This volume was originally inspired by a 2017 conference to honour the scholar and linguist Cao Xuân Hạo, whose landmark work – in many diverse areas of language study – established a bridge between traditional Vietnamese scholarship and contemporary theories of grammatical organisation. The book offers the reader a closely edited collection of papers, representing a wide spectrum of frameworks, approaches and methods, from traditional fieldwork studies of non-standard dialects, to corpus-based discussions of language and gender, to formal syntactic and semantic analyses of key functional morphemes, to laboratory experiments, and work in first language acquisition. Many of the papers present detailed analyses of original data, as well as novel treatments of established facts; considered together – as well as in contrast to one another – they make a significant empirical contribution to our understanding of how Vietnamese is structured, acquired and put to use. The papers should be of value to anyone interested in contemporary approaches to Vietnamese linguistics, and Southeast Asian languages more generally.

In this paper, we scrutinise the interpretation and distribution of a number of morphemes that serve as means of expressing temporal/aspectual relations in Vietnamese, investigating whether they should treated as genuine tense and aspect markers. The main goals of the study are two-fold: (i) empirically, to offer a comprehensive description of Vietnamese tense and aspect, in both pre-verbal and post-verbal domains; (ii) theoretically, to offer new pieces of evidence supporting the claim that Tense and Aspect exist as independent functional categories in Vietnamese.

About 160,000 individuals with a Vietnamese backgrounds living in Germany with various reasons of migration, the Vietnamese group is considered a “visible minority” and socio-culturally “distant” from so-called native Germans. The two contrasting stereotypes of Vietnamese migrants prevailed in the German public imagination as the cigarette smuggler and the elite migration with over achievement in education are only two puzzle pieces of a whole puzzle. The Vietnamese people in this host country have to struggle with both stigmatization and compliment. The present paper aims to introduce the conducted research related to Vietnamese diaspora in Germany to give an overview about this group, and to provide more information for doing more research, and developing particular social, cultural and economic policies for this group.

This is a presentation given to Foreign Service Institute students of Vietnamese who had previous advanced knowledge of the Chinese language. The goal was to give them knowledge of the historical and linguistic connections between Vietnamese and Chinese in order to utilize their knowledge of Chinese to advance their Vietnamese vocabulary. It also identifies points of contrast between the languages.

With good communication skills in Vietnamese, foreign businesses can fully improve their ability to persuade and create a strong attraction for domestic and international business partners in the business environment. Vietnamese businesses, thereby bringing the best results to his career. Along with the increasing international integration of Vietnam, the role of Vietnamese language has gradually been affirmed. Therefore, foreign businesses need to be fluent in and promote the advantages of Vietnamese to seek business opportunities and dominate the market using this language.

Hiện nay, dạy tiếng Việt cho người nước ngoài đang là một lĩnh vực được nhiều người quan tâm. Nếu chữ viết được coi là phương tiện ưu thế nhất trong giao tiếp thì học vần có một vị trí quan trọng không thể thiếu đối với những học viên mới làm quen với tiếng Việt. Bản thân việc học vần sẽ giúp học viên nắm vững đồng thời cả hai kĩ năng viết và đọc, vận dụng tốt chữ viết với vai trò như một công cụ.
Qua thực tế giảng dạy, chúng tôi nhận thấy việc dạy học vần rất dễ rơi vào tình trạng máy móc và nhàm chán. Một giải pháp đảm bảo sự thành công trong học tập là tạo được sự hứng thú nhận thức cho người học. Đề tài "Thiết kế một số trò chơi dạy học vần, mở rộng vốn từ  tiếng Việt cho học viên nước ngoài" nhằm mục đích tạo hứng thú cho người học, giúp học viên nhớ nhanh và nhớ lâu bài học, gắn liền việc học vần với việc mở rộng vốn từ vựng.
Nội dung chính của đề tài là thiết kế một số trò chơi mang tính ứng dụng để nâng cao hiệu quả của việc dạy học vần tiếng Việt cho học viên nước  ngoài, như: tinh mắt tìm chữ, giải ô chữ, ghép chữ tạo từ, ghép hình, con trăn từ, xem tranh tìm vần.

In Vietnam, teaching is a respectable and honorable job. Being grateful to teachers is a traditional culture of Vietnamese people as it expresses the desire to gain knowledge of each person in particular, the entire ethnic community in general. Today, this tradition continues to be retained, promoted, and becomes a spiritual value-oriented for teachers in cultivating and practicing morality. Also, it is one of the fundamental problems, is of top concern to the whole society. In this article, the author initially explains important information and proposes some solutions to preserve the conscience of Vietnamese teachers in the current period.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the influence of the Czech language on Vietnamese learners’ pronunciation of English by comparing English pronunciation of Vietnamese students living in Vietnam and 2nd generation Vietnamese immigrants living in the Czech Republic. Data for this research were obtained from questionnaires, which were mailed to three Vietnamese English learners living in North Vietnam and to three Czech-Vietnamese learners living in the Czech Republic. The questionnaires investigated respondents’ view on how they were exposed to English, how much they used English in their daily lives. Furthermore the respondents were asked to send a recording of themselves reading a short text written in English.
This paper consists of two parts – a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, not only linguistic terms concerning the second language acquisition are clarified, but also related phenomena like bilingualism and multilingualism are explained. Also Vietnamese language is introduced, in particular the Vietnamese sound system and syllabic structure with the emphasis on final consonant clusters, and then final consonants of Czech language are briefly compared to English final consonants.
In the empirical part, results from the research are presented and analysed. The thesis hopes to offer a detailed description of the difference between Vietnamese English speakers living in Vietnam and those living in the Czech Republic.

As we write this abstract, it is 2020 and there are scholars in China hard at work seeking to demonstrate that the Zhuang ethnic group are descended from ancient people known as the "Luoyue." Not all that long ago, in the 1950s, certain Vietnamese scholars worked equally hard to demonstrate that the Vietnamese were descended from the very same "Luoyue" people, pronounced in Vietnamese as "Lạc Việt." In both cases, these claims to ancestry from the Lạc Việt/Luoyue were new. They were also both parts of efforts to construct an identity that could unify a group of people and provide them with a sense that their group possessed deep historical roots. This effort has succeeded in Vietnam. In the case of China, it is an effort that is still underway. In this paper, we examine these two "competing imagined ancestries" and ponder how these identity projects will impact the lives of people in both Vietnam and China in the years ahead.

Johann Gottfried von Herder, nhà thơ và nhà triết học người Đức có câu nói rất đáng suy ngẫm: “Một dân tộc còn có gì có thể quý giá hơn là ngôn ngữ mà ông cha để lại?”, không đặt nặng tính chính xác của câu nói nhưng nó cũng cho ta thấy ngôn ngữ là rất quan trọng. Cùng với giá trị, chuẩn mực, biểu tượng, ngôn ngữ là một trong bốn yếu tố cấu tạo nên văn hóa của một dân tộc. Ngôn ngữ của bất kì dân tộc, quốc gia nào cũng có những sự biến chuyển theo thời gian và có những lỗi trong cách sử dụng. Tại Việt Nam cũng vậy, hiện nay xuất hiện rất nhiều từ ngữ và kiểu nói mới, đồng thời lỗi chính tả, từ vựng và ngữ pháp cũng rất phổ biến trong trường học, trên các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng hay trong giao tiếp hằng ngày của người dân, đặc biệt ở các thành phố lớn (đa văn hóa, đa thành phần dân cư). Xem xét lại hiện trạng của tiếng Việt ngày nay với những thay đổi, tìm hiểu các lỗi trong sử dụng, ảnh hưởng xã hội của nó, nguyên nhân và gợi ra hướng cải thiện là mục tiêu của bài tiểu luận này.

Đây là một bài trình bày cho thấy bằng chứng về việc từ tiếng tiền Hán-Việt nên có thanh sắc và nặng (thanh khứ của tiếng Hán) có thanh ngang và huyền. Nó cũng cho thấy điều này có liên quan đến sự hình thành của thanh điệu trong cả tiếng Hán và tiếng Việt.

Abstract: This is a small-scale etymological study of 100 basic vocabulary items in Vietnamese using large databases and electronic searchable resources  including all of the major language families of East and Southeast Asia (Austroasiatic, Austronesian, Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai, and Sino-Tibetan). Nearly sixty percent of the basic lexical items studied in Vietnamese are Austroasiatic in origin, about one-third are Vietic or Vietnamese, and 10 percent are Sinitic (i.e. the Chinese branch of Sino-Tibetan) vocabulary. No other neighboring language groups can be shown to be direct sources of any of the words in the study, despite some phonologically similar forms.  The data sources and methods of assessment are described and implications of the data are discussed. The importance of the use of large databases is highlighted, and it is asserted that future use of such databases and innovations in queries and data processing techniques will substantially improve understanding of the language history of Vietnamese and of other languages in the region.

Tóm Tắt: Đây là một nghiên cứu từ nguyên quy mô nhỏ của 100 từ vựng Tiếng Việt cơ bản, sử dụng cơ sở dữ liệu lớn và các văn bản điện tử, bao gồm những gia đình ngôn ngữ ở Đông Á và Đông Nam Á (Nam Á, Nam Đảo, H'Mông-Miền, Tai-Kadai, và Hán-Tạng). Gần sáu mươi phần trăm các mục từ vựng được nghiên cứu là thuộc hệ ngôn ngữ Nam Á, khoảng một phân ba thuộc nhóm Vietic và Tiếng Việt, và mười phân trăm là từ vựng Sinitic (Nhóm Hán). Không có nhóm ngôn ngữ láng giềng khác có thể được chứng minh là nguồn trực tiếp của bất kỳ từ nào trong nghiên cứu này mặc dù có một số hình thức âm vị học tương tự như thế. Các nguồn dữ liệu và phương pháp đánh giá được mô tả và ý nghĩa của các dữ liệu được thảo luận. Tầm quan trọng của việc sử dụng cơ sở dữ liệu lớn được đánh dấu, và bài này nhấn mạnh rằng việc sử dụng của cơ sở dữ liệu trong tương lai và những đổi mới về nghiên cứu và các kỹ thuật xử lý dữ liệu như vậy sẽ rộng rãi cải thiện sự hiểu biết về lịch sử ngôn ngữ của Tiếng Việt và những ngôn ngữ trong khu vực xung quanh Việt Nam.

The aim of this thesis is two-fold: to develop an articulated Vietnamese clause structure in two syntactic domains: VP-external and VP-internal in the spirit of generative grammar, and to see how this functional architecture is supported empirically from the perspective of second language acquisition.
To address theoretical issues, on the one hand, it brings together interesting semantic and syntactic contrasts of aspectual morphemes in Vietnamese, i.e., the distributional and interpretative independence of Vietnamese tense and aspect as well as the way they interact with other syntactic phenomenon such as negation, quantification and definiteness. On the other hand, it reveals to what extent the mechanisms that Vietnamese recruits to encode aspect are different from those employed in Indo- European languages and other areally-related languages, especially including Chinese.
Based on a detailed semantic-syntactic investigation of Vietnamese aspect, the thesis sets out the properties that need to be acquired by Chinese learners. It distinguishes between those properties which are acquirable without difficulties and those that are ‘problematic’ in order to verify the proposed Vietnamese functional clause. It also sets out to validate some recent hypotheses in the realm of second language acquisition.   
The thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 1 systematically reviews a set of semantic and syntactic studies on aspect that are relevant to the discussion. Chapter 2 lays out previous research on Vietnamese tense and aspect as points of departure for my proposals. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to an analysis of how tense and aspect are realized in Vietnamese both pre- and post-verbally. Chapter 5 provides a brief comparison between Vietnamese and Chinese aspectual systems, focusing on the particular properties investigated in the following chapter. Chapter 6 presents a set of experiments examining Chinese learners’ acquisition of Vietnamese aspect-related constructions, these shed light on current generativist hypotheses about second language acquisition.

Một hệ quả của những phương châm hội thoại do Grice đưa ra là mệnh đề được phát ngôn là mệnh đề chứa nhiều thông tin nhất trong số những mệnh đề quan yếu mà người nói tin là đúng (Grice 1967). Hệ quả này mâu thuẫn với thực tế trong trong trường hợp tồn tại hai mệnh đề vừa quan yếu vừa nhiều thông tin hơn mệnh đề được phát ngôn nhưng lại phủ định lẫn nhau. Sự mâu thuẫn này có tên gọi chuyên môn là “vấn đề đối xứng”. Luận văn này giới thiệu vấn đề đối xứng và thảo luận hai cách giải quyết nó theo cách tiếp cận hình thức, trong đó cách thứ hai phát triển và bổ sung cách thứ nhất.

Both Vietnam and Taiwan were introduced to the Romanized writing systems in the 17th century by Western missionaries. In Vietnam, the Romanized chữ Quốc ngữ system eventually replaced the traditional chữ Nôm and Han characters and became the official national orthography in 1945. However, its counterpart in Taiwan, the Pe̍h-ōe-jī, (Romanized Taiwanese) still has not yet become widespread. Moreover, the later imported Han writing system is used much more widely and has obtained the dominant status in contemporary Taiwan's society. This paper examines the missionary scripts in Vietnam and Taiwan from the persepectives of linguistics and sociolinguistics. The authors finds that what have prevented the Han characters from being replaced by Romanization are socio-political factors, rather than linguistics factors.

I have so far identified several hundred native Vietnamese words that are Proto-Austroasiatic etyma or regional Austroasiatic words (over 200 words) or Proto-Vietic etyma (over 500 words). These words are carefully selected based on comparative data of proto-language reconstructions and recurring phonological patterns among two dozen Vietic lects. This is a considerable update to previous studies of native vocabulary of Vietnamese words. These significant numbers of native vocabulary require that we change the perceived role of Chinese loanwords in the Vietnamese vocabulary. Vietnamese is far from a relexified language, having a sizeable quantity of significant Austroasiatic and Vietic vocabulary. However, how best to characterize this situation requires more consideration. In this brief report, I (a) review the data sources and methods of analysis, (b) discuss the findings based on semantic domains, and (c) offer some thoughts on what the linguistic data suggests about the connection between Vietnamese and its linguistic predecessor. Năm 2015, Dòng Tên Việt Nam kỷ niệm 400 năm sự hiện diện của dòng trên đất Việt. Một trong những đóng góp của các thừa sai (nhà truyền giáo) dòng Tên ở Việt Nam là sáng tạo ra một hệ thống chữ viết dựa trên mẫu tự La tinh mà ngày nay ta gọi là chữ Quốc ngữ. Lối chữ viết này lúc đầu chỉ được dùng trong nội bộ cộng đồng Công giáo. Trước hết để các giáo sĩ ghi âm tiếng Việt theo con chữ La-tinh hầu giúp việc học ngôn ngữ của các thừa sai được thuận lợi hơn. Sau đó họ cũng phổ biến cách viết này cho các cộng sự viên người bản xứ. Sau đó lối viết này được dạy cho các thầy giảng và linh mục người Việt dưới thời Hội Thừa Sai Paris và trở thành một công cụ trao đổi thông tin giữa chức sắc Công giáo người Việt với các thừa sai người nước ngoài. Cuối cùng, người Việt cũng có thể qua mẫu tự La tinh mà tiếp cận với các ngôn ngữ Tây phương mau chóng hơn. Sau khi người Pháp chiếm Nam Kỳ làm thuộc địa, họ mau chóng nhận ra giá trị của loại chữ viết này và bắt đầu áp dụng nó trong giáo dục phổ thông và báo chí. Từ buổi đầu việc sử dụng chữ Quốc ngữ ở Nam Kỳ cho đến khi phong trào Duy Tân và Ðông Kinh Nghĩa Thục, lối viết tiếng Việt theo mẫu tự La tinh đã từ từ lột xác dưới mắt các sĩ phu Việt Nam. Cái thứ văn tự mà chỉ vài thập niên trước đó còn bị xem như một toan tính của chính quyền thuộc địa hòng Âu hóa nền quốc học Việt Nam, thì đến đầu thế kỷ 20 loại chữ viết này lại được giới sĩ phu yêu nước đón nhận như một công cụ chuyển tải hữu hiệu những tư tưởng yêu nước và khai sáng dân trí. Sang đến thập niên 1920, lối viết mới, bấy giờ được xem là "quốc ngữ", dần dà thay thế chữ Hán trong các văn bản hành chánh và báo chí. Nền giáo dục mới, tân học, dùng chữ Quốc ngữ dần thay thế nền giáo dục khoa cử, cựu học, đã tồn tại cả ngàn năm. Từ năm 1945 trở đi, chữ Quốc ngữ chiếm địa vị độc tôn, là văn tự chính thức của nước nhà độc lập.

In dieser Arbeit wird die Syntax zweier Satztypen des modernen Vietnamesischen untersucht: des Aussagesatzes und der Entscheidungsfrage. Erstens wird die Distribution temporaler und verbaler Elemente im Aussagesatz erklärt. Die Erklärung ist in Rahmen der minimalistischen Theorie formuliert und beinhaltet einige Annahmen über die Morphosyntax des Vietnamesischen. Von diesen Annahmen ausgehend wird dann eine Analyse für die Entscheidungsfrage gemacht, die ebenfalls mit Begriffen des Minimalismus formuliert wird. Es stellt sich aber heraus, dass diese Analyse in mancher Hinsicht inadäquat ist. Aus diesem Grund wird sie durch sprach- und konstruktionsspezifische Regeln ergänzt. Es wird angenommen, dass diese Regeln historisch entstanden sind und zur Peripherie gehören.

This presentation provides linguistic, archaeological (material culture, genetic, and dental/cranial), and ethnonym data to explore possible language scenarios of the Dong Son culture (600 BCE to 200 CE) in the Red River Delta. The most well-supported scenario is one in which Austroasiatic was present in the RRD from 4000 BP, and that by the Dong Son, Vietic was the dominant language group spoken there, but there is substantial evidence of a Tai presence and Tai-Vietic contact, though the details of such contact remains unclear.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las dificultades de los estudiantes vietnamitas en el uso del modo subjuntivo español, poniendo especial énfasis en las principales diferencias que existen entre la lengua, la cultura vietnamita y la española. Está especialmente dirigido a todos los estudiantes vietnamitas que estudian el español, ya que les permitirá entender mejor las razones por las que resulta difícil el aprendizaje de este modo gramatical y reflexionar sobre lo que es comunicar en otro idioma.

The purpose of this research is analyzing the difficulties of the Spanish subjunctive facing the Vietnamese students, emphasizing the main differences between language and culture in Vietnamese and Spanish. This study is specifically aimed at helping Vietnamese students who Study Spanish understand the difficulties they face in learning the Spanish subjunctive and reflect on the meaning of communication.

In East Asia, the relationship between script and language is determined to a great extent by the typological character of the languages involved. This is particularly so because sinographic writing generally relies on the syllable as the smallest unit of sound expressible. However, many languages that have adapted Sinitic writing throughout history display complex syllable structure not easily expressible by the monosyllabically inclined sinograph. Moreover, some languages have even displayed changing syllable structure throughout documented history. This article examines the so-called "monosyllabicization" of the Vietnamese language, and its impact on the history of the sinographic vernacular script known as Chữ Nôm. I argue that by the 17th century, the emergent monosyllabic character of Vietnamese was remarked upon by elites as a new justification for embracing vernacular writing, previously considered uncouth.

"The missionaries who adapted the Latin alphabet to Vietnamese were Portuguese, Italian and French. The resulting spelling inherited some peculiarities from the spelling systems of Romance languages.
Aspirated consonants H, PH, TH, KH [IPA: /h/, /pʰ/, /tʰ/, /kʰ/] are not found in Romance languages; however, in these languages, the combinations of letters PH, TH and KH are present in words of Greek origin, as equivalents for the Greek initials phi, theta, khi (φ, θ, χ), which were aspirated consonants in Greek; and thus these combinations were used to transcribe Vietnamese aspirated stop consonants.
Dorsal stops C, G are only used before the vowels /a/, /o/ and /u/. This is because, in Romance languages, it is the only position where these consonants preserved the obstruent pronunciation they had in Latin; GHE, GHI are used with the phonetic value they have in Italian; the combinations KE and KI resort to the letter K, used in Greek (kappa, κ) and in Germanic languages.
Labiovelar stops QU and GU are taken from Italian and Latin spellings.
Among prepalatals, the unvoiced stop CH is taken from the Portuguese and the Spanish, which themselves borrowed this notation from Old French, where it had been created to transcribe a new sound, not found in Latin.
The voiced stop D is used as an approximative notation for a sound not found in Europe, where D is the voiced counterpart of T. In Vietnam, a new letter, Đ, was coined [for a preglottalised alveolar stop: /ɗ/], its horizontal bar pointing to a similarity with the letter T.
The voiced spirant  was written as GI, as in Portuguese and French (at the time, J was not yet in use in Europe).
The unvoiced spirant X is borrowed from Portuguese and the Northern dialects of Spanish: in these languages, the S is pronounced at the back of the mouth [IPA: retroflex /ʂ/], as in Vietnamese, whereas elsewhere in Europe S is an anterior sibilant as in French [IPA: alveolar /s/].
NH [for the palatal nasal /ɲ/] is borrowed from the Portuguese; TR is an approximative notation for a sound which is not found in European languages [IPA: /ʈ/].
Ô, Ê are taken from the Portuguese, which is why the pair Ê, E does not have the same phonetic value as in French. [In French, Ê stands for /ɛ/, E stands for /e/, whereas the opposite is found in Vietnamese quốc ngữ, namely Ê for /e/, E for /ɛ/.]
Y is used in Vietnamese quốc ngữ in a way similar to what is found in Spanish, where it replaces I in-between vowels or at the end of words. The letter Y comes from the Greek alphabet (upsilon, υ).
Ơ and Ư were created to represent Vietnamese vowels that do not have equivalents in Western Europe [IPA /ɤ/, /ɯ/]."

This workbook was created with passion by Annie and Simon as a part of their Master's degree at The University of Sydney with a goal of creating resources to help the learning of Vietnamese.

A number of different languages in outside of the Indo-European family were analyzed based on how difficult it would be for a native English speaker to learn them. They were then rated on a purely impressionistic 1-6 scale of easiest to most difficult. Extensive phonological, morphological, syntactic and even semantic analysis was done for many of these tongues to highlight areas of difficulty for English learners. Very long: 101 pages.

Among Vietnamese dialects, Quảng Nam as a southern dialect, stands out for its rimal peculiarities. Many of these peculiarities are not reported in any Vietnamese dialects. However, some are recently found in small dialects of Hà Tĩnh of the north-central region, in particular the vowel [ɑ] and correspondence between [aw] and [o]. Thanh Hoá dialect, spoken in a province that lies between the northern and north-central regions of Vietnam, is very similar to Quảng Nam dialect, yet does not share the Quảng Nam features the way Hà Tĩnh subdialects do. The paper argues for the link between three non-standard varieties, Quảng Nam, Hà Tĩnh and Thanh Hoá dialects, each belonging to a different major dialectal group, and each geographically separated from one another. The paper examines the similarities and differences between these dialects, focusing on the Hà Tĩnh subdialect, and argues that historical migration is the cause of sound change in the Quảng Nam dialect. The paper claims that Quảng Nam dialect was established based on the speech of migrants from Thanh Hoá province and integrated some features from the speech of Hà Tĩnh migrants.

While consonant clusters, taken broadly to include presyllables, are commonly hypothesized for Old Chinese, little direct evidence is available for establishing the early forms of specific words.

A number of Vietnamese words borrowed from Chinese have initial consonant lenition in Vietnamese, which corresponds to presyllables in conservative Vietic languages, e.g.: Chinese 劍 kiæmH “sword” is borrowed as Vietnamese 劍 gươm [ɣ-] and Rục təkɨəm. Baxter and Sagart (2014) understand such words as reflecting Old Chinese preinitials, relying on conservative Vietic languages for the identity of the preinitial.

This essay examines a hitherto overlooked source: Old Vietnamese, a language attested in the single document 佛說大報父母恩重經 Phật thuyết Đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (Nguyễn Ngọc San 1982, Shimizu 1996, Hoàng Thị Ngọ 1999), which writes certain words, monosyllabic in modern Vietnamese, in an orthography suggesting sesquisyllabic phonology, e.g. rắn ‘snake’ is written 破散 (phá tản < phaH sanX), cf. Rục pəsiɲ³. For a number of words, Old Vietnamese provides the only testimony of the form of the Vietic borrowing.

The small list of currently known sesquisyllabic words of Chinese origin attested in this document includes examples of both words with a secure initial Chinese cluster and words with plausible Vietic prefixation. On the one hand, we find the word *s–kương ‘mirror’ borrowed from Chinese 鏡 kiæŋH. Here, the Vietnamese *s- is corroborated by its morphological derivation, which is an instance of the Sino-Tibetan instrumental deverbal
*sV-. On the other hand, for the word 阿唱 *ʔ–ɕướng ‘to chant’, likely borrowed from Middle Chinese 唱 tɕhaŋH, the Old Vietnamese form could reflect a dummy prefix *ʔ- (Section 4) that exists in other Vietic languages.

The early modern Sino-Vietnamese dictionary known as the Chỉ Nam Ngọc Âm Giải Nghĩa contains two prefaces: one written in Literary Sinitic, using Sinitic characters, and one written in Vietnamese, using the “vernacular” script called Chữ Nôm. If read separately, each preface makes independent arguments in favor of “semantosyllabic” graphemes (characters that encode information for both meaning and pronunciation). However, when read as a single, continuous text, the prefaces combine to present a defense of Chữ Nôm—not as a vernacular alternative to Sinitic characters—but as a legitimate augmentation of the intellectual technology they represent, and thus capable of “taming” southern culture and intellectuality into literate civilization
