child mortality rate, the major tenet of Beng infant care is to make the world appear as welcome a place as possible for babies.  Promoting a wide variety of social ties—whatever else its practical benefits for the labor supply of adults—is a meaningful component of this religious agenda.  I end the paper by looking at the implications that the Beng data hold for a general theory of childcare cross-culturally.

I testi che seguono condensano i temi e i contenuti del ciclo di conferenze Stranieri, barbari, migranti: il racconto della Storia per comprendere il presente, dipanatosi lungo tutto il 2016, che è stato dedicato al confronto con l'Altro, un tema cruciale per il nostro presente, a cui la Storia può offrire spunti di riflessioni ed esperienze da cui trarre insegnamento, costituendo inoltre un efficace antidoto ad atteggiamenti spesso motivati soprattutto da paura.

Le présent livre vise à  restituer et à examiner, de façon didactique, l’essentiel  des  études socio-anthropologiques de la campagne maghrébine. Il comprend un texte théorique, proche d’un manuel critique, et un recueil de textes illustrant les principales questions soulevées. La partie théorique procède à de brèves synthèses,  à des mises au point et à des évaluations critiques. Les entrées choisies s’imposent à toute étude et action engagées en milieu rural. Qu’on travaille sur le développement, l’approche participative,  l’éducation, les élections,  le rituel,  ou tout autre phénomène,  on est obligé d’avoir un minimum d’informations sur les structures sociales et la stratification sociale des groupes concernés On doit également avoir une idée sur la morphologie sociale, l’organisation sociale, la place des individus dans la communauté. En rapport avec ces entrées théoriques des textes de sociologues et d’anthropologues éminents maghrébins ou ayant travaillé sur le Maghreb sont choisis pour illustrer et approfondir les questions analysées. C’est une invitation à visiter les sources et à dépasser la lecture des textes de seconde main.

Repenser l'hospitalité

Face à la « crise des migrants », Michel Agier questionne notre rapport à l’hospitalité et montre la nécessité de son dépassement par la politique.

Pourquoi parle-t-on tant d’hospitalité au fur et à mesure de l’aggravation de la crise migratoire en Europe ? Parce que les États suspendent les droits de l’asile et du réfugié au contrôle des frontières, des territoires et des circulations, alors que dans le même temps politiques et médias attribuent au « peuple » les peurs et les rejets de l’étranger.
Ainsi mis en demeure de donner des preuves d’humanité, beaucoup de gens se sont retrouvés acculés à faire quelque chose : accueillir, nourrir ou transporter des migrants désorientés. Ils ont ainsi réveillé une vieille forme anthropologique qui semblait endormie, celle de l’hospitalité. Cette façon de s’opposer à l’« inhospitalité » de l’État, et ainsi d’entrer en politique par cette petite porte de chez soi qu’on ouvre, montre toutefois vite ses limites pour les accueillants comme pour les accueillis.
Michel Agier interroge la place centrale qu’occupe aujourd’hui l’« étranger ». Faute d’une réflexion à l’échelle planétaire, celui qui devient l’« hôte » dans la relation instituée par l’hospitalité du point de vue anthropologique s’efface derrière l’autre absolu et innombrable, fantasmé et déshumanisé dans la géopolitique des crises contemporaines. Envisager l’étranger que nous sommes tous dans un monde ouvert apparaît comme la seule manière d’empêcher sa disparition sous les traits de l’autre radical.

Michel Agier est anthropologue, chercheur à l’Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) et directeur d’études à l’EHESS. Il a dirigé le programme Babels (Agence nationale de la recherche, 2016-2019). Il a notamment publié Gérer les indésirables (Flammarion, 2008) et La Condition cosmopolite (La Découverte, 2013).

así como los conflictos que la aplicación de estos criterios puede suscitar apuntándose, en este caso, soluciones
jurídicas que uedan solventarlos.

O trabalho desenvolvido pelo suíço Robert Frank é comparável a outras grandes obras como as de Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans e outros “gênios” que, por meio de suas lentes, revolucionaram o fazer artístico da fotografia. O artigo aqui proposto analisa de que modo Frank, entre o final de 1950 e por toda a década seguinte, desenvolveu uma de suas maiores obras: os registros fotográficos feitos por várias partes dos Estados Unidos. O que, posteriormente, compôs o importante livro “Les Américains/The Americans”. Como metodologia de análise fez-se uso da leitura de imagem proposta por Alberto Manguel – em especial: a imagem como compreensão, testemunho e subversão. Algumas das reflexões ao fim do trabalho apontam para o olhar de um estrangeiro, Frank, sobre os EUA de modo que o “diferente”, isto é, as mazelas sociais, a crítica ao nacionalismo alienado, a cultura do carro, da autoestrada e a própria cultura beat, são mediações sociais e visuais realizadas de maneira sui generis por sua câmera.

The relevance of translation has never been greater. The challenges of the 21st century are truly glocal and societies are required to manage diversities like never before. Cultural and linguistic diversities cut across ideological systems, those carefully crafted to uphold prevailing hierarchies of power, making asymmetries inescapable. Translation and interpreting studies have left behind neutrality and have put forward challenging new approaches that provide a starting point for researching translation as a cultural and historical product in a global and asymmetrical world. This book addresses issues arising from the power vested in and arrogated by translation and interpreting either as instruments of change, or as tools to sustain dominant structures. It presents new perspectives and cutting-edge research findings on how asymmetries are fashioned, woven, upheld, experienced, confronted, resisted, and rewritten through and in translation. This volume is useful for scholars looking for tools to raise awareness as to the challenges posed by the pervasiveness of power relations in mediated communication. It will further help practitioners understand how asymmetries shape their experiences when translating and interpreting.

This paper addresses the question of the risks of hospitality through an examination of two twentieth century French philosophers, Vladimir Jankélévitch and Emmanuel Levinas. With Jankélévitch the limits of forgiveness, both practically and morally, are examined, and thus the limits of hospitality. Levinas offers another approach, still seeing the problematic nature of forgiveness, but insisting on the rights of the stranger who has no other protection, whilst also insisting on the fundamental place of justice in any debate over forgiveness and hospitality. The paper ends by drawing on these two authors to reflect on attitudes to migrants in the Czech Republic today and asks what the approaches described can provide.

Macrolevel analyses of the influence of different communication technologies are more difficult to test and apply than the results of focused studies of particular media messages. Nevertheless, “medium theory” is of potentially great significance because it outlines how media, rather than functioning simply as channels for conveying information between two or more social environments, are themselves social contexts that foster certain forms of interaction and social identities. This article uses a medium-theory perspective to address one variable related to “technological communities”—the changing boundaries between “them” and “us.” The ways in which oral, print, and electronic modes of communication each foster a different balance between strangers and “familiars” are outlined.

Otorite sisteminin kurumlaştığı toplumsal yapılarda cellat son derece yaygın bir toplumsal figür olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Hem merkezileşmiş kabile toplumlarında hem de daha kompleks bir örgütlenmeye sahip olan büyük devlet yapılarında cellatların Simmel’in yabancı ve Max Weber’in parya konseptleriyle ele aldıkları toplumsal kesimlerin mensupları arasından seçilmesi sıkça görülen bir durumdur. Bu çalışmada Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda cellatların yabancı / parya sınıflandırması ile ele alınabilecek toplumsal kesimlerden seçilmelerine ilişkin kronikler
ve seyyahların anlatılarından derlenmiş örnekler paylaşılmakta, çağdaşı ve selefleri gibi Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun da cellat temini pratiklerinde yabancı/parya topluluklara yönelmesini belirleyen dinamikler sosyo-tarihsel arka plan temel alınarak tartışma konusu yapılmaktadır.

Executioners were common social figures in societies of institutionalized power structures. It was a common practice that many of them were recruited from among the members of social groups which were discussed by Simmel and Weber in the context of the stranger and pariah concepts respectively in both centralized tribal communities and more complex state
structures. In this study, the samples, collected from chronicles and narratives of travelers, reflecting the fact that executioners were sometimes recruited from among the groups which can be classified as stranger/pariah are presented and the dynamics determining the Ottoman
Empire’s intention, like its predecessors and contemporaries, to employ the stranger/pariah communities as its executioners considering socio-historical background are discussed.

The economic and social prosperity of nations are usually attributed to functional requirements—such as honest government, effective transport and communication networks, health care and education—and development strategies such as investment in infrastructure. However, beyond a certain point peak economic and social success relies as much on human ingenuity as on capital investment. The article proposes that the world’s most prosperous societies have three recurring characteristics that foster such ingenuity: (1) they are all closely connected to trading portals, (2) they nourish paradoxical belief systems that underscore a proclivity for intellectual abstraction and pattern-based interaction, and (3) they are stranger societies that encourage high levels of interaction between unknown persons.

Der Text skizziert eine Geschichte des Fremden in der Geschichte menschlicher Gesellschaften. In einer Welt, die über Jahrzehntausende aus einer großen Zahl voneinander weitgehend getrennter Jäger-/Sammlergesellschaften bestand, waren die meisten anderen Menschen außergesellschaftliche Fremde, die bedrohlich wirkten, zu denen es aber nur selten Kontakt gab. Der Text beschreibt und analysiert die hauptsächlichen historischen Muster des Kontakts mit Fremden und der eventuellen Aufnahme/Inkorporation von Fremden in das eigene gesellschaftliche System. Es wird sichtbar, dass die Fähigkeit von menschlichen Gesellschaften in vielfältigen Formen Fremde in sich aufnehmen zu können und von ihrer Andersheit Gebrauch zu machen, ein wesentlicher Mechanismus der Entstehung soziokultureller Diversität und damit der Evolution des Sozialen ist. In den radikal neuartigen Sozialstrukturen der Weltgesellschaft, die sich in den letzten fünf Jahrhunderten herausgebildet hat, entsteht aber etwas vorher nicht dagewesenes: Urbanes Leben in Städten, in denen fast alle Anderen Fremde sind und es für diese Erfahrung Muster der Alltagsverarbeitung braucht, und zweitens globale Funktionssysteme, die die Inklusion von Personen punktualisieren und temporalisieren, so dass Fremdheit kein kompakter mit einer Gesamterfahrung der Person verbundener Sachverhalt mehr ist und in diesen Funktionssystem die Produktion von soziokultureller Diversität von Fremdheit abgelöst wird. In der Weltgesellschaft ist alle Differenz und Fremdheit gesellschaftsintern und das macht sie als soziale Fremdheit sowohl universell wie es sie auch flüchtig und nichtidentifizierbar macht.

This article discusses how contemporary Scottish literature often unsettles the binary logic of nationalism and cosmopolitanism. It provides a historical/theoretical premise on how and why such questioning of this deeply-ingrained binary is a much needed turn. ‘Strangers’ have had a very central role in devolutionary and post- devolutionary Scottish literature, which has accounted for a wide variety of attitudes and relations between them and the national community: from outsiders whose irreconcilable alien-ness is beyond what is knowable and assimilable, and represents a downright threat, to strangers, or ‘outsiders inside,’ that closely border on ‘Scotland’ and slowly alter its definition.Arguing for an ‘ethics of strangers’, the article then focuses on a number of texts, grouped around three constructions of the stranger: the stranger as outsider, the familiar stranger, the stranger caught between homes.

This book provides a uniquely positioned contribution to the current debates on the integration of immigrants in Europe. Twelve social anthropologists—“strangers by vocation”—reflect upon how they were taken in by those they studied over the course of their long-term fieldwork. The societies concerned are Sinti (northern Italy), Inuit (Canadian Arctic), Kanak (New Caledonia), Māori (New Zealand), Lanten (Laos), Tobelo and Tanebar-Evav (Indonesia), Banyoro (Uganda), Gawigl and Siassi (Papua New Guinea) and a township in Odisha (India). A comparative analysis of these reflexive, ethnographic accounts reveals as yet underrepresented, non-European perspectives on the issue of integrating strangers, enabling the reader to identify and reflect upon the uniquely Western ideals and values that currently dominate such discourse.

Depuis la perspective de la philosophe sociale contemporaine, nous pouvons délimiter un problème irrésolu : celui de l'exclusion absolue. En effet, si nous comprenons l'espace social du point de vue structural comme une répartition du sensible, l'identification de l'exclu est elle-même soumise aux rapports de pouvoir ; là est le paradoxe de toute théorie critique de l'exclusion. Toute théorie de l'exclusion est déjà médiatisée par le pouvoir au moment de définir ou de caractériser la catégorie d'exclu. De fait, il y a des exclus qu'on ne peut pas identifier par principe. Nous appelons ce phénomène « l'exclusion absolue ». Dans les termes de Rilke, « l'exclu absolu » serait comme « une harpe sur laquelle se brise » toute théorie qui essaie d'expliquer le problème de l'exclusion, l'exclu absolu étant celui sans place dans le monde, « le sans-patrie furtif » qui hurle en la tempête : d'où l'opacité de toute théorie de l'exclusion. La notion d'exclu absolu est alors à la fois une fiction théorique (que nous construisons à partir d'une critique immanente à la théorie sociale) et un outil qui nous permet d'identifier les limites de toute théorie de l'exclusion. Face à ce paradoxe, nous nous interrogerons sur les conditions de possibilité d'une phénoménologie de l'exclusion absolue qui resterait un phénomène indéterminé. Notre hypothèse est la suivante. L'exclusion absolue est indéterminée du point de vue linguistique, mais elle peut être traitée dans une théorie sociale fondée sur le point de vue pré-prédicatif, d'où l'importance de la méthode phénoménologique. Les fondements de ce e théorie sociale sont à chercher, à notre avis, dans deux formulations phénoménologiques, lesquelles prennent comme point de départ le concept d'hospitalité. De ce e manière, à partir d'un dialogue entre l'idée d'hospitalité déterminée selon Ricoeur et l'idée d'hospitalité inconditionnelle selon Derrida, nous proposerons une nouvelle définition phénoménologique de l'hospitalité, qui serait alors comprise comme surabondance de l'accueil d'un point de vue universel. Dans ce point-ci, il sera nécessaire de faire une distinction entre l'exclu absolu et l'étranger, car ces deux approches phénoménologiques de l'hospitalité ont été formulées à l'égard du thème de l'étranger et de l'exclu absolu. L'exclu absolu est une fiction théorique ou une catégorie eidétique qui nous permet d'utiliser les outils de la phénoménologie de l'hospitalité pour réviser les fondements théoriques de la théorie sociale et politique. « L'étranger » est une catégorie factuelle avec laquelle nous réfléchissons aux personnes vivantes, en chair et en os. Également, il s'agit d'une notion définie par un cadre théorique déterminé, de manière que, si nous disons que l'étranger est un « exclu », il ne s'agirait pas d'un exclu « absolu », mais d'un exclu « relatif » aux théories sur l'étranger. Par principe, nous ne pouvons pas déterminer les exclus absolus, car ils échappent à tout cadre théorique, raison pour laquelle nous ne pouvons pas dire qu'ils sont les étrangers. Cependant, le traitement phénoménologique par Ricoeur et par Derrida de la notion d'étranger nous perme ra de nous situer dans un cadre plus abstrait et plus universel, celui qu'on met en question avec la fiction théorique de l'exclusion absolue. Nous sommes convaincue que la surabondance de l'accueil, fondé sur un champ pré-linguistique, répond aux exigences de ce problème irrésolu par la théorie sociale et politique.

Through close-readings of Mary Tudor's royal entry, the anonymous interlude Wealth and Health, and John Christopherson's Exhortation alongside anecdotes of popular resistance to Mary Tudor's antiimmigrant proclamations, this article shows that rather than a strong identification with the monarch or some sense of Englishness, Londoners more closely identified with their multicultural metropolitan community for religious and economic reasons.

Cet ouvrage revient sur une question qui n'est certes pas inédite mais néanmoins constamment renouvelée : celle de la présence, du rôle et de la place des étrangers en Côte d'Ivoire, ainsi que du discours public qui se développe autour de ce sujet. Toutefois, l'étranger dans le sens du non-national n'épuise pas le champ sémantique du terme. Celui-ci peut aussi bien s'articuler dans un clivage interne à l'État-nation, comme le montre la focalisation importante dans les débats récents touchant aux rapports entre autochtones et allochtones. En effet, la société ivoirienne n'est pas faite que d'un État-nation tant soit peu cohérent et constitué, ayant un discours et un cadre légal reconnaissables et reconnus d'une « société de sociétés », chacune d'entre elles ayant nation, etc.) subissent en outre une transformation historique, la question de l'étranger devenant plus aigüe « par gros temps », lorsqu'il peut devenir un bouc émissaire facile et un catalyseur de tous les malaises de la société autochtone. Les textes réunis dans cet ouvrage abordent la question de l'étranger en Côte d'Ivoire à partir de quatre angles de vue différents : l'étranger dans la cité et dans le jeu politique et électoral contemporain, entre enjeux de pouvoir et participation citoyenne ; l'étranger au village et dans les cultures « traditionnelles », entre fermeture et devoir d'hospitalité ; l'étranger dans l'économie rurale, la question foncière et l'institution du « tutorat » ; l'étranger dans l'imaginaire et l'image publique et médiatique, partagés entre crainte et admiration.

En este texto se examina la irrupción en el concierto de la vanguardia de la poesía ecua-toriana y latinoamericana de la década del 30 del siglo XX de un jovencísimo Dávila An-drade, con un poema cuya madurez y audacia no deja de asombrar a propios y extraños hasta la fecha; también el impacta que su temprano y lúcido ejercicio poético produjo en el medio social y cultural de su ciudad de origen, Cuenca, así como su condición en tanto un sujeto que siempre supo moverse en lo que el autor del artículo, citando a Eugenio Montale, define entre "el poeta-sujeto y el sujeto empírico" .

Globalization via the digital age is upon us, demanding a new ethics and an intercultural awareness while the dialectics of globalism and cyberspace mandate a committed reflection on what the synthesis between the digital realm and global citizenship entails. In many ways, the borders that previously separated us as citizens physically and culturally have begun to dissipate, replaced by a call for an intercultural accountability and a form of global citizenship that, on one hand, surpasses borders, patriotism, and nationalism alike, but while on the other, demands an understanding and respect for the cultural idiosyncrasies among us, acknowledging the unique existential paradox of universal citizenship that posits each of us as both stranger and citizen on a commonly shared globe.

What is cosmopolitan in the digital age? Is a global digital citizen the same as merely a digital citizen? While talk of digital citizenship has increased in recent years, usually centered on a capitalist drive, encouraging a full electronic participation in society and a responsibility to digital commerce, many questions remain unanswered.  Is the netizen the citizen of a democratic state, and of digital democracy? As a citizen of the world interacting online, how will one’s “rights” and “duties” be determined? And are these “rights” universal, and in such a case, what does “universal” mean? What are the legal parameters of netizenship, and what will they be as globalization further takes hold? Is democracy critical to citizenship, or is it not? What are the political landscapes of global citizenship in the digital age? And last of all, is the concept of digital citizenship even tangible? Is it real?

Der vorliegende Beitrag nimmt sich eine theoretische Erörterung der Fremdheit-Problematik vor. Mit dem Begriff Fremdheit stoßen wir auf eine erste wichtige Schwierigkeit: Seine Definition. Auf Grund ihrer paradoxen Natur entzieht sich die Fremdheit und das Fremde jeder strengen Definition. Wenn wir einen fremden Gegenstand bestimmen, verschwindet eigentlich die Fremdheit dieses Gegenstandes zugunsten der Vertrautheit. Denn es scheint so zu sein, dass die Fremdheit vom Entzug charakterisiert ist. In der Bestimmung des Fremden ergeben sich mindestens zwei verschiedene mögliche Ansätze, nämlich diejenigen, der die Fremdheit als Schattenbereich 1 (Absolute Dunkelheit oder Zwischen?) oder als Außerordentliches 2 aufgreifen. Meine Absicht ist es, zu zeigen, wie beide Einstellungen sich zumindest als einseitig herausstellen und das komplexe Phänomen der Fremdheit übersehen. In der Tat bestimmen solche Ansätze die Fremdheit nur ex negativo, per Umkehrschluss gegenüber einem Gegenstück. Die Hervorhebung der Trennung zwischen Bekanntem und Unbekanntem, Vertrautem und Unvertrautem oder noch zwischen zwei verschiedenen bekannten Objekten schafft einen erkenntnistheoretischen Abstand, welchen ich anhand der existenzialen Räumlichkeit des Daseins bei Martin Heidegger auszulegen möchte. Mein Vorschlag besteht darin, die Frage nach der Fremdheit topologisch zu beantworten, und zwar in der näheren Auseinandersetzung mit der Phänomenalität 3 des Zwischen, wie dieses der Welt-, Mitseins-und Daseinsanalyse in Sein und Zeit zu entnehmen ist. Im Kontext der daseinsmäßigen Weltstruktur stellt sich das Zwischen als Grenze und Berührungspunkt dessen, was das Kategoriale im erkenntnistheoretischen Vorgang abzugrenzen scheint. Das derartig verstandene Zwischen erweist sich vielmehr als Hintergrund einer relationalen Offenheit, anstatt eine schichte Beziehung zwischen zwei getrennten Gegenständen auszumachen. Die Gleichzeitigkeit der paradoxen Logik des Zwischens bietet sich hier als Brücke dar, die erst ermöglicht, einen weltbildenden Bedeutungszusammenhang zum Vorschein zu bringen. Als Ausdruck dieser Logik erweisen sich Fremdheit und Vertrautheit als Phänomene, die voneinander nicht abzutrennen sind. Vielmehr stehen sie beide in einer gegenseitigen Prägung und verweisen sie ein aufeinander. Das Dasein Innerhalb dieser Verweisungsstruktur befindet sich das Dasein schon immer da, welche in der zukunftsausgerichteten Möglichkeit des Entwurfs gründet. Aus diesen Gründen erweist sich die Phänomenalität des Zwischens als relevant im Hinblick auf eine ausführliche Auslegung des »Fremdheit« Begriff.

This essay analyzes the four short novels concerned with railway journey wrote by Shi Zhecun during the 1930s to discuss the interactions between strange others and modern subject in the trial of desire. visual experience of mobility and time. Previous interpretations intend to apply some given theory to the texts, for instance, the approach of psychoanalysis. In contrast, this essay places the experience of railway journey first and reconstructs the correlation between railway journey and Freudian’s thought of uncanny to make dialogue between the literary experience and theoretical experience through examining Shi Zhecun’s works. I argue that the encounter with strangers in Shi’s writing is essentially a trial for the desire subjects: the modern male tourists failed the test since the gaze of subject resulted in the negation of reality and uncanny; the female tourists rejected the illusions of subject because of the ruined desires and survived through the trial at the price of misrecognized self-reflection.

Die Rolle von Fremden als Bühnenhelden in der Frühen Neuzeit verhandelt dieser Sammelband 1 in exemplarischen Analysen, die auf eine Tagung ei-nes einschlägigen Sonderforschungsbereichs in Freiburg im Breisgau 2015 zurückgehen. Das Thema ist ergiebig und zielführend, ermöglicht es doch den Zugang zu einem in der Literatur der Frühen Neuzeit häufigen Phäno-men. Die Analyse von Fremdendarstellungen in Bühnenwerken verschiede-ner Art ist dabei besonders geeignet, die Ambivalenzen herauszuarbeiten, die eben damit verbunden sind, daß der Fremde ein Held ist bzw. der Held in einer entscheidenden Hinsicht fremd bleibt. Das Musterbeispiel hierfür ist sicherlich eines der bekanntesten Werke der Weltliteratur, Shakespeares Othello, dem sich hier der Anglist Tobias Döring widmet. Othello ist in vieler Hinsicht ein Fremder, nicht zuletzt aber auch auf der Bühne, als Bühnenfi-gur, insofern das Theater selbst ein Ort ist, der gegenüber der Alltagswelt fremd ist. Ralf Hertel nimmt sich einen anderen englischen Autor vor, Chri-stopher Marlowe, der mit seinem Tamburlaine einen letztlich fremd blei-benden Helden inszeniert, denn seine Fremdheit hat auch damit zu tun, daß man sich mit ihm nicht wirklich identifizieren kann. Das mag im übrigens auch die etwas randständige Position des Dramas in der englischen Litera-tur erklären.
