Neology

In the article the question of individual author's word-formation of neologisms-nouns in Volodymyr Kolomiets' and Pavlo Movchan's language poetic is investigated. The mechanisms of derivation of the derivative nouns were observed. The analysis of the function of the neologisms-nouns in writers' individual styles was done.

Lindy Hop, a jitterbug dance originating in Harlem (NY, USA) in the 1920’s, has been taught on a popular scale in the city of Barcelona (Spain) since 1997. Despite its increasing popularity, little is known about the use of specialised terminology in this discursive context, where English loanwords are very widespread. In addition, the clear lack of terminology studies in this field of specialization, along with the absence of research in Lindy Hop in Catalan language make it a matter worthy of study from a terminological point of view, as well as a rather innovative endeavour. The goal of this research is to analyse the units of specialised meaning extracted from an oral corpus created for this purpose, to define them and to determine the preferable alternatives of the terms when used in Catalan discursive contexts by means of a standardisation study. The scope of this work encompasses the 67 units constituting the corpus, out of which 8 problematic units (those that presented one or more alternatives in Catalan) were selected. Following the criteria established by the TERMCAT (Catalan language terminology centre), the research performed a terminology standardisation process. A comparison of each term’s equivalents in other romance languages was carried out so as to determine the preferable alternatives in Catalan Lindy Hop contexts. One of the main outcomes of this research highlights that even when a Catalan alternative to a term of English origin exists (and is used), it never fully replaces the loanword, perhaps for reasons of prestige.

PROEPÍLOGO

Este trabajo se inspira en estudio precedente: “Los términos turista y turismo en el CORPES siglo XXI: usos recurrentes y nuevas combinaciones léxicas” (Rodríguez Abella y Valero Gisbert, 2017), donde pudimos constatar que nos hallábamos en un terreno en expansión. En efecto, las creaciones neológicas y las combinaciones a partir del sustantivo turismo arrojaban resultados a veces desconcertantes. En particular, en nuestro estudio constatábamos una abundante presencia de combinaciones marcadas en sentido negativo: turismo de guerra, turismo de desventura, turismo radioactivo, turismo delictivo, turismo pedófilo, turismo abortista, turismo de trasplante, turismo de bisturí, turismo de borrachera, turismo sexual o sexoturismo, turismofobia, etc. (ibidem, 304-306).
En esta investigación, en primer lugar, ilustraremos sucintamente cuando nace la práctica del turismo tal y como la concebimos hoy día. En segundo lugar, describiremos algunas de las nuevas formaciones creadas a partir del sustantivo ‘turismo’ para nombrar los productos más recientes del sector. Nos centraremos principalmente en los neologismos que se alejan del sentido originario del vocablo, privilegiando las formaciones que han penetrado más rápidamente en los ámbitos del habla común, se consignan tanto los neologismos registrados en el CORPES siglo XXI como en el corpus esTenTen (2018) de Sketch Engine.

The research is concerned with the phonotactic, morphotactic, graphic, logical, derivational, and syntactic features of clipped English slang neologisms coined in the early 21 st century. The main preconceptions concerning clipping per se are revisited and critically rethought upon novel slang material. An innovative three-level taxonomy of clippings is outlined. The common and distinctive features of diverse types of clipping are identified and systemized.

English abstract
This book is the first worldwide handbook of Portuguese Technical Translation. It covers theoretical texts on writing, translating and creating terminological neologisms; it also covers practical subjects in technical translation, such as internationalization, localization, and project management, CAT tools, QA issues, checklists, and international standards. It also presents the largest Portuguese terminological vocabulary in this domain.

Este livro é o primeiro manual de tradução técnica em toda a Língua Portuguesa. Abrange textos teóricos acerca de escrita, tradução e criação de neologismos terminológicos; abrange também temas práticos em tradução técnica, tais como questões sobre internacionalização, localização e gestão de projetos, ferramentas CAT, procedimentos de garantia de qualidade, listas de verificação e normas internacionais. Apresenta ainda, neste domínio, o maior vocabulário terminológico em português.

Цель статьи – представить исследование неологизмов в речи греческих детей дошколь-ного возраста. Лексическое творчество широко встречается в детском возрасте: частот-ность и легкость, с которыми дети создают новые слова, показывают, что в этом воз-расте дети уже осознали существование словообразовательных процессов и моделей и пытаются применять в собственном речевом поведении принципы, управляющие слово-образовательной системой. Внимание авторов сосредоточено на исследовании дерива-ционных неологизмов, исследуется, в какой степени греческие дети дошкольного воз-раста усвоили специфические характеристики деривационных правил в родном языке, какие типы значений выражают с помощью деривации и какие формы предпочитают для выражения этих значений.

This paper aims at studying the lexical innovations in Greek preschool children's speech. Lexical creativity is a widespread phenomenon in childhood: the frequency and ease with which children coin words indicate that children have already perceived the existence of word formation devices and they try to apply principles governing the word formation system. The core of this paper focuses mainly on derivational neologisms: we will make an attempt to investigate to what extent Greek preschoolers have mastered specific features of derivational rules in their language, what kind of meanings they most frequently create and which forms they prefer to use to express the intended meanings.

The study of new lexical forms constitutes particular challenge when it concerns a language, which has been inadequately documented during its history. This work is aimed to show how, in presence of a scarce written corpus, it is possible to identify neologisms that merged in Southern Quechua as a result of the cross-cultural contact between Quechua and Spanish speakers. It explains how formal neologisms (new forms created solely by the means of indigenous inventory) can be distinguished from mere semantic changes in the traditional lexicon and how it is possible to define whether a neologism was created by a native speaker as a part of authentic cultural response or was coined in order to fulfill translation needs. My general purpose is to demonstrate how neologisms can be studied from the perspective of contact linguistics, and how theoretical considerations on neology that developed within terminology studies can aid in this task.

EL GÉNERO EN LOS SUSTANTIVOS:
¿FLEXIÓN Y/O DERIVACIÓN?

El contraste entre parejas del tipo chico / chica, niño / niña o perro / perra parece apuntar hacia el estudio del género de los sustantivos en el ámbito de la morfología flexiva.  Ahora bien, pares como manzana / manzano o naranja / naranjo hacen pensar más bien en que nos movemos en el terreno de la morfología léxica (o en una especie de derivación seudoflexiva). Lo cierto es que hay casos extremos en los que parece que la asignación al campo de la flexión o al campo de la derivación está justificada y resulta coherente.
Y queda abierta también otra posibilidad de interpretación y análisis: ¿y si el género nominal no es estrictamente hablando ni un fenómeno flexivo ni un fenómeno derivativo?

Si todos los casos de variación genérica del español respondieran, o bien al esquema opositivo chic-o / chica-a, o bien al esquema manzan-a / manzan-o, no habría grandes dificultades para llegar a aceptar que la primera de las parejas ejemplifica un proceso flexivo mientras que la segunda ejemplifica un proceso derivativo. El problema radica en que ni formalmente ni desde el punto de vista del contenido hay regularidad en la línea que parecen marcar los ejemplos que ahora comentamos. Formalmente, sabemos bien que la variación genérica en español está muy lejos de responder a una relación biunívoca estable (del tipo -o para el masculino, -a para el femenino). Desde el punto de vista del contenido, es también conocida la innumerable casuística en la que se puede caer para delimitar los significados de aquellas parejas que –oponiéndose en cuanto a su género de modo -o masculino / -a femenino– no tienen correlato con referidos sexuados o animados.

Si no se quiere caer en una casuística excesiva que desbarate la propia validez del concepto de ‘género’, para tratar de dar coherencia y, en la medida de lo posible, homogeneidad al tratamiento del género en español es necesario intentar presentar una explicación globalizadora. En esta línea, han sido varias las propuestas formuladas por diversos estudiosos. En concreto, y sin ánimo alguno de exhaustividad, nos vamos a referir a tres posibles acercamientos globalizadores al tratamiento de género en español:

1). Admitir globalmente que todas las manifestaciones de género en español son, o bien fenómenos flexivos (incluidos los casos extremos aparentemente no flexivos del tipo manzan-a / manzan-o), o bien fenómenos derivativos (incluidos los casos extremos aparentemente no derivacionales del tipo chic-o / chic-a).

2). Asumir, en la descripción y análisis del género nominal, el concepto de ‘marca de palabra’.

3). Proponer un análisis basado en esquemas configuracionales (estructura flexiva de palabra) más que en identificaciones de morfemas concretos.

Por nuestra parte, proponemos una visión globalizadora diferenciada: una caracterización no-discreta del género nominal que vaya desde casos prototípicamente flexivos hasta casos prototípicamente derivativos.

Sobre los compuestos (para)sintéticos ¿en español?

La denominada “parasíntesis en composición”, que parece escasamente representada en lenguas como el español (machihembrar, corchotaponero), es un procedimiento lexicogenético parcialmente relacionado con el proceso de synthetic compounding característico, entre otras, de las lenguas germánicas, en las que sí está notablemente representado y en las que ofrece una significativa productividad (blue-eyed, taxi-driver).

Además, la desigual suerte que han corrido en las lenguas románicas y en las lenguas germánicas los términos de “compuesto parasintético” y de “synthetic compound” complica todavía más el panorama a la hora de intentar establecer relaciones entre estos tipos de formaciones. De este modo, no es de extrañar que, si desarrollamos un análisis contrastivo entre el español y otros idiomas que sí disponen productivamente de dicho procedimiento de creación de palabras, los resultados sean significativamente llamativos.

Asumiremos una delimitación unitaria para ambos procedimientos de creación léxica, en la medida en que en ellos lo característico es la actuación conjunta y solidaria de dos procesos de creación léxica. En este sentido, la consideración de los fenómenos sometidos a examen puede dar lugar a resultados llamativos, como el que se propone en este artículo.

Los compuestos españoles del tipo [VsufN+N] (lavaplatos, sacacorchos, abrebotellas) han sido calificados en la literatura especializada como “compuestos verbales” o “compuestos sintéticos”. Lo que se produce, en nuestra opinión, es una nominalización interna en el proceso de composición; de manera que el proceso de nominalización debe ser considerado como una parte del proceso de formación del compuesto: son dos operaciones lexicogenéticas que actúan solidariamente. En suma, son formaciones que, con pleno derecho, pueden ser catalogadas como “parasintéticos en composición” en español. De ser así, la parasíntesis en composición dejaría de ser un fenómeno marginal y periférico dentro de la morfología léxica del español.

The present paper illustrates neological clues of Odyssey’s vocabulary, revealing the productive character of Nikos Kazantzakis and defines a typology in order to classify linguistic elements and lots of unknown words of the epic poem. Neologisms and undictionaried words, which someone encounters in the poem, form an unfamiliar poetic language. The writer consciously attempt to compose his personal language and to create a pan-hellenic demotic. Kazantzakis sketches a multi-lexical puzzle, involving idiolects and neologisms or dialectic and idiomatic or derived and compounding words. Thus, pragmatic, semantic and stylistic difficulties make Odyssey as a quite incomprehensible epic poem.

La réflexion sur la néologie et le néologisme est un épiphénomène du questionnement sur le sens qui occupe la lexicographie, la linguistique générale et la sémantique au XIXe siècle. Le traitement du néologisme est un problème majeur du dictionnaire car il concerne à la fois sa macrostructure – la sélection de la liste des entrées (néologie formelle) – et sa microstructure – le processus d’enrichissement des sens (néologie sémantique). Si le néologisme est un observable, le discours théorique est complexe et contradictoire. En effet, la néologie est vue comme un dispositif interne de la langue, mais son résultat – le néologisme – fait l’objet des censures puristes. De plus, autour de la néologie et du néologisme se cristallisent des interrogations capitales pour la linguistique générale et la sémantique : c’est la question de la motivation (et démotivation) des signes qui est posée (Bréal, Darmesteter, Saussure). Le sentiment de la nouveauté de la part des locuteurs est également questionné car cela se mesure aux notions de possible en langue, attesté et attestable. Le néologisme est la démonstration du possible de langue, un mécanisme qui comporte en creux une expertise épilinguistique et qui permet aux locuteurs de tester une certaine possibilité de segmenter les formes de la langue. D’autre part, l’article montre que le recoupement entre les notions de ‘néologie’ et de ‘néologisme’ est à l’origine d’une nouvelle étape de la conceptualisation, au sein de laquelle on constate l’émergence de l’acception autonymique du terme ‘néologisme’. À l’exception du Dictionnaire général, l’acception de néologisme en tant que signe-nommant ne se traduit pas dans la généralisation des marques de nouveauté, ni du reste dans l’acceptation des néologismes. La considération théorique du phénomène est en porte-à-faux avec les pratiques lexicographiques. En termes lexicologiques, le sémantisme des deux termes connaît une nouvelle configuration : la notion de néologisme cesse d’être l’antonyme de néologie pour en devenir synonyme. Le terme néologisme désigne alors une pratique sémiologique naturelle (emploi de nouveau mot). Cette acception est à l’origine d’un processus d’élargissement sémantique par lequel néologisme en vient à désigner le mot lui-même.

"DAVID SERRANO-DOLADER: “Apéndice I. La morfología léxica y el español como lengua extranjera. (Selección bibliográfica comentada)”.

El tratamiento de la formación de palabras es una de las parcelas más abandonadas de la didáctica del español como lengua extranjera y no se le ha dedicado, ni en reflexiones teóricas ni en aplicaciones prácticas, la atención que merece. El autor presenta una bibliografía crítica selectiva referida a la morfología léxica en el ámbito del español como lengua extranjera. En ella, se recogen tanto trabajos específicamente dedicados al desarrollo de la morfología léxica en relación con el E/LE cuanto algunos otros que, sin centrarse expresamente en el campo del E/LE, pueden igualmente resultar interesantes para profesores y aprendientes de español. Cada estudio es presentado con un breve comentario resumen y/o con alguna valoración sobre su grado de interés. Y todo ello, advirtiendo que realmente no hay una tradición consolidada en estudios teóricos sobre este campo en su aplicación directa al español como lengua extranjera. Podemos destacar tres características de los estudios que, con diferente grado de especificidad, atañen a la formación de palabras en E/LE: 1) son estudios que, salvo excepciones, no se enmarcan en una línea teórica muy delimitada sino que parten de un cierto eclecticismo teórico o de una marcada indefinición en los postulados de base; 2) tanto la carga teórica de los estudios en cuestión como su ámbito temático —aun ocupándose de la formación de palabras— no ofrecen la homogeneidad que sería deseable en un ámbito tan importante para la enseñanza-aprendizaje del español como lengua extranjera; 3) como consecuencia del carácter multidisciplinar de los diversos acercamientos a la formación de palabras, algunos de los estudios atañen, a la vez que a dicho ámbito, a otros temas generales de E/LE (la adquisición de segundas lenguas, la enseñanza-aprendizaje del léxico, cuestiones de interlengua y análisis de errores)."

La mondialisation accélère les contacts de langues et uniformise les modes de vie et de pensée par-delà les frontières. Le présent ouvrage donne un aperçu, à travers différentes langues, de l’impact linguistique de ces phénomènes de mondialisation et de contacts sur les emprunts lexicaux et sur leurs conséquences sur le lexique des langues qui les importent ou en subissent les influences.

Les différentes contributions rassemblées ici s’intéressent à des emprunts (essentiellement à l’anglais) apparus récemment ainsi qu’aux éventuels néologismes créés comme équivalents (traductions, calques, synthèses néologiques) et en analysent la circulation. Les recherches, conduites sur une ou plusieurs langues (français et polonais mais aussi arabe, espagnol, italien et tchèque) dans des domaines sociétaux innovants, montrent des différences de réactivité des langues, ou plutôt de leurs locuteurs, face à ces emprunts : acceptation des emprunts tels quels, assimilation plus ou moins importante ou recherche d’équivalents, qu’il s’agisse de réactions spontanées ou du résultat de politiques d’aménagement linguistique.

Esta obra se acerca a cuestiones que atañen al ámbito morfológico en su relación con el E/LE. No es un manual generalista sobre morfología y E/LE, sino un compendio de artículos que, partiendo de diferentes perspectivas, busca abrir puertas en este campo: desde precisiones sobre cuestiones de adquisición de lenguas segundas hasta propuestas concretas de actividades para el aula; desde la presentación de problemas que ofrecen las unidades morfológicas del español hasta reflexiones sobre la (in)adecuación de diversos acercamientos a la reflexión gramatical en el E/LE; desde panorámicas sobre el camino seguido por la indagación morfológica en metodología con corrientes hoy ya desfasadas hasta ajustadas presentaciones de las propuestas teóricas y pedagógicas más en boga en los últimos años.

Cet article livre un aperçu des potentialités de recherche en linguistique que peut révéler un corpus de sms, en exploitant la voie de la néologie. Après avoir circonscrit et défini la notion d’écrit sms, les auteurs présentent les corpus francophones étudiés ainsi que la méthodologie d’extraction précise qui a mené à plus d’une centaine de candidats, propres au contexte de la communication médiée par ordinateur. Ces candidats sont ensuite détaillés et analysés selon leur provenance géographique, leur procédé de création et leur contexte d’apparition.

НЕОЛОГІЧНА ЛЕКСИКА ЯК СИСТЕМА У статті проаналізовано неологічну лексику як структурний складник лексико-се-мантичної системи мови. Схарактеризовано внутрішньослівні, парадигматичні, синтаг-матичні й асоціативно-дериваційні (епідигматичні) відношення між елементами неологіч-ної системи. На прикладі лексико-семантичного поля «Рослинний світ» простежено поділ неологізмів на лексико-семантичні-групи, які складаються з мінімальних семантичних об'єднань: синонімічних рядів, антонімічних пар, гіперо-гіпонімічних і меронімічних груп. The lexical-semantic system of Ukrainian language is the most complex and dynamic and is updated with new lexemes constantly , so the research of modern vocabulary as component of this system is actual. Lexical-semantic system of language is not just something that exists in the language, but also can be created in the future. The purpose of this article to analyze the modern vocabulary as a common system and characterize the inherent word, paradigmatic, syntagmatic and associative-derivational relations between new words. The lexical and semantic field of neologisms «The flora» consists of lexical and semantic groups such as «Names of trees», «Names of bushes», «Names of herbs», «Names of mushrooms», «Names of plant sets» etc. These groups are combined by common hyperseme 'plant'. The lexical and semantic groups consists of minimal semantic units that is synonymic rows, anto-nymic pairs, hyper and hyponymic groups. So modern vocabulary as a system reflects the peculiarities of national language and poetical worldview and constantly develops Ukrainian language in general and its lexical-semantic system in particular.

In his study THE ODYSSEY OF WORDS Nikos Mathioudakis presents the odyssey of words within a literary work, from inspiration and their writing by the author until they are read and understood by reader, focusing his research on Kazantzakis's ODYS[S]EY, which is thematically the continuation of Homer's Odyssey. The present study is the first linguistic treatise on the majestic epic poem of Nikos Kazantzakis, through which the style and language of the Cretan writer, but also the lexicographical richness that uses for the poetic composition of his ODYS[S]EY. ///


Στη μελέτη του Η ΟΔΥΣ[Σ]ΕΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΛΕΞΕΩΝ ο Νίκος Μαθιουδάκης παρουσιάζει την οδύσσεια των λέξεων μέσα σε ένα λογοτεχνικό δημιούργημα, από την έμπνευση και τη γραφή τους από τον συγγραφέα μέχρι την ανάγνωση και την κατανόησή τους από τον αναγνώστη, επικεντρώνοντας την έρευνά του στην ΟΔΥΣΕΙΑ του Καζαντζάκη, η οποία αποτελεί θεματικά τη συνέχεια της Οδύσσειας του Ομήρου. Η παρούσα μελέτη αποτελεί την πρώτη γλωσσολογική πραγματεία για το μεγαλειώδες αυτό έπος του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη, μέσα από την οποία αναδεικνύεται το ύφος και η γλώσσα του κρητικού λογοτέχνη, αλλά και ο λεξικογραφικός πλούτος που χρησιμοποιεί για την ποιητική σύνθεση της ΟΔΥΣΕΙΑΣ του. ///

Canlı bir varlık olan dilin söz varlığı sürekli gelişim halindedir. Bir dilde yeni üretilen bir kavrama yeni bir adın verilmesi dilbilim terminolojisinde neolojizm terimiyle karşılanır. Neolojizmler teknolojik, ekonomik, psikolojik veya kültürel sebeplerden ortaya çıkabilmektedir. Neolojizm (yeni öğe) kavramı birçok dil bilimci tarafından dil yozlaşmasının sebeplerinden sayılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada markaların hem üretici yoluyla hem de tüketici yoluyla nasıl hareket kavramı haline getirildiği, bu hareket kavramı haline getirmenin sebepleri neolojizm bağlamında üretici ve tüketici açısından ayrı ayrı değerlendirilecektir. Çalışma sonunda neolojizmlerin dilin biçim ve anlam yapısına uyduğunda o dilin söz varlığına katkıda bulunan sözlük birimler olduğu gösterilecektir.

En este artículo presentaremos el análisis de 79 neologismos atestiguados en México durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en el año de 2020. Este grupo de palabras se obtuvo a partir de la base de datos Morfolex, un corpus dedicado al estudio onomasiológico de la estructura morfológica del léxico neológico. Entre estas palabras se encuentran: anticoronavirus, infodemia, sanitizante, covidiota, zoomestre, covidiano, gatellada, cubreboqueado, pandemizar, prohibicionitis, pandemoniaco, plandemia. Detallaremos el análisis de los procesos de formación de palabras utilizados y los contextos de uso correspondientes.

AS A WORLD WONDER, the nominal attribute, “Grand Canyon”, has been copied and rephrased for hundreds of other locales the world over, and on other celestial bodies. In some fashion, formally, or far more often informally, these places are called “The Grand Canyon”, the “Grand Canyon of ” a certain place, and variously as “another” Grand Canyon of one sort or another. Occasionally there even are “grander” and “littler” Grand Canyons. A majority of the listings here are extracted from the ephemeral postings of internet websites; the remainder appear in conventional publications. These comprise a unique perspective of the extenuating powers of impression that the Grand Canyon has held ever since the first “other” Grand Canyon was named (the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, in 1870).

In the early 1800s, two figures foundational to modern intellectual life, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Friedrich Schleiermacher, engaged in what they called a "quiet war," stemming from Schelling's famous lectures on the method of academic study and Schleiermacher's reaction. This paper argues that their "quiet war" resulted in a powerful synthesis that transformed the German university model and German Protestant and Catholic university theology until the dawn of the twentieth century. Schleiermacher sharply criticized and then in essence adopted the program of Schelling's lectures. Their disagreements masked deeper commonalities, which together contributed to the historicization of theology in the nineteenth century.
