Terminological Variation

La metáfora y la metonimia son dos fenómenos lingüísticos utilizados frecuentemente para explicar conceptos propios del conocimiento especializado. En medicina, suponen una herramienta utilizada tanto por especialistas, con el objetivo de transmitir conocimiento, como por pacientes, con el propósito de dar explicación a los síntomas de padecen y a las sensaciones que perciben. En este trabajo, se han descrito variantes denominativas motivadas por el uso de la metáfora y la metonimia a partir de un corpus de textos sobre la diabetes redactados en español de Chile.

Metaphor and metonymy are two linguistic phenomena frequently used to explain concepts ofspecialized knowledge. In medicine, they are a resource used by specialists with the aim of transmitting knowledge, as well as by patients for the purpose of explaining the symptoms they suffer and the sensations they perceive. In this work, denominative variants motivated by the use of both metaphor and metonymy are described using a textual corpus on diabetes written in Chilean Spanish.

In the recent economic crisis, many medical terms have been used metaphorically in the press. The economy is sick is the metaphor underlying some such terms (collapse, contagion, virus, crisis, recovery, etc.). The parallelism between Economy and Medicine is organized, like sickness, chronologically. In this article, we use the DiCEM (a general and specialized corpus of press texts written in Spanish and French from 2007 to 2017) to draw the medical terminology of the crisis. We organize it chronologically to analyze it as a coherent metaphorical network (Rossi, 2015) or essaim métaphorique (Prandi, 2010) in whose dynamics cognitive, as well as linguistic and pragmatic factors operate. We compare the terminological metaphors in both cultures and genres to see if they are presented there in the same way regarding communicative, semantic and pragmatic aspects. The analysis of the crisis as a metaphor has already been studied in other cultures, Soddeman (2013) and Stender (2015) (German culture), Silva (2013) (Portuguese culture), and Alves (2016) (Brazilian culture). The innovation in our proposal issues from the comparative approach and the emphasis on the chronological aspect.

This paper aims to show that the probabilities for a specialised neologism to become an established term are linked to a series of quantitative (frequency of use, distribution rate) and qualitative (term variation and equivalence) factors. Moreover, since, for a given neologism, both the frequency of use and the distribution rate, on the one hand, and the very existence of variants and equivalents, on the other hand, generally differ through the years, a diachronic study is particularly relevant. The literature around the notion of specialised neologism will first be reviewed in order to determine my research hypothesis and the purpose of my analysis. Then, I describe the methodology used to compile a corpus in the medical field of rare diseases and to detect neologisms. Finally, the last section is devoted to analysing, for two neologisms, the data collected for each factor which I assume to be relevant for them to become established terms in this specific discourse community.

En este artículo, proponemos estudiar la evolución en el tiempo de un conjunto de términos sinonímicos que se refieren a una misma enfermedad rara. En teoría, la sinonimia no es ideal para las lenguas de especialidad que tienen que ser un medio de comunicación eficaz e inequívoca (Sager, 1990). En la práctica, una consulta del portal Orphanet 1 , nos permite constatar que existen varias denominaciones para referirse a una misma enfermedad rara. Por ejemplo, enfermedades raras como la enfermedad de Fabry lleva seis denominaciones diferentes (angioqueratoma corporal difuso, angioqueratoma difuso, deficiencia de alfa-galactosidasa A, enfermedad de Anderson-Fabry, FD) y otras como la ictiosis en confeti se puede referir por cinco maneras diferentes (eritrodermia ictiosiforme reticular congénita, CRIE, IWC, ictiosis variegata). Así fenómenos de sinonimia, o por lo menos, variantes terminológicas parecen ser frecuentes en el ámbito de las enfermedades raras. La variación denominativa en ámbitos especializados ha sido el enfoque de la tesis doctoral de Judit Freixa (2002). Demostró, entre otros cosas, que cuanto más especializado es un texto tanto menos variaciones denominativas hay. Es decir que los fenómenos de variaciones denominativas tienden a aumentar con el grado de vulgarización científica de un texto. Añade que las denominaciones más frecuentes en artículos más especializados defieren de las utilizadas en artículos de divulgación. Por eso, suponemos que un término acaba siendo más utilizado en las publicaciones que sus sinónimos y que si comparamos un corpus de artículos con un alto grado de especialización con un corpus de la lengua general, las denominaciones más utilizadas no serían necesariamente las mismas. Para comprobar nuestra hipótesis, hemos realizado un estudio de caso basado en corpus. Nos hemos focalizado sobre la evolución de varias denominaciones que se refieren a la esclerosis lateral amiotrófica, enfermedad neurodegenerativa que afecta el famoso físico británico Stephen Hawking. Se documentan cuatro términos distintos para hacer referencia a la esclerosis lateral amiotrófica: un epónimo procedente del inglés (enfermedad de Lou Gehrig), otro epónimo del francés (enfermedad de Charcot), un término descriptivo (esclerosis lateral amiotrófica) y una sigla (ELA). Analizaremos las ocurrencias de cada término y sigla en un corpus bilingüe inglés/francés, es decir las ocurrencias de Lou Gehrig disease, Charcot disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis y ALS en inglés, y las de maladie de Lou Gehrig, maladie de Charcot, sclérose latérale amyotrophique y SLA en francés. Suponemos que puede haber discrepancias entre los resultados en cada una de las lenguas: ¿el término que prevalece en francés es el mismo que prevalece en inglés? Es lo que quisiéramos averiguar, teniendo en cuenta el origen de cada uno de los términos referidos. 2. Un repaso histórico… En 1869, en París, un médico francés, Jean-Martin Charcot, descubrió y describió por primera vez una enfermedad que generaba una atrofia de los músculos de la mano, extendiéndose al brazo, a la pierna, a las mandíbulas, a la lengua… Le dio el nombre de esclerosis lateral amiotrófica 2. Acuñó el adjetivo amiotrófico del griego antiguo a-que significa no, mio-que se refiere a músculo y-trófico que significa nutrición. Amiotrófico significa que los músculos no reciben lo que necesitan para funcionar y por eso se puede decir que se atrofian. Lateral se refiere a las áreas de la columna vertebral donde están localizadas

The prescriptive school of thought in terminology holds that terms should be fixed items and should not be prone to variation. More recently, however, descriptive studies have begun to reveal that many terms do in fact have variants. This poses a challenge for language professionals such as translators and terminologists, who need to decide which form of a term to use in a given context. This article explores one specific type of variant that occurs frequently in medical language — variants that can be formed by combining elements of a term in a different order (e.g.cardiovascularvs.vasculo­cardiac). By studying such variants in corpora, we have identified some regular patterns that appear to reveal conceptual, linguistic and social motivations behind term choice. An understanding of these factors may help translators and terminologists to choose the most appropriate term.

Council Framework Decision 2001/220/JHA was the first legal act adopted by the European Union to lay down general provisions addressing victims of crime and their rights. Significant progress was achieved a decade later by adopting Directive 2012/29/EU, which established minimum standards on the rights, support, and protection of victims of crime. This article presents a study conducted on the terms starting with the head element “right” extracted from both acts. The aim was to determine whether the legal progress experienced in a decade was accompanied by an evolution in the terminology used. The study revealed that, when legal terminology is analysed from a diachronic perspective, different phenomena can be observed: in this case, instances of stability, formal neology, and complete neology were identified. Diachronic evolution phenomena in legal terminology are then considered from a didactic perspective: students of law, legal translation, and legal terminology are deemed likely to benefit significantly from the inclusion of the diachronic dimension in their studies.

In the last decade, EU legislators have been devoting increasing attention to victims of crime and their rights. The purpose of this study is to focus on English victim-related terminology and identify cases of terminological dynamism which can cause potential difficulties to legal translators. Although the EU and the national legal systems co-exist in and regulate the same judicial space, the terminology used is not shared by all the systems. The absence of a priori established equivalent terminologies may make it difficult for translators to map legal concepts to the appropriate legal system. The study therefore aims at highlighting the need for resources specifically designed for legal translators and presents MuLex, a legal translation-oriented TKB in which multilingual data are accompanied by conceptual maps underlying intra-linguistic asymmetries and different degrees of cross-linguistic equivalence.
