Tunisian Berber

Le tasfih (littéralement « fermage », « scellement ») est un rituel profane de protec-tion de la virginité féminine auquel se soumettent par deux fois certaines jeunes filles tunisiennes, obtenant ainsi le statut de msafha: avant leur entrée dans la puberté (séquencefermeture) ; et avant leur entrée dans la conjugalité (séquence ouverture). Pratiquées en mi-lieu urbain et rural, des variantes du rituel coexistent. C’est dans un contexte familial et féminin qu’une opératrice (mère, tante, grand-mère, matrone, voisine, etc.) effectue une légèreincision sur le genou, recueillant le sang avec sept fruits secs. À chaque ingestion, l’enfant doit alors prononcer une formule d’engagement impliquant l’impuissance sexuelle de tous lesprétendants avant son mariage : « je suis un mur, et le fils d’autrui un fil ». La veille des noces, la jeune femme offre sa virginité en inversant la formule.

Conclusions (in French):

Si l’on veut essayer de résumer de façon très synthétique les composantes dégagées, on relève :
– un fond zénète, à l’intérieur duquel on constate plusieurs traits communs avec le parler de Figuig ;
– une composante nefousi (plutôt le parler de Yefren que le parler de Fassato) ;
– une composante “ghadamsi” dont l’origine n’est pas facile à saisir, et dont il serait intéressant de connaître les vicissitudes ;
– quelques rares éléments “kabyles” de provenance probablement, kétamienne ;
– une innovation phonétique partagée seulement par le touareg, indice, peut-être, d’une ancienne composante hawwara.

Le récit d'une interaction majeure et d'un syncrétisme local intemporel Après 'Grecs et Libyques', ce second texte vient compléter les recherches entreprises pour tenter de remonter aux origines possibles de la symbolique décorative caractérisant l'orfèvrerie aurésienne, ou tout au moins ses aires d'influence. Cette étude étaye également une analyse précédente, consacrée au 'Signe de Tanit'. L'impact symbolique et culturel de Tanit, déesse punique de la Fécondité, est tel qu'il a semblé nécessaire de l'analyser indépendamment. Sur bien des points, la civilisation phénicienne a eu une forte influence sur celle des Grecs. La Phénicie demeure le lieu de la création du premier alphabet. Elle a également servi de tremplin aux civilisations antérieures : mésopotamiennes ou syriennes. On pourrait donc se poser la question de savoir pourquoi elle figure en deuxième volet dans cette quête de l'histoire amazighe. La réponse est tout simplement d'ordre géographique et historique. La première véritable « colonisation » durable fut celle des Grecs de Cyrénaïque, suivie ensuite par la fondation de Carthage. L'analyse montrera que les Puniques, et par voie de conséquence, les Numides, sont restés fortement influencés par la culture grecque. Il est d'ores et déjà intéressant de constater que ce triple amalgame aura des répercussions culturelles indélébiles jusqu'aux temps modernes ! Ce volet apparaît donc comme un maillon essentiel dans la recherche d'interprétation des figures géométriques de la parure féminine amazighe / berbère. Il est vraisemblable que l'apport symbolique de la décoration était déjà en place avant l'arrivée des Romains, qui n'ont fait que conserver ce qui existait déjà. « Carthago delenda est » ['Il faut détruire Carthage']: cette citation martelée par le sénateur romain Caton est devenue réalité quand Rome, victorieuse de la IIIe guerre punique, détruit sa rivale [en 146 av. J.-C.] pour s'y établir à son tour. On peut malgré tout se poser la question suivante: Carthage at -elle vraiment été anéantie en totalité ? Or, cette première interrogation en entraine une seconde : est-il possible d'oblitérer la mémoire d'une culture de manière irrémédiable ? On peut certes faire disparaître des murs, des monuments, voire des êtres vivants. Toutefois, il est vraisemblable qu'il en restera des traces archéologiques, et surtout des éléments culturels et linguistiques indélébiles. Or justement, les archéologues ont découvert récemment quelques éléments puniques. « La ville fut détruite […] mais elle ne fut pas rasée de fond en comble, comme le veut la légende ». À Byrsa, par exemple, « sont apparus des murs encore assez élevés (jusqu'à 3 m) 1 ». De surcroît, il semble improbable d'éradiquer un héritage qui s'est prolongé pendant sept cents ans. « Au Ve siècle, à l'époque de saint Augustin, le punique était encore parlé aux environs de Constantine, du moins dans la région d'Hippone (Bône-Annaba) et de Thagaste (Souk-Ahras), mais c'était un parler dont se servaient les paysans et que les savants dédaignaient 2 ». On a pu s'attaquer aux fondements de Carthage, sans toutefois nuire à l'existence d'un autre peuple, appelé les Numides. Ce terme est utilisé par convenance, plus que par réalité physique et historique, afin de l'opposer au terme libyque, utilisé par les Grecs. Car, ce sont bien les Numides qui porteront le flambeau punique après la destruction de Carthage, puisqu'ils en ont été les bénéficiaires directs. Par ironie du sort, au cours de la 1ère guerre punique, les Romains ont détruit Kerkouane', petite colonie punique du cap Bon. La ville a été alors délaissée et a été oubliée. Or ce site, dorénavant classé par l'Unesco 3 , a révélé aux archéologues, non seulement de précieuses données sur l'habitat punique mais aussi la confirmation d'une symbiose autochtone numide, souvent appelée libyco-punique. (English Abstract) This article presents three samples of written documents from Tunisia and Libya. Several ancient texts are already known with regard to the most western territories (especially southern Morocco), but the written literature of eastern countries is much less known.
The oldest text, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is the Kitāb al-Barbariyya, a Berber commentary on an Ibāḍite legal work, the Mudawwana of Abū Ghānim. Its author was an otherwise unknown Abū Zakarīyaʾ Yaḥyâ al-Yafranī. Its language is rather archaic and very different from that of Yefren (Libya), while several elements link it to the current Tunisian dialects: it seems probable, therefore, that the Nisba Yafranī refers to the tribe of Banu Yafran, who formerly occupied the region of Djérid and were Nukkarites as the author of this text (see Brugnatelli 2011, 2016).
The second text is a religious poem, Tmazixt, composed by a sheikh from Djerba (Tunisia), Šaʿbān b. Aḥmad al-Qannūšī, who lived between the end of the 18th and the early 19th century. It is recorded in several written versions, collected in the 20th century, as well as a recording by an elderly reciter who was one of the last custodians of this oral tradition (v. Brugnatelli 2005, 2008).
Lately, the paper presents the 35 or so texts in Berber of Cheninni (South Tunisian), collected by the French researcher Auguste Bossoutrot towards the end of the 19th century. He also transcribed these texts in Arabic characters, but he added a transcription in Latin characters and a translation in French (v. Brugnatelli 2018).

(Résumé Français) Cet article vise à présenter trois exemples de documents écrits provenant de l’est de la Berbérie, notamment la Tunisie et la Libye. Plusieurs textes anciens sont déjà connus en ce qui concerne les territorires les plus occidentaux (notamment le sud marocain), mais la littérature écrite des pays orientaux est beaucoup moins connue.
Le texte le plus ancien, qui remonte au moyen âge, est le Kitāb al-Barbariyya, commentaire berbère d’un ouvrage juridique ibāḍite, la Mudawwana d’Abū Ghānim. Son auteur était un nommé Abū Zakarīyaʾ Yaḥyâ al-Yafranī, par ailleurs inconnu. Sa langue est très différente du parler actuel de Yefren (Libye), tandis que plusieurs éléments la rattachent aux parlers tunisiens actuels : il semble probable, donc, que la nisba Yafranī renvoie plutôt à la tribu des Banu Yafran, qui jadis occupaient la région du Djérid et étaient nukkarites comme l’auteur de ce texte. La langue de ce texte est plutôt archaïsante (v. Brugnatelli 2011, 2016).
Le deuxième texte est un poème religieux, Tmazixt, composé par un cheikh de Djerba (Tunisie), Šaʿbān b. Aḥmad al-Qannūšī, ayant vécu entre la fin du 18ème siècle et le début du 19ème. On connaît plusieurs versions écrites, recueillies au 20ième siècle, ainsi que un enregistrement par un récitateur âgé qui est l’un des derniers dépositaires de cette tradition orale (v. Brugnatelli 2005, 2008).
Dernièrement, on va discuter les quelque 35 textes en parler de Cheninni (Sud Tunisien), recueillis par le chercheur français Auguste Bossoutrot vers la fin du 19ème siècle. Lui aussi, il a transcrit ces textes en caractères arabes, mais il a ajouté une transcription en caractères latins et une traduction en français (v. Brugnatelli 2018).

A short survey of linguistic contacts between Berber and Arabic in Jerba, taking into account field notes on the Berber language of Guellala and Behnstedt's articles on the Arabic spoken in Jerba. Interestingly, Arab borrowings in Berber belong to an ancient layer of Arabic dialects, showing pre-Hilalian features, while nowadays Arabic displays typical Hilalian features.

Within the framework of studies concerning the importance of European manuscript collections for Ibadi history, this article aims at retracing the history of an archive put together by the French scholar Auguste Bossoutrot (1856–1937). This archive gathered a quantity of materials on the Arabic and Berber languages collected during his life. In particular, some of the manuscripts contain parts of a long religious work in Berber (Kitāb al-Barbariyya), discovered in the island of Djerba (Tunisia) among the Ibadi community of the island towards the end of the nineteenth century. This text was firstly discovered and reported to the scientific community by another French scholar, A. De Calassanti-Motylinski (1854–1907), but his untimely death prevented him from publishing it and the whereabouts of the manuscripts that contained it remained unknown until the discovery of Bossoutrot’s papers, which contained the longest extant copy of the work (about 900 pages).

Presentation, in a colloquium held in 2004, of an Ibadite poem recently discovered in Djerba. Still preserved in memory and chanted by some elders of Guellala, the text is also recorded in some manuscripts.

This texts displays an interesting interplay between orality and literacy in the Ibadite communities during the last two centuries. In fact, it was composed at the beginning of the 19th century as a tool for religious teaching in a mostly illiterate environment. Nowadays, with the ongoing loss of the Berber language and of the ancestral traditions, the written texts are felt by the Ibadites themselves as the best means to preserve this cultural heritage.

Numidians,-both are historical names-it still refers to the same culture usually known as Berber, but that the word Amazigh (pl. Imazighen) tends to replace nowadays. The syncretism was so deeply rooted that it almost seems anachronistic to use the term Punic for Carthage and Numidian for the Imazighen: the appellation libyco-punic would certainly be more appropriate. Historians have written extensively on the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Phoenicians or the Punics, but very little is known on the Imazighen. Yet, as we slowly progress into this knowledge, we discover their importance in the Antiquity and what their real impact was on other cultures. On a more sociological consideration, it is fascinating to realize how smooth the process of mutual integration went on, and most importantly, the considerable benefit it generated, economically as well as culturally. This paper presents original data on the Berber language of Cheninni (Southern Tunisia), a variety that up until now has not yet been investigated by Berberologists. It focuses on a number of lexical items that clearly belonged to a jargon, possibly shared by other Berber languages. The existence, circustances and extent of use of this special code are also invesyigated.

This paper deals with some interesting cases of suppletion taking place in some Eastern Berber varieties (from Tunisia, Libya and Egypt), and focuses on the verb "say", which displays complex paradigms in these regions. Usually different roots are used in different tenses, but the change of root depends also on the presence/absence of affixes (Siwa, Egypt). The examination of these alternations leads to some inferences in the history of Berber languages.
