Named entity recognition (NER) is one of the fundamental tasks in natural-language processing (NLP). Though the combination of different classifiers has been widely applied in several well-studied languages, this is the first time this method has been applied to Vietnamese. In this article, we describe how voting techniques can improve the performance of Vietnamese NER. By combining several state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms using voting strategies, our final result outperforms individual algorithms and gained an F-measure of 89.12. A detailed discussion about the challenges of NER in Vietnamese is also presented.

Agarwood, one of the valuable non-timber products in tropical forest, is a fragrant wood, whose ethereal fragrance has been prized in Asia for incense in ceremony, as well as sedatives in traditional medicine. We separated the 70% EtOH extract of Vietnamese agarwood, which showed significant induction effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA expression in rat cultured neuronal cells, to isolate a new compound and a 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone derivative. The new compound was determined to be a spirovetivane-type sesquiterpene, (4R,5R,7R)-1(10)-spirovetiven-11-ol-2-one, by spectroscopic data and showed induction effect of BDNF mRNA.The new sesquiterpenoid, (4R,5R,7R)-1(10)-spirovetiven-11-ol-2-one, isolated from agarwood significantly induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) exon III–V mRNA expression.

Recently, with the development and deployment of voicebots which help to minimize personnels at call centers, text-to-speech (TTS) systems supporting English and Chinese have attracted attentions of researchers and corporates worldwide. However, there is very limited published works in TTS developed for Vietnamese. Thus, this paper presents in detail the first Tacotron-2-based TTS application development for Vietnamese that utilizes the publicly available FPT open speech dataset (FOSD) containing approximately 30 hours of labeled audio files together with their transcripts. The dataset was made available by FPT Corporation with an open access license. A new cleaner was developed for supporting Vietnamese language rather than English which was provided by default in Mozilla TTS source code. After 225,000 training steps, the generated speeches have mean opinion score (MOS) well above the average value of 2.50 and center around 3.00 for both clearness and naturalness in a crowd-source survey.

This paper documents the experiences of Vietnamese migrant workers who migrated to Japan as industrial "trainees" during early and mid-2000, some of whom became unauthorized workers. Based on in-depth interviews and survey data collected in Vietnam in 2008 and 2009 from migrants who had returned from Japan, this paper explores the factors that led some workers to slip from legal to irregular work. Our analysis shows how the recruitment process in Vietnam, the implementation of the trainee/intern program in Japan, and migrant networks together create the conditions that encourage or discourage some workers from working in the irregular job sector and overstaying their visas. We situate this argument within the conceptualization of unauthorized labor migration as a structurally embedded phenomenon.

Animals have been human’s companions from ancient times until now. Humans have observed them, understood their characteristics and even domesticated some species to serve them. People have considered animals as friend, servant or as a source of comfort and encouragement. This doctoral thesis explores Vietnamese audience reception of soft masculinities, defined by the aestheticisation and romantic idealisation of male characters, in South Korean television dramas (K-dramas). Based on interview data collected in 2019, the thesis focuses on patterns of gendered desire, identification, and negotiation in viewers in their 20s and 30s. It highlights the popularity of K-dramas in Vietnam, which have established an enduring presence there since the late 1990s, overlapping with ongoing changes in gender relations following the introduction of the 1986 Đổi Mới (reform) policy, marked by Vietnam’s transition to a market economy and gradual integration into global trade. Corpus-based research has formed the backbone of linguistic research in recent decades. Large text corpora are used for solving various kinds of linguistic problems, including those of quantitative linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and psycholinguistics. This paper reports the creation of two corpora of contemporary Vietnamese. It also describes the construction of these two equally sized Vietnamese corpora (a corpus from Vietnamese film subtitles, subtlex-viet, and a general corpus of varieties of online newspapers and stories, genlex-viet). We document the general steps of the construction and extraction of linguistic information from the language corpora and provide a road map for others who would like to create similar corpora. The resultant corpora are available in three versions: plain text, tokenized, and POS tagged. In the second half of the paper, the construction of a lexical database derived from the corpora is described. The database includes measures such as frequency of occurrence, dispersion, Mutual Information, Inverse Document Frequency, as well as vector space measures based on Latent Semantic Analysis and Hyperspace Analogue to Language. We conclude by reporting a comparison of the lexical predictors and a validation using psycholinguistic data from visual lexical decision experiments.
